Slightly outdated but still excellent review of Lollobrigida's career.......2005-11-14

This book was published in 1982, so does not cover Gina's 1980's TV work ("Deceptions" and "Falcon Crest") or the several other movies she made in the 1980's and 1990's. However, with that caveat in mind, it's a fine overview - actually, the only really detailed English-language overview - of La Lollo's films, with hundreds of B&W photos, synopses, and excerpts from reviews. This is one of the essential resources for any serious Lollobrigida fan.

Excellent Gina bio, but doesn't cover her life in the 1990's.......2005-11-14

I read this book several years ago via interlibrary loan, and it's quite good as a biography of Lollobrigida, although unofficial/unauthorized; however, it's somewhat out of date now, having been published in 1990, so it doesn't cover her most recent movie work nor her latest artistic efforts or forays into political and social activism. Also, the author is a non-native English speaker (Brazilian native living in Tokyo, I believe); I think the book was in fact translated into English from Portuguese, so the turn of phrasing is occasionally odd to the American eye. All the same, there is very little in full-length book form on Gina available to U.S. readers, so if you're a fan and you get a chance to get ahold of this book, absolutely do get it.

I really liked this book. Ita has lots of cool trick and hacks that I hadn't really heard of. Writing was good, but the best part was learning some cool new ways to use my favorite toy. If you want to get them most out of your ipod this is the best book out there.

Although this book was written in 2003 and is more targeted to the beginner, it does offer some things of value:

- a review of third-party products available
- tips on ensuring good music quality
- other tips and tricks you're unlikely to find in Apple's documentation

After spending several hundred dollars on your iPod, I think it's reasonable to spend 3% or 4% of the purchase price to ensure that you're using it optimally.

I don't regret buying this book.

Another editorial decision to make a book longer than the subject needs so the book can cost more. Extra 160 pages is uninformed and unqualified speculation about telecommunications and copyright laws, and feeble attempts at humor. Why do people who aren't funny in real life think they are funny in print?

Every second or third sentence refers to "your ipod", as in "your ipod" this, and "your ipod" that, and "your ipod" the other thing. Annoying and weird. Could of used some editing and recasting of sentences.

40 GB/Windows Users Don't Waste Your Money.......2004-01-03

I'm sure the book was very useful when it was current (May 2003) but it is really out of date for things released after that date. The iPod User's Guide that comes with the unit gave me all the information I needed. This book gave me a headache.

Clear writng, comprehensive, what more can you want?.......2003-07-28

I am using my ipod (15gb) with MusicMatch (PC) and I could't be happier with this book. Notwithstanding the previous reviewer's comments, this book made me a speed user in one reading. MusicMatch is the software provided by Apple for using an ipod with a PC. The software is not intuitive and before reading this book, this book, I was ready to take my ipod back to Apple. Happily, that wasn't necessary. Once you break the code, MusicMatch is easy to use and reliable. While this book was written for an earlier version of ipod, the chapters on MusicMatch are up to date with the latest version of the software as far as I can tell. Even the chapters that pertain to the ipod hardware are reasonably applicable to the new hardware. Go ahead and buy this book, you'll love it. BTW, I am not in anyway connected with this book or its authors, publsihers, etc. I am just a very satisfied user.

This is a nice book of jigsaw puzzles. There are 20 puzzles, and there are two pages for each puzzle. The first page has the colorful puzzle pieces that the child cuts apart. The second page is a guide that the child uses to assemble and paste the jigsaw pieces. The puzzles range from 4 to 12 pieces.

I got this last Christmas for my 4 year old son, and it was a bit beyond him. Recently he has become completely adoring of this book, and looks for opportunities to work the puzzles. I wish the publisher had more out! These are great.

We purchased this for our 4.5 year old in Dec 2004. 48 pieces were a bit beyound him then, but he mastered all the puzzles within 12 weeks. He is still doing them a year later. The publisher shoul consider bringing out other high quality and higher piece count puzzles.

my son has entered the puzzle-junky phase and received a jigsaw puzzle book as a gift. he loved it so much that I ordered a few more from Amazon. This one from Usborne has beautiful images, and the puzzles are just the right challenge for him (48 pieces too hard, 12 pieces too easy), and each puzzle contains a "secret" puzzle piece shaped like the topic of that particular page. A plus was that the content in the book was educational as well, so it was fun to read and learn too.

This book has nice, thick puzzle pieces. Many other puzzle books are flimsy and fall out of the book to be lost forever. We take this one to restaurants as a distraction while we wait and my 3-year-old son loves it. It is well made and colorful. I would recommend this book.

A wonderful quiet activity.......2006-01-03

My 4 year old son recieved this as a Christmas gift and he loves it. The puzzles are not too simple, but there is a matching picture on the book under the puzzle, so he can do it without any help. It has kept him occupied for up to 30 minutes at church,the doctor's office, and at home. That's saying a lot for my VERY busy child. I would recomend this book to anyone who is looking for a good quiet activity for their preschooler (and who isn't?).

Decent puzzle book.......2007-08-11

I bought this puzzle book for my 2 year old son. Some of the puzzles are a bit challenging because they don't have a lot of picture and color, but he can usually do them with a little help. Now that he has done some of them a few times, he can do those on his own. The pieces are a little thinner than I would like. We keep the plastic sleeves on to make sure the pieces don't fall out. They do seem to be in there pretty tight though. I'm on the fence about a repeat purchase.

