Book Description
Actor, singer, author, hair club poster child-William Shatner is all these things and more. So what if he's never won an Emmy, his singing isn't really singing, his books are ghostwritten for him, and his hairpieces are the subjects of widespread ridicule? To Trekkers and loyal fans alike, he is The Supreme Being. From Star Trek to T. J. Hooker, from Rescue 911 to TekWar, fans have maintained their loyalty to him and his work. He is a pop culture icon who has dared, many times, to go where no man has gone before. Now, with The Encyclopedia Shatnerica you can go there with him. You'll discover the strange details of his encounter with a UFO while riding his motorcycle through the Mojave Desert-an experience which later inspired him to record a psychedelic rock album. This unusual book contains all the facts, trivia, and other tidbits you'll ever want to know about William Shatner.
Formatted in easy-to-use A to Z entries, this encyclopedia volume contains Web site and fan club information, quotes from Shatner, his friends, and colleagues, and a time-line of his personal life. For the first time, it reveals all the essential facts about William Shatner, in front of and behind the camera.
Other books may detail the factual and fictional universe of Star Trek, but in no single place can one find reliable yet irreverent coverage of the wide world of William Shatner-Star Trek's most popular star. There is simply no other book like The Encyclopedia Shatnerica.

This book has to be updated with new material!.......2002-11-22
From what the author said in one of the reviews; his publisher altered his original concept and manuscript. My solution would be to repackage and update it. Shatty's Priceline troubles will hurt him again because there are still complaints in the news about that company. I have to say after reading Shatnerica I have a very different view of Captain Kirk. He may have had some talent but his arrogance is all that's left. He might have been a great actor if he acted like a human being and not the "leading man" he never was. Except on Star Trek that is. How many of the cast would want to work with him again?
I'd still have to say the author still accomplished his goal. He showed the audience that Shatner has none of the heroic qualities of a Captain Kirk.
Hilarious send-up of the legendary Star Trek captain.......2002-06-12
Over the years (decades), William Shatner has grown from simply an arrogant actor on a 60's sci-fi show to something of a legendary pop-culture icon. We have all heard the stories of his feuds with co-stars, failed TV shows, unique musical 'talents', and THAT HAIR! Now, in one place, the Star Trek and William Shatner fan can find a reference to everything that is Shatner. His detractors will find everything they want as well. Mr. Schnakenberg does not pull punches with his A-to-Z chronicle of Shatner's life. He delves into the ugliness of his disputes with fellow actors (most notably, James Doohan... aka 'Scotty') and his notable difficulty in his personal life (on his third marriage at the time of this book's release and now currently on his fourth following the tragic death of his third wife). But, he is also fair in his depictions. He goes to great lenghts to show caring and respect that both Shatner and Leonard Nimoy have for each other despite years of tension on the Star Trek set. Not to mention exploring the positive value of his "Rescue 911" TV series. Of course, there are also many humorous moments that are documented. Shatner's foray into the music industry with 'interesting' "The Transformed Man" album (now a cult hit) is covered as is one of the funniest moments in Saturday Night Live history when Shatner, playing himself, tells the assorted weirdoes at a Star Trek convention to "get a life!". Simply a fun read from beginning to end, the "Encyclopedia Shatnerica" is an cool addition to any person's library.
The man behind the rug (or, rather, underneath it).......2001-12-30
Diggin' through my endless piles of Trek-related literature one day, I discovered (or, more properly, re-discovered) this little alphabetical chronicle of the man behind Jimmers! An A-to-Z guide (from 'Airplane II' to 'Zmed, Adrian') that reads a little like an unauthorized biography, the Encyclopedia Shatnerica covers the man's many stage, screen & TV projects (most of 'em just gawdawful in the eyes of the author), as well as his thankfully short-lived musical career and those books that he allegedly wrote.
Also discussed are Shatner's legendary quirks, foibles, and just plain weird behavior that have become legend. More than a few great anecdotes from his fellow thespians are included as well, all broken down into a collection of brief, yet surprisingly informative passages. From the Trekkie Nation on down to those 'PriceLine' mavens, there's a little something for everybody in this paperback!
