Book Description
If you're interested in Plato, you're reading the wrong book. If you're interested in difficult childhoods, sexual misadventures, aesthetics, cultural history, and the reasons that a club sandwich and other meals--including breakfast--have remained in the memory of the present writer, keep reading.
--from Feelings Are Facts
In this memoir, dancer, choreographer, and filmmaker Yvonne Rainer traces her personal and artistic coming of age. Feelings Are Facts (the title comes from a dictum by Rainer's one-time psychotherapist) uses diary entries, letters, program notes, excerpts from film scripts, snapshots, and film frame enlargements to present a vivid portrait of an extraordinary artist and woman in postwar America.
Rainer tells of a California childhood in which she was farmed out by her parents to foster families and orphanages, of sexual and intellectual initiations in San Francisco and Berkeley, and of artistic discoveries and accomplishments in the New York City dance world. Rainer studied with Martha Graham (and heard Graham declare, "when you accept yourself as a woman, you will have turn-out"--that is, achieve proper ballet position) and Merce Cunningham in the late 1950s and early 1960s, cofounded the Judson Dance Theater in 1962 (dancing with Trisha Brown, Steve Paxton, David Gordon, and Lucinda Childs), hobnobbed with New York artists including Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Morris (her lover and partner for several years), and Yoko Ono, and became involved with feminist and anti-war causes in the 1970s and 1980s. Rainer writes about how she constructed her dances--including The Mind Is a Muscle and its famous section, Trio A, as well as the recent After Many a Summer Dies the Swan--and about turning from dance to film and back to dance. And she writes about meeting her longtime partner Martha Gever and discovering the pleasures of domestic life.
The mosaic-like construction of Feelings Are Facts recalls the composition-by-juxtaposition of Rainer's work in film and dance, displaying prismatic variations from what she calls her "reckless past" for our amazement and appreciation.

portrait of the artist as a young woman.......2006-11-02
This is a beautiful piece of writing and one of the most candid memoirs of the artist as a young woman that I have read. Although dance is not one of my major interests, I found Rainer's attraction to performing and her development as a dancer fascinating and applicable to anyone passionate about any field. Her descriptions of family members and her account of the difficulties of integrating sexual/intimate relationships and her work life are particularly moving and compelling. I was sorry when the book ended and recommend it particularly to young women trying to compose their lives. Also, the book itself is a delight to look at: great paper, interesting photographs and quality production.

excellent for you, your partner, your daughter.......1999-11-14
An excellent book for anyone who is a woman or loves awoman. Women, give this book to your partner! This book describes howwomen experience sex and what role sex plays in a woman's life. It also describes how women have successfully obtained meaning, substance, and fulfillment and satisfaction. It is a book that will give young girls confidence, knowledge about their body, and awareness about what society is trying to tell them to do and how they can assert themselves to be who they want instead of what others tell themto be. Partners gain understanding about how sex is a whole body and mind experience for a woman. Women feel fellowship with the stories shared and gain advice on dealing with problems. This book doesn't generalize and is always open-minded. If I ever have a daughter, I would give her this book.

Was it a one-night stand or true love? What are the symptoms of chlamydia? How do I know if my drinking is out of control? While questions like these may be a parent's worst nightmare, they weigh heavily on the minds of today's teens and twentysomethings. Thankfully, The "Go Ask Alice" Book of Answers has come to the rescue, providing straightforward, nonjudgmental, comprehensive answers to the toughest, most embarrassing questions teens (and adults) have about their sexual, emotional, and physical health. Inspired by Columbia University's award-winning and hugely popular Q&A Web site, this essential book is packed with answers to questions initially posed online. The university's health service staff has collaborated to ensure that each topic--from how to kiss to the effects of LSD--is given candid, educated attention in an easy-to-digest Q&A format. Queries posed to "Dear Alice" are answered with humor, understanding, and a complete lack of didacticism. A thorough list of resources is included, providing telephone numbers and Internet addresses for related health organizations, as well as directions for where to look on the Go Ask Alice Web site for more information on the immense variety of subjects. With this excellent book in hand, older teens and college students will be better prepared for the journey to adulthood. And grown-ups would benefit as well from the wealth of information contained in these pages. (Ages 15 and older) --Brangien Davis

Kids, sex, life -- they all gotta come together somehow.......2003-11-17
At www.goaskalice.columbia.edu, there is one of the best sources for advice on sex, relationships, and health for people ages 14 and up. This book is the print version.
