Book Description

Ida Lupino (1918-1995) was more than a gorgeous image of film noir in the forties and fifties who starred in classics such as They Drive By Night, High Sierra, and Road House. Lupino also evolved into one of Hollywood's earliest female directors whose work was described by Martin Scorsese as "resilient, with a remarkable empathy for the fragile and heartbroken." William Donati chronicles the dramatic life of one of Hollywood's most prolific, substantive, and innovative artists, both behind and in front of the camera.

3 out of 5 stars Reasonable overview, many open questions.......2004-11-21

Donati has written a respectful and seemingly accurate portrait of Ida Lupino as star, director and woman. A reader looking for basic biographical data on a deeper-than-encylopedia level will find what they are looking for with this book.

Donati, unfortunately, writes with a noticeable lack of flair and manages to nearly make Lupino boring. This is no mean feat, given how colorful and important she was. He does not place her films into a critical or historical context. Nor does he really explore her character on anything more than a surface psychological level. Furthermore, in his focus on her romantic life, he overlooks or skips over other important relationships that she had with other women. The most obvious omission is her adult relationship with her daughter.

Useful for class assignments, but other readers may want to wait for a better treatment.

3 out of 5 stars Ok on Facts of Life --Little Film Analysis and Commentary.......2001-07-28

The author is good at setting out the basic facts of Lupino's life. He writes clearly and is basically engaging. However, after having read the book, I don't feel I know Lupino well--personnally or as an artist.

As an artist--how did she view her acting roles? How was her personality expressed in the films she directed? Why did she make The Hitch Hiker, for example? Or, what was her sense of her contribution to film? In short--there is just about zero description of her work and no integration of film anaylsis and commentary into the biography.

About her personal life, we are told about her turbulanet relationships with no explantion as to why a powerful woman would put up with the seemingly abusive Howard Duff as a husband. There is one paragraph in the last chapter where the author speculates that Lupino had a borderline personality disorder. This perspective came through dimly as he worte, but I would have appreciated a more consistant and deeper exploration of her personality.

Unfortunately, I ended up having less respect for Lupino after reading the book than before, in large part, I believe, because the author refuses to place Lupino in an artisitc or psychological context.

5 out of 5 stars a look at Hollywood's forgotten queen, Ida Lupino.......2000-11-19

William Donati's book, Ida Lupino, a biography, was very interesting and well written. Some of the data is in line with the A and E biography, but some is not. I have to agree with just one of the other reviewers in the fact that very little is said about Ms. Lupino's daughter, Bridget Duff as a grown woman. It came out very strongly that Ms.Lupino had a never ending concern about what her father thought. Ms. Lupino's roles on the screen were that of woman who, while flawed, were very interesting. One could not help to think about what would have happened if she was given better roles. Her constant feuds with Warner Bros. and many suspensions for not accepting lousy parts were outlined in the book. Another thing that the book does not go into is, why after 60 plus movies as an actress, 6 as a directors and 100+ as a TV director, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and sciences and the Emmy Awards has completely overlooked Lupino. Overall, I liked the book very much.

5 out of 5 stars An in-depth look at Hollywoodýs first female director........2000-02-13

This book provides a concise and in-depth investigation on what drove Ida Lupino, not only as an actress but to become Hollywood's first female director. Starting off with a background look at the Lupino family the author, William Donati, gives us at the foundation upon which Ida was driven to carry on in the family business, and would eventually lead her to Hollywood. Here we are given a real life look at what actors had to endure during the studios contract days, in which they controlled not only the lives of their stars, but their careers as well. We learn of the battles Ida had to put up with, both artistically and physically, and how the glamorous life of a star could be anything but. This treatment would eventually lead her to split from the studios and strike out on her own, as an independent. Here we learn of her first foray into directing, and the constant struggle to finance and put out quality films. This is paralleled with the conflict between her career and personal life, as we are given a clear glimpse at her failed marriages, and her battle with herself. The author gives us a real fans eye look at this great actress come director. Truly a must book for any fan of Hollywood's golden age.

Book Description

No delicate ingénues, these. In the middle of the twentieth century, the Mary Pickfords of the movie world were replaced by a different sort of woman—drop-dead gorgeous, witty, not afraid to speak their minds, they could slay you with a look—and if that didn't work, look out for the pistol in the garter. These ground-breaking actresses helped change the course of movie history, charting a path for generations to come.

