5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2000-01-30

Being a long time fan of Sean Connery I bought the book "The Films of Sean Connery" and I was not disappointed. The book covers his movie career with his first film appearance in "No Road Back" back in 1957 through to "The Rock" made in 1996. It was very interesting reading, each movie section includes the cast, credits, story line, great behind the scenes information plus lots of photographs. The book consists of a lot of interesting reading about Mr. Connery as an actor. How he felt about playing super spy 007, why he chose the films he made, and many interesting facts about performing dangerous stunt work himself! This book is great reading and you can either read through it as a biography of his movie career or skip around. I would recomend this book highly.

5 out of 5 stars Unveiling a Very Private Man!.......2006-11-24

The life of Sean Connery, arguably the most popular movie star of the past 40 years and everyone's favorite James Bond, is examined in this updated edition of a book first published in 1983. It is the best biography of Connery this reviewer has come across.

Callan does a marvelous job of revealing this gifted actor and most private of men. Talking with many of Connery's friends and movie business associates along with quotes from Connery himself, he has fashioned a comprehensive account of the born-into-poverty Thomas Connery who became a screen legend as James Bond.

Tiring of the 007 hype and worried of being typecast, Connery broke away to chart his own, iconoclastic career in movies. His subsequent track record was mixed: Marnie, The Hill, Zardoz, Time Bandits, The Man Who Would be King, The Wind and The Lion, Medicine Man, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Hunt for Red October, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, etc. but whatever the movie, Connery was always eminently watchable.

Connery marched to the sound of his own drummer and, as revealed in this book, was always quite ready to speak his mind or take legal action. In most ways, he was as fascinating a person off the screen as he was on.

Sean Connery fans will want this book. In 286 fast-paced pages, Michael Callan gives us a multi-dimensional portrait of one fascinating human being.

Book Description

Sean Connery is one of the world’s true superstars, applauded by critics and filmgoers alike. Now, John Parker traces the rise to stardom of the tough Edinburgh street kid, who left school at the age of thirteen. Arriving in London with gold teeth and tattoos to seek his fortune in the meat market of bodybuilding, Connery fought against snobbery to become a self-taught Shakespearean actor. Then came the big break. Auditioning for the part of James Bond, he told producers with typical bluntness how Bond should be played, and it landed him the job—and overnight stardom. Connery went on to become one of the world’s most versatile, highly paid actors, winning an Oscar for his role in The Untouchables. Here, John Parker offers an engaging portrait of one of the most glamorous, talented, and complex actors in movie history.

This is one of the many books that sterotype him in the James Bond role.

Just once we would love a book that gives us a sample of his heritage and his character as a fine gentleman. Not just James Bond 007 role.

This is not to say this is not entertaining but this is to our rating #3

              Book Description

Dazzling and original, Sonata for Jukebox is a brilliant foray into how pop music has woven itself into our lives since the dawn of the recording age. Geoffrey O'Brien delves into twentieth-century pop music as we experience it: a phenomenon that is at once public and private, personal yet popular. O'Brien's book is more than a history of pop music, although fragments of that history find their way into its pages. And it reaches far beyond a memoir, although it is an entertaining biography of the author's ears and his family's exceptional affinity with pop music-his father was a leading New York DJ and his grandfather led a dance band in Philadelphia. Ultimately, it is an exploration of what we as listeners hear, what we think we hear, and how we connect that experience with the rest of our lives. The dizzying array of musical references plays like a soundtrack as O'Brien explores how our lives are lived in the presence-and in the memory of the presence -of music. "Sonata for Jukebox attempts the impossible: to give a sense, however imperfect, partial, blurred, biased, of that amplitude of music. It is recklessly inclusive, supererogatively profuse in its desire to account for at least the possibility of everything now extant and someday to be. From the initial footsteps of biography and autobiography it charts a course farther and farther out until it parts the curtains onto a vision of the infinite. The rush of references and inventions is dizzying, headlong." - New York Review of Books

5 out of 5 stars An utterly original thinker.......2006-04-12

This book is pretty much impossible to describe well and truly, but anyone who truly loves music and has found themselves, through the course of life, frequently lost in the act of listening, or reminscing about the experience of hearing particular music, is urged to read this brilliant, imaginative, beautiful and moving work.

O'Brien's book about the experience of movie-going, "The Phantom Empire," estabished him as one of the great, unique movie viewers, and this one does the same for his listening. And that is what this book is about, listening. This is not about music, and that is an important distinction! It's about the experience of listening, and how what we listen to is incorporated into our personal history. But it's also about much more than that: his chapter on American Folk Music is one of the most astonishingly brilliant pieces of critical thinking about music I have ever read, his section on ambient music is subtle, mysterious and extraordinary.

Most of his listening, at least in this book, is of pop music, jazz, rock and other popular forms. But regardless of your listening habits, this book will be a pleasure and a beautiful companion to your own love of music.

5 out of 5 stars O'Brien Pens Another Flawless Volume of Really Cool Stuff.......2004-07-13

Sonata for Jukebox: Pop Music, Memory, and the Imagined Life is yet another stunning collection of cultural observations from poet/writer/critic/editor Geoffrey OÕBrien, "the thinking manÕs thinking man."

While framed as a series of essays on the history of American pop music, Jukebox is to the average collection of non-fiction pieces as JoyceÕs Dubliners is to a run-of-the-mill short story grouping. OÕBrien is just firing on so many cylinders, operating on so many levels, that the book pretty much transcends classification: one is tempted to appropriate musical terms of art in order to do the thing justice.

