Product Description

“Thanks for the Memory.” “Swinging on a Star.” “The Way You Look Tonight.” Three great and popular standards of the American songbook—and all three won Oscars for best song. But who wrote these songs? What movies were they written for? Which stars introduced them? In the 25 years covered by this fascinating book, 160 songs were nominated for Academy Awards. Some are well known, but many are nearly forgotten. They deserve more lasting recognition. Best Songs of the Movies tells the stories behind all these songs, year by year. After announcing the nominated songs, the text describes the way each song was presented and performed, critiques the lyrics and melody, and provides appropriate historical and biographical insights. One appendix presents brief biographies of all the lyricists and composers responsible for these songs; another lists the Oscar-nominated and winning songs from 1959 through 2003. A bibliography and index complete the volume.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Book on Classic Movie Songs.......2006-04-26

I just recently obtained this book. It is quite fun and most informative. I am choosing to read this book in random order. In other words, I am randomly selecting various years and songs that are most interesting to me, and am reading it in that manner. Mr. Funnell's book really succeeds on two fundamental levels. On the one hand it is a genuinely informative, insightful, and probative study of a vitally importart body of American music. I believe that , in time, it will be regarded as one of the essential books on this topic. Yet, as valuable as the book is to the study of this important sub-genre of the American Songbook, it never bogs down into the pseduo-intellectual type of rhetoric that unfortunately typifies a lot of "serious" works on popular culture. "Best Songs of the Movies" is an engaging and lively book. This is just the sort of book that prompts one to want to curl up in a comfy chair , put on a cd of "That's Entertainment" or other suitable movie musical compilation, and read through the vaious years and songs profiled in the book. By the way, I especially appreciate Appendix 1, which provides brief capsule bios on the songwriters. Of course, we know to expect to see Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Harry Warren, etc. However, it is also nice to see such lesser lights as Ralph Freed, Johnny Marvin, and Allie Wrubel sharing space with the aforementioned luminaries.
In sum, this is one of the best books on American music and American movies to reach publication in quite some time.

5 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Guide to Popular Music .......2005-08-29

`Best Songs of the Movies' is a superbly written reference on popular music. It is full of fascinating, detailed information and insightful comments about the songs nominated for the Oscar in the first 25 years of the award.

I found this `page-turner' very hard to put down. It's wonderful to dip into, and it will settle any argument you may have about the great songs from the movies. It is full of information that, up until now, was not easily accessible. For example, I learned from 'Best Songs' that there were two songs called `Linda'. I was intrigued to learn about the Oscar nominated `other Linda' and the movie in which it appeared. I challenge you to sing this song!

It seems there's not much interest in the Best Song Oscars these days but this book makes it clear that this was not always so. The fascinating introduction shows the historical process by which changes in popular music have led to a decline in the significance of the Best Song Oscar.

It's very clear that the author has meticulously researched the subject. The book has a very attractive design with well-chosen stills from many of the movies discussed. The Appendix, giving biographical details on all the songwriters mentioned in the book, is especially valuable.

'Best Songs of the Movies' is a delight to dip into and an indispensable guide for movie buffs and anyone who has any interest in American popular music. If you want to impress your friends with your comprehensive knowledge of popular music, you should get `Best Songs of the Movies' (but, don't tell them about the book!).

"The Ombledroom, the Posby, the Quingawaga, and the Raitch are but a few of the strangely engaging creatures that inhabit the world of Edward Gorey's Utter Zoo Alphabet. Taken from Gorey's book of the same title, these twenty-six dark, delightful drawings, one for each letter of the alphabet, lure you, as only Edward Gorey's work can, into an animal kingdom never before encountered in the ordinary world. 26 black-and-white reproductions.

3 out of 5 stars An Edward Gorey Zoo.......1999-09-19

This book might have been a book from a small English town's zoo at the turn of the century, but now it has been misplaced to the 20th century. Delicious!

5 out of 5 stars Not as Macabre as Gashlycrumb Tinies, but just as funny........1999-04-27

As if the cleverly worded lymerics weren't enough, Gorey's illustrations are whimsical and expressive. Together the art and the poetry will have you laughing out loud. The only problem is deciding whether or not to share the humor with friends. I can't bring myself to use the pages as postcards.

                      Book Description

The primary objective of this new book is to provide a comprehensive reference for those who work in a service industry setting. Unlike Design for Six Sigma a Roadmap for Product Development, this new book will address the 5 leading issues in the service industry, which are customer satisfaction, cost reduction, value improvement, change management and process performance measurements.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must for any service large or small.......2006-03-08

This is a great book which tackles most of the difficult issues confronting service organizations (as opposed to manufacturing) as they strive for excellence.

As a key player in the field of Process Management I am keenly aware of the cause of failure for most service businesses. The primary defect in in many service businesses is that they often lack Customer Focus.

This book brings the issue of customer focus onto center stage by discussing the concepts of value as the core basis for successful brand development. In addition to very good philosophical discussions the book also provides several useful tools such as TRIZ and Service Process Management that are essential for DFSS deployment in a service environment. The book also has good examples that illustrate application of the tools. It would be great if several complete case studies can be provided in a future edition.

                      4 out of 5 stars very good.......2006-02-03

very good book and well written however it has only theory and not calculations of using six sigma to improve.

Good for those new to six sigma who want to find out how six sigma can help their organisations.

