A wonderful close reading of Godard.......2006-07-06
Speaking About Godard is one of the more interesting and unique studies of Godard's films. Silverman and Farocki's close reading is a great idea. This yields impressive results, particularly where films like Numero Deux and Le Gai Savoir. Their reading uncovers many interesting connections that wouldn't be apparent any other way.
The book covers a nice selection of films. One can find studies of Vivre sa Vie and Weekend elsewhere, but these offer fresh insights. Regardless of whether or not one agrees with their conclusions, their readings will make one see these films in a different way. The chapter on Numero Deux is worth the price of the book alone. Though I'm sure many won't have a chance to see Le Gai Savoir, but the authors should be commended for tackling such a difficult, obscure film.
Other reviewers have leveled criticism of "lightweight" and "fluffy" at this book. These are entirely unfounded. Only the most superficial reading of this book would lead to such irresponsible and incorrect conclusions. The writing style is clear and accessible, and the conversational format makes it easy to understand. Just because the text isn't dry, pedantic, or prolix doesn't mean that the ideas and concepts aren't deep.
With so many books published about Godard, one must be very discriminating when deciding what to spend one's valuable time reading. Some believe that the idea of the close reading is unfashionable, but in this instance, it's a very effective tool. There's something here for even the most seasoned Godard fan.
a good way to start learning about Godard.......2003-03-13
The layout of this book is interesting and accessible. It is basically an extended conversation between two fans of Godard, who just happen to be very learned in film studies/theory as well. The chapter on "Weekend" is particularly good. If you are finding yourself drawn to Godard, but do not know where to start, try this book.
Film as Text.......2002-03-09
Even for those unfamiliar with all of Godard's films, these conversations are interesting. Although the book sometimes reads like a postmodern primer with footnote references and keyterms to all the 'right' writers of the sixties and seventies, the analysis is generally more complex and undogmatic. The scene by scene structure of each dialog also guarantees a trueness to the original "text" of the film, that is not always found in critical writing on film.
Godard Talk.......2000-02-08
"Speaking About Godard" by Kaja Silverman and Harun Farocki will stimulate Godard afficionados into conversations about Godard's work as the authors have themselves in this book. The authors devote chapters to selected works from the French auteur's oevre analyzing and debating specific aspects of the films. They attempt to find the meaning of specific scenes in the following Godard films: "Vivre sa vie", "Le mepris"("Contempt"), "Alphaville", "Weekend", "Le gai savoir", "Numero deux", "Passion", and "Nouvelle Vague". Some film stills accompany the authors examples from the respective films. You may not always agree with their analysis, but they don't always agree with each other. Of course, Godard's films are so rich with meaning, they are open to debate. The conversational style of the book makes it a great read for those stimulated by the great filmmaker's work.

Helpful and Essential accompaniament to the textbook.......2007-06-07
The exercises in this book are extremely helpful for reinforcing the text. Highly recommended for self-students, and commonly used as a college Music Theory text book.
Hmmmm.......2005-09-20
The book had a lot of writing in it and it was said be "be like new." It was nothing like new, the pages were very beat up and much of the comb bounding was broken or broke soon after getting it. The book was in horrible condition to be like new.
Unhappy customer.......2005-09-13
Very fast service, but faulty product. The workbook had missing pages, and this was not described anywhere in the product description. This caused me to earn a grade of zero for my first two assignments, as the workbook pages weren't in my book. Sure, the seller offered me my money back, but what good does that do me now?

Great for those new to music theory........1999-12-03
As aa former computer science professor who is trying to teach himself the fundamentals of music theory, I have found this book exceedingly easy to read and learn from. Along with his book on Elementary Harmony, I feel I have received a sound and very useful emersion into the world of music harmony.
recommended.......1999-07-19
This book and its companion, the author's "Elementary Harmony", though a bit plodding, are the most practical part-writing texts still available. (Consider, however, that I am familiar only with an earlier edition.)
Also recommended: PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by JEFF BURNS.

Excellent Material.......2005-07-19
Great review of "the essentials" given before getting into the meat of the text, including ways to help determine key sigs, etc. Audio CD a big help.
the most horrible theory book in the world.......2000-12-25
this was the text book that was used in my college intro to harmony and tonal counterpoint. it was full of mistakes and was very difficult to follow. my professor even expressed his hatred of this horrible, horrible book, but yet my university feels inclined to continue using it. if you really want to learn voice leading and harmony, find another book.
Yeah.......2000-03-22
A good book, better than many others I have used, but as otherreviews describe, it contains many blaring errors. Its text is muchmore readable than other books I have used, though.
Students Beware.......2000-01-24
This is a well-designed book, but is marred by an incredible number of mistakes. It's truly unbelievable. I realize that these exercises can be tricky, but the publishers ought to be ashamed that, after four editions, they have allowed mistakes to remain in nearly every assignment.
Why is it that the majority of first-semester music students can find so many mistakes, yet the professionals who put the material together can not see glaring errors that jump right off the page? This is the most unreliable text I have ever used. It's not unusual to find a mistake here and there in technical books, but I identified literally dozens in just the first half we covered in Theory 1 class.
If you are required to use this book for a class, then you don't have any choice--just be very careful. If you are studying on you own, without the benefit of others to help catch all the errors, then you will want another book.
Conceptually solid, but many printing mistakes.......1999-10-20
The fifth edition of Elementary Harmony is a still a good text that stresses fluency in theoretical fundamentals. It moves more slowly than some competing texts, which I consider a plus. It is a text that teaches mastery of theory, not merely a survey of theory. It is much more readable (less pedantic) than old editions of Ottman. This edition is riddled with printing errors. The publisher is aware of this, and I know from personal experience that they are taking more care in the new fifth edition of Advanced Harmony. Elementary Harmony is in need of a new printing, but the publisher is seeking input to improve the accuracy of any reprint. To summarize, the concepts and sequence of the text presentation are very good, especially for students needing thorough grounding in fundamentals. The excessive errors will confuse students, but a reprint of the edition can easily correct the errors.