'Late
Get it while you can!.......2001-03-23
I, fo one, am sorely disappointed to learn that the Encyclopedia Shatnerica is now out of print. While unemployed last summer, I spent a day spent devouring this tome cover to cover and was yanked right out of my funk. So what if substandard work by an editor created a light scattering of inaccuracies? That's hardly the point: Schnakenberg's pricelessly witty, irreverent writing style still makes this an unforgettable read for devotees of the absurdities of pop culture.
The main problem with this book is...........2000-12-10
That it takes 90 percent of its information (pretty much word for word) from a horribly inaccurate unauthorized boiography called "Captain Quirk." It almost seems as if Author Robert Schnakenberg merely bought a copy of "Captain Quirk" and copied down all the information for the "Shatnerica." And as I said, it's WORD FOR WORD! "Captain Quirk" used trashy tabloids like "Star" and "Enquirer" for its information, and also printed second hand rumors as fact. So, the "Shatnerica" is loaded with false information, and more screw ups than I can count (not just about Star Trek, but easily found facts on Shatner's life as well).
So what is good about this book? Pretty much nothing, although it does have some cool rare photos. Other than that, skip this one and the dreadful "Captain Quirk."

Play Trumpet Today! - Level 1 (The Ultimate Self-Teaching Method)
The best - the DVD is excellant and so simple to understand. The CD is terrific and the book is wonderful but you do need to be able to read music for the book as my son only started the DVD was the best part as it did describe everything he needed to understand with first time trumpet.
He has played this to his friends that come over and rehearse with him and they also found it wonderful, they are only 10 and 11 years old and understand it easily.
Also Amazon products arrive in the best packaging and safely delivered by courier, the books and items will never be damaged due the terrific packaging and their impecible service and communication is just refreshing to come across. Thanks for such good service and products and undersstanding when being asked many questions with fast and speedy answers
Perfect for Beginners.......2007-05-07
I hadn't played a trumpet for over sixty years. So, I didn't think I could pick up a horn and start where I left off.
Instead, I made the wise decision to purchase this package. The DVD was perfect in getting me started again.
I didn't play the CD, which follows each exercise, using a CD player. I brought the CD into iTunes, which made using it very easy. I'm now up to Track 43 and, while I still have a long way to go for an eighty-year-old, I feel I'm getting there one day at a time.
Highly recommended (and worth the small amount Amazon is asking).
A great book.......2007-03-29
This book starts with the bare necessities. Every couple of lessons shows a new note and technique. It's easy to understand. The DVD that came with it shows how to hold the trumpet and what it should sound like. I learned enough that I figured out how to play other songs. I taught myself to play the Wallace and Gromit theme song.
I'm eleven years old.
A good way to start!.......2006-01-30
This method is a good way to start playing trumpet.
It even teach the basics of music theory, in a simple manner, in respect of the traditonal terminologies.
Introducing after a few pages, some simple but funny studies, it makes learning much more enjoyable that traditional trumpet methods which, instead, make you go on for week on usefull but boring scales amd arpeggios.
The challenge to reach the skill necessary to play a simple, world famous jingle, gives you enough motivation to overcome the unavoidable difficulties this instrument will make you face.
There is only one lack: the embochure and base sound producing, cannot be learnt from a book... you need a few lesson from someone expert in the instrument.
After a few lesson, proceeding will be a natural progression: just remember that every instruments need dedication and regular training!
You CAN!.......2005-03-15
This book is pretty comprehensive. It takes you from holding the trumpet/cornet all the way to playing, in time, to music on the CD. I would have liked more info on how to get different octaves on the instrument. They tried, but maybe a book just can't provide everything. I would seriously consider this book if you are just beginning and want to learn the instrument on your own.

Book Description
Hardy distrusted the application of nineteenth-century empiricism to history because he felt it marginalized important human elements. In The Trumpet Major, the tale of a woman courted by three competing suitors during the Napoleonic wars, he explores the subversive effects of ordinary human
desire and conflicting loyalties on systematized versions of history. This edition restores Hardy's original punctuation and removes the bowdlerisms forced upon the text on its initial publication.