These profiles of fifteen leading ladies—Lucille Ball, Lynn Bari, Joan Blondell, Ann Dvorak, Gloria Grahame, Jean Hagen, Adele Jergens, Ida Lupino, Marilyn Maxwell, Mercedes McCambridge, Jane Russell, Ann Sheridan, Barbara Stanwyck, Claire Trevor and Marie Windsor—include overviews of their lives and careers, and excerpts from interviews. Five photos supplement each profile. Jane Russell (one of the actresses profiled) provides a foreword.

4 out of 5 stars Costly Tomatoes.......2007-03-08

This is an excellent book on the tough women character actors of the 1940s through 1970s. It's an interesting book to read and the illustrations are good, but I don't see paying $35 for a paperback book like this. I would not do that again, although I understand that small publishing companies have to make a profit.

4 out of 5 stars Good choice for black-and-white movie buffs.......2006-05-02

A quick and enjoyable read, this book provides brief essays on 15 actresses who enjoyed varying degrees of success and fame in Hollywood. The authors' affection for their subjects comes through clearly, and readers will be tempted to seek out the movies described.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent .......2006-03-04

In the style of James Robert Parish, this volume provides interesting essays on 15 stars. A few, like Barbara Stanwyck, have been subjects of other volumes but others like Ann Dvorak and Marie Windsor are much rarer subjects.

Each essay combines details of each star's career with their personal life in reasonable detail for the level at which the volume is pitched. The personality of every lady is evident. There are some great photos too. Some of the ladies were still alive when the volume was published so the book benefits from direct quotes whenever possible. The gem is the transcript of a lengthy interview with Ann Sheridan.

Of its type, this book is as good as any others.

1 out of 5 stars Just not worth it.......2006-01-10

There seems to be a lot of differing opinions here but I have to agree with the all the reviewers below who said it was boring and not worth the price. It is a flimsy paperback with poor quality photos. I know McFarland is a tiny publishing house but when you spend almost $40 you expect a little more.

5 out of 5 stars Read the Book!.......2006-01-04

I've had just about enough of Amazon becoming a forum for grievances --- and "Dan Dan"'s so-called review did it! The bad reviews of "Killer Tomatoes" here on Amazon are based solely on Laura Wagner's negative reviews in "Classic Images." Never mind that she's good at reviewing books and she's always fair - friends of the authors she pans are taking revenge by writing lies about her book.

Dan Dan's only other review on Amazon is E. J. Fleming's "The Fixers," which Miss Wagner gave a deserved bad review to in CI. Hey, Dan Dan, how's your friend E.J.? You can tell him that you wrote that review and everyone is marveling at it.

First off, Dan Dan NEVER read the book. "Its bad enough when 'writers' rewrite stories with nothing new to add. There is absolutely nothing new in any of these stories." If you read the book, Dan Dan, you would see that the writers interviewed not only some of their subjects, but also people close to them. Are you telling me that Jean Hagen's tragic story has been told before? Ann Dvorak's? That first-hand interviews are "nothing new"?

"Its worse when important parts of the stories are left out." What, the sex lives of the women? Gay RUMORS?

Jane Russell's foreword was nice, not rambling. Ray Hagen, within the book, interviewed her at length - and there was nothing wrong with her memory. If you have to pick on a foreword, for crying out loud, you are really stretching it.

Another so-called reviewer here complained about the title, like that's basis for panning a book (stretching, stretching, stretching). Does that person see the title's cleverness? It's a play on words. Get the joke! This same reviewer, before Miss Wagner panned E. J. Fleming's books, loved and raved about "Killer Tomatoes" on her Yahoo Group and website. I saw it with my own eyes. Now, of course, she's singing another tune.

Still another complained that the subjects were B movie actress. This sounds like a dig to Miss Wagner, who said in a recent review (not maliciously) that Carole Landis (a book also by Fleming) was a B movie actress. Barbara Stanwyck, Jane Russell, Ida Lupino, Gloria Grahame, and Ann Sheridan were NOT B movie actresses, folks. Lucille Ball started in the Bs, but she's a superstar now. Mercedes McCambridge is an Oscar winning actress.

And how about this: "The gals are all portrayed as saints and victims and you are only given a glimpse into their private lives. I would have like to have learned a lot more about who they dated, who they hated, who was addicted to what!" Um, another "reviewer" who didn't read the book? The authors candidly talk about Jean Hagen's and Jane Russell's alcoholism and Marilyn Maxwell's affairs. I guess because this isn't a lowbrow gossip book, these reviewers - who champion books like "The Fixers" - have a problem with authors who are trying to tell a real story that isn't based solely on sex lives.

The photo crack is ridiculous. Like most McFarland books, the pictures are clear and look good. Grainy? Get better glasses.

