    Book Description

Blending history and theory, Chinese Modernism in the Era of Reforms offers both a historical narrative and a critical analysis of the cultural visions and experiences of China’s post-Mao era. In this volume, Xudong Zhang rethinks Chinese modernism as a historical genre that arose in response to the historical experience of Chinese modernity rather than as an autonomous aesthetic movement. He identifies the ideologies of literary and cultural styles in the New Era (1979–1989) through a critical reading of the various “new waves” of Chinese literature, film, and intellectual discourse.
In examining the aesthetic and philosophical formulations of the New Era’s intellectual elites, Zhang first analyzes the intense cultural and intellectual debates, known as the “Great Cultural Discussion” or “Cultural Fever” that took place in Chinese urban centers in the mid- and late 1980s. Chinese literary modernism is then explored, specifically in relation to Deng Xiaoping’s sweeping reforms and with a focus on the changing literary sensibility and avant-garde writers such as Yu Hua, Ge Fei, and Su Tong. Lastly, Zhang looks at the the making of New Chinese Cinema and films such as Yellow Earth, Horse Thief, and King of the Children—films through which Fifth Generation filmmakers first developed a style independent from socialist realism. By tracing the origins and contemporary elaboration of the idea of Chinese modernism, Zhang identifies the discourse of modernism as one of the decisive formal articulations of the social dynamism and cultural possibilities of post-Mao China.
Capturing the historical experience and the cultural vision of China during a crucial decade in its emergence as a world power, Chinese Modernism in the Era of Reforms will interest students and scholars of modernism, Chinese literature and history, film studies, and cultural studies.

      Book Description

To view a film is to see another's seeing mediated by the technology and techniques of the camera. By manipulating the cinematic apparatus in unorthodox ways, avant-garde filmmakers challenge the standardized versions of seeing perpetuated by the dominant film industry and generate ways of seeing that are truer to actual human vision.
Beginning with the proposition that the images of cinema and vision derive from the same basic elements--light, movement, and time--Wees argues that cinematic apparatus and human visual apparatus have significant properties in common. For that reason they can be brought into a dynamic, creative relationship which the author calls the dialectic of eye and camera. The consequences of this relationship are what Wees explores.
Although previous studies have recognized the visual bias of avant-garde film, this is the first to place the visual aesthetics of avant-garde film in a long-standing, multidisciplinary discourse on vision, visuality, and art.

        Book Description

In detailing the relationship of three women filmmakers' lives and films to the changing institutions of the post-World War II era, Lauren Rabinovitz has created the first feminist social history of the North American avant-garde cinema.

At a time when there were few women directors in commercial films, the postwar avant-garde movement offered an opportunity. Rabinovitz argues that avant-garde cinema, open to women because of its marginal status in the art world, included women as filmmakers, organizers, and critics.

Focusing on Maya Deren, Shirley Clarke, and Joyce Wieland, Rabinovitz illustrates how women used bold physical images to enhance their work and how each provided entrÈe to her subversive art while remaining culturally acceptable. She combines archival materials with her own interviews to show how the women's labor and films, even their identities as women filmmakers, were produced, disseminated, and understood. With a new preface and an updated bibliography, Points of Resistance simultaneously demonstrates the avant-garde's importance as an organizational network for women filmmakers and the processes by which women remained marginal figures within that network.

5 out of 5 stars Rebuttal to Kirkus review........1998-01-25

It is difficult to determine where to begin addressing a review as contradictory and pointless as the one offered by Kirkus of Suarez's exciting new focus on kitsch, camp, and fetishism in the Gay Underground Cinema of the the 60's.

To begin with, Kirkus misses or entirely avoids recognizing that this "slightly new conception" of the history of this cinema is an immanently Queer one, fixing as it does on those aesthetic elements which even most theorists of the avant-garde would have preferred not to let out of the closet. The Kirkus review fails to acknowledge how and why Saurez's reassessment of this tradition bears upon the object of this inquiry-- why Peter Burger's notion of the avant-garde as a rejection of decadent aestheticism is particularly problematic for the queer underground-- why Clement Greenberg's derogation of kitsch cannot possibly account for this cinema-- how Theodor Adorno's strictly negative dialectic fails to record the more positive relations established between the avant-garde and mass culture.

