Book Description
One way to analyze the intensely conflicting feelings Americans hold toward the Vietnam War is to see how the war has been portrayed through film. How the War Was Remembered is the first book to analyze Vietnam War films, beginning with China Gate and ending with Hamburger Hill. Included are analyses of all the major films about the Vietnam War, including Green Berets, The Deerhunter, Apocalypse Now, The Killing Fields, Rambo, Platoon, and Full Metal Jacket, and others. Auster and Quart create a typology of these films based on their connection to sociohistorical currents such as the "Wounded Hero," "Superman," "Hunter/Hero," and "Survivor." They also combine aesthetic analysis with a social, cultural historical critique.

The Barbary Plague: The Black Death in Victorian San Francisco
ASIN: 0375410333

Book Description
On July 4, 1826, the United States celebrated its fiftieth birthday with parades and speeches across the country. But what ultimately sanctified the national jubilee in the minds of the celebrants was an extraordinary coincidence: the nearly simultaneous deaths of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, the last pillars of the original republic, already venerated as legends in their own time. It was a watershed in the nation's history, a bright moment when the successors to the Revolutionary dream examined their own lives as they took inspiration from and found nostalgia in the accomplishments of the founders.
In this fascinating book, the distinguished historian Andrew Burstein explores what it was to be an American in 1826. Drawing on private diaries and letters, daily newspapers, and long-buried publications, he shows us the personal lives behind the pageantry and reveals an acutely self-conscious nation–anxiously optimistic about its future, eager to romanticize the Revolutionary past.
We follow the Marquis de Lafayette, the only surviving general of the War of Independence, on his triumphant 1825 tour of all twenty-four states. We visit an Ohio boomtown on the edge of the "new West," a region influenced by the Erie Canal and the commercialism that canal culture brought with it. We see through the eyes of ordinary citizens–the wife of a Massachusetts minister, the author of a popular novel of the day, the family of a prominent statesman–and learn about their gritty understanding of life and death, the nuances of contemporary sexual politics, and the sometimes treacherous drama of public debate. And we meet headline-makers such as the ornery President John Quincy Adams, the controversial Secretary of State Henry Clay, and the notoriously hot-tempered General Andrew Jackson, struggling to act in a statesmanlike way as he waits to be swept into the White House.
In this evocative portrait of the United States in its jubilee year, Burstein shows how 1826 marked an unforgettable time in the republic's history, when a generation embraced the legacy of its predecessors and sought to enlarge its role in America's story.

