Fans finally see how A&C Meet Frankenstein is created........2003-04-12
For years. The fans of Abbott & Costello wanted to find out how their most famous film parody of horror movies"Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein!"came about.A few books have come to light in recent years:"Movie Comedy Teams"by Leonard Maltin,"The Abbott & Costello Book"By Jim Mullholland and:"Abbott & Costello In Hollywood!"by Ron Palumbo & Bob Furnemack.Now..As a companion to These three manuscripts is the paperback edition of the film's script.Film historian Phil Riley has found an early draft of the script that shows us all scenes and dialogue that never appeared in the final release print:"Oh Oh! And Up Pops The Devil","You're not going to leave me with all of this work"."You're not suppose to throw away all of that fat wasite".etc in terms of the film's dialogue. There is one scene that was never used in the film and sadly. It prohibieted Poor Lou from using his improvational skills as a true movie clown. The scene has "Dracula"(Bela Lugosi)using his hyponotic powers to lure poor"Wilber Brown"(Costello)back into the castle for the brain transplaint.Lou keeps trying to run away. But the power of the evil vampire's spell is so strong that he is constantly being pulled back into the castle via the cave entrance. He finds a rock and sits there."Dracula"(Bela) by now is getting madder than hell! And he says to "Wilber"(Lou)"I Said Come Back!"."Wilber Brown"sits on the rock and says"'No! I'm sitting right here and I'm not going back!".Until both Lou and the rock are zipped back into the cave and into the evil clutches of "Dracula"(Bele Lugosi) and "Dr.Sandra Morney"(Lenore Aubert). The book also shows some photos from the film and some wonderful behind the scenes candid pictures from the cast members, the film's director(Charlie Barton),The film's producer(Bob Arthur)and Dialogue Director(Norman Abbott..Bud's newphew)and the members of the Abbott & Costello families. There are also some thoughts about the making of the film from the team's family members and the true story of how this classic parody was conceived and filmed by the book's author:Mr.Riley.For fans of horror movies and for fans of classic comedy movies. This is one book to have in your collection.Bravo Phil! Kevin S.Butler.
Magicimage Filmbooks Presents Abbott and Costello Meet Frank.......2001-08-04
This is a great treasure for Abbott and Costello fans as well as Chaney, Lugosi, or Universal fans. The pictures alone are worth the price of the book. The script is still titled "The Brain of Frankenstein" and includes deleted scenes which further add to the story. As someone who has seen the film many times the added info gives new insights as to the characters performances.

Solid.......2007-09-30
An easy to understand guide in music theory as it relates to the guitar. I'm no wiz-bang when it comes to music. I constantly struggle with it, but despite that I recieve so much gratification from the effort. This book lays out the concepts in very easy and digestible chunks so that even a slow music learner as myself is able to grasp the concepts.
Comprehensive, intuitive guide for the guitarist wanting to understand theory..........2007-09-22
I have been a musician all of my life, since the age of 4, and a guitarist for a decade, since the age of sixteen. I was in high school orchestra and took guitar lessons for a few years, but at no time during any of this did any of my instructors really help me understand music theory. I tried learning a few times by myself, but that always ended in frustration.
Then I found this book. "Music Theory for Guitarists" is the most in-depth, intuitive, and well thought out book on the subject that I have ever come across. After reading this book and completing the exercises in it, I now feel confident in my grasp of music theory in a way I thought would never happen.
This book deftly guides the reader through the journey from the most basic of basics to much more complex topics, such as chord substitution and reharmonization. It also includes an entire chapter on learning to find the key center of songs, which is an incredibly useful skill to have. You can't always tell by ear what key you are in.
Perhaps the most in depth part of this book...the author analyzes the major and minor scales, and all of their modes, in depth. He gives each scale and mode its own section, discussing the nuances of what sets each apart from the others, and giving ideas for how and when to apply it in real world situations. He also goes into detail about building and identifying chords and harmonizing the major and minor scales (a section that has completely reinvented the way I look at writing music.)
I cannot say enough about this book. It has opened my eyes to a subject I thought I was too "stupid" to grasp, and showed me that I was only unable to learn because it had never been presented to me correctly. If you have any weaknesses in your knowledge of music theory, I would strongly recommend that you take advantage of the goldmine of information found in this book. You will likely find yourself, as I have, seeing the language of music in a completely different light, and for the first time really seeing how all Western music is connected at the root.
Great book!.......2007-09-17
Although some of the concepts can be a little tough at first, this book has become invaluable to me. It has enabled me to progress as a professional guitarist, not just someone who seeks to "self-learn" things on their own by playing songs of favorite bands.
I am very glad I got this book. It will teach you everything you need to know about music theory- which will greatly improve your guitar playing abilities in the long run.
great book.......2007-08-29
Ive reviewed alot of material on theory, and I really gained alot from this book. I dont have a guitar teacher, however, I do have a music theory instructor that I meet with weekly, and now that Ive completed a workbook in theory, and now reviewing with Music theory for guitarists, I feel that I am covering things as both review and newly applied to the guitar. There are great tips to understanding the guitar as well, which make me create my own music, and not just learn songs. Songs seem great for the once a year campfire, where everyone can sing along, but I play everyday, and without an audience. Sooner or later, youre going to discover that youre bored with other peoples songs, and youre ready to create your own music, of which this book gives you the keys to understanding this and take off on your own. Before this book, I was very frustrated with the fret board, now its user friendly in all positions.