Though Kirkus seems to regard the first fifty pages of Suarez's book as pointless, I see them as absolutely essential. Without the context of these earlier notions of the avant-garde, Suarez's formulations would seem to have come out of thin air-- devoid of any relation to those earlier discourses formed and informed by particular socia land ideological circumstances. Instead, Suarez not only offers a new account, but also reveals how and why a number of elements particularly important to the study of Smith, Anger, and Warhol have been systematically overlooked in the theory which precedes him. Ideas never come out of thin air; it is difficult to understand how the detailed framing of a discursive context could be a waste of time.

This rebuttal itself would be meaningless if the Kirkus review hadn't preceded it.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive review of Warhol's complicated legacy.......2004-09-11

Patrick S. Smith provides readers with the kind of intellectual delight that one usually finds only in literary criticism.

I read Smith's book a number of years ago and I am still piecing together Warhol's sublime mixture of Dada, abstract expressionism, neo-Catholicism, commercial art, "drugs", impressionism, post-realism and modernism/postmodernism.

A powerful analysis of the greatest artist in U.S. history.

            Book Description

The past thirty years have seen the proliferation of forms of independent cinema that challenge the conventions of mass-market commercial movies from within the movie theater. Avant-Garde Film examines fifteen of the most suggestive and useful films from this film tradition: No. 4 (Bottoms) by Yoko Ono, Wavelength by Michael Snow, Serene Velocity by Ernie Gehr, Print Generation by J. J. Murphy, Standard Gauge by Morgan Fisher, Zorns Lemma by Hollis Frampton, Riddles of the Sphinx by Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen, American Dreams by James Benning, The Ties that Bind by Su Friedrich, From the Pole to the Equator by Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi, The Carriage Trade by Warren Sonbert, Koyaanisqatsi by Godfrey Reggio, Naked Spaces - Living in the Round by Trinh T. Minh-ha, Journey from Berlin/1971 by Yvonne Rainer, The Journey by Peter Watkins. Through in-depth readings of these works, Scott MacDonald takes viewers on a critical circumnavigation of the conventions of movie going as seen by filmmakers who have rebelled against the conventions. MacDonald’s discussions do not merely analyse the films; they provide a useful, accessible, jargon-free critical apparatus for viewing avant-garde film and communicate the author’s pleasure in exploring ‘impenetrable’ works.

            Book Description

One of the finest achievements of Western culture is its brilliant heritage of classical music. A Gift of Music looks at the lives of the greatest composers who have given us this heritage, and especially at how their music was shaped by their beliefs.

The result is a remarkable and inspiring book, showing the importance of Christian faith for many composers, and the effect of this upon their music. But it also shows how the lack of faith has brought profound change in the meaning and form of contemporary music.

Thus A Gift of Music seeks to open up a whole new world of music--to encourage listening to the finest compositions with new understanding and pleasure, and to stretch our ears and imaginations. It is a book which will be greatly appreciated by those who already love classical music, and by others who want to explore this delightful world for the first time.

"I found The Gift of Music hard to lay down until I had read it from cover to cover. I feel this book is a must." --Jerome Hines, Metropolitan Opera Company

"Reading about these great composers has been most inspiring to me. This is a book to read and enjoy." --George Beverly Shea, renowned soloist

"There will be no one who will not find stimulating insights [in The Gift of Music]... I look for this book to open the doors to a new affirmation of life in the area of music." --Francis A. Schaeffer, founder, L'Abri Fellowship

"The most valuable contribution of The Gift of Music is the way the authors integrate the lives, philosophies, and music of these great composers. It is their discussion of the cross-pollination of thought and the interaction of one composer and artist with another. This approach makes the men come alive and places the reader in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as observers, not historians.... Whether readers are new to classical music or graduates of a classical music program, they will find the book a good resource and an excellent overview of the development of musical thought." -- Contemporary Christian

"[The authors'] joyous enthusiasm... should serve to ignite the curiosity of many readers and lure them on to sample more liberally the magnificent sound structures of Bach and Handel, Haydn and Mozart--not to mention both their forerunners and their heirs." -- Christianity Today

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book to explore the great composers.......2006-02-13

This is a superbly written book that contains 36 intriguing biographies and profiles of some of the great composers: from Baroque masters like Vivaldi and Bach ... through the pioneers of Classicism like Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven ... to the Romantic-era greats like Debussy and Liszt ... up to modern composers like Prokofiev and Bartok. The essays are crisp and flow like a good novel without getting bogged down in musicology terms (so good for young students and non-musical readers). Also their occassional comparisons through philosophy, art and Christian perspective makes for a deeper experience versus a overly "dry," academic treatment of mere dates and milestones. I have come to really appreciate this book's depth and have to admit this humble paperback is probably my favorite reference for studying a new composer (Schonberg's legendary "Lives of the Great Composers" being the other).

