Timeless sentiments are music to my ear........2000-06-30
The collection of quotations found in this book would warm any music lover's soul. They vary from witty to touching, but whatever the emotion the quotes chosen convey it is found in simple elegant phrases that have stayed with me long past the reading. Many repertoires of music are covered, so the appeal is wide. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to express a simple musical sentiment and can never quite find the words to say it.

A glimpse of how music should be appreciated.......1998-09-11
This book has been with me for over a year now and I still reference it frequently. It makes you realize what music really is. It's not some angry, aggressive sounding board, but a part of our souls, hearts and minds. The quotes in this book are reminders that beauty still exists in this world. Without it we would suffer. This book takes you back in time. It is relaxing and refreshing. A must for any true lover of music!

Average.......2007-06-21
I picked this book up due to the online line reviews and I was somewhat disappointed. The main characters were good but I think the action was very slow due to the fact that the author had some many volumes in mind for the series. Overall I didn't dislike the book but I would not really suggest it to a friend and it didn't interest me enough to buy any of the sequels.
An Epic tale that will surely please.......2007-04-01
I haven't finished the series yet but so far I have loved all the books up to book four. That is where I left off and have just ordered the remainder of the seven book series. King's Dragon is a rich tale with great characters. I would recommend this series highly. I have read and reread the first four books and they never fail to please.
Beautiful Series.......2007-02-19
Kate Elliott creates a complex world filled with strange creatures, forbidden love, politics, corruption, and everything needed to make a strong science fiction novel. The storyline is complex, and each book needs to be read right after the preceding one, but it is well worth all 7 books. By far one of the best series I have ever read in my life, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves tales with dragons and strange creatures. Bravo Kate, these books in the Crown of Stars are intelligent and amazing.
Elliot is a mesmerizing writer.......2006-11-17
Even when I was gnashing my teeth in frustration at the slow development of the plot, I kept reading because the characters are so finely drawn that it was impossible not to keep reading. I was familiar with Elliott's writing from her previous series BOOKS OF THE JARAN, and knew that no matter if it seemed like a digression, there would be a reason for the sidebars. It is entirely possible that much of the plot will not come together until volume five of the saga. In the meantime, I was fascinated by Alain, Liath, & Sanglant(I think they are the major main protagonists, but there could be more); even the Eika and Sabella with her tame sorceress, Biscop Antonia were fascinating. (I'm sure Frater Hugh, now Abbot Hugh, will turn up again in the pantheon of villians).I have PRINCE OF DOGS (vol 2) and am ready to see what the next step will be.
Hard to explain!.......2006-08-13
Where to start.....I have a hard time describing this book, It is so involved and I can't even say if I love it or hate it, but I couldn't put it down either! I think I kept reading it because I wanted so much for something good to happen to the main characters. I kept thinking "she has to get out of this situation!" Finally after three fourths of the book it does. Then I start waiting for her to get some courage and stop acting like a beat down puppy. But instead of getting frustrated with the book and giving up on it I keep reading! Why? Iam not sure! I must like something about it because I couldn't put it down I'm just not sure what that something is yet!

An adventure set in the Midnight campaign setting for the d20 System, a world where evil rules and darkness has fallen across the land, where heroes are condemned and the elder races are hunted to the brink of extinction. In this scenario, the heroes must face off against the creatures of shadow, striving to bring light to a world dominated by the forces of evil.

SUPERB CAMPAIGN FOR GROUND-BREAKING WORLD.......2006-11-04
CROWN OF SHADOW is a campaign for low-level characters that is set in the world of MIDNIGHT. MIDNIGHT is a dark world where the forces of evil have won and the heroes are the hunted. Both the use of magic and reading are capital crimes, as is the possession of weapons or armor. Even food is scarce. Orcs are the elite fighting forces of this world and the only clerics left pray to a dark god enthroned in his dark tower. Humanity is being ground into the dust, halflings are universally enslaved, the dwarves are losing a war of attrition and even the elves are being driven back. In short, it is a world in need of heroes.
The world of MIDNIGHT differs from standard high fantasy sufficiently that players would benefit from a campaign that would take them across the entire world, to see how each group under the Shadow is resisting and what price they pay for doing so. They should meet all of the surprises that MIDNIGHT has in store and get a sense for the corruption of their world, the better to motivate their struggle against it. CROWN OF SHADOW is that campaign, a story arc that takes the PCs through the lands of the dying dwarves, crushed humans, subversive river gnomes, and the vanguard of the elves. The PCs will experience almost all of the twists of MIDNIGHT and see all the major locations; in that sense, it serves almost as a gazetteer for the players. I'll admit that the "crown of shadow" is quite the macguffin, but the campaign is about the journey not the destination.
CROWN OF SHADOW is designed for 1st level characters and can run them as high as 5th level. This campaign is designed for the 1st edition of MIDNIGHT and uses 3.0 rules, but I didn't find any problems using this with MIDNIGHT 2nd edition or 3.5 rules. There are 7 chapters of action, plus an epilogue which follows the conclusion fo the story. The booklet itself is very readable - I particularly appreciated the synopsis at the beginning of each chapter to keep track of what should be happening. Each chapter also has subsections to keep all the information organized.
I thought CROWN OF SHADOW was a well presented campaign. In fact, it should be indispensable as a resource for any MIDNIGHT campaign even if the material isn't directly used. The challenges seem well designed, with some good combats, some puzzles, and social interaction. I would highly recommend it.