Download Description
A tale of the Trumpet-Major, John Loveday, a soldier in the war with Buonaparte, and Robert, his brother, first mate in the Merchant Service. The present tale is founded more largely on testimony--oral and written--than any other in this series. The external incidents which direct its course are mostly an unexaggerated reproduction of the recollections of old persons well known to the author in childhood, but now long dead, who were eye-witnesses of those scenes. If wholly transcribed their recollections would have filled a volume thrice the length of 'The Trumpet-Major.' Please Note: This book is easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. The Microsoft eBook has a contents page linked to the chapter headings for easy navigation. The Adobe eBook has bookmarks at chapter headings and is printable up to two full copies per year. Both versions are text searchable.
Customer Reviews:
A superb character study, if not a great novel.......2002-08-24
I have read most of Thomas Hardy's novels--he is, along with Wilkie Collins, my favorite novelist--and this is the first one by which I have been disappointed. Still, a disappointing book by Hardy is worth ten by nearly anyone else, so let me explain. The ending felt quite out of the blue and abrupt compared to the events leading up to it, yet in retrospect, it makes more and more sense.
The ending aside--where the oddness is confined to just the last two pages--this is a superb character study of five disparate main characters and a handful of minor characters. Hardy is a master at imbuing each character with not only distinct personalities, but with the inconsistencies and flaws that make them leap, whole and warm-blooded, from the page. His characters are never stock people; they always seem as though they are people you could (or do) actually know in your own life.
The primary character is Anne Garland, a lovely country village girl who is much sought after by three different local men. These include Festus Derriman, a ne'er-do-well with a temper and a lust for his uncle's money; John Loveday, a soldier and the trumpet-major of the novel's title, who is the kindest, most patient character I believe I have ever seen in a novel; and John's younger brother Bob, who is a boisterous sailor with good intentions but a short attention span when it comes to the ladies. The machinations by which these three seek to catch Anne's eye is endlessly inventive and endlessly interesting for the reader, and her varied reactions to their attentions is a marvel of observed detail and the inconsistency of human nature. By turns hot and cold towards each of the men, Anne never seems shallow or thoughtless--merely human. There is also another sharply etched female character, the actress Matilda Johnson, who appears only a couple of times, but who is the linchpin of much important action.
As always, Hardy likes to insert subtle humor into even the most serious of situations. In detailing the village's concern about Napoleon (who is referred to frequently in the book by the derisive nickname "Boney"), Hardy writes:
Widow Garland's thoughts were those of the period. "Can it be the French?" she said, arranging herself for the extremest form of consternation. "Can that arch-enemy of mankind have landed at last?" It should be stated that at this time there were two arch-enemies of mankind, Satan as usual, and Buonaparte, who had sprung up and eclipsed his elder rival altogether. Mrs Garland alluded of couse to the junior gentleman.
You will be surprised, as I was, by the man with whom Anne Garland ends up. Yet now, just a day or two after having finished the novel and having been almost affronted by the abruptness and seeming insuitability of the ending, my position has softened and I can see that Hardy was actually quite true to the characters, their motivations, and their choices--however inconsistent they may at first have seemed to the reader. This is not by any means a great Thomas Hardy novel, but an average novel by Thomas Hardy is still a marvel of construction, of character, and of plot.
Very average Hardy.......2001-12-23
Anne Garland has three suitors - which one of them will win her hand? Hardy's "The Trumpet-Major" is set in Southern England during the Napoleonic Wars. This was a nervous time - tensions were high due to the threat of French invasion: this context permeates the actions of all the characters of the novel. Indeed, Hardy introduces into the narrative some real historical figues, such as King George III and Captain Hardy (of HMS Victory fame).
This isn't a bad book, but it pales in comparison to to Hardy's major novels. I like Hardy when he's at his gloomiest, when weird events happen in the depth of the English countryside. This book is pretty routine stuff both in its underpinning theme (who will marry the eligible young lady? - it seems to me that nineteenth century novelists were almost totally obsessed by this)and its lightness of style. Utterly harmless, but instantly disposable stuff.
Why Hardy?.......2000-03-31
She was walking through the library carrying the university's entire Hardy collection. I already had a nasty schoolboy crush on her, but after that day I was jello. And perhaps it began on the afternoon she lectured on Thom. Hardy, describing him as a poet who sacrificed his art to survive as a novelist. Yet, his novels were not pot-boilers, and Hardy eventually returned to his true muse. I shouldn't write this - let Linda explain it to you.
