Everything about this book is entertaining -- its theme (we've always had strong opinions about doctors), its subject matter (movies, good and bad), and its style (peter dans has a wonderful dry sense of humor). It's also an enlightening book. It lets us look back at what our standards were--for doctors and for movies--and proves once again that times change and life is much more fun if we don't take ourselves too seriously. Doctors and movie buffs will enjoy this book most of all. Everyone else will find it a great read or a great gift.

This book is fun and compelling. I'm not sure what I enjoyed more -- his dry wit and frank assessments of movies obscure and well-known -- or his physician's insight of medicine and its myths.

        This is a superb work, chock-full of insights and intelligently organized by topic. Here's two key examples of frequently occurring dilemmas sorely neglected elsewhere: (A) Defending a suit contract as third hand, you can either cash a high card in a side suit, setting up a winner in dummy, or you can underlead your high card to give partner a ruff. Which should you do? In practice, either may be correct, depending on the context of the entire hand. Kantar gives a COMPLETE autopsy of exactly what to think about in order to make the correct choice. (B) Defending a suit contract as third hand, you hold ATxx in a side suit. Dummy hits with a small singleton in that suit. Kantar points out that you KNOW declarer is going to lead that singleton through you sooner or later, probably sooner. Do you fly in with the Ace or duck (smoothly)? The latter is more often correct, but not always. Here too, Kantar gives precise guidance on what to think about in order to choose the correct defensive play. The well over 500 tips in the book are loaded with good advice such as "When declarer doesn't dare lose the lead and is guessing which finesse to take for the fulfilling trick, cover NOTHING."

        This is perhaps the most expensive book besides collectables. Judging from the size and amount of information, it probably worths $5 - but I had to buy it simply because the professor uses it as textbook.
        Granted that this is a book for business management professionals or to-be's, but this does not mean the book should be this expensive. You'll know what I mean when you see the book. I think they they are taking advantage of that fact that most people buy this book get reimbursed - my self for one will get reimbursement from my company, but I resent the fact that I have to buy such an expensive book and waste my company's money only because I have to. This is robbery - it's not printing book, it's more like printing money.

        I used a previous edition of Ms. Munter's book as a text in a graduate course in management communications. The latest edition adds some new subjects and is still one of the best books on the subject. If you could only have one book on this subject this would be a good choice. Even though this book covers a broad base of communication skills (strategy, written, verbal and non-verbal, typography, graphical and prepresentation skills), each subject is covered in considerable depth. This book should be on the office shelf of every manager who needs to communicate effectively.

        Munter's work clearly and concisely leads you through making your message effective. She gets to the heart of communicating: what form should it take, how to structure it, and how to execute it so that it has the best chance of achieving your purpose. In particular, I was helped immensely from her discussion about how to analyze your audience and choose the best strategy for relaying your message. She not only covers writing, but also presentations and speaking. To top it off, she includes advice about whitespace, word choice, effective sentence structures, outlining, and more. An all-around great book that every purposeful writer should own.

        The theme of this book is to fit every individual to a specific framework that the author claims proven. The result is robotic communicators. I personally believe that good communicators are those who brings out the best in themselves, creative and charismatic. This book advocates the other way around.

        I also feel skeptical doubt the author's communication skills. The book is incredibly dry, too organized, too structured. Don't buy this buy unless it is required to pass your MBA exam.

        This book is required for a communications class in my MBA program. It is excellent. Although it is very detailed, it is easy to read and to the point. The book itself is an excellent example of how to communicate in the business world.
