Customer Reviews:
This Intro to Doc Film is superbly researched and relevant.......2003-06-11
This introduction is direct, understandable by the early student, global in its outlook and very strong on context and globality. Its ENTHUSIASTIC ! Not dust dry. Kochberg had a real way with cutting to the point and leting academic buzz words go ... we use this book in conjunction with Nelmes' Intro to Film Studies, now in edition 3rd at June 2003. In the latter Kochberg contributes the critical part 01 and sets the standard for the rest. Well done - this reflects Kochberg's lecture style and infectious enthusiasm.
A Great Book.......2003-05-29
This is a truly excellent intro to documentary production for University and College. Its scope is wide., the writer's enthusiasm in infectious and it is a dynamic and relevant tool for those starting on the doc production road. Well done ! We will use it again for academic year 2003-04.

Book Description
This lively introduction to television documentaries spotlights their history, production and reception, principal forms and functions and their adaptation to today’s programming needs. What impact has television's growing commercialisation had on the type of documentary broadcast? What has led to the introduction of an increasing number of hybridised forms? These questions are addressed within an examination of the role of institutions, documentary’s 'special relationship' with the real, and an insight into how audiences interpret the documentaries they view. Confronting reality has been written with the requirements of media studies students in mind, yet it is a must for everyone concerned with recording reality in the fast-changing world of television today.

Book Description
The past ten years have witnessed an enormous growth of interest in questions of musical meaning and the extent to which it is informed by cultural experience and socially-derived knowledge. This collection of readings will stimulate further debate. It includes critically-acclaimed work which broke new ground in exploring the cultural significance of music and its social meanings, and which had a marked impact on musicology throughout the Western world. Three dozen extracts, a number of them no longer in print elsewhere, are grouped thematically to address such issues as music and language, the body, class, production, and consumption. The extracts have been chosen for the focus they give to particular areas rather than to form any unified framework for studying music and culture. Among the contributors are Jacques Attali, John Blacking, Michel Foucault, Lydia Goehr, Lawrence Kramer, Portia Maultsby, Rose Rosengard Subotnik, and Eero Tarasti. This reader will appeal to students and scholars of sociological and theoretical fields of culture, as well as to anyone interested in why perspectives on music history and music meaning have undergone sweeping changes at the end of the twentieth century.

An Excellent Traveller Scout and World-Building Resource.......2007-05-02
Though I am not a user of the GURPS system, First In is a valuable supplemental resource for the Original Traveller Universe. I use my copy in conjunction with Traveller: Science-Fiction Adventure in the Far Future (Book 1 Characters and Combat), Traveller: Science-Fiction Adventure in the Far Future (Book 3 Worlds and Adventures) and Traveller Book 6: Scouts. It is highly useful for providing the additional level of detail which has become a hallmark of the GURPS Traveller: Science Fiction Adventure in the Far Future (GURPS Traveller) series. Well worth the original $20.95 cover price, and perhaps even a bit more, as this book has now been out of print for many years.
Good start for Traveller/Space creation.......2001-01-23
I bought this book mainly for the world creation tools. Lots of cool stuff on star and world creation, though it's spread out a bit. Would be nice if there were some pages in the back with all the tables you use for rolling up stuff in one place. The main information on the scout corp. is great! Already gave me a couple of scenario ideas. My only beef with the book is the lack of forms. I'm trying to put together a relational database of Traveller based space/planetary info and it's slow going, having to go through every page to find the type of info that needs to be stored. Working from a paper form with all the fields already defined is much easier. Oh well, I find futzing around with stuff like this more fun than actually playing the game. Go figure.
Traveller is back.......2000-04-01
It's nice to finally see the world of traveller back in print, this time in the world of GURPS. 1st In is the sourcebook for the Scouts, one of the more interesting settings for PCs. This book gives the readers a look behind the scenes of the Imperial Interstellar Scout Service as well as an extensive background on its organization and functions of each branch. Several sections of the book also deals with world creation and equipment. It's well written and really gives the reader a feel for being a Scout. The world creation section is rather extensive and like in the original scout book(traveller game) can be pretty daunting for the casual gamer. There is also a culture section for those who wish to flesh out each planet, complete with population, type of government, etc., each with explanations on what it means. All in all, much better than the original Traveller scout book and one of the better supplements for GURPS to be published.