So, I say, stop using Amazon to air your dirty laundry. These reviewers haven't read the book and can't honestly review it. The CI reviews are fair and Miss Wagner shouldn't have to be subjected to people who can't handle it when she points out their misinformation. She actually gives more good reviews than bad, it's just the bad ones that attract the nuts.

(By the way, I do not personally know Miss Wagner or Mr. Hagen, but I read "Classic Images" regularly. I also love this book.)

        Book Description

Although Ida Lupino is best known as a leading actress in many Hollywood B movies, her work as a filmmaker has been neglected by critics, historians, and audiences. In the late 1940s, Lupino turned writer, producer, and director in her own independent production company. The films she made, beginning with Not Wanted in 1949, were low-budget pictures taking an uncompromising approach to controversial subject matter -- unmarried motherhood, disability, rape, bigamy. Lupino is exceptional as the only woman to have directed a visible body of films in the male-dominated Hollywood of the 1950s. The continuation of that directorial career in television throughout the 1960s strengthens the claim that Lupino is the most prolific and creatively powerful woman director ever to have worked in the moving image industry. This book is the first extensive critical study of Ida Lupino's work as a director in both film and television. It features in-depth essays on each of the films she directed and on her work in television (including such popular series as The Fugitive and The Twilight Zone), with the most complete credit listing yet published of her television work. Viewing Lupino's oeuvre in historical, social, industrial, and aesthetic contexts, all the contributors demonstrate that the work repays informed and sensitive readings and many consider it in light of contemporary feminist debates on cinema. Queen of the `B's is a long overdue reassessment of an important and pioneering director.

          Book Description

(Foreword, by Lorin Hollander, concert pianist)

Eloise Ristad deals here with complex problems which torment and cripple so many of our most creative and talented people, and she does so with compassion, wisdom, and wit. The problem of stage fright, for instance, is a suffering of epidemic proportions in our society, and involves modalities of thought and projections that rob spontaneity and enthusiasm in artistic performance.

Those interested in creative education have long felt that an entirely new, holistic and nurturing process of allowing individuals to discover and express themselves is needed if our educational system is to avoid the neuroses and creative blocks of the past generation. This book illuminates through its conversational style the destructive inhibitions, fears, and guilt experienced by all of us as we fail to break through to creativity. This story is told to me day after day in conservatories and college campuses around the world. Indeed I felt at times that she was telling of my own most petty and debilitating fears.

But what is important, A Soprano on Her Head supplies answers and methods for overcoming these universal psychological blocks--methods that have not only been proven in her own studio, but which trace back through history to the oldest and wisest systems of understanding the integration of mind and body. The work bears scrutiny both scientifically and holistically.

This is a wonderful book. Read it. You are not alone.

          5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book.......2007-08-22

I bought this book because of the wonderful things everyone was saying about it. I am a music major, and being one, I have had many struggles. When you want to study music, no one doubts that you love it. A person has to become it. The struggle of learning the right techniques and harder and harder music is enough to make anyone forget why they loved music in the first place. This book is helping me to let the music flow, and use all of this knowledge that I have learned in college. I beleive that any one who has struggled with themsleves and their music should read this book. It is a beautiful part of any library, and should be read by any and all who come across it.

5 out of 5 stars Writers need this book.......2007-07-13

Just as DRAWING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN is more than a book about drawing, so A SOPRANO ON HER HEAD is one of those life-enhancing books from which anyone can benefit. I plan to put this on the Suggested Reading list I hand out at my writing classes.

"In any art there must be movement . . ." she quotes Chaim Nahor, an Israeli painter. Ristad argues quite convincingly that in order to be truly touched by art in any form, we must be _moved_.

Brian Corrigan, one of my favorite fellow novelists, has said that he has a single word posted at the top of his computer monitor. It says "LINGER." Ristad shows us how to linger with every moving moment, and how, as artists in any medium, we can bring forth those moments from the deep well of creativity. We can dance ourselves onto the canvas, the printed page, the composition.

All life, in one form or another, is art. I suggest that we all use A SOPRANO ON HER HEAD to help us paint our lives more brilliantly. I refer to this book often as I'm writing my cat mysteries, and show it to people whose books I edit. This is a book that gives great value for the price and for the time spent reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful to all practicing musicians.......2007-01-03

Ms. Ristad has written a book that feels just like she knew me. It's refreshing to hear that we all have many of the same issues about confidence, performance anxiety and classical music in general. She has a nice way of discussing these issues in a way that values them while pointing out just how absurd the conservatory-style music education system really is. Soprano is a must-read, no matter what your instrument.

