This engaging, deeply researched study provides the richest and most nuanced picture we have to date of cinema--both movies and movie-going--in the early 1910s. At the same time, it makes clear the profound relationship between early cinema and the construction of a national identity in this important transitional period in the United States. Richard Abel looks closely at sensational melodramas, including westerns (cowboy, cowboy-girl, and Indian pictures), Civil War films (especially girl-spy films), detective films, and animal pictures--all popular genres of the day that have received little critical attention. He simultaneously analyzes film distribution and exhibition practices in order to reconstruct a context for understanding moviegoing at a time when American cities were coming to grips with new groups of immigrants and women working outside the home. Drawing from a wealth of research in archive prints, the trade press, fan magazines, newspaper advertising, reviews, and syndicated columns--the latter of which highlight the importance of the emerging star system--Abel sheds new light on the history of the film industry, on working-class and immigrant culture at the turn of the century, and on the process of imaging a national community.

Raz Yosef explores Israeli cinema's role in the creation of national identity and the complex ways the marginalization of queerness became necessary to that goal. Zionism was not only a political and ideological program but also a sexual one. The liberation of Jews and creation of a new nation were closely intertwined with a longing for the redemption and normalization of the Jewish male body. That body had to be rescued from anti-Semitic, scientific-medical discourse associating it with disease, madness, degeneracy, sexual perversity, and femininity—even with homosexuality. The Zionist movement was intent on transforming the very nature of European Jewish masculinity as it had existed in the diaspora. Zionist/Israeli films expressed this desire through visual and narrative tropes, enforcing the image of the hypermasculine, colonialist-explorer and militaristic nation-builder, an image dependent on the homophobic repudiation of the "feminine" within men.
The creation of a new heterosexual Jewish man was further intertwined with attitudes on the breeding of children, bodily hygiene, racial improvement, and Orientalist perspectives—which associated the East, and especially Eastern bodies, with unsanitary practices, plagues, disease, and sexual perversity. By stigmatizing Israel's Eastern populations as agents of death and degeneration, Zionism created internal biologized enemies, against whom the Zionist society had to defend itself. In the name of securing the life and reproduction of the new Ashkenazi Jewry, Israeli society discriminated against both its internal enemies, the Palestinians, and its own citizens, the Mizrahim (Oriental Jews).
Yosef's critique of the construction of masculinities and queerness in Israeli cinema and culture also serves as a model for the investigation of the role of male sexuality within national culture in general.

Written by many leading scholars in the field,Theorizing National Cinema is a major contribution to work on national cinemas. It addresses the knotty and complex relationship between cinema and national identity, showing that the nationality of a cinema production company, and of the films it made, have not always been seen as pertinent.
The volume reviews and rethinks the concept of national cinema in an age of globalization, and goes on to chart the parallel developments of national film industries and the idea of the nation state in countries as diverse as Japan, South Korea, Russia, France, and Italy. The issue of a "national cinema" for nation states of contested status, with disputed borders or displaced peoples, is discussed in relation to filmmaking in Taiwan, Ireland, and Palestine. The contributors also consider the future of national cinema in an age of transnational cultural flows, exploring issues of national identity and cinema in Latin America, Asia, the Middle-East, India, Africa and Europe.
Theorizing National Cinema also includes a valuable bibliography of works on national cinema.

Only once in cinema history have imported films dominated the American market: during the nickelodeon era in the early years of the twentieth century, when the Pathé company's "Red Rooster" films could be found "everywhere." Through extensive original research, Richard Abel demonstrates how crucial French films were in making "going to the movies" popular in the United States, first in vaudeville houses and then in nickelodeons.
Abel then deftly exposes the consequences of that popularity. He shows how, in the midst of fears about mass immigration and concern that women and children (many of them immigrants) were the principal audience for moving pictures, the nickelodeon became a contested site of Americanization. Pathé's Red Rooster films came to be defined as dangerously "foreign" and "alien" and even "feminine" (especially in relation to "American" subjects like westerns). Their impact was thwarted, and they were nearly excluded from the market, all in order to ensure that the American cinema would be truly American.
The Red Rooster Scare offers a revealing and readable cultural history of American cinema's nationalization, by one of the most distinguished historians of early cinema.

Almost every page of this book has a quote that just strikes so incredibly true. Discussing as wide a variety of topics as corporate media censorship, the Iraq war and opposition to it, and American foreign policy, this book will give hope to those who feel isolated in their anger and hopelessness. Almost every page is cold water dumped on the faces of those who have never looked for the truth, who have never questioned. Read this. Read this and escape the propoganda of the newspapers and televisions stations owned by massive corporations with their own interests in mind. Even if you fully support the Iraq war, read this and take a look at the other side. It may shock you but it will definetly challenge you to expand your mind. For those who feel insignificant against a corporate dictatorship, this book offers hope. There are others and they have important things to say to us. Buy and read, and always hunt for the truth wherever it may be found because truth and understanding are the path to peace.

