THOROUGH LOOK AT MANK.......1999-11-28

What a shame this work is not in print. It provides a comprehensive look at the career and character of a great film auteur. However, if anyone is interested in Mankiewicz's film style, another book in print does give a great examination of the making of the Quiet American in Vietnam. It tells the true and detailed story of Mank's problems there. See A THINKER'S DAMN by William Russo.

Not That Easy.......2006-11-01

Chris Coetzee's approach is unique. This book is a mixture of music appreciation and violin tutor. It avoids the drills and repetitions that most beginners' books use. After a few simple exercises for finguring, bowing and the mandatory Mary Had a Little Lamb, the author launches into a chapter on interpretation, with pieces to play by Elgar, Bach, Mozart, Haydn, etc.

Each piece in this section has an accompanying 1 to 3 pages of text on the composer, style, history, etc. and the reader is encouraged to do further research to make sure they have thought about interpreting the style. E.g. before playing the first piece, by Elgar, Coetzee tells us to "find out what you can about [Elgar's] life and the time in which he lived, to get some insight into how to interpret his music". Seems a bit like jumping into the middle of the Pacific Ocean, for folks who, if anything like me, are still struggling to hit the right strings and draw the bow so that it doesn't sound like a screeching cat.

Rather than having music theory points interspersed throughout where relevant, Coetzee puts it all in a ten-page chunk at the beginning. This might give you an overview, but I imagine it would be difficult to synthesise all the information for easy recall when it is needed.

This book is definitely not one for kids. And avoid it if you just want to learn some stuff about simple violin technique and some tunes to play. I also wouldn't recommend it if you prefer to play by ear, as Coetzee focuses very much on reading the notes on the page. This book might be interesting for those who want some background info on the major western classical musical styles as well as some music to play on their violin.

In short, this is a reference book and not a how to book. Not organized very well, many advanced topics are covered before more basic ones. Assumes some working knowledge and does not define all terms used.

Wonderful History of Kuchipudi.......2001-07-24

Kuchipudi Bharatam is a delightful and descriptive history of the Kuchipudi dance form from its origins to the present day. It is peppered with enlightening and entertaining anecdotes which keep you reading for more. Although a little knowledge of Telugu or Sanskrit is needed to fully understand this book, anyone can read it and understand the jist of every chapter. It is definately a "must-read" for every lover of Kuchipudi. Dr. Uma Rama Rao has definately provided a very interesting outlook on the history of Kuchipudi.

Major league advice for small timers..........2007-08-06

This book's reputation proceeded it and I found it to be all I was expecting. It is thorough without getting lost in unnecessary detail, and when more is needed, or advice specific to a region or subject, he leaves the reader with clear guidance on where it can be found.
As a self-employed contractor, designer, millwork and furniture maker, my 37 years of experience has born out all his advice and I have made my share of - if not all - the mistakes he warns of. And done some of the right things. He comes as close as I've found so far to a source of advice on not just what's right to do, but what's practical, what's realistic and (even) what people can get away with.
I will be using "Small Time Operator" as an adjunct text for the cabinetshop management classes I teach at our local community college.

Good Basic Textbook.......2007-05-16

The book covers some business basics which makes it handy and useful for those venturing into new businesses but with limited background on how to start and run a business. The areas covered include the start-up process, marketing the business, bank accounts, bookkeeping, cash-flow forecasting, tax returns, business plans, legal entities, financing, import and export and insurance. The book is written in a simple and easy to follow style. Therefore I recommend it to budding entrepreneurs as it provides valuable advice that should help you start and nature a successful small business.

Those with some business background will likely find the book to be too basic and can therefore pass this one.

I've bought and given away several copies of previous editions of this book over the years. I just ordered this new edition because previous editions have been full of practical advice on setting up a business and giving it a good start. It's also a lot of fun to read, believe it or not! Good Basic Textbook.......2007-05-16

I have a version of this book that my father in law purchased in 1993. I know quite about about small business topics, and I learned so much of the little missing items from this book. My father-in-law has a million of these books on starting a small business, which he loaned to us when we started ours.
I quickly put the others down after scanning through a few chapters and not finding much information. All the books seem to be on choosing names, locations, and "Starting" a business. I wanted more information on "Running" our business, which is exactly what I found.
I scanned through a few pages, and what I read was so great that I went back and started from the beginning and read every word I saw. I truly found this book to be the most informative and realistic book out there.
I haven't purchased a newer version, because I still use mine. Infact I re-read many of the chapters every week, they are still valuable to me. This book sits right on top of my filing shelves.
I did, however, purchase the software from the bell springs website yesterday.
I use quickbooks and also a written record (using accrual and cash methods) and balance them out together. I really liked the forms he uses in the back of his book, they are so simple, yet really cover everything I need. That is why I purchased the software so I could use them.
My opinion of this book is very high, simply I beleive it is the best I have ever found. (By the way, Bell Springs Publishing website has a money back guarantee also) We run a service shop now, I hope to open a small retail shop soon, and I will be using this book for that as well. In fact I already am, to figure out how I will set up all my information on a different type of business.

"Small Time Operator" by Bernard B. Kamoroff makes you wonder if he ever made it big or just remained small. I agree this is not the bible of business practices. However, the info isn't all that bad. It just lacks real meat.

There are better books on how to start and run a business. This one is long on words and short on useful, practical information. Reads more like an accountant trolling for business by harping on complications than a genuine self-help book.
I bought based on the recommendation of a (well-written) book on self-publishing. Wish I'd read Amazon's comments first and spent my money elsewhere.

First of all, let me say that I do not agree with the five star reviews nor do I agree with the 1 star reviews. That said, I feel this book is smack in between and does offer some useful information, especially for the newbie to business.

Five stars reviewers are too generous and 1 star reviewers are way too critical.

Good book and worth a read.