Customer Reviews:
a horrible mismash of trivia, confusion, and self-promotion.......2007-01-28
The author's main qualification for writing this book is having lost millions (perhaps billions) of investor dollars mismanaging a hedge fund during the 1990s. He's very defensive about his abysmal history, and his main defense consists of reprinting for us the abusive emails he received after the fiasco. Poor Victor! Had to struggle to keep his kids in expensive private schools. You might think he learned some humility from his mistakes, but just the opposite. He is another vain, self-promoting, self-obsessed investment banker, and that will never change. He never tires of reminding his readers about the tennis and squash awards he's won, and he even includes a picture of his squash award! All this could be forgiven if he actually gave some valuable investment advice, but this book is just a horrible miasma of misinformation. He would try to convince readers that earnings don't matter and don't bear any relationship to stock performance, that P/E ratios don't matter. He gives several statistical analyses that, as another reviewer points out, are deeply flawed, contradicting other solid research. His confusing explanations are apparently meant to disguise the flaws in his research. There's no coherent plan to the book, just a bunch of poorly written chapters on random topics, such as correlating tennis to stock investing. I wish I could find something good to say about this book, but it stinks on every level. It offers no valuable information on stock investing, it's boring and confusing, and the author is so full of himself that it's pathetic.
Flawed Statistics.......2006-07-17
I found "Practical Speculation" lacking. The first two chapters were interesting, but the analysis of data in subsequent chapters were flawed, in my opinion.
Niederhoffer cites scatter plots as demonstrating correlation/predictibility of various aspects of the market. I looked at many graphs and didn't see much that showed statistical correlation. The correlation coefficients (R-squared values) were all very low.
The trading ideas were interesting, but the analysis behind them was misleading. You need strategies with better correlations to hurdle transaction costs, and then, maybe, you can make some money.
Excellent!.......2006-03-05
When it comes to clarity of analysis coupled with avant-guard writing ideas, you can't beat Niederhoffer and Kenner. This book shatters many investment and trading beliefs. Although I do not agree with everything between these covers, Practical Speculation is an excellent book. Niederhoffer's knowledge of applied statistics is obvious throughout the book, and he has many ideas clearly presented. This is a good antidote to much of the mumbo-jumbo which is contained in other books. You may not start to make lost of money after reading this book, but it might keep you from losing some!
Great book for a right purpose.......2005-11-20
Let's say you want to become a trader. Typically you go through a few stages.
1. You learn some basics about markets, stocks etc. You just know they exist.
2. Then you learn how to make transactions, pay taxes etc.
3. Usually somewhere here you think you're ready. So you start betting money and likely lose. A lot of people will drop off after that.
4. Now you've realized that you have to have a strategy. And this is the most difficult part. You need an advice. And there are plenty of people offering some "time proven" strategies. Ok, most of them don't work.
5. At this point you are ready for this book. It doesn't teach you basics, doesn't give you a how to steps to get rich quickly. Instead it shows you how really great traders make their decisions.
What is really great about this books is the timeframe it is based on. There are a lot of "old classics" or "pre bubble" books, they have a lot of good points, but they look disconnected from the internet crash and 9/11 era. The author clearly lives in our time and speaks about the markets now.
About the author. Yes, Niederhoffer ran his fund into ground once. A lot of people like to point that out. How many of you had car accidents? Doesn't mean you can drive anymore? His trading performace before and after that event were spectacular and if you read this book, you'll realize it was not a matter of luck.
Fighting Myths.......2005-11-18
It takes a lot of courage to write a book after collapsing as badly as Niederhoffer did, especially a book in which he goes against the establishment exposing the myths that they have used to profit at the expense of the herd.
No magical formulas in this book, but it provides two tools that well employed are indestructible, the pencil and the envelope.

Fantastic Elliott Wave book.......2006-02-21
This really is a great book. Neely did a great job of breaking down the wave theory into a series of clear rules.
But be forewarned; it's not an easy read my any stretch of the imagination.
Great historical reference.......2003-12-20
This is one of the 2 books that fills in all the details of Elliott Wave research and history in the time period between Elliott himself and today's Robert Prechter. The other book is the Elliott Wave Writings of A.J. Frost and Richard Russell.
In short, this book is a very necessary addition to any serious student of Elliott and Socionomics. It takes you through the history of great market calls as well as providing insight into how the knowledge of Elliott Wave has gotten to be where it is today.

