"A witty, provocative, and necessary re-evaluation of the phenomenon known as Jerry Lewis. I myself have loved and despised Jerry, often both at the same time; I needed this book to tell me why."
-—David Cronenberg

"These original, varied approaches are the heftiest appreciation of Lewis in English... Recommended."
—Booklist

The one thing everybody knows about Jerry Lewis is that he is beloved by the French, those incomprehensible hedonistic strangers across the sea. The French understand him, while in the U.S. he is at best a riddle, not one of us. Lewis is someone we take profound pleasure in excluding, if not ridiculing.

Enfant Terrible! Jerry Lewis in American Film is the first comprehensive collection devoted to one of the most controversial and accomplished figures in twentieth-century American cinema. A veteran of virtually every form of show business, Lewis's performances onscreen and the motion pictures he has directed reveal significant filmmaking talents, and show him to be what he has called himself, a "total filmmaker." Yet his work has been frequently derided by American critics.

This book challenges that easy reading by taking a more careful look at Lewis's considerable body of work onscreen in 16 diverse and penetrating essays. Turning to such films asThe Nutty Professor, The Ladies Man, The King of Comedy, The Delicate Delinquent, Living It Up, The Errand Boy, The Disorderly Orderly, Arizona Dream, and The Geisha Boy, the contributors address topics ranging from Lewis's on- and offscreen performances, the representations of disability in his films, and the European obsession with Lewis, to his relationship with Dean Martin and Lewis's masculinity. Far from an out of control hysteric, Enfant Terrible! instead reveals Jerry Lewis to be a meticulous master of performance with a keen sense of American culture and the contemporary world.

Contributors include: Mikita Brottman, Scott Bukatman, David Desser, Leslie A. Fiedler, Craig Fischer, Lucy Fischer, Krin Gabbard, Barry Keith Grant, Andrew Horton, Susan Hunt, Frank Krutnik, Marcia Landy, Peter Lehman, Shawn Levy, Dana Polan, Murray Pomerance, and J. P. Telotte.

4 out of 5 stars Who established "tiers" of American cinema comedy?.......2006-06-16

I just read the review of this book by Jmark2001, which apparently has been here since 2002. In any event, as a professional film historian who has written about comedy for 20 years, I must say that I have never run into these mysterious "tiers of film comedy" this person mentioned in his review. I agree that Jerry Lewis deserves a real reassessment in the U.S. before he passes on, but placing the superlative Laurel and Hardy in a "second tier of film comedians?" Please! Many film historians consider L&H the absolute apex, and DEFINITELY the greatest comedy team of all time. Abbott and Costello on a "second tier," maybe. The Three Stooges, UNDOUBTEDLY. But we are talking about apples and oranges here, in the first place. Go ahead and praise Jerry Lewis, but let's not denigrate two absolute geniuses like Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Saying they were second-rate is akin to saying the same thing about Beethoven or Satchmo! (This is a very good book, by the way!)

4 out of 5 stars Will somebody please stand up the real Jerry Lewis?.......2004-11-26

Books on the "king of comedy" are, unfortunately, few and far between.A much misunderstood, underappreciated and undeservedly maligned genius.I must also state that Lewis could sometimes (often?) be his own comedic "worst enemy" ,and his on-screen persona arguably worked best when he was directed BY someone other than himself (a'la Frank Tashlin).
But Lewis has always been a man who's failures are almost as fascinating as his triumphs. This book is a compendium of essays on the various facets of the Lewis persona--most of which are authoratative and fascinating. It comes highly recommended and every JL fan will want to read what it has to say.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Lewis: Comic genius gone terribly wrong.......2002-11-03

Lewis is a bewildering American talent: he is one of the best comedy directors around, was an amazingly original screen comic (we too easily forget that his character - the nerdy adolescent - was new when he invented him), was an excellent mime, an inventor (he invented several innovations still used in film), writer of much of his material, actor, singer, etc. He could easily have been remembered as being on the second tier of American film comics (along with Laurel and Hardy) though he aspired to be on the first tier with Chaplin and Keaton. So what went wrong? Why do people hold their nose when his name comes up (except in Europe)? Although his personality has become increasingly abrasive over the years and his screen character was not able to age gracefully (what comic personae does? Look at the abominable final films that Chaplin made!), it must be remembered that all of this is not Lewis' fault. He had a disastrous back injury (on live tv, no less) in the early sixties that gave him unbearable pain for years afterward and that led to his abuse of painkillers. That accident sapped most of his creative powers. It is terrible that so much of the good stuff that Lewis is responsible for has been forgotten. He deserves some objective reassessment. I hope someone will do this before he dies as he deserves to be recognized here in the USA as an important figure.

