    Book Description

With essays by an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars, Dark Horizons focuses on the development of critical dystopia in science fiction at the end of the twentieth century. In these narratives of places more terrible than even the reality produced by the neo-conservative backlash of the 1980s and the neoliberal hegemony of the 1990s, utopian horizons stubbornly anticipate a different and more just world. The top-notch team of contributors explores this development in a variety of ways: by looking at questions of form, politics, the politics of form, and the form of politics. In a broader context, the essays connect their textual and theoretical analyses with historical developments such as September 11th, the rise and downturn of the global economy, and the growth of anti-capitalist movements.

      Book Description

While literary utopias depict an ideal society and reflect an optimistic belief in the triumph of humanity and government, dystopias present a society marked by suffering caused by human and political evils. This book offers a detailed study of several literary dystopias and analyzes them as social criticism. The volume begins with a discussion of utopias, dystopias, and social criticism. By drawing upon the theories of Freud, Nietzsche, and others, Booker sets a firm theoretical foundation for the literary explorations that follow. The chapters that come next discuss Zamyatin's We, Huxley's Brave New World, and Orwell's 1984 as social criticism of totalitarianism, Stalinism, the dangers of capitalism, and fascism. Later chapters consider dystopias after World War II, contemporary communist dystopias, and postmodernist dystopias in the West.

        Book Description

This volume examines a variety of utopian writing for children from the 18th century to the present day, defining and exploring this new genre in the field of children's literature. The original essays discuss thematic conventions and present detailed case studies of individual works. All address the pedagogical implications of work that challenges children to grapple with questions of perfect or wildly imperfect social organizations and their own autonomy. The book includes interviews with creative writers and the first bibliography of utopian fiction for children.

            Book Description

Dystopian literature is a potent vehicle for criticizing existing social conditions and political systems. While utopian literature portrays ideal worlds, dystopian literature depicts the flaws and failures of imaginative societies. Often these societies are related to utopias, and the dystopian writers have chosen to reveal shortcomings of those social systems previously considered ideal. This reference overviews dystopian theory and summarizes and analyzes numerous dystopian works. By reviewing the critical thought of particular dystopian theorists, the beginning of the volume provides a theoretical context for the remainder of the book. Because dystopian literature is so closely related to utopian writing, the reference profiles and discusses eight important utopian works. The rest of the book includes entries for numerous dystopian novels, plays, and films. Each entry summarizes the work and discusses dystopian themes. The entries include short bibliographies, with full bibliographic information provided at the end of the volume. This comprehensive guide covers the full period from Thomas More's Utopia to the present day.

4 out of 5 stars A great addition to a Vintage Paperback collection! :).......2006-12-11

This book has such great cover art and classic quotes on the cover:

"So strongly and movingly has Mr. Douglas portrayed these people that it has frequently been said of this strange and moving story that the people who read it are never quite the same again."

Seems to be a real "potboiler"! It is an attractive book with lots of nostalgia. :)

                        5 out of 5 stars Memorable.......2006-10-05

                        This book is beyond description.

Something everyone should read at least once in their lifetime.

Very few books, Fiction especially, leave the reader with a sense of purpose and a glimpse into the life lived a little more extrodinarily.

A common idea told in a fascinating way can put new energy into our lives and all the while showing us that there is more fufillment to be had if we stop looking at what we need and want and put more emphasis on the lives of others.

A timeless unforgetable adventure that will always be with you no matter how old you are.

And you will learn what Dr. Hudson meant when he said, I can't give it back to you, because I've used it up for myself.

                        5 out of 5 stars SPECTACULAR.......2006-06-03

This book is splendid. It is not a great composition in the literary sense. One doesn't read it with the thrill of experiencing dazzling artistry of words. Shakespeare it is not.

However, this is one of the best books I have ever read; and I have read it several times. It is the purest story of triumph of the human spirit. The most profound triumph is over self. This book explores the topic with dazzling brilliance.

Timeless, moving, and inspirational, this book is one you are sure to never, ever forget. It will stay with me until I die, and I can only hope to be half the man the protagonist is. I would loved to have met the author - he must have been extraordinary. I can think of no novel more worthy of my reading time.

However, I was looking for the title "The Magnificent Obsession" until I left out the "the" one day and found the book at Amazon. If you love helping people, this book is a must read.

                          Book Description

This book describes the background to Paul Ehrlich's immunological works and theories and delves into the substance of his experiments in great detail. By exploring these early developments in immunology, the book lays the foundation for modern concepts, providing immunologists, biomedical researchers, and students the context for the discoveries in their field.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Key to a Fulfilled Life........2007-05-31

Author Lloyd C. Douglas offers an extraordinary gift in this book -- the spiritual key to a fulfilled life. Together with the sequel, "Dr. Hudson's Secret Journal," Douglas uses the vehicle of compelling storytelling to describe a way to extend oneself outward and form an eternal connection with humankind. Douglas, a former Protestant minister who also gave us "The Robe" and "The Big Fisherman," explains how one's life can be transformed through the act of giving to others. I first read this book and its sequel when I was a young teenager. They have remained at the top of my favorites list ever since. Whether you're looking for an enjoyable novel, or something with deeper meaning, "Magnificent Obsession" will not disappoint you.