Written by the greatest stock trader of all time.......2007-09-09
I spent $150 on this book with no regrets. After reading over 70 books on stock trading and studying the greatest stock traders of all timen in my opinion Nicolas Darvas is the greatest stock trader who ever lived. No one that I am aware of ever made so much money in such a short amount of time with such a small starting point. Darvas started with a few $2,000 in stock, his 1st stock quadrupled in a few months. With in a few years of trial and error he had turned $8,000 into $100,000 then finished out his final 18 months turning that into $2.4 million dollars. He then removed his money from the market due to no stocks meeting his criteria and avoided the bear market of the early 60's. On his journey he never lost any of his own money, only losing previous winnings.
I love this book and his previous one because he gives specifics, with dates and amounts of stocks he purchased and when he sold. His books are text books for stock traders. In this book he discusses how brokers and tip services make money off each generation of suckers in Wall Street and how to keep from being ripped off. I agree with his point that if your broker or the tip service were so great they would be following their own advice and making a killing in the market instead of working and selling you services and information for a few dollars. It is very important to be very careful in the Wall Street casino and not getted ripped off.
This book goes into much more detail than his other book and explains exactly how to use his techno-fundamentalist system.
His method of stock investment:
TECHNICAL-
Only buy stocks that have established solid price boxes and have moved through them consistently.
Buy stocks that move into higher boxes on increased volume.
Only buy stocks breaking into all time new highs after coming out of a previous solid price box.
Set on stop buy orders to enable you to buy the stock as it breaks out of the box into the next one. This is where the big moves happen.
FUNDAMENTAL-
Trade stocks based on there capitalation. This will determine proper volume and price movement due to number of outstanding shares.
Buy stocks in strong industry groups.
Buy stocks that have the greatest expectations of future earnings.
Even though this book has not been recommended by Willim O'Neal it is an excellent companion book for followers of the CAN SLIM method of stock trading. Darvas encourages us to bet on the fastest horse with the best record not to worry so much about the kind of hay it eats or spectators opinions. I have made $1,000's of dollars using these methods and you will to. This book is a jewel in the ocean of stock trading books.
Read How I Made 2 MIllion First.......2004-11-06
This book is no way near as good as the first. It is mostly the same material told in a less engaging way. He uses the metaphor of Wall Street as Roulette Game in a Casino which cheats it's clients. If you like Darvas's first book it is certainly worth reading to gain little insights on his method which youdon't get in the first. There a few new anecdotes and a chapter which explains his method but on the whole the book is not as amusing a read and lacks the freshness of the first, nor do I think it takes his story much farther than where the last ends. I would love to know what happened to Darvas in the late sixties and early seventies but not in this book.
a great continuation from 2,000,000.......2004-08-28
This book continues from where How I Made 2,000,000 left off. Nicolas refreshes the reader on his sound methods with his box theory and stop-loss. What i liked alot about this is book is how he actually draws in a great comparison on how Wall Street is much like Las Vegas! (Go figure)... Darvas gives us the realities to investing; its gambling! But dont worry, you can learn to clean the house in no time with the help of this book. Accept the facts, trust your instinct and gamble with confidence baby! But other then the gambling aspect, Nicolas repeats himself frequently throughout the book, which is the only downside. I would definetely recommend this book to anyone interested in what Wall Street really is!
A bona fide Wall Street classic!.......2004-06-15
Nicolas Darvas was both an excellent trader and writer. This book presents a clear exposition of his successful, break-out trading method. It shows how he was able to ride the winners by using his nested "box" system. Further, it shows how he used "techno-fundamental" screening to select only those issues which had the best chance for sustained rally after the break-out event. Event-trading is useful because it is real-time, gives definite signals, and affords minimal lag in response time. This book should prove to be of great utility to someone who wants to learn to trade or to improve his or her trading skills.
Disarming Title.......2003-03-04
Being the author of the book "Futures For Small Speculators", I am not a big fan for equating investing with gambling, but Mr. Darvas has successfully done it again. Somehow he is able to make the negative connotation of gambling and turn it into a lesson for the novice and experienced trading.
This is essential, because if you don't know what you are doing wrong, how can you learn to do it right?
So by making traders realize that their is a risk of loss it puts them on the alert.
Customer Reviews:
This is all you need.......2007-06-09
Recommended this book to two people recently so figure I should comment. If someone had purchased this 30 years ago and starting with $25,000 and about 3 positions and stuck with the program they would be worth a lot of money(I mean like maybe several million). All you need are these principals and a subscription to IBD(Investors Business Daily) digital edition(sent out 5 1/2 hours after regular market hours) to get earnings/revenue reports and your in the game!
Book Description
What Powerful Forces really govern your life and the Destiny of Mankind? In this groundbreaking work, author James E. Spencer, Jr. decodes an astonishing "spiritual technology" hidden in the Hebrew and Christian Bible. The Matrix of Destiny identifies a universal message coded within the Hebrew and Christian scriptures that tracks the progressive evolution of humanity from fearful survival oriented beings beholden to the manipulations of dark spiritual forces, to confident, God-empowered, Holy Spirit-led beings who recognize their most important acts are what they do in the service of others. The Matrix of Destiny holds the key to our system of Reality, and provides satisfying answers for many seekers of truth and meaning. The eye-opening result is the unveiling of Seven Progressive Revelations, which collectively define a powerful framework for understanding oneself, ones culture, ones-purpose and the archetypal influences, which motivates ones choices. It is a valuable and important work, with an irresistible message and a unique format. The Matrix of Destiny offers the reader an utterly compelling and singular Worldview which despite its roots in Judaism and Christianity, transcends, religion, race, culture, politics, sex and money. Enlightening, provocative, and right to the point, The Matrix of Destiny reveals an extraordinary tool for understanding and thriving in Reality as we know it.