Survey of 1820's American View of Revolution........2003-05-19
This is an interesting (mostly) survey of America's reaction to the passing of the Revolutionary generation around the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
The author focuses on 10 or so personalities great and small to paint a picture of how America reflected the glory and promise of the Revolution through nostalgia, politics, arts and letters.
We see LaFayette on his triumphant return tour to America as the last living connection to the military high command that won our freedom. This description I found fascinating as the old general visited the sons and daughters of his contemporaries (and a few remaining in their own right such as Adams and Jefferson).
Wiley Henry Clay, destiny's child Andrew Jackson and the unfortunate John Quincy Adams all make their appearance as they dominated the stage during the mid-1820's. America's canal boom is described, particularly as it crisscrossed Ohio, a state transformed as water highways joined New England, the Great Lakes economy and the lower Mississippi within its borders.
The quintessentially American drama of Jefferson and Adams expiring on the same day, the exact date of the 50th anniversary of the Declaration, and their famous correspondence is explored. Here the author is able to capture some of the magic and "smile of providence" that from time to time has seemed to settle on America. The effect of simultaneous death that these two brothers of independence (who were to leave that state of grace as fierce political enemies only to make up and join forces for to the benefit of posterity through their rediscovered admiration late in life) was great on our still young nation. The author recounts well the glow that settled on the nation upon discovering that Adams and Jefferson had been called back to their creator together on the anniversary of their great historical moment.
We also learn of the wife of a Massachusetts minister and the ambitious attorney general -- both authors of the time -- as they contemplate the glory of the revolution through popular writings.
This book is a survey -- disjointed and with a lot of background information not necessarily focused on the Year of Jubilee. Its strong points are the fascinating vignettes like Lafayette's tour, the Jefferson-Adams passing and President J.Q. Adams's troubled administration. Weaker, in my opinion, were digression and dissections of the romantic writing of the two authors. Our author dissected their work in a literary analysis that struck me as overdone and not in keeping with the flow of the rest of the book.
Perhaps this book would have been more accurately described as a snapshot of America as it approached its Jubilee rather than as the story of how America celebrated the event. As a survey it has many interesting chapters and the focus on a time immediately following the "Era of Good Feelings" gives some depth to a period often glossed over in other histories. Not bad, overall.
The first 50 years of Independence.......2001-07-11
Since we have just celebrated the 225th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, it seems only appropriate to read an account of how our nation celebrated it's 50th anniversary of the same. This is a well-written book that takes us through that exciting year, and along the way gives us a lot of history about John Quincy Adams and the contested election of 1824. We get mini biographies of many famous people, such as Adams, Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, and the like, but also people who may have been fairly well-known at that time, but now are not even remotely familiar to us. It was these "unknowns" that impressed me the most, and whom I found fascinating. It's always good to read a historical work that tells me something that I did not know before, and this work delivers that aspect very well. It rounds off my recent reading of the life of John Adams, and tells me how his son fared as President and beyond. This is a book well worth the time to read, and I recommend it.
Lost in the primary materials.......2001-07-05
Burstein has an interesting thesis, which he articulates clearly in his Introduction, but which he fails--for me at least--to develope in the succeeding chapters. I fail to see how his long, almost tedious account of Secretary Wirt's absence from his family contributes anything to "uncover the soul of the successor generation." Or how his account of Eliza Foster, or Mrs. Bascom, or Henry Clay's duel with John Randolph contributes much other than what may be intrisically interesting in each. Burstein has used so many obscure primary materials that he gets almost lost in them. And even to a non-historian he doesn't seem to have mastered history outside his materials. On the first page he writes that ". . .America's population had tripled to 12 million . . ." from Independence to the mid-1820's. Maybe it's his arithmetic: 2.5 million to at least 13 million is more like quintuple. And he writes in a note that William Wirt served longer as a cabinet officer than anyone before Harold Ickes. What about Albert Gallatin who served from very early in Jefferson's administration well into Madison's second term? Either Burstein's editor at Knopf was very indulgent, or there must have been many a heated argument.
Provides the words and experiences of ordinary citizens.......2001-03-16
In 1826 Americans remembered and celebrated fifty years of independence with parades and speeches. America's Jubilee uses private diaries, letters, newspapers and publications to reveal the personal lives behind the pageantry and celebrations, and the survivors of the War of Independence. Chapters provide the words and experiences of ordinary citizens.

Bood Description.......2001-02-07
The National Tribune was a post-war newspaper that catered to Civil War veterans. Former soldiers were encouraged to submit articles describing their wartime experiences and thousands of these personal accounts were published. Contributors, primarily Union veterans, ranged in rank from privates to generals, and their material covered a wide array of topics. Gettysburg was an especially popular theme. Scores of men who saw action in that epic battle used the National Tribune as a forum to explain their parts in the battle or the roles of their regiments. These writings were often detailed accounts and included material not found elsewhere. Frequently, debates erupted that ran their course through several issues of the paper. Included in this compilation are 142 of the best articles that appeared in the National Tribune. They encompass the entire campaign, from Ewell's success at Winchester to Lee's recrossing of the Potomac. This book presents the battle of Gettysburg through the eyes of the men who were there. From the accounts of these participants, today's readers can more fully appreciate and understand the men who fought and the events that transpired during those three, crucial, deadly days in July 1863.