                          5 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Read!.......2006-02-27

This book shows us how we should all be living today - loving our neighbor, and doing good for the sake of doing good, rather than for the recognition. The good works we are able to accomplish multiply and become even more magnificent when the benefactor remains anonymous, and requests the recipient to "pass it on" - what a positive contribution to society!

It has frequently been said of this strange story that the people who read it are never quite the same again! Douglas at his best. A wonderful book!!

                            Book Description

The popularity of the sculptures of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is due in no small part to the evangelical efforts of the pre-eminent twentieth-century American collector B. Gerald Cantor. Featuring some of the artist's greatest masterpieces, together with many of his drawings, prints, photographs and memorabilia, this book chronicles how the Cantor collection of around 750 works by Rodin grew. Beautifully illustrated throughout, it reveals how one man's obsession provided the world with a hugely significant bequest of the work of one of the greatest sculptors of all time.

Provides a comprehensive overview of one of the world's most important Rodin collections
Offers new insights into the artist's working methods

It is always interesting to see what others are collecting. I would have liked to see more of the aquarium furniture that was shown on the front cover. I was more interested in seeing the collections than reading so much text.

                                5 out of 5 stars Worthwhile passions.......2001-12-30

A glorious celebration of twenty collectors and their passions. Peter Brenner's excellent color photos capture them with their lifes work. My favorite is Dorothy Twining Globus who collects (as she says) 'Everything'.

The Cade brothers go for anything Studebaker and that includes over thirty real cars. Kit Hinrichs loves the Stars and Stripes, his collection can be seen in the sumptuous book 'Long May She Wave'.

Author Tuchman's fascinating text details how each one pursued their dreams, I can identify with a lot of this because some years ago I managed to collect 450 radio station t-shirts (still got 'em too, email me with offers).

This book is very similar to Ellen Land-Webber's out-of-print photo essay 'The Passionate Collector'. If you really have the collecting bug check out 'The Collecting Book' by Ellen and Lewis Liman, 800 photos of collections and lots of practical information.

I wonder if anyone collects books about colectors? Hmmm...this could be the start of my new collection!

If you can stand waiting a while to get this book, it's definitely worth the wait! The collections featured are all similar in that they are exhaustive in scope, and many of them are extremely intriguing due to their subject matter. The only drawback to this book is that it's too short! It wets the appetite for the unusual and eccentric, but doesn't come close to satisfying you once you've started reading.

Bramson emphasizes the importance of seeking and really listening to the feedback you get from others without being defensive, since it often points to areas where you need to change or grow. He notes that many managers are not comfortable giving feedback directly, so they hint around the issues and hope the people under them will be able to read between the lines.

He also points out some additional pitfalls, such as what doing feels right in a situation may not be the best course of action, and that choosing behavior that moves us ahead does not come naturally.

An encouraging point is that we don't need to get rid of our bad habits, but we do need to modify or manage them to keep them from managing us. Bramson's model for image repair is very helpful, and for me was worth the price of the book.

If you are tired of tripping over the same old behaviors at work, try Bramson's prescriptions.

Not a lot new in this book. It focuses most on correcting really dysfunctional behavior, not on subtle defects.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to the Prevention of Self-Sabotage.......2005-03-16

Watching several people I admire repeatedly sabotage their careers by failing to recognize and fix the same recurring personality problems caused me to take a break from German-Jewish history and read this book. I have been an employer and an employee, both boss and bossed, and believe that we all can use a good (emphasize "good") self-help book now and then. This book enables the reader to pinpoint self-defeating behaviors and correct them, or at least control them.

In my experience, there are three categories of criticism. The first one is task-related, and your boss will almost always give it to you: "This presentation should be reorganized." "We need a better argument for ...." "Next time include slides on the overhead projector." The second category is personal, but easily fixable, and your boss will give it to you (perhaps with some trepidation): "A tube top is just not 'business casual.'" "You need to start being on time for the 7:00 am meetings." The third category is what your boss will not tell you until it's too late: "you turn people off," "you are too aggressive" or "you are too indecisive." The reason she won't is that these criticisms are of difficult-to-describe personality traits and the message is always uncomfortable to deliver.

Unfortunately, the problems that your boss will not discuss with you (until after you have lost that promotion or job) are the very problems that are the most serious and can have the biggest ramifications for your career. That's where this book comes in. It contains a step-by-step process for identifying your trouble spots and addressing them. If you're not brave enough to actually engage people in discussions about your flaws (as the book suggests), it contains several chapters on common personality problems and suggested substitute behaviors. It also contains a chapter on repairing your image, if it comes to that.

The book takes a non-judgmental approach, pointing out that many personality characteristics may be hereditary. Yet, that makes it no less important to address them. (For example, if you knew that you had a gene which predisposed you to getting lung cancer, wouldn't you be even more careful not to smoke?) I learned a great deal from this book. Since none of us is perfect, I would highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to catch and fix bad behaviors early on, before they can ruin your career.
