Book Description
In
Star Gazing, Jackie Stacey puts the female back into the spectator, or the girl back into girl-watching. Combining film theory with a rich body of ethnographic research, the book investigates how women viewews understood Hollywood stars in the 1940s and 50s. Stacey's study challenges the universality of psychoanalytic theories of female spectatorship, prevalent within film studies for the past 20 years.
Drawing on letters and questionnaires from over 300 filmgoers, the author investigates the significance of particular Holywood stars in women's memories of wartime and postwar Britain. Among the stars discussed by Stacey and her subjects are Doris Day, Joan Craford, Betty Grable, Ava Gardner, Deanna Durbin, Rita Hayworth, Ginger Rogers, Jennifer Jones and Dorothy L'Amour.
Three key processes of spectatorship--escapism, identification and consumption--are explored in terms of their multiple and changing meanings for women spectators of the time. Stacey's work demonstrates the importance of cultural and national location for the meanings of female spectatorship, redirecting questions of popular culture and female desire.
Book Description
The Complete David Bowie is the most comprehensive book ever published on one of music's most brilliant, enigmatic, and enduring stars.
The career of David Bowie has been one of the most intriguing in modern rock history. This book chronicles the star's every movefrom his first appearance as Davy Jones in the 60s, and his spectacular, gender-bending turn in the 70s as Ziggy Stardust, to his starring roles in films like The Man Who Fell to Earth and The Hunger. This definitive reference also includes a production history and analysis of all Bowie's albums, hundreds of entries on all his songs, and set lists and histories of every live show.

This Review is on Updated Version.......2004-07-27
If you are a Bowie fan, this is must reading. Pegg is extremely accurate, and his accounts of the songs Bowie has written and the stories about how the songs were recorded are fascinating. He does a great job tying Bowie's lyrics and music to places and times in Bowie's life, creating a full picture of all that was happening. The accounts of Bowie's tours and albums are accurate and excellent reading, very concise without being wordy or over the top. To get the complete picture of Bowie the entertainer buy this book. I have been a huge fan of Bowie since 1984 and this is the best book ever done on him.
Its a great encyclopedia!!.......2003-06-07
The Complete David Bowie is definitely the best account of Davidýs work, presenting in the first part of the book each and every song he has ever written or sung and continuing with his albums, singles, movies and live appearances.
Donýt get me wrong, Nicolas Pegg has done a great and painstaking job and the book is a great source if youýre going to write a thesis on Bowie(!), but I wouldnýt call it fun reading, mostly because of its structure, which is similar to that of a dictionary or encyclopedia! However, there are many interesting facts and quotes that will draw your attention, and you get to hear the explanation of many of his songs from David! ýe.g. I didnýt know what the theme of Heathen (The Rays) was and why it brought tears to his eyes in one of his concertsý
I think itýs a very good and detailed piece of work, as long as you know what youýre getting!

The Best Book on Bowie for the serious fan.......2003-02-15
As a collector of Bowie's music, I found this book invaluable. It filled in some gaps in my understanding of the great ones music and cleverly clarifies the evolution process from one Bowie phase to the next.
The book makes reference to many rare and unreleased songs which is vital to a serious collector.
It is written plainly and factually with no hint of worship.
If you are only concerned with Bowie's music then this is the book for you. Essential.
The best.......2002-08-01
The best book about David Bowie, in a non-bio way.
The meat of the book are its song by song chapter, and album by album chapter.
The song by song covers every Bowie song, taking about its form and whats its about.
The album by album chapter covers each album in great detail.
The book also has chapters about Bowie's art, acting, videos, ect. In all it has nearly everything you'll need to know about David Bowie's career.