5 out of 5 stars Tough to put down.......2004-04-04

The first chapter of this book was a reading assignment for my voice pedagogy class. I wasn't completely sold by the title (or the cover), but I was instantly hooked once I started reading. This book will be loved by all musicians as well as anyone engaged in any sort of practice. Through her exciting and light approach to dealing with "serious problems," Ristad shows us that our harshest critics are those "judges" within us, those inner voices to which we currently worship. When we are willing to put those voices aside momentarily and give ourselves permission to try, to experiment, even to fail once in a while, we actually give ourself permission to grow and excel. An inspiring message to all.

4 out of 5 stars Quirky but worthwhile.......2003-10-02

The author suggests unconventional ways of dealing with musician's nagging problems, such as, self doubt or technical plateaus. Her approach and ideas are a bit quirky but useful. She challenges musicians to step outside the conventional pedagogy box to explore solutions in fresh ways. Hidden under this new way of addressing problems is the feeling of empowerment musicans will gain if they listen to her advice.

2 out of 5 stars Can be fascinating if you are susceptible.......2005-04-24

This book is pretty much a lot of new-agey nonsense. I enjoyed it, however, when I came across it in my college years. You know, the time of suffering from the usual teenage angst and occasional tipsiness.
I give it two stars for providing a pleasant read for the time when you feel that "there must be more to this (life, world, universe, your personal importance therein.... )" but are too drunk/stoned to figure it out for yourself.

Should be read with a gallon of cheap chardonney on hand.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best reference books ever written..........2004-06-03

The least i could say about this wondrous book is that it's the closest you'll come to a mind-altering experience without chemical substances. From that on, this is a jaw-dropping read, and it's kinda difficult to summarise what it professes except if i put it on terms such as: "it examines all those sides of 'reality' for which we have solid evidence of the existence thereof but because of a variety of reasons we refuse to acknowledge".

Now, I know this sounds vague, but when you come across a book that deals with such a spectrum of topics such as alchemy, politics, the paranormal, history, secret societies, origins of certain philosophies, magic, the roots of nazism, UFOs, conspiracies, etc, there is no simpler way to surmise it.

This is easily one of those books that leave you a different person once you're done reading them, not in the way certain "self-help" books claim they do, but in the sense that it works like a massive curtain being pulled infront of you and a whole new picture being revealed behind it.

There's no bibliography included at the end of it (allthough, through its pages, several books are mentioned as sources) but for those well-delved into the topics it discusses it's obvious that the scholarship involved here is impeccable.

And apropos "sources", this is exactly the biggest contribution of this book, the fact that it actually functions like a tremendous reference book, leading you eventually to other books of which you'd probably remain unaware had you not seen the sourcing here. It's more or less like a simply coded lexicon for those interested in diving well below the surface, for restless minds who suspect that "this can't be all there is", a multi-key to unopened doors inside and outside ourminds.

Being all that (and more), you'd expect a "heavy read", a book written in wooden academic language, but this is far from being the case: " The Morning of the Magicians" is laid out in down-to-earth language and you won't be disturbed during your reading by trying to comprehend the sentences but instead you'll be left with the bare essence. You'll need only comprehend the concepts.

Published originally in the 60s, and having accomplished a notorious reputation since then, it reads like what Charles Fort would sound as, if he were a scientist. And, even that description doesn't do it complete justice.
Absolutely essential for those who search...

                  1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2003-06-14

This book is such a complete piece of antiscientific, ocultist nonsense that its continuing popularity in a highly educated country like France is really hard to explain. Only for those interested in cultural oddities from the 60's.

4 out of 5 stars "That Infinity Called Man...".......2003-06-07

This is a manifesto calling for a new conception of humanity's place in the universe. If that sounds pretty grand, well, this book appeared in the sixties... The French authors, columnist Louis Pauwels and physicist Jacques Bergier, feel that "Cartesian reason does not cover the whole of man or the whole of his knowledge" and are calling for an optimistic, mystical philosophy of modernism that they call Fantastic Realism.

This is one of my favorite books, and is the progenitor for most of the "New Age" literature that was to appear decades later, from the 1970's through the '90's. The authors (Pauwels, really) assert that homo sapiens is not a mechanistic clock-work operating within the limits of Nature, but is instead on a journey of progressive evolution towards cosmic interconnectedness. A key assertion is that it is possible to understand the most complex aspects of reality through an expanded state of awareness, without plodding through the limited and sometimes inaccurate scientific method.