BEWARE OF THE GODS!.......2004-08-10
Faiths and Avatars, Powers and Pantheons, and Demihuman Deities make up for one of the BEST Forgotten Realms accessories (they are in trilogy form) ever made. The Trilogy sheds light on exactly what the title says: Gods-and there sure is lots of them! The books, which are very well written and very well presented, also focus on other areas such as each church's distinct culture, tradition, and history. As a result, they will win you over for sure!
Eric Boyd does a FANTASTIC job of presenting the different pantheons, ranging from background history, to rank descriptions, to their respective magic, thus allowing for the creation of important people and characters, to adventure hooks and encounter tables, to magical items and artifacts, to new spells and treasures. This accessory has it all and more!
Each god has his own supplementary text information, clerics' and worshippers' alignments, Specialty Priest class and their alignments, church symbols, specific spells, special abilities, dress garb, even information relating to actual temples.
For other FR references/adventures, I STRONGLY recommend: the Old Empires accessory on Chessenta, Mulhorand, and Unther, Dreams of Red Wizards on Thay, Dwarves Deep, Draconomicon, the Jungles of Chult and Moonsea accessories, the Shadowdale, Tantras, and Waterdeep adventures, the Ruins of Myth Drannor (Elven pantheon) and the Ruins of Zhentil Keep Box Sets for Bane vs Cyric material (they are Second Edition AD&D, out of print and it will take a bit of searching, but it's well worth it). For updated editions of events in the Realms, see the Third Edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, which even though is quite expensive, is still very useful to all FR fans.
Moreover, for those interested in the gods, the Forgotten Realms novels to read are: The Avatar Trilogy- Shadowdale, Tantras, and Waterdeep, the Prince of Lies, and Crucible: the Trial of Cyric the Mad. In addition, the Ring of Winter is relevant to the Chultan pantheon and specifically to Ubtao, as it is the only novel set in the Jungles of Chult.
Faiths and Avatars, Powers and Pantheons, and Demihuman Deities along with the Forgotten Realms Adventures accessory, and the three Forgotten Realms Campaign Settings (one for each edition) are a "must!" They all compliment each other.
Whether you are playing in the Forgotten Realms or in the Planes, this trilogy of books will be of tremendous help in collecting all the information you'll ever need.
A good addition........2001-11-11
Useful for the culture of any demihumans your group may be encountering... I don;t find it ESSENTIAL, but it IS nice to look at every now and then....
Highly Recommend.......2000-08-09
This is the third book dealing with deities in the Forgotten Realms. This is the only book dealing with only demi-humans. If you are running a drow campaign or need information on drow gods it is here. There is also elves, halflings, gnomes, and dwarven gods presented. If there is any demi-humans in your campaign this is a must so that either the DM or PC can have a better understanding of the religions on the Realms as a whole. One problem is that is some instances they refer to the other two books (Faiths and Avatars, Powers and Pantheons) in the series. But neither is truly needed if you are running a demi-human only campaign.
Finally-Demi-Humans can be more than Generic Clerics.......2000-03-29
This book is absolutely amazing in the depth of information that is available. All of the playable demi-human races from FR have their faiths described in detail, from history of the deity to the actual make up of their churches, etc. This book definately is of aid if you DM or play in a group where individuals love to play demi-humans because players do not have to be priests to enjoy some of the benefits. Also, it allows priests to more closely mirror the ideals of their dieties, namely with regards to specialty priests. It has made several players in my group who viewed playing a cleric as a "medic" appreciate playing clerics again. The volume of information that is available in this book is a tad bit overwhelming at times and a few of the specialty priests are too powerful in my opinion but overall this book is definately a must have if you are running a FR campaign. It will open players up to playing clerics more often, providing them with the means to have a rich background and meaningful interactions within their faith.
Useful for the unwilling to draw on their creative energies.......2000-01-04
I don't know about you, but I can easily emulate nearly every aspect of this book with flying colors. Pantheons are probably the easiest task a DM has in his campaign - all he has to do is pick several belligerently-sounding combination of sounds, call upon his knowledge of any mythos, and, presto!, a pantheon. Giving powers to specialty priests is not the hard part - the hard part is putting the motives behind the gods, at which I can't say this book succeeds too well. Unless you have a hounding desire to perfectly comply to the letter of the Forgotten Realms materials avalable, I don't see this having much success among those who want to create rather than copy.