skip it.......2006-02-28
Obviously enough, Buckley had already written as much as he knows about Bowie in his definitive biography, which is definitely worth a read. This book has apparently just been shoved out there to make some more money; Buckley just provides a few very brief, random, chatty observations about the records. There's neither information nor interpretation, and this book is simply not worth reading, not even for dedicated fans.
Anyone seriously inerested in Bowie should instead try The Complete David Bowie by Nicholas Pegg, which is a mine of information.
nice to own.......2000-08-09
Although I don't agree with everything that David Buckley says on David Bowie in this book, I would recommend it to any fan. This book contains a song-by-song analysis from everything on The Man Who Sold the World until Outside. It also include a few words on some soundtracks and compilations. He does discuss the self titled David Bowie album and Space Oddity, but not in as much detail as everything else. This is a great book for any David Bowie fan to own and I'm recommending it to YOU.
Makes an unfaithful fan faithful........1999-10-09
I'll admit it. I'm not the biggest Bowie fan. But after buying this book, you get drawn into the "Bowie-ness". Everyone should have a copy of this book. My friend reads it everytime he comes over. The book becomes an addiction.
Compact Delight.......1998-12-10
This CD-sized book is essential for the Bowiephile and indispensable for those just discovering Bowie's genius. This book lists all of Bowie's albums and singles with a synopsis/review of each. It also includes videos, films and soundtracks. The version I bought came with a CD containing an interview. Customer Reviews:
Brilliant writing, poorly organized.......2004-09-30
This is one of the better sourcebooks I've come across in the past while.
With the 3.0/3.5 rules, it's so terribly easy to make just about kind of monster, class or race you want to, and many sourcebooks suffer as a result. There's such an abundance of material out there, and it's so easy to make more, and often what ends up in the books is the less daring, less innovative, less useful material.
If I wanted to know how to make every archon or eladrin into a playable race, I know how to do that, thanks to Savage Species. This book doesn't bother telling me how.
If I wanted to know how to use the SRD feats to develop feats appropriate for angels, I know how to do that, thanks to Skip Williams' columns over at wizards.com. This book doesn't bother telling me how.
Instead, this book focuses on the information that's actually useful to me, like what the different kinds of angels are, the names for them, how to make an angel of death or a fallen angel, plus added geography of the celestial and infernal realms. It's all new stuff, for the most part, and it's well-written.
I've heard some complaints that the writing in the book is a little dull and dry. I didn't find that at all, but angelology is a much stuffier and duller subject than most people are prepared for, and that's probably mostly responsible. For me, the writing was a lot more interesting than, say, most of the kabbalic texts on the subject.
There's good, cogent information here, everything you'll need to run a campaign full of angels, or just work up those one or two angelic beings to flesh out a campaign world. The spells and feats are heavily weighed towards the angels, but, hey, look at the title of the book. They're quite useful, too, both for game mechanics (several damage-causing divine spells, and some nice low-level buffs) and flavour (rite of baptism is both useful and adds a nice flavour to heavily divine campaigns).
My one complaint is that the information's scattered throughout the book. It's just not well-organized. The table of contents is relatively helpful, but this is a book in dire need of an index.
If you want to add a real taste of Heaven to your campaign, then this is simply a must-buy book. Combine this book with the Book of Exalted Deeds and you have a killer combo of goodness and light . . . which means that you can make the demons that much stronger.
Book Description
This provocative book explores the dark side of the soul inherent in every human being and explains how to channel it to prevent the pervasive violence in our society.
Bill DeFoore shows us why the only way to address the violence, cruelty and perpetration of harm in the world around us is to first traverse the dark dimension of our own soul. He explores anger from a spiritual perspective and shows us that, in order to be whole and healthy, we must confront and accept the shadow personality inherent in us all.
Drawing on historical events, popular culture and the true experiences of his clients, DeFoore weaves a compelling and sometimes unnerving look at the dark side. By exploring this meeting place between good and evil, he explains the natural roots of anger and why it emerges as rage in people, but is channeled in healthy ways in others. He reveals the precursors to toxic anger as well as the symptoms that show when someone is being overcome by it, which can serve as warning signals for anyone concerned.
With the alarming incidents of rage and violence on our highways and in the workplace and schools, this is a much-needed resource for parents, educators, mental health professionals and anyone concerned with the welfare of society.

Customer Reviews:
Quick easy read, Great Information!.......2007-08-05
I read this whole book on a flight from Miami to Seattle. I had just started an LLC through a Lawyer and wanted to get an idea of how to put together the Operating Agreement. This book had a great Operating Agreement example in the back. It also had simple examples for each scenario that helped me understand the best type of LLC set-up for my business. Nolo's Quick LLC covered everything I needed to know in an easy format to read and reference. After reading, I felt I was able to discuss my ideas intelligently with my lawyer and ask him questions I would have never thought of before.
An excellent manual essential not only to business owners.......2007-07-07
Most in business have learned the term 'limited liability company' - but few know what this means, let alone how to tailor a business as a LLC and to understand if and when such a structure would apply. NOLO'S QUICK LLC, 4TH EDITION provides all the basics to operating an LLC, from choosing different structures and understanding differences between a LLC and a corporation to handling legal and tax paperwork. The result is an excellent manual essential not only to business owners, but to business libraries seeking an easy yet comprehensive reference.
Informative, Provides a Framework, A Bit Conservative.......2007-02-12
Having just established my own Limited Liability Company (LLC), I wanted a book that would define what a LLC is in the framework of other business models, including tax and legal implications. I wanted to ensure that a LLC was the best fit for me. That is exactly what this book did, and it did it well.
If you are thinking of starting your own business an a LLC, but are not sure of which business model to use (Sole Propertiorship, LLC, Parternship, S-Corp, C-Corp), this book will help inform you of the pros and cons of LLCs, and how they fit into the overall legal and tax structure.
The only reason I rated this book at 4 stars instead of 5 stars, is that it scared me a bit in regards to the legal and tax requirements, without providing enough detail to give me a grasp on why the requirements were in effect. Having also been in contact with a certified tax expert and accountant while I was reading this book, I learned that this book errs on the side of being very conservative, or even a bit scary, in regards to legal and tax requirements. So I would advise anyone who gets this book to also balance it out by reading a more aggressive book about saving money on taxes and operating an LLC legally.
After reading this book, I also read "Your Limited Liability Company, An Operating Manual" by the same author. That book provides in depth detail on the day-to-day running of an LLC. It helped me tremendously. However, this book is also conservative when it comes to saving money on taxes.
Overall, both books are great reads.
Very Helpful Book, Helped Me Decide That An LLC Is Right For ME!.......2006-12-04
This book was not a disappointment by any means. I wanted to learn if forming an LLC was right for me and by the end of reading the book, I knew it was. Nolo's book was surprisingly easy to read and understand. Although the writer is a lawyer, he writes in every day speak and makes the concepts as easy to understand as possible. The book is also more entertaining then one might think. The only thing I would have liked to see as part of this book is a step by step list of who to contact to form the LLC including any forms or at least a link to forms you would need to complete the task. Overall, if you want to learn about LLC's and decide if the business form is right for you, then this is the right book to choose.
This book did what it set out to do.......2006-04-06
This got us started on the road to our new biz, but what it lacked was real help filling out the State forms. Nolo has another book that does just that (and I recommend it if you are really looking for help with forms). If you are still in the decision making process as to which type of business you want to have (e.g. partnership, LLC, corporation types) and what it takes to run an LLC, this is one to keep on your shelf. My favorite part of this book, Nolo's Quick LLC, is a great chart delineating the differences between different types of businesses.