Clever, yet an altogether mediocre story........1999-11-01
This novel tells of the many turns of Anne Garland's heart takes as she decides upon one of three possible suitors. Each turn her heart takes affects the other suitors in ways which are humorous/clever, but the underlying theme is the pathos you feel for the unfavored ones, primarily John Loveday and his ultimate resolution. Overall not bad.
Go on - read it.......1998-12-04
Now I know this is not one of better known Thomas Hardy Books. And I know it probably isn't all that well thought of by critics who like the doom of many of his other books (that doesn't sound good, but if you get the chance read them anyway!) I like this because it is nice and simple, about a gil called Anne, who is in love with someone called Robert, who is continously unfaithful to her. And of course you have John, Robert's brother, who is in love with Anne. You sympathise so much with the characters. And, in this book, there is a happy/sad ending, but I would spoil it if I said any more. Without reading this, you might feel that Anne is a bit stupid to stand by her man, but just go and read it and you'll understand better. Perhaps this book isn't a great literary masterpiece like other works, but it is fairly easy to read, which is exactly what I advise you to do!
Customer Reviews:
One of the more respectful In Nomine books.......2005-06-04
In the world of In Nomine, two great forces struggle for control of the world: Heaven, the great hierarchy of angels that serve God, and Hell, the chaotic mass of demons that only serve themselves. Players can create characters from either side and battle for control of the hearts and minds of humanity -- those battles more often being spiritual or social in nature than physical.
Superiors 3 gives complete descriptions of some of the big movers in Heaven: Blandine, the Archangel of Dreams; Gabriel, the Archangel of Fire and Prophecy; Khalid, the Archangel of Faith; and Yves, the Archangel of Destiny.
Khalid's writeup in particular is interesting, since he is the patron Archangel of Islam. In his previous appearance in The Final Trumpet, he was portrayed as paying lip service to Heaven but unknowingly serving Hell ... it was blatantly racist and anti-Muslim. Superiors 3 fixes this, presenting both the original material and a revised writeup that more accurately portrays the Muslim idea of an Archangel (or, at least, as close as one can get without tons of research).
The remaining writeups are excellent. Blandine's is a bit, well, bland, as well as kind of pointless since you absolutely need the previous book she appeared in, The Marches, to get much use out of her. Still, there are a lot of good ideas, and the Menunim, her own private choir of angels, have strong story potential.
Gabriel's and Yves's writeups explore the major mysteries surrounding both characters as well as the connections between them. Yves, in particular, is one of the characters around whom the entire setting pivots, and a good understanding of him is absolutely vital for an In Nomine GM.
The whole book is very easy to read and clearly presents all four Archangels as three-dimensional characters, making it easy for the GM to run them. Normally, I'd say that the book is still only necessary if you're going to use these characters -- but you can't run In Nomine without at least having Yves in the background, so this book is pretty much necessary, period.
Earth is the battleground for Heaven and Hell.......2002-09-19
"GURPS: In Nomine", the game that proclaims: "Earth is the battleground for Heaven and Hell", allows players of GURPS to make characters that are Angels and Devils.
The plot is very simple - Angels are real, and so are Devils. God created the Universe with the aid of a Symphony - sort of like music that then controls things that go on in the world. Thus by using their own music, Angels, Demons, and even some people, can control parts of the Symphony and turn it to the cause of good - or evil. I must say, as a music fan, the idea of using music to create and manipulate the world appeals to me. This music is then used to influence events - from simple events like whether or not you go to the store today, to much more complex events such as a war. And =both= can cause a ripple effect that can influence the future.
With their almost magical powers and miraculous songs, both Angels and Devils can attempt to manipulate the events on Earth - possibly bringing about Armageddon. But such manipulation can cause a wrong note in the Symphony that can be detected by higher powers. It is only the efforts of other ArchAngels and ArchDemons that keep Ragnarok from occurring today. But there's always tomorrow.