What a great heavy keepsake book/toy! You will not be dissappointed by this jigsaw book. Each page has its own clear plastic sleeve, to keep the pieces securely in. Every page is hard back. The text and pictures that correspond with each puzzle page is fabulous. My daughter is 4 and we do this together, as it is to advanced for her to do it independently. Also, each piece is color coded in case of a mix up. Great deal!

This puzzle book should be on every child's bookshelf. The chosen pictures are a great selection of Escher's work. Of all the terrorist movements since World War II that had any realistic potential to form a national government, only one was decisively defeated on the battleground of ideas. Sendero Luminoso, the Shining Path, arose in Peru in 1980. It was distinguished by both the radicalism of its Maoist ideology and the viciousness of its tactics. An American diplomat, Bernard Aronson, called the Shining Path the most murderous guerilla group ever to operate in the Western Hemisphere and compared them to the Khmer Rouge. At one point this group commanded eighty thousand followers--two-thirds the size of Great Britain's standing army--and was the single largest political organization in the country.

The task of making the Shining Path politically irrelevant was accomplished primarily by ideological means. Hernando de Soto offered an alternative vision of Peru's poor. Rather than see them as the proletariat, he showed that they were in fact budding entrepreneurs whose greatest desire was not to bring down the market economy but to join it.

Hernando De Soto's "The Other Path" is a much drier read than its follow up "The Mystery of Capital." I'm glad I read TMC first - it gave a global economic perspective that I could relate to and which interested me in reading more of the author's work. The Other Path is very detailed in its portrayal of Peruvian politics, the intricacies of laws governing property rights and transactions, and the evolution of businesses from extralegal to legal operations. While this very book was the tool used by the Peruvian government to successfully solve its terrorism problem in the 1980s, by legalizing the economic operations of the majority of its marginalized citizens, and while its message and methods are even more relevant in the current climate of global terrorism, the step-by-step detail makes it a tedious read and I couldn't get all the way through. I will, at some point, try again, but I'm glad I read The Mystery of Capital first.

Where de Soto started - a brave statement.......2004-08-21

I love the little jibe provided within the title of Hernando de Soto's "The Other Path." It's a poke at "The Shining Path" (Sendero Luminoso), the Maoist Peruvian terrorist organization that wreaked havoc on de Soto's homeland beginning in 1980. de Soto's attempt in this book is to show that the more effective struggle is to make capitalism more efficient. To those who know de Soto's work, the solutions are well known: build a system of laws that allow one's residents to buy, sell and value property rights; and reduce the complexities and banalities of starting a business.

If you've read de Soto's master work "The Mystery of Capitalism," then there is no new news here. In fact, "The Other Path" will look out-of-date with its yellowing statistics. So why the five stars? As a testament to de Soto's bravery. Think about the guts it took for him to research and publish this book in Peru during the tumultuous and frightening period there. What a statement.

A Devastating Critique of Centrally Planned Economies.......2003-10-01

The original version of this book was written in the mid-80's to offer the people and government of Peru specific suggestions to combat Sendero Luminoso by making it possible for ordinary people to have a productive and meaningful participation in the nation's economy. This new printing includes a preface written in 2002 that provides the context and history for non-Peruvian readers and gives some analysis of the successes of the suggested reforms under the Fujimori government.

The first part of the book is a detailed analysis of three sectors of the Peruvian economy: housing, transport, and trade (small manufacturing and retail primarily). In each of these, De Soto demonstrates how the barriers raised by regulation and legal process from both right and left wing governments in Peru have forced the majority of persons participating to do so in informal/illegal ways. The result is that formal activity bears the brunt of taxation and informals have little protection in terms of property rights, contractual instruments, and so on. The net result is that everyone is impoverished. This section of the book can be tough reading because of the amount of detail, but its necessary in order to understand the importance of the second half.

The second half suggests that the Peruvian situation is really the reemergence of mercantilism, not a market economy. De Soto then provides some suggestions to peacefully transitiont to a market economy, and convincing warnings that failure to do so will almost certainly result in a violent transition.

The points that De Soto makes are increasingly significant to non-Peruvians as societies like America have increasingly centralised economies. Ironically, the cover includes blurbs from both Presidents Bush and Clinton. One suspects that netiher of them actually read the book.

I agree that this book would have been more interesting if read before Mystery, but now the mystery is gone.

This is good stuff just the same.

De Soto as a modern day Adam Smith?.......2003-06-07

In many ways, I am disappointed that I read this book after reading de Soto's other book, "The Mystery Of Capital". Both this and his other book largely contain the same ideas, but "The Other Path" focuses more intently on de Soto's experiences in Peru rather attempting to answer a very broad question. Because "The Other Path" focuses on squarely on Peru, it can more completely chronicle how his ideas have been used to better the lot of poor Peruvians, and have contributed to the defeat of Sendero Luminoso.

I would have preferred it if the book did not purport to be a general answer to terrorism. While his ideas are very applicable with respect to Maoist revolutionaries attempting to (in theory) uplift the poor, they seem less relevant to "non-economic" terrorists, such as certain rich scions of Saudi families that fly airplanes into buildings, for example. But that is a minor point.