4 out of 5 stars For obsessive fans only.......2003-07-18

This book's contents are so exhaustive, containing such a wealth of information, much of it rather insignificant in itself, that only the most obsessive of Dylan fans would ever buy it, much less slog through its voluminous contents. Needless to say, I bought it and did so. If you are truly interested in Bob Dylan, in a scholarly and historical sense, not just as a fan of his music, then you will serve yourself well by getting this book. If you are not, however... well, let's put this book into perspective:

What this book purports to be is a chronicle of Bob Dylan's life -- not an autobiography, but, rather, a listing of each day of his life, from the day of his birth up until the year this book was published (1997); as short pre-history is included, as well. Now, as you probably assumed, the book is not exactly this: Dylan is, and always has been, a mysterious, aloof, and reclusive character, despite his great fame. Consequently, long stretches, often encompassing months at a time, are missing from this chronicle. Still, what is here is amazing. Documented herein is a record of every recording session, rehearsal, and tour that Dylan had done up to this point. Heylin tells you what songs were played, how many times, what the arrangements were, if there were any changes from their original incarnation, what musicians played on them, etc. Also documented are most of Dylan's interviews -- where, with whom, and about what. These kinds of details form the vast majority of the book; needless to say, the more personal aspects of Dylan's life are as unknown to Heylin as they are to the rest of us, and probably always will be. Examples of the other kinds of information that he manages to include are such things as Dylan's travels, public appearances and events, and the like.

As one can see, this is not a book for the casual Bob Dylan fan. If you are looking for a biography, stay far, far away from this; Heylin's own Behind The Shades is a good place to start for that type of tome. On the other hand, if you are a Bob Dylan fan who is truly interested not only in the man's music and life, but in the historical and scholarly aspects of his work, then this is a book that you will want to eventually pick up. Due to its lack of brevity in information and the level of obsessiveness in its detail, however, this is still a book that you will want to pick up later, after your collection already includes numerous other Dylan books -- biographies, lyrical analyses, etc. -- before you take on this daunting volume.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE FOR ALL DYLAN FANS.......2001-05-06

This excellent book documents every concert, recording session and personal appearance that Dylan has ever done. Includes T.V. and radio appearances as well as unrealesed recordings. The book is laid out by each year and tells what Dylan was doing on a particular day of that year. Incredible and exhaustive research which makes one believe that Dylans every move has been documented by someone and all that info has been gathered in this stupendous edition. Out of the many Dylan books I own , this is without a doubt the one I turn to the most. INVALUABLE.

5 out of 5 stars The amazing poetics of Bob Dylan...keep moving on..........2000-05-24

Once, in the environs of Wheeler Hall in the mid 80s, I was talking to Robert Pinksy about this-and-that poetics, and I was ranting in hyperbolic style about Bob Dylan being a kind of Blake for our time, refiguring "Jesus the Imagination" in a time of imperial blight and so on. Pinsky looked at me wryly, a bit baffled, and said, "Dylan is somebody I never got into. I never really thought of him as a poet." I was amazed by this comment, and begin to wonder (as I often do) if I knew what poetry is anymore. But I never lost my amazement towards B Dylan, and his latest Nietzschean attack on his own deepest belief structures and pieties in "Time Out of Mind" and "Things Have Changed" from "Wonderboys" soundtrack only confirms the scope, depth, and generic visionary quality of his work. Happy Birthday Bob Dylan....

5 out of 5 stars "Absolutely" essential Dylan reference "(approximately)".......2000-02-03

For any true fan, a "must have" reference. Day to day account of the life of the master poet/musician/performer.Get it, by all means get it!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Refrence book for Dylan Fans.......1999-10-09

This is a good reference book for Dylan fans. It has no analysis or commentary and just an occasional opinion. At times the details may seem a little excessive, but the information is not too expansive as to be overwhelming (I can't say the same for some other Dylan books).

Book Description

"To this day, wherever great rock music is being made, there is the shadow of Bob Dylan," said Bruce Springsteen at the induction of Dylan into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Or to quote John Rockwell, "Anyone who didn't live through the sixties simply cannot realize how important his albums seemed then; they defined a community." Dylan is a musical, literary, political, and religious icon whose lyrics and mystique have spawned countless articles and books. The Dylan Companion is a generous helping of the best, most pungent, and most insightful commentary on Dylan from all phases of his career right up to the present: personal recollections and professional assessments from the likes of Ken Kesey, Greil Marcus, Joan Baez, Andrew Motion, Lester Bangs, Kurt Loder, Allen Ginsberg, Pauline Kael, Geoff Dyer, Simon Winchester, and Robert Christgau-over fifty pieces celebrating the sixty-year-old performer who somehow manages to stay forever young.

