Book Description

Early in 1937, a young film editor went on-location to St. George, Utah, for the filming of Republic's The Painted Stallion. Rain and cast problems put the production hopelessly behind schedule. The studio summarily fired the director and replaced him with the film editor. Thus was born the career of one of Hollywood's most famous serial directors, Bill Witney.

Witney went on to direct or codirect 23 Republic serials, working with such stars as William Benedict, Hoot Gibson, Bela Lugosi, and Noah Beery, Sr. Witney's output included some of the most famous cliffhangers of the era, such as Adventures of Red Ryder, Spy Smasher, Drums of Fu Manchu, The Lone Ranger, and The Lone Ranger Rides Again. Though he enjoyed a long career as a feature film and television director, it is the Republic serials for which he is best remembered. This engaging story is a behind-the-scenes look at the heyday of the Hollywood cliffhanger, the making of the movies, and the people involved in them.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Remains A Cliff-Hanger ..........2002-08-31

This book is, indeed, a dandy for the old Saturday afternoon movie "serial" buffs. Mr. Witney certainly captures the atmosphere of Republic Pictures, home of the best-of-the-bunch when the studio was producing top of the line westerns and serials dating back to the '30s. (Republic also produced some outstanding non-western features, including "The Quiet Man", directed by John Ford, starring John Wayne.)

The book leaves bits still "hanging to the cliff". More focus could have been placed on the stars and off-screen activity that took place while filming those old screen gems. Also noticeable is Mr. Witney ignoring Roy Barcroft, the only actor specializing in "bad guy" roles ever to be signed to a ten-year movie contract ... and it was with Republic.

Although chapters are headlined for special serials, such as "The Lone Ranger", not enough detail to the subject is submitted, leaving true devotees of these old "goodies" wanting more.

William Witney died this year (March, 2002). He is an auteur
without ever being called such by critics who traffic in such
terms; he is an innovator whose influence is still felt today;
he represents a time and place when cinema was simply "a movie" and man oh man, did he know how to make a movie move. Would that all films today had the polish, pace and professionalism of a William Witney serial! This autobio is primary information from one of the innovators of kinetic film.

4 out of 5 stars Accessible Mahler.......2000-07-14

Das Lied von der Erde typifies Mahler's genius; a genius for transposing the Wagnerian/Jungian preoccupation with mankind's myths from the Operatic stage to Symphony hall. Taken from a series of Chinese poetic meditations on man's relationship to the earth, Das Lied von der Erde is a deeply contemplative work for a large orchestra and three singers: a Soprano, a Tenor, and a Baritone. Like most Dover scores, Das Lied von der Erde is a treasure. Reprinted from an original edition, it includes a translation of all frontismatter from that edition, as well as a small glossary of German musical terms used in the score. The paper is acid free, and the binding is high quality, so this thing is going to last for a while. Also, the book itself and the printing are large enough that, contrary to complaints I've heard regarding other Dover Mahler scores, you could conduct from it. Finally, all Dover scores are so moderately priced that any devoted Mahler fan simply will not be able to resist this Das Lied von der Erde.

    Book Description

Since its premiere Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) has been widely regarded as his finest masterpiece. It was written in the wake of personal events that shook the foundations of his life in 1907 and, like all his earlier works, it is deeply influenced by the composer's individual and philosophical worldview. Stephen Hefling provides a background to this symphony for voice and orchestra, describes its genesis, summarizes reviews of the premiere, and gives a careful account of all six movements.

                    Book Description

Ideal for those wanting to understand the basics of the Nimzo-Indian. The Nimzo-Indian is one of the soundest and most popular defenses against 1 d4, offering Black the chance to unbalance the game early on and play for a win without undue risk. Advocates include virtually all of the world's top players, including Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Vishy Anand and Anatoly Karpov. In this revolutionary book, Grandmaster Chris Ward revisits the basic principles behind the Nimzo-Indian and its many variations. Throughout this easy-to-read guide the reader is helped along by a wealth of notes, tips and warnings from the author, while key strategies, ideas and tactics for both sides are clearly illustrated. (7 x 9 1/2, 176 pages, diagrams)

                    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A solid intro book, but not comprehensive or unique........2005-07-31

The Nimzo-Indian can be played in conservative solid fashion or in a more aggressive, unbalancing manner in which black plays for the win early in the middlegame. This book is designed to introduce the basic ideas, themes, and philosophy of the Nimzo. It is not loaded with the latest theory nor will it help titled players learn something they didn't already know.
However, this book really is a nice way to 'start out' in one of the best defenses against 1.d4 and is obviously critical for white players who play 1.d4/ 2.c4/ 3.Nc3. Chris Ward has a lifetime's experience with this opening and it shows. He is also a fairly entertaining writer, which is more than more chess authors can say for themselves.
Although, the book doesn't run 'deep' (nor does it claim to) it does present all the pertinent variations within the Nimzo so that you can choose which lines you want to play or research further.
This book will not be enough for strong club players to just hit the ground running. You will still (of course) need to check open resources like ECO, NCO, or the TWIC for modern theory of whichever lines strike your fancy. If you are already 1800+, then look elsewhere for you Nimzo knowledge. This book is really meant for lower rated players.