It would help to first say what this book is NOT: (1) A complete survey of the history of classical music, (2) A book on music theory or analysis of major works, (3) a presentation of ALL musical styles like Jazz, Pop, country etc. (4) A book ONLY about composers who were of Christian faith. Rather, the focus is on a sampling of the most famous composers of "classical music." Their lives and music are presented in factual, historical and non-judgmental way with the clear emphasis being on the gift of music they left the world. There are some references as to how their Christian faith influenced their music - which some will appreciate and others not. However, if your primary interest is the spiritual aspect of these men, then Patrick Kavanaugh's book, "The Spiritual Lives of the Great Composers," would be a better choice. But, where Kavanaugh offers more specific insights of the composers' spiritual lives (often quoted from letters written), authors Smith and Carlson in this book give a broader, more general overview of these composer's lives and most significant music that changed the world. Through their biographies and insights, Smith and Carlson show "people of faith" how purely instrumental music like classical music can be truly "Christian" and "spiritual" without any overt reference to diety (like in a church hymn). In doing so they show how classical music is a language not unlike how nature or the heavens speaks to us in their magnificance and unfathomable glory.

In common for both authors are musical academic backgrounds and working with the L'Abri Fellowship in Switzerland - a Christian center promoting the study and appreciation of music, philosophy and the arts. In the preface, the authors state their goal of this book: "There are many things in the Christian world which cause us to be sad. One of these is that for many classical music is a complete vacuum. This robs individual Christians and their children of one of the very rich areas of joy in this world. Most of all the purpose of this book is to encourage listening to the finest music with understanding and pleasure, and to stretch one's ears and imagination. The more we acquaint ourselves with that which is truly great and beautiful, the more we will dislike and turn away from that which is shallow and ugly."

If you have never listened to much classical music or casually studied its jewels or great composers, then this book is an ideal guide to grow in one's "understanding and pleasure" of such music. I started such a journey into the wonders of classical music over two years ago, and it has truly been one of the most personally rewarding things I have done - and one that will stay with me for decades (as classical music doesn't quite ever go out of style). So, I think the authors are right when they conclude the pursuit of the arts and the finest, most enduring music are part of a healthy, whole and - dare we say - enriching spiritual life. Even getting a couple of low-cost CD's of Bach and Mozart and just reading the chapter on these composers to start will go a long way ... and possibly begin a lifetime exploration and enjoyment of the gift these great composers left the world.

            5 out of 5 stars I can't put it down!.......2002-06-07

I greatly appreciate this book--it's a wonderful introduction to famous composers, plus a valuable resource for Christians who want to start or add to their collection of GOOD Christian music. Be a counter-cultural Christian--toss out the CCM and fire up Schutz, Bach, Handel, and the rest! Your mind and spirit (not to mention your neighbors) will thank you for it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Source for Homeschool Music Education.......2000-08-28

This book is complete with each classical music composer, history of the life and works of music. It is written to aide people in historical facts of the composer, facts that are not normally shared in education. For example, many of the composers had a deep Christian influence in their music, and wrote for the Glory of God and stated so on origional music sheets. The book can be used for a complete classical music history education from early ages all the way up to senior high students. This is the only book needed for music education. It works extremely well in tying in facts in all areas of history. It is very well put together and informative.

John Bollinger is a giant in today’s trading community. His Bollinger Bands sharpen the sensitivity of fixed indicators, allowing them to more precisely reflect a market’s volatility. By more accurately indicating the existing market environment, they are seen by many as today’s standard—and most reliable—tool for plotting expected price action.

Now, in Bollinger on Bollinger Bands, Bollinger himself explains how to use this extraordinary technique to compare price and indicator action and make sound, sensible, and profitable trading decisions.

Concise, straightforward, and filled with instructive charts and graphs, this remarkable book will be essential reading for all serious traders, regardless of market. Bollinger includes his simple system for implementation, and techniques for combining bands and indicators.