It has nothing to do with the adolescent potboiler written by Beatrice Sparks; its information on drugs and sex is technical, explicit, and meant to give answers, not scare people. The gamut of advice given runs from flirting to penis size to the effects of various drugs on the body to urinary tract infections, and it's delivered with humor and understanding, without the judgementalism that seems to be the case in many more traditional books.
While I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who hasn't hit their 13th birthday yet, this book is an antidote for prudishness and the information vacuum far too many young people live in, and in a world where basic information on sex and life can often be hard to find or heavily polluted by unnecessary moralism, this book can help ease fears and educate the uneducated in a way that scare stories and sermons can't.
Excellent factual information.......2002-03-02
This book fills a definite need for adolescents. It presents the facts, not fallacy, to all of the questions they have that parents and other caregivers may be too embarrassed to talk about. It is from an extremely reputable source (Columbia University), and is readable and accessible to the average teen. Kudos to the people who put together "The Go Ask Alice Book of Answers".
Read T-h-i-s GO ASK ALICE Book For Info On Health Issues.......1999-06-04
The review dated May 9, 1999 is not germain to this book, having a similar title to an earlier fictional book simply titled Go Ask Alice.
This book illustrates and discusses issues regarding healthy practices on many levels.
WAKE UP CALL.......1999-05-05
I think everyone should read this book especially every teenager. The wrighter of this journal went through just about everything. I could only imagine how it felt. Some of my peers at school read some short segments of Go Ask Alice and they couldn't believe how true and explictedly described it was. I also think this book could wake up some teens in this world and it could let them know that no matter what some of their peers may say drugs are not cool and they can ruin everything you want and everthing you have going for yourself just like it did for the writer of Go Ask Alice.

Book Description
For teens too shy to talk too mom and dad about sex, this book offers good, sound advice on a highly personal level filling in some of the blanks in their knowledge about sex and relationships. Designed to help teens aged 16-19 make their own decisions about sexuality, Making Sexual Decisions talks not only about the facts of sexual health but also provides them with some things to think about when it comes to the feelings and emotions that surround sex.
The philosophy of this book is:
· Teens have a right to ask questions and get the answers.
· Teens already know a lot, but not all there is to know, about sex and relationships.
· Teens are going to make their own decisions about sex. Having access to information can help them make better, safer decisions.
· No question should be left unanswered.
The information included in this book is relevant to the lives of teens, but includes topics that are not often discussed. It provides an education about sex that is practical, and gives teens a sense of what is going on "out there"-in other people and the worlds of research and politics as well as inside themselves.

Book Description
Whatever instrument you play, you can bet your "special problems" with you instrument and your bandmates will be covered in this book. The book "The Best Musicians Jokes" will both make you ask and answer the question why it is so important for musicians to laugh. You simply just HAVE to laugh about a career in which the more you learn to play your instrument the less likely you are to make a living playing it. Anyway, enjoy the book!
Customer Reviews:
Bruno Kassel, author of this book, writes:.......2002-10-02
Laughter is very important to musicians. You have to laugh about a career in which the more you learn to master your instrument the less likely you are to make a living playing it.
We are bombarded every day by the media showing us that the way to success in music is to come up with a childishly simple song with as little melody and harmony as possible, a deafening machine generated beat and a thoroughly tasteless and negative lyric sung out of tune. This must be performed whilst jerking and writhing as if recently bitten by a sea-snake.
Any languid and genuinely erotic movement will upset your target audience who are aged eight and a half.
You may wear baggy clothing or scraps of leather, plastic, latex or, best of all, rubber. Any combination of these will appeal to the kiddies who have only just left the toilet training stages of life and remember fondly diapers and other garments of containment.