Excellent guide. No question. The only flaw (reason for 4 stars and not 5) is the secret tokens. The guide writer isn't very specific on the token locations. (I.E. behind the building by the trash can).....Where? There are SEVERAL of those locations. Other than that, very helpful on the challenges (tells you tips on how to improve) and missions. a Good buy (not excellent because of the secret token descriptions)

This Guide is very helpful to a person who is bad at games. It does a step-by-step walkthrough of the game. Has a poster of the game, and map that tells were each tokens and markers are! This guide like many is unnecessary for this game, but it is extremely helpful if you want to master everything in it. The maps are extremely helpful and help keep you oriented on your track across New York. Boss strategies are nicely detailed for those challenged by them. Every time challenge, pizza mission, and Mary Jane mission are detailed in the book to help you get your tasks done without trouble shooting yourself for hours. This is a nice strategy guide and it's well organized. Bradygames does another good job. If you'd like help mastering the game this works as an excellant guide to keep you from having to run back and forth online for information and the pictures go a long way to helping you in your tasks. Online text guides can be a bit confusing.

The Book Spiderman written by Phillip Marcus was an enjoyable, touching, and action filled story. I, myself do not read alot, but this specific book kept me interested. The characters in this book are well written. Through this story line a person can get a good look at a child that was teased and picked on until he was bitten by a radioactive spider. Now this character Peter Parker, known as spiderman, has superhuman, spiderlike powers along with incredible agility and strength. For instance he can stick to vertical walls, jump any height, width, or depth, and climb anything that gets in his way. Along with his powers he falls in love with a damsil in distress waiting for him to rescue her. Mary Jane Watson, a spunky and lovable character, is the perfect match for Spiderman.Throughout the story spiderman's love for her grows, but at the end their relationship takes an intersting turn you do not want to miss. Not only was the book good, it also followed most of the original comic books by Stan Lee and Steve Pitko. I would recomend this book to any student, who is not real interested in books, because it could change their opinion.

where is the fifth johnny storm race???.......2007-03-31
I bought this book hoping that it would help me find the hidden items that I just could not seem to find on my own and it did just that However when it started walking me through the races I discovered a problem. THIS BOOK IS INCOMPLETE!!!! All I needed was to beat Johnny Storm in the race around Manhattan and wouldn't you know it As far as this book is concerned that paticular race dosen't seem to exist. So if you are looking for 100% game completion don't bother with this book. However if all you want is the cheats and the location of all the bonus tokens by all means by this book.

More "what" than "how".......2007-02-09
Susan Annunzio and her research associates studied about 3,000 people who belonged to high performance work groups in dozens of different companies. What they learned is shared in this book. The core concept of this book is to spread high performance through an organization by identifying its high-performing workgroups - examine their environment -- and then share their "secrets." The book's premise is that success will then be contagious and "spread" throughout the entire organization.
What is required? First, "value people." I agree. However, in any organization, some people are more valuable than are others. The challenge is to get each person's strengths in proper alignment with the results that person is expected to produce. Next, "optimize critical thinking" and again I agree. However, some people's critical thinking skills (e.g. problem solving) are stronger than others'. The challenge is to identify those with the strongest skills and then locate them where those skills are most needed. Finally, "seize opportunities" and once again I agree. However, some positions offer greater opportunities to improve performance than do others. The challenge is to select those areas in which improvement will be of greatest value to the organization and then assign to those areas the people who are best qualified (in terms of knowledge, skills, temperament, etc.) to achieve the desired improvement. Measure what matters to improve what matters.
There are no head-snapping revelations in this book, nor does Annunzio claim to offer any. Several of the book's assertions are problematic. For example, on page 190, the reader is provided with a chart displaying two columns: On the left, "Conventional Wisdom" (e.g. "Hiring and nurturing high potential individuals will drive high performance.") and "Reality" (e.g. "It's the workgroup, not the individual."). In fact, both statements are true rather than mutually exclusive. I also challenge most of the other juxtapositions of "Conventional Wisdom" and "Reality" which incorrectly suggest either/or rather than sometimes yes/sometimes no.
Many readers will find the results of the research interesting and few will disagree with the importance of creating a workplace environment within which collaborative high performance is achieved and sustained. I would have added a fifth star to my rating had Annunzio devoted less attention to "what" and more attention to "how." For those in need of such guidance, I highly recommend The Wisdom of Teams: Creating the High-Performance Organization co-authored by Jon R. Katzenbach and Douglas K. Smith, Patrick M. Lencioni's The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable, and Organizing Genius: The Secrets of Creative Collaboration co-authored by Warren G. Bennis and Patricia Ward Biederman.
Not worth it, common sense information; not for MBA students.......2006-04-04
This book was a dissapointment for my whole MBA class. Definitely, if you have the slightest idea about how management works, this book will not bring you any new information. It is all based on a 3,000 people study.
The author repeats the same ideas 2-5 times, so it becomes pretty boring. The examples are not something you can relate to.
This book does not have any longevity, it is not something that you can go back and refer to, in a few months/years.

The first couple chapters were full of information that did not make sense. After Chapter Two the author does a great job showing the big picture. I couldn't help but chuckle during company meetings after reading this book. The real life experiences described in the book are exactly what my workforce reactions are to everyday situations. This book has been key to crossing the divide between upper management and the shop floor worker.