The book presents a great deal of esoterica, which often obfuscates the authors' intention, which is to call for "Reason ... pushed to extreme limits ... operating on a higher level, linking up with the mysteries of the mind and spirit, the secrets of energy and universal harmony."

It's easy to confuse this book with compilations of the occult or unexplained, like "Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World" or "Ripley's Believe It Or Not". Actually, like Colin Wilson's "The Occult", "Le Matin des Magiciens" is speculatively considering such ideas with the aim of inspiring the reader to question reductionist theories of reality. The book is non-clerical but spiritual call to embrace modernism, and all the possibilities it represents, rather than reject it.

5 out of 5 stars Hearken! - A New Dawn. (The Rise of the Superman).......2001-04-13

Reality is not only stranger than we suppose but stranger than we can suppose. -J. B. S. Haldane

Quit thy childhood, my friend, and wake up! -Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Absolutely mind-expanding! In this book, the authors expound a thesis of "fantastic realism" and explore the mind, not in the subconscious or conscious states but in what they believe to be ultraconsciousness. The book is able to cover virtually every topic from atomic energy, to secret societies of alchemists, to the influence of the occult upon Hitler, to parapsychology and consciousness, and finally to the upcoming superman - a mutant capable of astounding intellectual feats. The authors cite numerous previous explorers: Rene Guenon, Teilhard de Chardin, Carl Jung, Charles Fort, Gurdjieff, and the work of mathematicians, especially Cantor's theory of the transfinite. Bizarre theories are considered: Horbiger's theory of "eternal ice" (and it's influence on Hitler), Teed's theory that we live on the concave inner surface of a hollow earth, theories to explain the origins of civilization, the work of the alchemists and their possible knowledge of atomic physics, theories regarding mutation of the human species, and theories propounding alternative origins for life on this planet. The authors are able to consider all of this and put it together in a coherent whole, under the idea of "fantastic realism". They dare to ask such questions as: Are we all in a collective conspiracy to hide the truth, is science such a conspiracy? Do secret societies exist and do they have an influence upon history? What special knowledge did the ancients possess that we may not possess now? What role did secret societies play in the origins of Nazism, and in the Nazi Black Order? How were the Nazis able to rise to power and what did such a phenomenon represent amidst our modern world? What is the historical meaning of the atomic bomb? What does the future promise for our civilization? And, Do supermen live amongst us men, and if so, have they always? Hypotheses are put forth in answer to all these questions. The authors reject a magical worldview and they also reject the narrow confines of scientific positivism. However, they consider it necessary to keep an open mind when examining these phenomena, and they refer to themselves as "barbarians" seeking to search out a scientific explanation to be imposed on the fantastic. The book is simply amazing, and truly life-affirming. You MUST read it! Not just to understand yourself and your world, but also to understand your future. You will never be able to perceive things in the exact same light again. Get this book and discover the mysteries of the world for yourself! :)

Two asinine brains got together and wrote fiction of the most sinister kind. The problem is they have faint ideas of historical facts, so they are using a blossoming phantasy. The book is filled with dark energy, and they mock the intelligence of the reader. I combed through the pages, and tried other pages, always the same. Anybody can write a book like this, drink a few glasses of wine and start fabricating. They have a sickening fascination with the third Reich, with Tibet, with Haushofer, void of facts. Their sickening fascination with everything hellish knows no boundaries.

4 out of 5 stars Very good info, a little repetitive.......2007-04-28

It's a small book (compared to Murphy's classic, Tech. Anal. of the Fin. Mrkts., which is a very good starter book of technical analysis). It has good info in it. The newer verions of his classic covers much of the same info, but this one goes into more depth. Murphy is easy to read. But the book seemed rather repetitive. Murphy should have spent some time telling us how to get all the comparative info at the best price. Then the book would more useful.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny By A Factor Of 10.......2007-01-15

Probably the most bizarre thing about the stock market is it's explosive rallies and catastrophic crashes. Both occur with little warning and seemingly with little reason, but by studying intermarket analysis you quickly learn the relationship between currency trends, commodity prices, bond yields and their strong influence on the bond and stock markets. This book is one that every serious investor should own.

                                  Dear All,
Intermarket Analysis is good and comprehensive book. For a trader its treat to have this book.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ANY SERIOUS INVESTOR/TRADER.......2006-08-13

Are you still trading with a narrow vision? We live in a world beyond our imagination. The impact of the Asian markets on the US, relationship between crude oil and transports, impact of Taiwanese semi-conductors on the $SOX, etc... All these are crucial information that can help anticipate market direction. I highly recommend this book to any serious investor/trader.