These essays use 20th Century pop tunes as touchstones for exquisite, haunting riffs on family, radio, loneliness, love, commercialism, companionship, loss, youth, ageÉ they give voice to ideas that loop and rise and fade, only to crackle forth again when we least expect them--like a snippet of BBC commentary on a shortwave, or some phrase of oboe melody in a Mozart piece--before evanescing once more.

What I found most enjoyable about this collection, however, was the accessibility of OÕBrienÕs references. His commentary is profound and original, but this isnÕt the sort of grandstanding "insider" claptrap that so often typifies music writing. ThereÕs no wink-wink nudge-nudge stuff about how it was really the bass playerÕs second cousin filling in on the B-side during that infamous Hamburg session, because (as "we" all know) PumpkinheadÕs ex-girlfriend had bronchitis that week. The author instead accords highly appropriate gravitas to songs we actually know, e.g. "Surfer Girl" and "Walk on By."

ThereÕs just something so pleasurable about reading the work of a guy who totally GETS the music weÕve been inundated with through the years. OÕBrien summarizes "IÕd Like to Teach the World to Sing" as "a Coca-Cola jingle transformed into the kind of song that a chorus of Chinese orphans might have sung in a late Ô50s movie about missionaries martyred by Communists." He articulates that the trouble with "Tie a Yellow Ribbon ÔRound the Old Oak Tree" is its "ineluctable stridency."

Jukebox doesnÕt bypass the contributions of Alan Lomax or Tin Pan Alley or Jimmie Rodgers or Paul Robeson to musical history, itÕs just that OÕBrien doesnÕt have to beat the underbrush for nuggets of footnotable obscurity in order to be taken seriously. He finds meaning in the ubiquitous, and shares this wisdom with an open handÑaccomplishments which are entirely too rare.

Perhaps the best way to summarize this book is with a description from within it:

"He will walk you through the history of music as though it were the history of the world, and as if both were nothing more than the history of this particular evening, the story of how you will somehow reach dawn."

A writer who can achieve that sonority and then observe, "I will know that old age has arrived when even the oldies are unfamiliar songs of younger generations," is a guy deserving both our respect and applause.

This is financial step one:Start the journey.I have also been listening to Dave Ramsey on the radio since he started in Nashville in 1993. His common sense information is why I have a 6 figure 401K, and have had financial peace over the past 13 years. He taught me what my parents should have about personal finance. This is a great beginners book in personal finance,it can show you the way out of debt and into prosperity. Here are some of the rules:
1). Never have a car payment
2). Do not use credit cards
3). Get a mortgage of less than 25% of your monthly net income.
4). Have 3 months of expenses saved
5). Get a career you love not a job
6). Tell yourself and yout family NO to things you can not afford
                7). Contribute 15% to your 401K
                8). Live on a budget
9). Live on less than you make!
10). Work two jobs until you are out of debt.

It is worth the price you pay short term for the long term peace.

5 out of 5 stars Financial Peace - A Plan that Truly WORKS!.......2006-05-05

This book has literally changed our lives. I give this as a wedding gift (w/some cash) for many young couples. But, young or old, the practical steps given in this book can change your life!

Ramsey is blunt, but caring. He provides hope when things look the worst. He's lived through bankruptcy and loss of everything, and he shares his story to show how changes in money management can impact you. Written in easy to understand language and terms. Should be required reading for all high school students! (but, it's not too late for the Baby-boomers.) Ramsey is a true teacher.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Doable.......2005-07-06

Dave Ramsey makes it easy to apply the principles he outlines in this book. In the conclusion he evens admits he hasn't totally implemented all he writes about in his own life. He explains that if a reader can accomplish 25% of what he describes, significant financial progress will result. There is not any major revelations in this book. He reminds you of the basics.

He puts finances into context, emphasizing from the outset that other aspects of life have to be taken into consideration. One of the recurring themes is to give to worthy causes. He also talks about tithing. His discussion on money always being in circulation is worthwhile.

The reflective nature of this book takes the subject matter way beyond greed. Stewardship, not accumulation is the framework. These principles are worthy goals which should be achieved by anyone interested in being a responsible adult.

3 out of 5 stars SIMPLE BUT POWERFUL.......2004-06-03

This is a very simple and easy to read book about getting out of debt and becoming financially free. The steps are clear-cut and presice and I plan on using the techniques to become free of debt. But to me the most powerful thing about the book is how it changes your way of thinking about debt. I like everyone hates being in debt but for some reason we've come to think that it's neccesary. The whole nation is in debt and it's only getting worse. This book opens your eyes to the fact that debt destroys lives and causes a never ending cloud of depression over you.
I really don't think people realize this in their everyday lives. They buy and buy what they can't afford and wonder why they're not happy with their spouses, jobs, careers, lives. Bottom line ,,, Debt equals NO PEACE and this book proves it.

The only negative about this older version of the book is that it doesn't suggest what a person should do if they don't have the money to take the steps. The book is so powerful in influencing your mindset it seems strange that it leaves out the important fact that a person may have to get a part-time job or they may have to cut out a lot of luxuries in order to get debt free. This version also doesn't suggest how a couple should work out differences of opinions when it comes to credit.

Other than those two things this is a great read for everyone and a book I feel every freshman in college should get for free before they start receiving all of those pre-approved credit card statements..

4 out of 5 stars Knowledge without Action is Powerless!.......2003-05-03

Dave Ramsey presents some very good information and IF most people appled it they could indeed create Financial Peace. The truth is as Dave says on page 271, "..Reading this book and obtaining knowledge is good, BUT IT IS NOT ENOUGH." Over 7 trillion dollars in consumer debt has families struggling with not only money but with time. They need a system that takes less than an hour a month, which is about all of the time and energy they have to break free. Dave certainly has the heart of his reader in mind when he wrote the book.