The revealing of large areas of naked flesh will also increase your chances, especially if the skin is wet or oily. This will remind your viewer/listeners of the occasional failure of the aforementioned garments.
So, my dear striving musician friends, follow my advice, make the millions and retire to Paradise Island before your twenty first birthday.
Except you won't. Hopefully you'll laugh at the above example of cynical humour and go back to enjoying your instrument. Ignore the dross which MTV churns out and search for the best in MUSIC. Along the way you'll find the best in humour too, because musicians love to laugh about themselves. And that's the reason for this delightful little book.
I would strongly advise every performing player to keep a copy close by because, if the power goes off, a string breaks, a lip splits, a drum stick cracks or the soprano swallows her false teeth, you can become a stand-up comedian for a few minutes until the show can go on.
Some of the most amusing lines come out of real life situations. At least I hope they're true, they are so delicious. Here's how I heard them anyway.
Highly experienced session singer, Lee Gibson, is sitting in an empty recording studio ready to begin her work. The Spice Girls march in and are outraged to see her sitting there.
SPICE GIRLS (in dodgy harmony): "What do you think you're doing in here? This studio is booked for us. And who are you anyway?"
LEE: "...I'm your voice!"
Eric Clapton had dicided to change his band and summoned them all to explain his reasons, that the Eric Clapton Band as it had been known for several years would be no more. The excellent drummer was the good-humoured, Steve Ferrone.
STEVE: "That's fine, Eric, but can we keep the name?"
A fine group of English session guys have turned up to put down some tracks with Bob Dylan in a London studio, among them the tremendously experienced Scottish guitar giant, Jim Mullen. There is no sign of Bob. Hours go by and the great man doesn't appear. The musicians are becoming restless to say the least. Finally an American manager steps in to address the band, who have waited all day.
AMERICAN MANAGER: "Bob won't be coming in today. He's got problems with his voice."
JIM: "What f****** voice???"
Another story of life on the road with Buddy Rich as told to me by the one and only Jake Hanna, although the Rotten Kid is only the audience here. The Buddy Rich Sextet has a new piano player and he is in the middle of an exploratory solo, maybe too much Cecil Taylor and not enough Art Tatum. The old-pro sax player takes out his linen handkerchief, opens it and spreads it over the pianists furiously working fingers.
PIANIST: "What the f*** did you do that for?"
SAX: "I'm covering up the scene of the crime."
PIANIST: "You should be careful how you talk to me. I used to be a boxer."
SAX: "Then maybe you should have taken your gloves off before you came to the gig."
Buddy falls off seat with laughter. He loved it when others could be as acidly funny as he was.
Keith Richards, the man who put the stone into Rolling, had invited his father to Paris to see one of their concerts. After the show the entourage made their various ways back to the hotel. Charlie Watts discovered Mr. Richards senior already at the bar enjoying a large cognac.
CHARLIE: "You should take it easy with that stuff, Mr. Richards, or one day you'll look like your son!"
Now these tales and many others have been passed around amongst the musos and we delight in them because they deal with names we all know, and they're funny.
They are also a tribute to those names who can both dish out a comic comment or be on the receiving end. There is no cruelty here and it seems healthy to be able to kid around with one another; something that musicians do a lot. As a drummer I love the drummer jokes and they have a ring of truth about them.
Whatever instrument you play, I want to wish you a happy and satisfying life doing something you love: making music - how lucky we are. Yes, we certainly need a sense of humour, and you'll find a lot of it here in "THE BEST MUSICIANS' JOKES"!!!
Book Description
A Treasury of Nautical Lore
No place offers more adventure than the ocean. No dungeon is as deep, no jungle as full of exotic and dangerous life. Most folk spend their entire lives on dry ground, unaware that entire civilizations thrive beneath the waves, sometimes far more ancient and steeped in mystery than any on the world's upper surface. Though player characters (PCs) have long grown familiar with the air-breathing world above, seldom do they venture into the depths, and when they do, they discover wonders they never dreamed existed. The ocean offers a venue for adventure that is at once alien and appealing. Strange things exist down there, as perilous as they are compelling.
