Book Description
How do we picture ourselves dying? A "death with dignity"--the darkened room, and a few murmured farewells? Or in the lights-flashing, siren-wailing, chest-pumping maelstrom of the back of an ambulance hurtling towards an ER? Over the last decade, the two most robust vehicles of popular culture: film and television, have opted for the latter scenario. This book examines the high-tech death of the twenty-first century as enacted in our hospitals and portrayed on our TV screens.

Customer Reviews:
THE BEST THERE IS........2007-09-21
This is just about the most detailed revue of the main recording by Duke Ellington and his orch. the wealth of detail is staggering, the book is a work of both love and great beauty, so that all generations to come should understand the true jazz core of DUKE ELLINGTONS MUSIC.
One of the Best Sources on Ellington Recordings.......2006-01-29
I was more than impressed with the scholarship and knowledge put forth in this wonderful book on Duke Ellington. If you want to know more than just casual knowledge about Duke's recordings and his orchestra, then this is the book for you. Outstanding.
Best guide to Ellington's MUSIC.......2002-11-22
This book has been by far the most helpful guide for me in coming to know the music of Duke Ellington. Lambert didn't spend much time on Duke's personal life, talking about the man only when it was needed to explain the music. Not that there aren't some good insights into this fascinating individual here. But some readers may miss the swarm of anecdotes found in most works on Ellington.
Lambert follows Duke's work chronologically, alternating chapters which closely describe specific recordings with chapters discussing the development of the band more generally. The arrangement is very consistent, making it easy to find particulars on recordings, band members, etc. with a minimum of flipping about. The index is not always as useful as it should be, though.
The appendices give a good overview of the recorded Ellington in the pre-CD era.

Curious organization for an introductory guide.......2005-10-14
This guide to jazz would probably be helpful to someone new to the subject, but might be even better for someone who already has a bit of familiarity with jazz history. I say this because, although the book is not an encyclopedia of jazz, individual chapters are internally organized alphabetically, rather than chronologically. This produces some potentially confusing results for the newcomer. For instance, in the chapter on styles or genres of jazz, it means that Bebop is discussed before New Orleans jazz. Even Dixieland revival is discussed before New Orleans jazz. And they are all discussed before Swing. How lucky for the reader then that, in the chapter on jazz greats, so many early pioneers just happen to have surnames beginning with letters early in the alphabet (Armstrong, Bechet, Beiderbecke...). Imagine the potential confusion if Charlie Parker had been named Charlie Barker! Still, as a long-time jazz fan, I learned something useful in every chapter.

Not Very Useful At All.......1999-12-08
This book should be re-titled "Howard Blumenthal's Personal CD Collection". The artists that he lists are only a handful of jazz giants and innovators (he lists benny green as being one of the 100 greats, without a mention about Scott Joplin!). The selections do not contain a personnel listing (a must when it comes to jazz music), and there are a number of inaccurate facts (i.e. naming jelly roll morton's 1926 band as being the Red Hot Chili Peppers, a punk/funk group of the 80/90's. the 1926 band was the Red Hot Peppers.) While this may appear as nit-picking, it still makes the book a minor amongst the other greats (see: the history of jazz, Ted Gioia). Get the Penguin Guide instead.
Good Reference Work.......1999-04-09
This is a must-have reference book that is of great use to the jazz aficionado. It does have one glaring flaw, though -- not enough coverage of bossa nova and jazz influenced by Brazilian music (think of the hundreds of jazz interpretations of Jobim's compositions). For that I would recommend "The Brazilian Sound," which includes 1,000 titles in its discography.
Book Description
Now fully updated with a new chapter: The classic introduction to the bebop era and the legendary performers who created it. In the early forties a group of young musicians-Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, and others-began to play jazz in a style that no one even had a name for. It was a faster, lighter, edgier music, with melodies and harmonies that by previous definitions of jazz were "wrong" yet in this context sounded right-and revolutionary. This was the birth of bebop, and American music hasn't been the same since. In this authoritative work, Ira Gitler tells the story of bebop through the story of the giants of the music, their disciples, and the mavericks and transitional figures around them. Writing not only about the best-known masters but also about figures such as J. J. Johnson, Sonny Stitt, Oscar Pettiford, Fats Navarro, Kenny Dorham, Dexter Gordon, and Tadd Dameron, Gitler conveys the excitement of the music as only someone who was there at its peak can. Fully updated, with a new chapter and a revised discography, The Masters of Bebop is an essential introduction to bop.

