    Book Description

Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Marlene Dietrich-all were icons of beauty and glamour in 1930s Hollywood. Screen Style reveals the impact of celebrities like these on women filmgoers, looking beyond the surface of the films and fashions of the era-often described as forms of escapism from the difficult realities of the Depression-to show how Hollywood presented women with models for self-determination during a time of rapid social change. Revealing the public and cinematic fascination with the strong-willed women featured in so many movies-ambitious gold diggers, career-minded working girls, social climbers, dangerous androgynous females, and other exotics-Sarah Berry presents a lively look at films, fan magazines, and advertising of that time.

Sarah Berry writes on film, media, and cultural studies and designs interactive multimedia projects. She teaches film studies at Portland State University.

    4 out of 5 stars cool book!.......2004-07-17

what a cool book! I have one and I will keep it forever and look at it every so often. It's very nostalgic flipping the pages and pages of the glamour years and how much things have changed. I wonder if those pants-falling off style would make it to the glamour years for the future generation.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fashion Treasure Trove.......2002-11-29

This satisfying compendium of the fashion greats during the golden years of the silver screen will be enjoyed by any fashion buff. With plenty of gorgeous black and white photos, designer bios and trivia about the great screen stars, Those Glorious Glamour Years is a must-have. I probably checked out this book a hundred times at the library as a little girl!

4 out of 5 stars Retrospective of costume in historical films.......2007-06-25

As you will gather from the title, "Hollywood and History" is essentially a review of the costumes worn in the great (and not-so-great) historical epics produced in Hollywood's salad days, with a side trip to look at the costumes of science-fiction films. Lots of interesting stuff here (such as a chart showing how men's and women's "looks" in hairstyling, makeup, and the like changed decade by decade), and the photos and illustrations, both color and in B&W, are first-rate. My only real quibble - and this is something that's basically out of the control of the authors, as this book was published to accompany a museum exhibit from some years ago - is that the book doesn't cover more modern movies. As I said, though, that's not really something the authors can go back and fix at this point, and if you keep that in mind, you'll enjoy this book. Recommended for any film costume student's library.

4 out of 5 stars The movies got it wrong..........2000-10-07

This is a beautiful exhibition catalogue that shows how movies depict historical and SF costume. It is full of beatiful illustrations from the movies being discussed and also has examples of the actual costume worn in that movie.

What is very interesting is in the historical sections. You can clearly see how *wrong* these costumes are. Superfically they look right - but that's about it. Even 'gone with the wind' has it's problems.

There is also a section on SF movies and how the costuming in those are affected by what people are wearing at the time they are made. Out of this section the movies that seem to have stood the test of time the best are 'bladerunner' and 'flash gordon 1980'.

This is a very interesting book for people who are interested in the movies and costume.

                    3 out of 5 stars A Note on Cybermancy.......2003-10-26

This book condolidates the information in Shadowtech and Cybertechnology as well as adding some new stuff. However, I feel the section on cybermancy needs some discussion. When I first read about cybermancy in the Cybertechnology sourcebook I felt that the book did an excellent job of making cybermancy sound creepy, dark, and dangerous. Which it should because a cybermantically treated character will have to do lot of role playing to do their character credit. While Man and Machine has all the game rules necessary to use cybermancy I reccomend you take a look back at Cybertechnolgy to get a "feel" for the practice if you intend to use it in your games.

4 out of 5 stars Essential for anybody who doesn't play a mage..........2001-11-14

                    ...and some that do.

Man & Machine is the "tech" book for Shadowrun, Third Edition (SR3). It replaces Shadowtech and Cybertechnology, and collects all the myriad bits of cyberware, bioware, and chemicals into one easy-to-use volume. There is no Shadowtalk, as this is, primarily, a rulebook.

What's in? There are extensive discussions on cyberware and bioware, including a revised way of combining the two that reduces the interaction considerably. While I'm not entirely happy with that, I can see the reasoning behind it. An entire new category of equipment, nanoware, is included. It's not the all-powerful nanotech of transhuman science fiction, but it's at an appropriate usefulness for a technology still in its infancy.

We also have chapters on chemistry and pharmaceuticals, from thermite and fuel-air explosives to new cocaine derivatives. There are also rules for cybermancy, and a brand-new section on medicine, surgery, and healing for the game.