It's yours to decide - do you want to play a fanatic Angel following the cause of light and good by attempting to keep the Symphony in balance, or do you want to play a fallen angel that is trying to regain their position in Heaven, or do you want to try a Demon that creates havoc wherever they go, or something in between? There are rules for creating several types of Celestials or Angels, and Infernals or Devils. You can even play a Corporeal or human, although they have a smaller part to play in this world.
It's loads of fun for players - they can try to use their powers and abilities to influence current events in the game world while trying not to cause dissonance - which would attract the attention of their bosses. And it's a lot of fun for the Game Master - they can look at current events and try to see how those events might have been caused by Angels and Demons fighting on Earth over humans and territory and then try to put that into campaigns.
If you want to try this game, be prepared. Some of the subject matter is very controversial. Some religious people may find the idea of pretending to be an Angel unusual, and the idea of pretending to be a Demon disturbing. However, having said this, I'd like to give this game four out of a possible five stars. I would have given it five had they included more material from the original sources, but interested game masters and players can purchase standard "In Nomine" books and easily convert that information to GURPS. I'd recommend the "Angelic Players Guide", the "Infernals Players Guide", the "Corporeal Players Guide", the "Game Master Guide", and the "Ethereals Players Guide" at least.
"GURPS: In Nomine" is based on the regular version of "In Nomine", which is also published in the US by Steve Jackson Games. "In Nomine" is, in turn, based on an earlier French RPG called "In Nomine Satanis / Magna Veritas" published by Siroz Productions. Try those if your appetite isn't quenched by "GURPS: In Nomine".

Great companion to "Rites of Passage".......2005-11-04
It makes no sense to purchase this workbook without "Rites of Passage", the companion job search book by John Lucht. If you purchase this workbook on its own to try and save money, you'll find youself going back to order Rites of Passage anyway.
This workbook is extremely useful at helping you put structure around following the advice dispensed in "Rites". It forces you to put down your thoughts using a logical and organized approach. This leads you to constructing a far superior resume and cover letter than you would have done otherwise.
A very valuable tool for someone seeking a new job in the $100K+ range.
You can't simply read the book, you have to use this workbook........2005-07-23
I read the book and loved it. When I bought the work book, my first thought was that this was just some kind of book '0 forms. Much like what you would find in a stationary store or at an office supply store. But I was wrong. This book is really two books. The work book is designed to be cut into two different books. One is a record book that enables you to track your entire job hunting campaign. The other book, and in my opinion, the most important, enables you to create an absolutely magnificant resume. If you loved the book, then this work book is an absolute must.
However, I must caution you that the workbook is, indeed, a lot of work. And so to really use the book, you must use the workbook. And to use the workbook, you need to exert effort. The rewards are great. This is a dynimite combination. He is really something else. I recommend this book very highly.
If You Were to Buy Just One Job Hunting Guide, this is It.......2003-07-15
This is a workbook based on John Lucht's book "Rites of Passage at $100,000+". It offers a way to organize your job search, including skills inventory, resume building, cover letter writing, contact management, etc. It can be used without the $100,000+ book, but ideally is used as a companion to the book.
Lucht's system outlined in the book is very narrow, advocating a mail campaign as the most important part of the job search. This workbook expands on that a fair bit, offering more resume and cover letter examples and a series of worksheets. The content is well thought out, especially the worksheets. If your plan is to organize your own work search, you can do everything with this one book - resume, cover letter, networking, interview skills, and negotiation. There are thousands of executive job searching books out there, but if you wanted to buy just one, this would be the one.
Best I've Found.......2002-09-23
As a senior officer transitioning from the military to the civilian sector, John Lucht's workbook is the best I've found for folks in our category. When used in combination with his Rites of Passage "textbook" and his website at RiteSite.com, you have a complete resource package to guide your efforts.
Conventional Wisdom for Morons.......2002-01-30
This book is simply a compilation of repackaged material that anyone with common sense could write down on a piece of paper. The anecdotes are hokey and the BOLD ALL CAPS punch lines are simply there to take up space. Save yourself some money by sitting down and taking the time to think of how to package yourself in your job search. Also, Mr. Lucht makes sure that his self promotion is woven throughout the book. The kicker is that the book is simplisticly and exasperatingly written in a kind of folksy style. My advice: find someone that you or one of your friends knows who has changed careers, take them out to lunch and pick their brain.
