Why did the male nude become an object of spectacle and erotic display in French painting and sculpture in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries? And why have art historians turned a blind eye to the "crisis" at this historical turning point in the representation of masculinity, away from idealized models to that of androgynous and feminized male nudes? Why was the male nude later eclipsed in art by the female nude? In this pioneering and compelling book, the author explores how the beautiful male body dominated neoclassical visual culture, and why it spoke so powerfully to male spectators. Whether in the guise of virile heroes or languishing adolescents, in both familiar and now-obscure works of art, the imagery of ideal masculinity raises important questions about the fashioning of masculinity itself, as evident in contemporary mass culture as in the elite culture of the past. Drawing on feminist, psychoanalytic, and critical theory, as well as art and cultural history, Solomon-Godeau proposes a radical reassessment of neoclassical visual culture.

A Crisis in Explanation.......2007-05-30

I suspect that buried somewhere in these 264 pages of largely unreadable prose is a rather interesting 20 page essay. I'll confess that I gave up trying to find it about halfway through the book. The insights offered simply weren't worth filtering through the difficult writing style. For a wider-ranging and more readable book, I recommend THE NUDE MALE: A NEW PERSPECTIVE by Margaret Walters.

Fine scholarly document but lugubriously written.......2001-08-16

Abigail Solomon-Godeau is clearly a bright and well researched scholar. She takes on the strange task of examining the evolving appearance of the male nude from virile to fey in paintings at the close of the 18th century and into the 19th century and finds in this path of thinking some fascinating insights into the core of feminism. Her premises are sound, her arguments are strong. She has devoted much time and skill into opening the door on a problem that continues to vex us - why are we so terrified to paint the frontal male nude now? Her book slowly unfolds a well documented, well illustrated exploration of why the French Revolution and its aftermath gave impetus to the feminist movement and why, in turn, the male nudes in the paintings of the previous centuries were feminized and subsequenty replaced by female nudes.....a situation that persists into 2001. My only reservations with this book is that it reads so slowly, due to the style of writing. As a Doctoral Thesis this might be expected. But for the art reader it is hellish work wading through much of the verbiage. But, stick to it and you will be handsomely rewarded in the end. This is one very bright lady who has added considerably to a festering question in representational art.

All That Trouble.......2004-10-10

Ibn, Colin, Michael, & Dexter have all known each other since college when one of their closest buddies died a promise of sincere gesture of watching over his baby sister is made but when that little sister is all grown up and graduating from college the brothers take in their own hands to make sure that she is taken care of. Erika is a medical student who has fallen in love with one of the brothers and isn't too sure what to do about it. When all of the brothers are known to act on feelings a test to discover how far everything goes is set into place.

Erika plays the lady model in the lives of the brothers she is known to give them advice on their lady friends and she is known to scold them when they have done wrong.

Marcus Major took you into to examine the male and female heart. This story is something that makes you learns to accept the items of love.

This is the second book I have read by Mr Majors and it is excellent. His characters are so real. It is interesting to see their lives unfold and their relationships develop.
The relationship Bunches has with each guy is different and special in its own way. The way Mr Majors has her connect with one of them in a romantic way is sooooooo beautifully done!!!! The converstaions and interactions between the 4 guys are hilarious in some parts I could not stop laughing....This is a MUST READ!
I have just ordered A Man Most Worthy.....and I cant wait for his new book to come out!!!

4 Guys Are Always Trouble.......2003-07-09

As usually there are 4 guys involved in this book. Ibn, Dexter, Collins, and Mike. They are frat brothers. Erika aka Bunches was their frat brother's sister. His name was Trevor, and before he died of a blood disease, he asked them to look after his sister. Trevor and Bunches mother was killed in a auto accident. Their father was not around to raise them.

As the story goes, each of the guys has their own share of relationship problems, but when it comes to Bunches they committment to her brother Trevor stands above anything else. Bunches is growing up and an upcoming doctor.

The guys still see Bunches as a little girl that needs protection and they try to run every guy she meets away from her. But there is one guy they are unable to runaway.

Can you guess who it is?

I will tell you this, it is one of the guys who promised Bunches brother he would look after her.

Ibn was well educated but had double standards when it came to woman. In the end it cost him the woman he truly loved.

Dexter wanted to get out of a relationship, but a surprise was waiting for him and he tried to do the correct thing and handle his business.

Collins was a mama's boy and very naive, and I truly believe that Collins just wanted to be loved. He did get with someone who respected and cared for him and lifted his low self esteemed.