What's good? Actually, the single best thing about the book is the chart detailing EVERY SINGLE PIECE of personal enhancement in the game. It's almost like the nigh-deity-like chart from Fields of Fire. The contents are uniformly of fairly high quality, and it's very useful. It re-introduces bioware (which skipped SR2 entirely, save from using Shadowtech), and adds decent other material and rules, which are always good if they're filling a hole (as they are here).

What's bad? Not much, really. Just little individual bits...like the fact that cyberlimbs are, by and large, useless. I have to agree with a previous reviewer that having a lot of marginally useful cyberware isn't very good. The major part is revealed in the designers' notes...where they discuss what they decided caused Essence loss...and then proceeded to ignore it for a lot of items. Their definition was nervous system interaction...which is all well and good, but bone lacing and peg legs have no nervous interaction whatsoever, and therefore should not cost Essence...at all. And, I'm still a tad peeved that almost all of my SR2 characters would go into massive system shock and die upon conversion.

All in all, though, it's still a good book, and nigh-essential for anybody playing a Shadowrun game.

4 out of 5 stars good, shadowtech was better.......2000-08-14

the new rules for cyberlimbs (and torsos and skulls) and the bioware clarifications gives that fourth star but the new stress rules are bit too sluggish and well, a bit stupid at some points (stress on intelligence and willpower?) the new nanoware is quite nice but you need too much gizmos to keep it working the new cybermancy rules and preview are very enlightning about what cybermancy really means and how it works the new chemistry stuff is also nice but as usaul the really effective compounds is impossible to get your hands on

-too many useless and only because its "cool" gear(eye guns cyberfangs cyberhorns cyberguns balance tails etc.) and too many stuff they just put there so you will have somthing to drool on-

4 out of 5 stars worth every penny.......2000-07-27

This book has everything you need for streetsams and any other character who wants some cyberware, even if the players and game master don't use or have much cyberware this book will come in handy. take it from me this book is worth it if your play shadowrun on a semi-regular basis or more.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all..........2000-05-25

I really like this book and since I've read both the english an the german version I must say I prefer the german one. This is mostly because the german translators included shadowtalk in it (and real fun stuff by the way). What I don't like is the shock rules. I think it's overpowered. This book is definately worth a buy for all those cyber- and bioware junkies out there. Quite some new stuff and mostly really cool.

                      Product Description

Afternoon tea is one of the fastest-growing trends in America. Hotels, country inns, and tearooms are reviving this most relaxing repast. The customs and courtesies associated with serving tea are new to many Americans eager to use tea as an alternative to the business lunch or dinner, or as a special event. This book, written by one of America s foremost authorities on etiquette and protocol, is a fanciful, but correct, guide to the pleasures of tea at home and for business purposes. Etiquette is the tapestry woven throughout this delightful book which aims to inform and amuse the novice and the connoisseur. Step-by-step guidelines include the history and legends of tea, hosting an afternoon tea at home, brewing the perfect pot of tea and serving it with aplomb, going out to tea in tearooms, restaurants and hotels, a complete guide to being a great host or guest during this pleasant alternative to the business lunch or dinner.

5 out of 5 stars Tea and Etiquette by Johnson.......2007-05-09

This is a wonderful little book. If you enjoy "all things tea" then this is the book for you. Easily read, with details about proper etiquette for every type of social and business situation. It truly would be a nicer world if people (including children) were more often taught these things. Mrs. Johnson intersperses the chapters with interesting personal stories and recipes. I highly recommend it.

I bought this book because I was never a tea drinker, but always felt left out as the popularity of now drinking tea started. I knew nothing about different types, how to serve it, what to serve with it, and just the simple things everyone knows. This book helped me with all of that and now I even like tea. After a few hours of reading, I know more about tea etiquette than anyone I know.

I am starting a small catering business doing tea parties! This book is perfect! It has everything you always wanted to know about preparing, enjoying and serving tea. From the different types of tea from Cream Tea to High Tea and what to do with the tea bag after you've taken it out of your tea cup. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to serve and to enjoy a proper afternoon of tea. Thank you for being so thorough.

I find this book very useful and informative. The author presents the material in a concise and down to earth manner. The etiquette portion of this book contains do's and do not's that leaves no questions. The tone of the book is conversational just like the topic it explains. If you are thinking about having a tea party for the first time or attending to one, this book is a must read!