As a beginning trader, the concept of Trendlines, Stochastics, MACD, RSI, Moving Averages (Weighted, Exponential, Simple) can begin to all blend together. And of course, if you are paper trading, or even actually trading, then your Charting software has the capability to show the Bollinger Bands to help you make your trading decisions. John Bollinger does perhaps the BEST job of all the books I have read on nailing for the reader the statistical value of each type of 'methodology' along with which types of methodolgies are 'co-linear' in that they provide you with the same information. He shows you the power and value of Bollinger bands OVER other moving average technologies, and finally, helps you get a handle how to trade. He is direct, clear, and very helpful in conveying a broad and deep subject, along with also keeping the reading interesting. This book is not a beginners book. You should either already have lots of trading experience OR have read a number of books on trading. Many of his examples are for Stock Traders, but he also shows the power of Bollinger Bands in Commodities and Futures. I highly recommend this book for the beginner who is 'educating' himeself through books and has a number of books under his belt, OR for someone who is doing trading already, and wants to improve their game.

"Bollinger on Bollinger Bands" is a through explanation of the theory behind the analysis tool, and means for increasing its value. Examples are given in both independent use of the tool and for its use in concert with other measures. Codependent variables are discussed and reasonable cautions are stated. Multiple trading systems are discussed as well.

However, I was sorely disappointed that the book made reference to "free" tools on the internet. Most of these were available only for a 30-day trial pre-purchase, and without stating the purchase price--before signing up for the trial. It was not possible to evaluate the value of the proposed trading methodologies by using what was stated to be "free" access. I felt mis-lead, at best.

This is not a book for a beginner in stock technical analysis. It pre-supposed knowledge of several acronyms, which are sometimes explained later in the text (to be fair). It would have made a better read had all acronymns been defined and explained on their first occurence.

I still found this to be a valuable text on the derivation and logic behind Bollinger Bands, and for that reason alone have gien it a relatively high rating. But don't expect to buy the book and directly apply it to trading without purchasing or developing some additional software, or in the alternative, doing a lot of pencil and paper work.

I forced myself to read throughout this book. The closely relavant information about Bollinger bands in this book is something like 10 to 15 pages, some of can be found in standard TA books. I believe the Author should have written a TA book and included Bollinger bands as its one chapter. It is so boring to read a book made of by extending a chapter of it to a book.

5 out of 5 stars A major contribution to technical analysis.......2006-08-21

Mr. Bollinger's book is unusual as books on technical analysis go. No promises of instant wealth here: rather, at the outset, Bollinger tells the reader that the marketplace is an uncertain arena. His view is that the old dictum "Buy low, sell high," is best viewed in relative terms, and he draws our attention to others who have seen the world somewhat similarly, such as Albert Einstein and Oliver Wendell Holmes. The author's stated "other view" is that "Rational Analysis" is the most (dare I say it?) rational way to approach investing. Rational Analysis, in this context, is the blending of fundamental analysis - balance sheets, product lines and such for stocks or carry-over stocks and acres planted for grains, for instance - with technical analysis. Mr. Bollinger has promised us another book dealing with Rational Analysis, and in this book he focuses entirely on the technical side.

The book has a brief introduction to charting to assure that there is someplace to look to understand terminology. Of course, there is an appendix which also sets for meanings for technical and charting terms. Along with this, the author provides us with a short history of technical analysis, an unusual feature. From here he moves into his trademark work, Bollinger Bands, how to construct them and how to use them and how to avoid misusing them which can result in having them abuse you. I should say that about fifteen years ago, I found out how thoroughly one can be bitten by misuse of Bollinger Bands - and it was my own wallet that shrank.

An advanced section, which is, indeed, advanced, is provided in which the author gives his thoughts for altering his work to make it fit the reader's perspective. How to integrate the information provided by B Bands and by his less well-known but quite useful "other creation," %b, into or in with other technical indicators. Also provided are ways to analyze your own trading techniques in order to avoid the trap of using the same data seventeen (my number) different ways that all come up with the same result - which really means that you have only one indicator, not seventeen.

Perhaps Mr. Bollinger's most sage, non-technical analytic advice is put forth early in the book. He tells the reader not to worry about having everyone else use "the system," no matter what the system is, because every individual will use it differently. Thus 1,000 people using The System will trade as if there were 1,000 different systems. And most critically, the reader is advised to devise his own system, to take pieces from systems here and their, and tweak them so that each person has a system that fits his own personality. If YOU are not comfortable with your system, YOU won't be able to trade it effectively. There is much good advice and explication of uses of statistics in general and Bollinger Bands in particular in this book. But if the only thing you take away from the book is the above bit of advice, and if you take it to heart, you'll be richly rewarded in the marketplace. On a personal note, I already used three band sets, BBands one of them; I have now added %b to my arsenal. To my surprise, it does not duplicate any of my other 10 indicators.