Heir to the dragon emperor's throne, the young, shape-shifting drake Kyl is the focus of many who seek to control the realm's destiny. Cabe Bedlam most of all hopes that this new emperor will be the signal for peace among drakes and men, but knows that he might just as well prove the spark that brings the land to war. However, first Kyl must survive and in trying to assure that, Cabe will have to confront a nightmarish foe from his distant past, one who can strike at him even from within the wizard's own sanctum...

Great!.......2000-06-11
a great book about the Emperor's hatchlings and Toma's sudden reappearances (although he was really there all along) and evil plots. Kyl, the heir to the Dragon throne, travels to Talak and Penacles to visit the rulers before his coronation, accompanied by the power behind the throne- his brother Grath,Drakhorse, and his mentor Benjin Traske. Interesting things happen while they are there- an assasination attempt that ends up killing Toos, a ceremony in the crypts of Talak. When they return, they are taken prisoner by none other than the infamous and powerful Duke Toma at the Manor. It all finishes in Kivan Grath, where a battle to the death between Toma and Cabe has a somewhat tragic ending. But I cried in Godzilla. Toma has always been a favorite of mine- the drake you love to hate. A must for all Knaak fans!
Customer Reviews:
It's a book. No, it's a game!.......2005-10-26
This is volume 9 in a set of books produced by TSR as one of their many, many innovative efforts to keep their RPG (Role Playing Game) ball rolling.
Anyone familiar with the Choose your Own Adventure books will recognize the basic format. Every page or two, the book gives you some sort of choice, and you flip to a different section of the book based on what decision you make. Because different readers make different choices, the book can provide a whole host of stories based on the interaction.
These Adventure Gamebooks go one step further (and write the prose a bit better). In this book, you not only make decisions, but you also roll dice to determine the outcome of the things you attempt to do. In the beginning, your dice rolls give the main character different attributes (such as great strength, or great wisdom, for example), and the character's scores in these areas might facilitate dealing with a problem that crops up in the book.
One appeal of this type of book is that, for gaming geeks, it can be difficult to get a game going, requiring as it does many hours of participation from several people. Adventure Gamebooks represent a chance to scratch that RPG itch without needing a friend to play with.
This particular book is the second in a trilogy within the series, which marks another improvement over the Choose Your Own Adventure books. The Kingdom of Sorcery trilogy follows the adventures of Carr Delling. It's more fun than some of the other books in the series because there is a broad array of spells that can be cast, which adds some flavor.
I'd recommend these books to the person who has enjoyed the D&D or Choose Your Own Adventure experience. They're a neat idea, even if they never really took off.

Royal drama in the realms of Mystara.......2000-05-02
This highly coveted module is a tour de force - this dark, dramatic adventure (for levels 7-10) embroils the heroes in the political intrigues of Mystara, preparing them for the time when they will be called upon to rule. The kingdoms of Vestland and the Ethengar Khanate, forever at odds, are on the verge of war - the holy Sonora Crown has been stolen, and an heir has not even been named! In a valiant effort to stave off the inevitable, the heroes are called upon to do the impossible - journey from Ruthin Monastery, to the Red Fangs and the lost isles, to Seaforth Tower and Narvendul and more, in a vain, desperate search for the Crown! A wonderful adventure.

Excellent buy..........2007-05-29
Book arrived on time and in condition expected, well packaged and perfect shape. +++++ experience
Great direction for not-for-profits.......2007-05-07
This book gives great insight into motivation, organization and function of a not-for-profit organization. The fundraising section lacks a thorough understanding of philanthropy and it's role in funding not-for-profits, however, the overall business approach to management can shift an organization to greater success.
A must not-for-profit manager read.......2001-10-27
I took a seminar from Peter Brinckerhoff about 5 years ago. I went out and bought his book Mission-Based Management right away. It is by far the best Not-For-Profit Management book I have read. I have since purchaced his entire series. The books have given my some great steps in improving our agency.
A Must for Non-Profit Managers.......2001-07-14
This book is a practicle, no-nonsense guide to running a not-for-profit organization. I have been involved in not-for-profit organizations both as an executive director, chairperson, and consultant for over 20 years and still learned a great deal from this book. The writer focuses on 'mission' in the organization but goes much further in relating it to the every day operation and management of the organization including: board fundction, managing people, technology, social entrepreneurship and more. It is a straight forward, practicle, and filled with answers to some of the more complex questions in running a not-for-profit.
The chapter on the role of the board of a not-for-profit was especially helpful. I passed it on to an organizations new chairperson and it helped her in clarifying her role as board chair, and how to bring in and orient new board members.
The book discusses the responsiblity of the not-for-profit to to make money, outlining the fiscal responsiblity of the director and board. It touches on the issue of setting up a profit making arm of a non-profit, and the important, yet complex relationship between the a not-for-profit and government.
This book is a must for new directors and administrators in the not-for-profit world and important reading for those who have been in the not-for-profit world for years. I borowed a copy from a friend and wanted a copy for my own library.

An Original!.......2000-03-31
Mission Based Management clearly focuses the reader on the steps that must be taken for a not-for-profit organization to become a high performance entity. This book should mandatory reading for every Board member and staff of a not-for-profit organization.
When the Board and staff understand that all decisions should be made entirely from the prespective of how that decision will impact the mission of the organization, the purpose for which the organization was founded will be fulfilled.