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide.......2005-07-03

As a former business manager and a current marketing executive, I've had extensive experience in various sectors of the service industry. What makes customers come back? What puts a brand name that everyone recognizes on a product or service? Starbucks doesn't serve a radically different product from a no-name coffeeshop, but it takes quite a bit of market savvy and good business management for success in the service industry. This book gives the answers for success in three most important aspects of this industry: consistently good quality of products/services, efficient management of the delivery process, and positive customer/provider interactions. It's not the backing of a rich uncle and the hiring of supermodels to film commercials that distinguishes the best from the mediocre, it's correct management and good service methods. Out of all the books I've read on the topic, this is certainly one of the best.

                      Book Description

A roadmap to consistent, high-quality service for any organization

A service is typically something created to serve a paying customer, whether internal or external. Some services consist of several processes linked together while others consist of a single process.

This book introduces Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), an easy-to-master, yet highly effective data-driven method that prevents defects in any type of service process. The particular focus of this publication is service DFSS, which leads to what the authors term "a whole quality business," one that takes a proactive stance and gets things right the first time. Not only does the whole quality business produce a high-quality product and offer high-quality services, but it also operates at lower cost and higher efficiency, throughout the entire life cycle, than its competitors because all the links in the supply chain are optimized.

Following a detailed overview that sets forth the basic premise and key concepts of service DFSS, the authors offer all the information and tools needed to take advantage of service DFSS within their own organizations, including:
                      * Clear and in-depth coverage of the philosophical, organizational, and technical aspects of service DFSS
                      * Step-by-step roadmap of the entire service DFSS deployment and execution process
                      * Full discussions of all the key methods involved in service DFSS, including axiomatic design, design for X, the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ), transfer function, design scorecards, and Taguchi's method
                      * Practical, illustrative examples that demonstrate how the theory is put into practice
                      * Assistance in developing the necessary skills in applying DFSS in organizational settings

Problems and their solutions are provided at the end of each chapter to help readers grasp the key concepts they need to move forward in the text. Acclaro DFSS Light(r), a Java-based software package that implements axiomatic design processes discussed in Chapter Eight, is available for download from an accompanying Wiley ftp site. Acclaro DFSS Light(r) is a software product of Axiomatic Design Solutions, Inc.

This book is ideal as a reference to service DFSS for corporate executives, quality control managers, and process engineers, or as a complete training manual for DFSS teams. It is also a superior textbook for graduate students in management, operations, and quality assurance.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great Reference!.......2006-02-23

Great reference for Service Design for Six Sigma. Dr El-Haik and Mr. Roy have done a beautiful job of clearly outlining the methodology for DFSS while diving in depth into the critical tools. This is a must have for those who are doing DFSS for service applications.

5 out of 5 stars James Wasiloff's Perspectives on this Important New Text.......2005-10-27

Dr. Basem El-Haik and Dave Roy have delivered a tremendous research effort that will support the successful implementation of service focused DFSS for years to come. The book is organized into seventeen well structured chapters. The usual collection of references may also be used to gather source materials for additional study. This work is an extensive collection of topics relevant to service design and design optimization and forms an excellent referential basis for DFSS endeavors. The text is easy to read and understand and contains many examples for conceptreinforcement. An understanding of calculus and matrix math, while not a prerequisite, will be very helpful for certain sections of the book.
Congratulations to the authors for their excellent reference work on the science of design. It appears that this text is the culmination and integration of several important areas of research. The integration of the emerging tool called "Axiomatic Design" into most of the topics is a highlight of the text. El-Haik and Roy have published concepts that are unique to service design. I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about preemptive design and the integration of various design methodologies. I have not dsicovered such a comprehensive book for service design of six sigma. I started using this book for advanced experimental design and taguchi methods, but ultimately ended up understanding the complete roadmap for design of six sigma. The systems approach allows an enthusiast reader to start anywhere, without having to spend time refering back to earlier chapters. The relatively newer trends as TRIZ and axiomatic design have also been nicely dealt with.
Overall, this is a very nice and easy read book, with excellent and well defined examples. A must for everyone who wants a quick refresher on the design principles of six sigma.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read!!!! Hands on ..........2005-10-24

This is one of the first Six Sigma books that provides a solid roadmap for Process Design. Good examples, limited jargon, solid tools, well written. I would highly recommed it to anybody involved in a process design.

                      5 out of 5 stars VP Engineering.......2005-10-08

Whether you are new to Six Sigma or are a seasoned Six Sigma Black Belt this book is a must read. The power of applying Design for Six Sigma in the Services arena can not be overstated where tangible results can be realized if Service products are designed that delight the end customer. This book does a great job presenting an easy to follow Service DFSS roadmap that introduces the powerful Six Sigma tools that will help ensure that a robust end product is designed. Also, struggle no more with Quality Function Deployment (QFD) as this book does a superb job of breaking it down and providing succinct instruction on how to get it right. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars You get the whole roadmap.......2005-10-04

This is a great reference book for DFSS principles in a transactional or service environment. The authors stay true to their focus on transactional processes and provide practical examples to guide the reader through the traditional tools such as QFD, TRIZ, Design Scorecards and DOE. They also manage to easily integrate Lean tools such as Value Stream Mapping and Waste Elimination into the overall process. It doesn't feel like a re-hashing of shop floor lean with the word "office" inserted in from time to time. The focus really is on defining the customers and the design challenges in a service/back office setting. Beyond the tools, there is also some great reference material for the entire roadmap of establishing a program including deployment strategies, training, and resource planning.