As a side note, the Sherbakov-Jakovenko game is not tactically flawed as a previous reviewer mentioned. If he had tried to play the lines with Fritz analysizing for more than a minute he would find that Grandmasters might know a bit more than some people give them credit for. The ideas involving a quick b4 in that game look winning for white at first but then the computer (and strong GM's like Onischuk and Gurevich)realize black gets the material back since the knight on a8 isn't going anywhere. Also, since black ends up with 2 queenside connected passers in the coming endgame. More than compensating and in fact, forcing play to take a perpetual to avoid getting burned. A very playable line for black.

4 out of 5 stars Watch out for errors!.......2004-06-12

Like most chess books, you need to keep an eye out for errors. Chris Ward actually highlights a special warning - "don't trust the analysis in chess books, even this one!"

This warning is appropriate as there are some absolute pearlers in this book. The problem is that although you could expect mistakes in the middlegame analysis of an opening book, one would think mistakes would be kept to a minimum in the opening play.

Take a look for example at the game Sherbakov-Jakovenko on page 55. I've checked the move order independently and what I find is absolutely stunning - several serious errors in the opening dozen or so moves that Chris completely misses or worse, recommends not knowing that they comprise major blunders. I'm not talking deep positional errors - just silly patzer moves that fall to 1-2 move combinations. Having looked at the game quite closely, I was also stunned that 2 reasonably strong GMs could play repeatedly bad moves simultaneously so that they neutralised each other!

So if you are a beginning player or beginning practising the Nimzo Indian defence, make sure you have some trusty chess software to double check the analysis as you play through the games.

It's a shame Chris didn't take this simple step for us...

Setting this problem aside, the book is still valuable for beginning players and is simply set out with the basic ideas explained. For a better example of this type of book, try John Shaw's "Starting Out - Ruy Lopez"

5 out of 5 stars Uses carefully worded text and easy-to-follow diagrams.......2002-10-10

Starting Out: The Nimzo-Indian by chess grandmaster Chris Ward is an extensive instructional manual describing the uses and advantages of the Nimzo-Indian and its variations in chess. The Nimzo-Indian tactic is an excellent defense against 1 d4, allowing Black the chance to play for a win at minimal risk. A very highly recommended addition to any personal chess library, Starting Out: The Nimzo-Indian uses carefully worded text and easy-to-follow diagrams to train both novice chess players and experienced long-term players alike in this practical, fascinating technique.

5 out of 5 stars Great help for Schedule C and 8829.......2007-01-12

I'm working on my schedule C and 8829 and every so often I get to a question I don't understand. I go to the IRS instructions and their web site and it's as clear as used motor oil. It's enough to drive you insane.

Picked up this book and it's spelled out in plain English. No need to read a passage five times to understand.

As others have stated, you need this BEFORE you start your business and you need it a year before you do your taxes. In other words, it will help you along with your 2006 return and you can learn from it on how to do a better job for 2007 by keeping the right documents and receipts in order to get even bigger legitimate deductions. I know I wish I'd had this book last year!

With that said, this is not a line-by-line assistant for Schedule C and the 8829 which I wish it was at times. There are just times when the IRS uses a specific term on a specific line and it would help to have a layman's definition at hand. I didn't get that with this book. Nonetheless, it's been one of the best sources of information I've found for doing one's self employment tax forms.

                      4 out of 5 stars Good.......2006-12-17

If you're in business for yourself, you better buy this book. It wasn't as complete as I thought it should be. But I did learn that I was not taking all the deductions that I could. So it more than paid for itself.

5 out of 5 stars The Written Rules and the Real Rules in Plain English.......2005-11-08

This book starts off with a very good description of what this book is all about: John and Jane both gross $50,000 a year. John gets $40,000 after taxes, Jane gets $45,000. The difference - John works for someone and goes into work. Jane works at home and gets to deduct her home office expenses.

The IRS allows you to deduct your expenses of maintaining a home office. At the same time, the IRS rules are fairly comples, and home office expenses are often overstated or subject to outright fraud. So the IRS tends to look at them fairly carefully, they have been known to come to your house to see what your office looks like.

This book, updated to be current for 2006, explains the rules as written down, the rules as actually followed and gives you some tips as to what you should, shouldn't, must, and mustn't do. Beyond the official rules, which are messy enough, there are more or less unknown rules, i.e. computer software that you buy is written off one way (well actually two or three ways), software you create, either for yourself or for sale, is handled quite differently.

This book is well written, simple to read and up to date with current law.