Maritime Adventure
Dead Man's Chest lays bare the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it. Within these pages are detailed rules for ship movement, as well as guidelines for underwater exploration, and three complete maritime adventures. At last there is a comprehensive D20 source for sailing and the seapacked with over 100 new magic items, monsters, feats, prestige classes, and spells.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-06-30
This book is dense: offering a lot for the price. No wasted pages. I really liked the mini-adventures in the back, which look like a lot of fun to run. Anyone thinking to run a marine campaign, or maybe just a side adventure on the high seas, should pick up this gem.
Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum!.......2006-04-07
Not really a book on pirates but it has chart after chart after chart for weather conditions to make the experience a little more "real". It also has revisions for certain classes to make them "fit" better in a nautical campaign. More feats, monsters and the obligatory new prestige classes but these serve to help define the campaign and characters therein. Sea Serpents are defined as dragons and for most part this does make sense and the variety of sea serpents is one I found rather intrigueing. There are also some short adventures to get you started on what sort of encounters are possible with such a campaign. All in all it's a toolbox for nautical fun. Very much worth getting if you plan on starting this sort of campaign or even just planning an extended trip into the watery world of exploration or just a little honest piracy.
Book Description
When a company decides to make a major organizational changewhether it's a new emphasis on customer service, quality management, restructuring or downsizingmanagers must get the message through to front-line employees, and enlist their support...or the changes will create more turmoil than progress.
Written for busy managers at all levels, Communicating Change offers specific prescriptions for effecting successful change centered around three guiding principles:
- Conveying the message through supervisors
- Communicating face-to-face
- Making the changes relevant to each work area
In addition, a variety of helpful forms, checklists, sample communications, and surveys help managers to quickly put these principles into action.
Customer Reviews:
common sense communication improvements.......2007-01-18
I work as a Communications Specialist... sounds impressive, but really it is all about listening...and this book gives real world examples and steps for improving how you communicate change in your company. Perhaps I enjoy it because it supports my own theory that a chat or memo from the CEO is nice, but who is the guy/woman? really?...the immediate supervisor is the one I interact with everyday... that person is the key to clear communication and the conduit to change.
This is an easy-to-read book, presenting clear practical solutions.
Packed with Knowledge !.......2005-02-23
Nearly every CEO of a large corporation believes that words directly from his or her mouth will inspire front-line employees. Five decades of research show just the opposite, explain consultants and authors T.J. and Sandar Larkin. Their investigations emphasize the importance of communicating change through low-level supervisors, a group that has more credibility with front-line workers. They maintain that CEOs must go beyond simply telling supervisors what to do; they must also listen to these key employees and empower them by taking their suggestions seriously. The authors provide plenty of real-world examples to bolster their case. We recommend this clearly constructed argument to CEOs and to anyone charged with communicating with large numbers of employees. This engaging treatise, a classic, is ready to persuade its next crop of managers.
Good reference.......2003-11-22
My line of consulting has a lot to do with change management and communicating change so this was a good book to refer to for additional ideas and tools for the toolkit. One of the chapters that sticks out in my mind is the one that talks to how people prefer to hear certain types of messages (e.g. from their direct mananger, through an email, at an all hands meeting etc) The author uses actual data from surveys to back up his ideas which I fpund helpful - not only in helping me recommend certain vehicles for communication but also convincing others. Good resource.
A superb book.......2000-06-11
I'm an academic--a professor of corporate communication--and this is one of the few books I recommend to students in this area. Larkin bases every one of his assertions on applied research in organizational communication--very refreshing from the "I did it in my organization, so it must work in your company" perspective of most business authors. Larkin also completely shatters myths around traditional corporate communication practices (e.g. the executive should communicate directly to employees around major change areas), and bases such assertions on research in the area *plus* his own consulting experience (of which he has a great deal). My students also loved this book. If you buy one book on employee/corporate communication, this is the one.
Breath of fresh air.......1999-12-22
After years of being force-fed communications theories that didn't work, it was a real joy to see reality documented. The solutions presented are too simple to be acceptable to anyone more interested in documenting "quality" than running a business. These "rules" help: they work in practice (when was the last time you heard that about a communications theory?): and they will change your world.