4 out of 5 stars Indispensable Guide to Four Decades of Dylan's Genius.......1999-01-13

This handy, indispensable edited volume of Dylan essays, reviews, and interviews -- covering everything from the early 1960s to the blazing Neverending Tour -- reaches deep into Dylan's back pages, providing fans and casual readers alike with unique insight into Bob Dylan's writing, recording and touring philosophy, and religious beliefs. His transcendence and impact on American music and culture in the 20th century is contemplated by both avid admirers and, on occasion, even caustic conservative critics... Best of all, though, this volume pays proper attention to Dylan's work in the last 10-20 years -- a startling and welcome achievement for a Dylan commentary. Especially enlightening are recent interviews with Dylan and ample coverage of the Kennedy Center Honors, Time Out of Mind, and the many other projects and accolades of recent years.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent "Critique" of Bob Dylan's Career.......1998-12-11

This was a very informative book about Bob Dylan's musical career. Since most of it was written by different critics over the years, you get many diverse views of Dylan and his music, and this works in many ways.

          Book Description

Almost a half century after his death in 1953, the Welsh author Dylan Thomas continues to capture the attention of scholars and critics. Though he attained some measure of fame before he died, he never enjoyed financial prosperity. His life was plagued with difficulties of all kinds, and he was only 39 years old at the time of his death. Some of his works, such as "Fern Hill" and "Do not go gentle into that good night" are frequently included in anthologies, and Thomas is now often considered one of the most important and original poets of the 20th century. During his trips to the United States, he read his works to large audiences on college campuses. He also made a number of radio broadcasts and recordings, and his moving voice made scores of listeners respond emotionally to his poems. Though Dylan Thomas has earned his place in literary history, readers often find his poems difficult to understand. This reference book is a valuable guide to his life and work. Because his writings are so very much a product of his troubled life, the volume begins with an insightful biography that provides a context for understanding Thomas's works. The second section then systematically overviews his works. While his poems receive much attention, the section also includes discussions of his prose works, his filmscripts, and his broadcasts. A third section then surveys the critical and scholarly response to his writings, with separate chapters detailing his reception in Wales, England, and North America. A selected bibliography lists editions of Thomas's works, along with the most important general studies of his writings.

"The one, only, and by far the best book synthesizing psychology and investing. In addition to providing modern, scientific knowledge about psychology, this book provides a mirror into the mind and wide breadth of knowledge of one of the leading practitioners of brief and effectual cures. -Victor Niederhoffer, Chief Speculator, Manchester Investments
Author, The Education of a Speculator and Practical Speculation

"How refreshing! A book that rises above the old NLP model of the 80's and provides insights on how our relationship with the market is indeed a very personal one. Not only has Steenbarger provided some fantastic tools for the trader to transform his mindset, but he has contributed unique trading ideas as well. Brilliant!"
                  -Linda Raschke, President, LBRGroup, Inc.

"`Investigate, before you invest' was for many years the slogan of the New York Stock Exchange. I always thought a better one would be, `Investigate YOURSELF, before you invest.' The Psychology of Trading should help you increase your annual investment rate of return. Mandatory reading for anyone intending to earn a livelihood through trading. "
-Yale Hirsch, The Hirsch Organization Inc., Editor, The Stock Trader's Almanac

"This highly readable, highly educational, and highly entertaining book will teach you as much about yourself as about trading. It's Oliver Sacks meets Mr. Market-extraordinary tales of ordinary professionals and individuals with investment disorders, and how they successfully overcame them. It is a must-read both for private investors who have been shell-shocked in the bear market and want to learn how to start again, as well as for pros who seek an extra edge from extra inner knowledge. Steenbarger's personal voyage into the mind of the market is destined to become a classic."
-Jon Markman, Managing Editor, CNBC on MSN Money
Author, Online Investing and Swing Trading

"Dr. Steenbarger's fascinating, highly readable blend of practical insights from his dual careers as a brilliant psychologist and trader will benefit every investor; knowing oneself is as important as knowing the market."

2 out of 5 stars Not an Easy Study .......2006-12-02

I have found the book difficult to apply to my real life. The case histories shared seem promising and interesting, but when I ask,"How does this mirror my own life, and how do I apply the information?" I can't come up with the answers. I am pragmatic, very "bottom line," and this book isn't.

After reading through page 100 and still finding no clear directives, I became bored with it and turned to a more consice, and more interactive book on trading psychology (an ebook titled, "Emotion Free Trading" by Larry Levine, available through [...]: much easier to interpret and utilize).

I gave the book two stars because it is professionally written, and may be suitable to other personality types.

5 out of 5 stars Psychology of Trading.......2006-08-27

I am a relatively new currency trader, and started reading this book after loosing some money. It perfectly parallels some of my behaviour and gave me insight on how to change my trading (and my life) in order to avoid repating past errors. I highly recommend this book for any trader.

                  5 out of 5 stars It's all about Psychology.......2006-04-13

I believe that this book will be of interest to everyone who is interested in Psychology.
Whether or not interested in trading.
The author was able throughout the whole book to capture my interest and attention. I continuously found myself immersed in the book.
His approach is funny and interesting; the real life stories are highly educational where anyone could relate to or knows about someone who could fit the picture. This makes it easy to use and to take the advice and turn ones own life around.
I strongly recommend this book to any person who is considering taking up trading or is trading already. This is a must read before any technical or fundamental book.
It is absolute great value for money.