Customer Reviews:
The best easy-to-read guide for beginners!.......1998-07-03
This book was not only informative but fun to read, something that cannot be said of most "music guides." What is more, the author was unusually fair to each era and level of jazz, giving as much time and space to, say, Sidney Bechet and Roy Eldridge as he did to John Coltrane or Miles Davis. He also makes his prejudices clear, i.e. he does not like funk or fusion. This not only helps keep his aesthetic pure but clues in the reader that they won't find John McLaughlin or "Bitches Brew" in here. The only real drawback is that the book hasn't been updated since 1993, and several CD reissues have come out since then. Yet, considering that this book reviews classic and timeless music, the author's opinions and taste remain valid and impeccable. Two thumbs up!

Helps to save money.......2000-07-09
This is a great reference guide for both the novice Jazz enthusiast and the connoisseur. It is wonderfully referenced and cross-referenced and is easy to read with biographical notes on the musicians and on the music itself and some great photographs of the artists and/or the album covers. With CD's costing the earth this book has given me the confidence to branch out in my jazz selections. I may not like everything that I purchase but I at least I now have a reference point to start at.

Latino History.......2007-04-05
This history is told from the point of view of the oppressed people detailing the horrible conditions in Chile during the Industrial Revolution.
Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent.......2007-02-07
Keep the good work upp!
A history written not by the victors........2007-01-31
I am rather obsessed with history, and was given the book by a friend from Chile. The nearest book I can think of is Engels' "The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844" (which I think is fairly well-regarded as a piece of historical reportage of how horrific conditions were during the industrial revolution).
Although a depressing account of how rich peoples exploit the poor, it is a great book (IMO). It was also unusual to read a history written not by the victors, but by the oppressed. What I would really like to see is a chapter written in 2007 detailing the lot of the majority in today's Latin America.
Outdated, bias, full with prejudice and lack of analysis.......2006-09-24
This book is one of the most bias and harmful books ever written on Latin America. The only reason for his success would be it was written in the midst of the Cold War, with the support of all the comunist propoganda. The book have no depth and lacks the most basic historical, economic and social analysis. Written by a bunch of second-rate writers, it hardly scratch the surface, limiting itself to play the victim's role some leaders like Hugo Chavez are trying to play today. There're many serious books out there to waste time with this one. If you're interested with the subject, maybe you should start with a history one, like "The two empires of América".
Trash-book.The bible of latino moron........2006-06-06
I tried to read this trash-book,here in Brazil, about twenty years ago. This book is so bad, that I never finished it.The author is a marxist and knowed faker, ridiculous and Fidel Castro's friend.
The core's idea of this trash book is the fantasy that Latin America became poor, from outside exploration and capitalism.
Nonsense believe.
Before latin America be discovered, slavery, human sacrifice and canibalism were normal day life for all latin-americans.About 98% of indians were unliterate, before european discovery. For the feminists, I must tell that women were sexual's products and work's source in the fake "paradises".I won't discuss massive human sacrifice, slavery, genocides, massives extintion of animals(such as mamouth) maden by "good savages" more.I must tell you that latin American was far worse before european influence, than today.
The fact that capitalism or exploration be, the source of latin-american's poverty is also absurd.Since colonial times, government's taxes, controls, government's robbery are normal in latin America. And this happens centuries ago.
Latin American is poor not from capitalism or exploration, but the lack of them. The most socialist country in Latin America is Cuba, and this the poorest of latin american countries. At the same time, the most capitalist country in Latin America is Chile, who also has the best quality of life.
This book is one of the biggests sources of latin American moronic believes. The autho itself is an expert in ridiculous books.