Bronstein and Feynman.......2007-04-12
I have to disagree with the comments about Feynman made by another reviewer. I read through Feynman's Lectures on Physics two times, and then I scored near the top end of the scale on the Physics GRE. Of course it helped that I had previously spent four years doing hundreds of physics homework problems at a good university. But before I read Feynman my knowledge was a formless blob; Feynman brought it all together, made sense of it, and made it useable.
Translating that study program into chess terms might look like this: Several times work through several books whose author is named Polgar (Susan and/or Laszlo) or Ivashchenko or Blokh. Read Bronstein several times to bring everything together. Also, of course, play games frequently.
The other reviewer did make a very perceptive observation. Bronstein does feel a lot like Feynman: good ideas presented well by an advanced practitioner at a level that can be understood by intermediate practitioners.
The best book on chess strategy.......2004-10-22
At first this book looks like a primer of chess. But it is one of the best book ever written about chess strategy. GM Bronstein invented modern chess ( with a few others) so what he thinks is fundamental in chess strategy is very, very, very interesting.
I'm fide master and it is yet one of my favorite books.
Original, Memorable, and Useful.......2004-05-16
Bronstein is one of the best chess writers/instructors ever, and this is one of the best chess books! I find the reviewers who thought the games didn't illustrate his points, that it is difficult to read, and the book as a whole is not instuctive--incomprehensible.
The text is a joy to read (by chess book standards), the games illustrate key points in memorable, often startling ways, and his explanation of conducting a game in stages marching foward rank by rank and invadind with pieces through pawn structure quite unique, logical, and simple.
This book, along with a book on tactics and endings, would get a player far indeed if s/he puts in the hard work chess demands.
Fun writing; not much tutoring.......2003-05-11
Bronstein's words are pure joy to read. If that's what you're looking for, then this book may be for you, especially as most of the older books in this style are out of print.
However, I am not sure that anyone can learn much about chess from this book. He takes a paragraph, or even a page, to say what could be said in five words.
The games do not really illustrate his points. More often, they are simply sources of amusement, as when Petrosian blundered away his queen in a winning position while Bronstein had only 30 seconds left for 10 moves! Petrosian had plenty of time, but until he left his queen hanging he could find nothing better than to shuffle his rooks aimlessly while Bronstein let his knight bounce back and forth safely. Fortunately for us, translator Ken Neat added the actual moves; otherwise, we would have only Bronstein's description to go by.
Of course, not all the games contain such amusing mistakes. More often, Bronstein shows us positions which are interesting for a startling, somewhat tactical move overlooked by the opponent. So the games themselves are quite interesting.
And the prose is undeniably compelling:
"... every player believes that with the help of imagination and knowledge, tenacity and steadfastness, boldness and caution, sooner or later he will enter the headquarters of the opposing king and will be fortunate enough to utter the sacred words 'check and mate'."
But the words are not actually instructive. Sure, Bronstein has a way of bringing attention to an easily overlooked strategic element of a position. He also provides much advice, as in his section on the opening. (He advocates the Evans Gambit for amateurs.) But more often he simply gives a voice to the chess pieces, as if they could think.
Bronstein reminds me of Feynman writing on physics. You love to listen to him. You think you've been bequeathed a rich trove of wisdom. But when you sit down at your desk, you realize that you cannot actually apply any of what you thought you'd understood.
You may very well enjoy reading this book. Just do not expect to learn from it.
For real chess instruction, try his Zurich annotations.
A good book.......2002-08-09
The book has many well annoted games to illustrate the different learn items. Most of them Bronstein's own games.
A very good book for intermediate playes (>1600).
My rating is abt 1300 and the text was to difficult for me.