This is a book to be thoroughly digested by every trader. While Bollinger Bands are in the everyday parlance of traders now, 20 years ago they were a ground breaking concept. There are other ways to compute volatility, but all that I have seen actually work better when combined with Bollinger Bands and/or its close relative, %b. Although some reviews here dismiss this book lightly, it is seminal and deep. My second reading found important details that I did not notice first time through. I expect I'll find more useful detail when next I reread the book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Measuring Volatility.......2006-07-01

It is interesting how things all of a sudden things come together in a Martin Gardner ah-hah! sort of moment. (I wish I had those more often). Anyway, I was developing a trading strategy and was being stymied with coming up with a method for filtering side-ways movements from trending movements. It suddenly dawned on me that this is what volatility is all about. I've been reading much on options and how volatility is an integral part of option trading. There was just so much to assimilate in analyzing options that the simple truth escaped me. High volatility begats low volatility and low volatility begats high volatility. (Among other things) Low volatility leading to high volatility forms the basis for Bollinger's Squeeze Play, otherwise known as the Volatility Breakout Trade. The Squeeze Play is one of three methods Bollinger has cooked up to show the benefits of Bollinger Band utilization.

What it all boils down to is that volatility is basically a study on standard deviation. By using standard deviation bands and calculating differences between them, Bollinger has defined a flexible set of indicators that can be used not only on tradeable instruments, but as component parts of other indicators.

Bollinger continually stresses that Bollinger Bands should not be used independently. The signals they generate should always be confirmed with other indicators. Bollinger has a preference for volume based indicators, which he says tend to lead the market.

Another interesting aspect of the book has to do with pattern matching. I've been wondering how one would generate computer algorithms to detect trading patterns such as the head & shoulders pattern. A few key observations have clarified the picture for me as to defining some ways to proceed. The book proceeds with detailing about 32 different patterns that originated with Arthur Merrill.

It is interesting to note that there is enough material surrounding Bollinger Bands that a whole book can be written regarding the topic. So, by playing around with various combinations of volatility analysis, pattern matching, and volume confirmation, there is no end of possibilities for trading system development.

                    Book Description

Bollinger Bands have been a popular method of technical analysis for several years, however there has never been any comprehensive reference on the subject available. The discussion and treatment of Bollinger Bands has been either "shortchange" or omitted in recent books, which offer guidance in the interpretation and usage of technical stuties and indicators, such as Elder's "Trading For a Living" (only 2 pages) and Pring's "On Market Momentum" (omitted). Bollinger Bands are included in many different software packabes, but the manuals give little in-depth guidance on usage and interpretation.

The author worked closely with John Bollinger to be able to help the reader increase his knowledge of Bollinger Bands, and their effective and proper usage.

John Bollinger has asked the publisher to remove this booklet from distribution. It was published in 1994 and is outdated and useless. When John did the research for his 2001 book "Bollinger on Bollinger Bands" (available at Amazon) he developed new guidelines for using his Bands that make this 28 page booklet obsolete. If you are interested in Bollinger Bands read John Bollinger's 288 page book. It is a thorough and comprehensive explanation of Bollinger Bands. It includes three trading approaches based on Bollinger Bands and which indicators to use with the bands for confirmation.Bollinger on Bollinger Bands

John B is an affable, well-intentioned individual but to pass this work off as something original or valuable is just not right. I am a part-time trader but voracious reader. When my real estate business slows down which is not as frequent as in the past, I try to read as much as possible about mathematics and markets. Many years ago I developed ideas that were precursors to John's writings. I too initially believed them to be valuable but when I tried to apply them to the markets I failed miserably. Save yourself some money and avoid these losing methods. Yes, I know as I am a highly respected market technician and I have seen just about everything written on this topic in the marketplace. My mathematics and real estate backgrounds have given me a perspective that these market hucksters lack. I am not perfect but I do know that my contributions to the investment industry is much greater than most of the highly visible promoters. Besides me, there are a few people who have done ground-breaking work, such as Kent Caloun. Bruce Bibcock, and Chuck Lindsay. These guys know math and I like their work. You may perceive my notion of being an expert as egotistical but I consider it to be well grounded in my knowledge and experience.