Mike, oh Mike, now I liked Mike, he seemed to have it together for most of the time. But when it came to Bunches, he too was over protective. For all the wrong reasons. He also tried to live in the past with a girl he always liked. This girl had become saved and he tried to get with it. But in the end his heart led him to the right lady.

This was a good book, very entertaining.

I loved this book. I have found myself a new male author that I can be proud of...

Your style of writing is refreshing and simply wonderful. The characters came alive from page one, and I couldn't wait to turn to the next page to see what was going to happen next. After renting the book from the library, I went out and purchased a copy in hardcover...

You did an excellent job MM... Keep up the good work.

Now on to the real reason for writing this review. Ibn, {which is one of the five main characters in the book} needs his own novel darn'it!!!! I need a sista to come along, and bring that high minded brotha to his knees!!! I need her to make him do what he is incapable of doing. Loving someone else, more than himself... Normally, I can't stand for a woman to play hard to get because it is so " romance novel" typical, that it becomes old and tiring, very quickly...But in this case I would love for that exception... Ibn needs a woman to come along that will not so easily give in to him; someone that can hold her own when dealing with him and that smart mouth of his, {read the book folks he will having you laughing out loud at some of the things that he says, I promise} and can eventually put it on him so good, that he has no choice but to fall in love. And when I say put it on him, I don't mean just the physical... He also has to be in love with her mind and will. She has to complete him.

For those of us who play or enjoy banjo but not necessarily Bluegrass, this gives a good variety of different songs in different styles. I think "Chopsticks" on the banjo is a hoot!

This book has helped us completely turn our financial problems around. It provides a realistic and simple structure for budgeting. We've been living it now for two years and the results have been amazing. We're now teaching our kids to use the principles and they are saving money for their futures. This book should be mandatory reading for high school students. A definite "must read" -- Highest recommendation possible!

This is one of the most useful books I've ever read. This book is not about high finances. There may be many small details that you may disagree about but that is not the point of this book. The great thing about All Your Worth is that it changes how you THINK about money. It offers ways out from your "negative thinking traps" that are the real reason why you have gotten into money troubles in the first place. And in addition, this book gives a simple fool-proof formula that you can follow. You can stop worrying about "am I saving enough for the future", "am I spending too much money on clothes" and "am I paying too much for my house". This book will give you clear answers for those questions. There are countless practical tips that have come very useful in our household. After reading All Your Worth and doing the excercises I finally feel in control of my money for the first time in my life (I'm 32). Even if you don't live in the U.S., most of the advice in this book is still valid although if you live in the Nordic countries like I do then the section about health insurance is not accurate. Still, a vast majority about the advice is universally applicable. Language will not be a problem either, it's written in simple language so you don't have to be a native English speaking person to understand it.

a very sound, very applicable and practical guide to saving money. Warren & Tyagi bust myths about money (like renting is throwing money away) and give a really useful guide to getting out of debt and investing for the future.

This is an excellent resource for regular people who don't have a lot of money sitting in the bank.

Best book on personal budgeting!.......2007-01-23

I highly recommend this book to anyone who finds that they just scraping by each month.

The reviewers who complained that the 50/30/20 plan is unrealistic simply missed the point. Yes, it's very difficult to squeeze a budget into this framework. Yes, it's sometimes downright impossible to get down to 50/30/20. However, 50/30/20 is goal, just like aiming for cholesterol intake. A 65/25/10 budget is still a whole lot better than a 80/20 budget--or worse--a 70/35/0 budget (yeah, spending more than you earn...lots of us do this).

By balancing your money--and the authors walk you through this process--you can focus your energy on the big ticket items and stop sweating over whether to buy Cherrios or generic "Tastee-Os" at the supermarket. If you find that a new purchase, like a car, a computer, a house, et al, will change your ratio for the worst, then you will know that's a big red flag. Finally, you will have the answer to "Can I afford it?", and you won't need to call Suze Orman every time you need to make a purchasing decision.

So if you're living in Silicon Valley (we lived in Orange County, CA, so I understand), like one of the unhappy critics, then start your budget where it is. (Even if its 70/20/5) Use the balance plan to influence your future purchasing decisions and to evaluate your spending history.

For the record, I am a stay-at-home wife/mom in my twenties, and our family of three lives on a Marine Corps seargent's salary. We have 20% of our income going towards savings. Two years ago, I was bringing home an additional $45,000/year, and we had $5,000 (+/-) of persistant credit card debt and auto loans, etc. We didn't even have our kid yet. Eek! Now, we have ZERO debt, growing savings, a retirement plan, and extra money for the fun stuff. Crazy, huh?