Tons of Great Information.......2004-03-02
This book is written for those who are looking to right to the bottom line, something a busy manager can appreciate. It has offered me several tips on how to make a great presentation. The only problem I have with the book is that there are quite a lot of typos which can detract from its credibility. Other than that the information is right on.
Best of both worlds.......2001-12-14
Presentation Skills for Managers by Jennifer and Mike Rotondo is the ideal book for busy presenters who need a thorough grounding in the art and science of presentation skills. The book is small but very complete, covering everything from planning to execution. Checklists and reviews at the end of each chapter keep you focused and organized.
I was very impressed with the wisdom of the two authors. This book doesn't gloss over its topic but rather provides very important information in a readable format. It starts by explaining how you should prepare from the outset and then explains the process of converting your research and outline into a PowerPoint presentation.
While this book does not cover PowerPoint in detail, it does explain the necessary steps for using PowerPoint to create a presentation. This combination of theory and practice is unique and very useful because the actual process involves both the conceptualization of the presentation's structure and the execution in PowerPoint. (Microsoft PowerPoint owns about 90% of the market for presentation software.) Clear steps for designing a presentation in terms of layout, consistency, and color guide you through the creation process.
Finally, Presentation Skills for Manager explains in detail how to deliver your great presentation, including a guide to dealing with questions, your own nervousness, technical disasters, and much more. After you read this book once, you'll refer to it again and again, whenever you need to create and deliver an important presentation. And hey, aren't all your presentations important?

A great guide for presenters at any level.......2001-10-31
You can tell Rotondo really knows what she is talking
about. This book is a great guide on how to get your
point across effectively. She mixes good knowledge on
various items from PowerPoint design, room set-up,
effective delivery tips, and content structuring. I
have attended seminars before on how to give good
presentations, but they just focused on public
speaking. This book covers everything from the
creation process all the way to the `Question &
Answer' session at the end of a presentation. The easy
layout of every chapter with icons and helpful hints
ensures that the reading is short and concise. I have
found this is a great "go-to" book whenever I start a
new presentation.

Great Customer Service on the Telephone (Worksmart Series)

Customer Reviews:
Obsolete.......2001-04-09
I am new to the 'home office' concept of working. A critical success factor in this setup, where face-to-face human interaction is minimal, is to have powerful telephone skills.
I found that the book is obsolete and does not cover modern-age telephone techniques including the following :
- Effective Conference Calling - Effective Technical Presentations on telephone - Effective 'Bridge Calling' - leaving effective voice mail messages - Telephone Etiquettes - Mobile Phone techniques - Controlled Gossiping - Getting past the secretary to the Boss
Instead, the book digresses into normal sales techniques and telemarketing techniques, contradicting with the book cover : 'guide for manager or business owner'.
The book can better be retitled as 'elementary telephone skills for telemarketers'
I am disappointed.

Book Description
Much has been written about communicating within organizations but relatively little on the critical skill of communicating upward. Green and Knippen, experts in employee motivation and performance, show how essential it is to the success of an organization, public or private, for employees to get their ideas up the ladder and into the hands of the top decision-makers. Their book outlines more than 40 specific upward communication needs and offers a structure that will ensure that the movement of ideas upward actually takes place. Unique in that it provides concrete advice for executives, managers, and employees alike, the book is especially important for human resource specialists, people engaged in training and developing the managers of tomorrow and contributing to the organization's success today. Green and Knippen are quick to identify the barriers to communication of any kind, and particularly the special barriers that inhibit the flow of ideas upward. They provide readers with concrete advice, not only on what to communicate upward but the essential skills of how to do it. They maintain that knowing both what to communicate and how to communicate are the most crucial talents that one can have, and yes, they can be taught. But not only do they help people in their careers, they also help people take control of their lives off the job as well. Those who want to improve these essential skills and in doing so get along better with people in higher level positions will find much wisdom here, in a readable, engaging presentation, and a thoughtful look at what they must do first, and do now.

expensive for what it has to offer.......2003-11-22
This is an ok book but not one that I'd rush out to buy. My clients are more in the Government than in private sector and the info in here talks more to private sector issues but communicatoion is communication and I was hoping there would be new ideas/techniques, maybe some stattistics/research on how people best reveive/convey information. I didn't really get that from this book. There are better ones out there that are less expensive (check out Communicating Change)
