    Book Description

European Film Theory and Cinema explores the major film theories and movements within European cinema from the 1900s onwards. The study is organized around two major traditions which dominate European film theory and cinema: the ãintuitionist modernist and realistä tradition and the ãpost- Saussurianä tradition. This original and critically astute introduction is a work of intellectual history that considers film theory within the context of the intellectual climate of the last two centuries.

Bob Dylan's tour of Europe in May of 1966 has long been a point of fascination for his most dedicated fans, thanks mostly to the tapes of incendiary gigs that leaked out and were bootlegged over the years. Treasured tapes of the phenomenal show he gave in Manchester, England, on May 17, 1966, have been passed among fortunate collectors for decades, and the show has finally been officially released by Dylan's record label as Live, 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall Concert." Now those who've only attended the legendary Manchester gig in dreams can journey back to join C.P. Lee and his mates. Lee, a professor today, was at the age of 16 one of the lucky 1,800 to be blasted and blown away by the intense aural assault Dylan unleashed inside Manchester's Free Trade Hall. Writing with an eye for the quirky detail, Lee takes the reader along to the concert, introducing us to the steadfast fans as well as those who came to heckle. Not only is Like the Night great fun, but the author possesses keen understanding for Dylan and his music, and his insights into Dylan as both performer and as a cultural force should be required reading for anyone who claims to be a Dylan fanatic. --Robert McNamara

          Book Description

Revised and updated edition of the hugely acclaimed document of Dylan's pivotal 1966 Manchester Free Trade Hall show where fans called him Judas for turning his back on folk music in favour of rock 'n' roll. After years of notoriety as the most famous bootleg of them all, the concert recording finally received an official release at the same time as the book's first outing.

"For any fan of Dylan, this is quite simply essential."-Time Out

4 out of 5 stars Well researched and insightful.......2002-01-12

We are often told of how musicians and singers touch their audience with their work. But this book puts that sort of insight into a historical context which is quite compelling. We learn much from oral history and the author's own experience, but the author obviously did more than scholarly homework for this project. There is an authoritative command of the subject matter. I would recommend this book to any Dylan fans or those studying popular culture in general. For better and for worse, Dylan is a historical figure and shaped a generation with his move from folk to pop. His contribution to popular music should not be underestimated. Dr. CP Lee of Salford University gives this subject the serious study it deserves.

          2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2000-01-20

For some reason this was a disappointing read. Of course any information about Bob Dylan and especially this concert is great, but the way it's processed in this book is distracting. The best parts are the stories of the people who were there. The least effective were Lee's cultural analyses and song analyses. The more he writes the more he gets further and further away from Bob Dylan, it seems. The music from this show is so great, and deserves better. That those great songs are trod through local cultural suppositions is distasteful. Scrounge around for Eat the Document, listen to the Live 1966 album, leave this book in the dustbin.

1 out of 5 stars Redundant, overpriced, and poorly written.......1999-04-23

You can buy Bob Dylan's LIVE 1966 in any self-respecting record store, and it comes with liner notes superior to this book.

5 out of 5 stars It used to be like that, now it goes like this..........1999-01-13

Well, what have we here? Only the best book yet written about the 1966 Bob Dylan world tour, and by focusing on the crucial Manchester 5/17/66 concert (now officially released), and by providing fascinating background detail surrounding the events leading up to this particular concert, Lee has demonstrated in a very entertaining way the reasons why we should care about Bob Dylan and the direction his music took in the mid 1960s. It's hard to believe now, after listening to the recently released Live 1966 double-CD set, that this music was dismissed as trash and the tour itself considered to be a disaster. In fact, the music created by Dylan and the Hawks at Manchester (and other venues in Europe in 1966) has proven to be more influential and longer lasting than most other contemporary music of the time. 1966 was truly the year that the music changed, and Dylan was there leading the way. C.P. Lee's eyewitness account shows us why music fans still talk about this amazing concert 33 years later.

i am very disappointed from this book. Its title seemed to me very promising but nothing matched my expectations. This book contains a lot of chess interviews some interesting some not..But nothing more, it is just a collection of interviews that the author- a known chess journalist- has taken through out his career. Moreover he uses the very marketable name of bobby fischer inspite that only a brief part of the book is refering to him. Save your money for something else....

          Book Description

Owners of small C & S corporations will learn how to emerge from IRS suspicions of improper personal gains when conducting businesses as private entities. This book examines the characteristics of a bona fide corporation with annual gross receipts under 5 million. These businesses, known as small C or S corporations, can play a vital role in the enhancement of personal wealth by those owners who are prudent and visionary-provided such owners observe the tax laws. Topics covered in this book include accounting consistency and methods; the omens of undercapitalization; the importance of balance sheets and C vs. S treatment of retained earnings; expenditures that are expressly not deductible; and "tax basis" establishments in each share of stock held. Featured in detail are explanations of sections of the tax code and rules of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed on S Corp Coverage.......2005-08-02

I chose this book to get more information on running an S Corporation, and I've been utterly disappointed. The author spends more time telling you the number of words in the tax code then on the meat & potatoes of the information. The chapter on compensation was particularly void of any S Corp information. Overall, I think there are far better sources available.

5 out of 5 stars Good book on incorporating.......2003-12-01

If you are interested in starting either a C or a S corporation, you'll love this book. I've bought some other books supposedly written by experts and was dissappointed.

From the supplier: Many administrative changes resulted from the Small Business Job Protection Act of 1996 for S corporation tax law from Sept 1996 through Aug 1997. S corporation eligibility, terminations, and characterization of operations have been affected by the act. Other legislative changes which increase the efficacy of S corporations are also discussed.

From the supplier: Relief from IRS administrative rigor was provided by Congress' enactment of an equitable provision regarding timeliness of S corporation elections in the Small Business Job Protection Act of 1996. S corporation status previously was routinely denied to taxpayers filing late elections regardless of cause. IRC section 1362(b)(5) provides that the IRS may excuse untimeliness for reasonable cause.

From the supplier: The 50% exclusion of gain from the sale of qualified small business stock under Internal Revenue Code section 1202 makes C corporation status more appealing if corporate income is being retained, but S corporations still provide greater tax benefits if stock sale is contemplated. The opportunities to convert from S status to C status to benefit from the 50% exclusion are limited. Qualified small business stock cannot have been issued for other stock unless that other stock was also qualified. The best option for the S corporation wishing to qualify may be to recapitalize so that future appreciation will receive the 50% exclusion.

From the supplier: A corporation must submit a timely election consented to by all shareholders as of the day of the election when choosing to be taxed as an S corporation. If the stock of the company is held as community property both the husband and wife are considered shareholders by the IRS, and consent must be acquired from both. The Treasury regulations provide for delinquent consents, but the IRS may or may not recognize them. As such, it is important to get the consent of all shareholders promptly.

From the supplier: The rules on treatment of income in respect of a decedent (IRD) have been changed under the 1996 Small Business Job Protection Act and could prove useful to tax planning by S corporation shareholders. IRD treatment of pro rata share of income allows individuals who inherit or acquire S stock from a decedent to treat such income as if it had been directly acquired. The effect of the revised IRD rules on stepped-up basis, partnership tax planning, and related issues is also discussed.
