La crisis, a period of political and economic turmoil in Mexico that began in the late 1960s, spawned a new era in Mexican cinema. Known as el Nuevo Cine (the New Cinema), these films presented alienated characters caught in a painful transition period in which old family, gender, and social roles have ceased to function without being replaced by viable new ones. These are the films explored by Charles Ramírez Berg in Cinema of Solitude, the first book-length critical study of Mexican cinema in English. Berg discusses the major films and filmmakers of el Nuevo Cine in depth. He analyzes dozens of commercial movies, from popular comedies and adventures to award-winning films. Introductory chapters address the issue of mexicanidad (Mexican national identity) and outline Mexican history, the history of film as popular culture and as a leading national industry, and the ideological dynamics of Mexican cinema. In thematically arranged chapters, Berg investigates the images of women, men, and social structures portrayed in New Cinema films. He finds that women characters have begun to reject traditional stereotypes for more positive images, while male characters have grown ambiguous and undefined as machismo is abandoned. Other chapters trace the continuing marginalization of Indians in Mexican culture, the changes in male dominance within the family, and the disruptive social and economic effects caused by migration. This book, in all its revisions, has been in print for more than thirty-five years. It has been found very useful by students and general readers who are already well versed in tonal music systems and want a primer on the basic ideas behind the serial composition methods that grew up and matured during the 20th Century. The book says that it is an introduction to the music of Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern. While most of the musical examples are drawn from their music, examples from other composers such as Bartok, Babbit, Stravinsky, and others are also included.

Perle lays out some of the basic issues of organization that grew out of atonality and how the idea of sets or rows was used to provide order. He shows various kinds of serial organization including sets fewer than twelve tones, hexachords, and the full twelve tone set. He also does a great job in demonstrating the different ways composers implemented this organization principle. It is important to realize that the information here is really just what it says: an introduction. Composers have come up with many other kinds of implementations of the idea of serialization and sets. It is vital to keep in mind that there is no ordained way of composing with twelve tones. There are some basic postulates in the Schoenberg method, but no composer has to be bound by them other than by choosing to compose music that way.

Perle also shows the reader how composers use these rows and combine them in ways that create effects that are not a part of any of the rows including constructions that look like major and minor triads. Yes, your ear will pick them up quite readily, but the way the "move" is not tonal. However, they provide interesting color and a way for the composer to draw the ear to certain aspects of the composition.

There are also many other technical matters of the "standard" method of serialization that are not included here. But who would expect an introduction to be comprehensive?

A survey of pantonal music.......2001-05-27

Perle's book is considered a classic in the theory world, and well so. It gives a thorough analysis of representative works of not only Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern, but also of Stravinsky, Bartok, and Babbitt. I was able to learn from it many of the tools of serial music and their application in specific pieces. The world of serial composition is actually much broader than I had hitherto realized.

As a composer, I found this book helpful, but I would recommend Charles Wuorinen's SIMPLE COMPOSITION in addition.

My main problem with this book is Perle's consistent use of the word "atonal." This furthers the myth that there is such thing as "atonal music." First of all, serialist work is more accurately "pantonal;" it encompasses all tonalities, and implies all tonalities. Furthermore, it is a misleading term, as there is no music that uses no tones (all sounds have some frequency, and therefore some tone).

This edition is an improvement over an older one. The older edition, which I read, contained a section in the chapter on simultaneity which I thought was absolutely ridiculous. This edition omits the section.

As far as I can tell, George Perle's books are the only ones that really come to grips with atonality. Others are either 1) simplistic glosses, 2) pieces of propaganda, or 3) attempts to impress or intimidate the reader (so as to entrench their authors in academia). Having heard one of George Perle's piano sonatas on the radio the other day and once a string quartet of his in concert, I can testify that he is himself a first-rate composer, and isn't it better to read the works of one who has an artistic stake in his subject?

For a contrasting point of view, however, I refer you to--with certain reservations--"Milton Babbitt: Words About Music", edited by Stephen Dembski.

However, for a contrasting point of view, I also recommend--with reservations--"Milton Babbitt: Words about Music", edited by Stephen Dembski. Like George Perle, Milton Babbitt is a prominent serialist composer. As it happens, I'm not a particular fan of his music, and I think his analyses tend miss the substance of the music he analyzes, but he is an influential, articulate, and intelligent exponent worth hearing out.

Clear insight into a complex style........1997-12-23

Although I have not delved into an extensive study of books on this subject, Perle's "Serial Composition and Atonality" provides the reader with an easily approchable look into and often misunderstood art form. He covers the development of the Second Vienese Style from "free" atonality through more complex set structures using plenty of musical examples and "speaks" in a "normal" manner rather than trying to bog down the reader with a lot of complex technobabble (the subject is dry enough to begin with) that looses a person within the first sentence.

This is the most thorough book I have ever read on Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School. It very clearly leads the reader through the progression from tonal music to the twelve-tone system and demonstrates how this progression is a logical extension of the music that came before. There is also a great deal of analysis of almost all the works of Schoenberg, Berg & Webern.

As strategy gaming host for bellaonline.com, I have to read through quite a number of pitiful walkthroughs. This one is a great exception! The book is extremely well laid out, with clear, easy to use maps, tips and techniques. The instructions are all dead on. But best of all, the book isn't written assuming you're 2 years old. It's written with a fantastic style, with humor and knowledge all mixed together. I was extremely impressed, and this has stayed on my shelves while other books were tossed out long ago!

The ultamite game (of earlier times) deserves the ultamite guide. I find it hard to believe anyone would dislike a book with this quality and strategy. The maps show you where every single item is, how to get there, and what to do when your lost. It even shows the secrets. None of the other books include info on the ATOMIC EDITION, but this guide does. The people at Sybex should be very happy -- they've created a masterpiece.

Survival of the Savvy a Must Read for Executives.......2007-10-05

Seldman and Brandon have crafted an excellent guide to navigating today's increasingly more complicated corporate political landscape. Their focus on becoming politically aware while remaining in integrity clearly seperates this book from any other book I've read on this topic. The authors address all of the most prevalent attitudes regarding politics within organizations and they do it in a way that normalizes the readers viewpoint whatever it may be. They offer clear and concrete suggestions that should be helpful to any executive no matter what they're level or current political style.

I have already begun using some of the concepts and language I learned from reading Survival of the Savvy. My clients have all responded in an extremely positive manner. I highly recommend this book, to executives, executive coaches/consultants and to anyone else who may be curious about the part political savvy plays in today's corporate world.

Unfortunately unconvincing and without clear action steps........2007-09-25

Initially interesting, this book ends up being discouraging. It starts out with some solid concepts about corporate politics and integrity - but overall it does not deliver on those claims.

Not only is it unconvincing about its core premise - that you CAN "play" politics with high integrity - but it gives only general ideas and concepts with no clear action steps for the reader to try out.

I'm a firm believer in the reality of high-integrity politics, and so I had great hopes for this being a book I could recommend to my clients. Sadly, I think it makes much more of a case for politics being ugly and unfortunate than high-integrity and - yes - fun!

There are many others that are much better. This one is very skippable.

Like it or not, office politics is a reality in every organization, in every department, and on every team. As a leadership coach, I have successfully used this book with clients at all levels of an organization. This book has been extremely helpful with clients who saw politics as "slimy" to help them look at political savvy as something that can be exercised with integrity.