Surprisingly useful.......2007-05-29
I've been playing guitar for roughly 12 years now, and I had stagnated. While I could play just about anything I wanted to (except a little Django) I had some weaknesses. I had learned theory in school, but it was strictly on paper - I had only applied the knowledge to guitar in the most obvious ways.
With increased practice time, I've been looking for more material to learn. I wanted a book that would provide all of the scale exercises I'd need to become a little more fluent in my ability to construct interesting ideas.
And this book helps quite a bit!
It is a dense book, since it boils theory down to very concise entries. It isn't a book you can fly through, especially if you haven't already known what you were doing.
So far, my speed has increased, and my scale knowledge has blossomed.
Book Description
The author knows from over 20 years of teaching experience that students form most of their good and bad habits in the first six months of practicing. It is therefore extremely important to use a method book that clearly and concisely covers the important subjects of proper playing technique, tuning, picking, strumming, music theory and rhythm. Furthermore, the only way a student can remember the information learned is to apply it.
Customer Reviews:
How serious are you about learning to play guitar?.......2005-01-06
First, I would like to point out that this book is but a small part of a VERY thorough collection of educational material for guitar from Mr. Arnold. Each of his books targets particular aspects of guitar and often music in general. The books are part of a complete system by which you can communicate with Mr. Arnold. He actually answers e-mail that you send him and responds with VERY thorough and understandable answers. This "Beginning..." book has a good introduction to chord progressions, technique, and virtually everything you need to get started. I can not recommend this book highly enough. It is NOT a "quick fix" method by which you learn patterns on the fretboard and never even know what notes you are playing. It is not really targeted for any particular music genre, so I think it is appropriate for anyone that is serious about truly learning to play guitar. You begin to learn theory, sight reading, technique, and he will probably encourage you to begin ear training as well (another one of his books). His books are augmented with videos and additional information available on his web site. You can get access to the site by buying any one of his books.
The chord progressions are basic and easy to learn. Yes, it will take some time to learn them, if you are 100% new to guitar, but it is worth it. Each progression is played at three levels and the notation helps you to begin to understand rhythm as well. THIS BOOK COVERS ALL THE BASES FOR THE BEGINNER! E-mail Mr. Arnold if you have questions and he will fill in any ambiguity.
I would like to repeat that although you could just learn your basics from this book, without any of his other workbooks and such, I think that once you get started, you will be hooked. Bruce Arnold knows how to teach music and knows how to convey information in his books, web site, and with personal e-mail. This book is part of a total system (books, workbooks, website, e-mail) that Mr. Arnold can customize for you (by suggesting the appropriate books) that will allow you to take your guitar knowledge as far as you want to go, whether you want to go pro or primarily just play for fun, such as myself.
I think that this is the best method of learning. You have the luxury of learning at your own pace with plenty of reference material AND you have e-mail access to the author of the books if you get stuck on something. It is the best of both worlds of lessons and learning on your own. I have not found anything else quite like it, particularly with the quality of information that Mr. Arnold provides.
If you want to really learn, BUY THIS BOOK. If you just want to strum chords to folks songs for kids, get the e-Media CDROM and go through it (It puts me to sleep.) If you want quick fixes and don't care to understand what you are playing, this will not provide what you are looking for. If you just want to be able to "shread" through pentatonic scales at blazing speeds on your guitar to impress your friends (never actually understanding what you are doing or why), this is not your book. You will need to be serious about learning about music and about the guitar to get through any of this series of books, including this one. These books are for people that want to understand what they are playing so that each new song is not like starting over in your learning process. With a solid foundation, each new song is learned in a fraction of the time it would take if you don't understand anything but where to put each finger for a few chords.
I would also suggest that you purchase (in the near future) a songbook of "Easy Guitar" songs (or something similar) to start working on as well as this book or any beginning method book. This book provides the foundation, but you will want something else to work with at the same time that provides some songs that you have fun learning. Mr. Arnold will probably also recommend that you be sure to spend some time just having fun playing your guitar as well as practicing from the book or doing theory study. You have to continue to enjoy PLAYING as well as learning. That was key for me to maintain my interest.
All I can say is: If you want to learn from a pro, BUY THE BOOK! You won't regret it. Just plan to put a little time into it. As with anything worth doing, it takes time to learn to do it properly. This book will begin your journey.
Stuff I actually want to learn.......2004-07-01
I bought eMedia Guitar Method, Vol 1 and 1st Steps for a Beginning Guitarist. For myself I greatly prefer 1st Steps for a Beginning Guitarist. I thought eMedia was way over priced for what it offered. I guess if you are really struggling with the guitar, can't even finger a C chord after a few weeks of practice and like songs like Michael Rows a Boat Ashore eMedia would be perfect. 99% of the songs they teach I would never care to play. The Chord finder was cool but no songs for most of the chords in the chord finder so I was unsure how to use them. On the other hand I thought 1st Steps for a Beginning Guitarist was great. I should point out that you really should have a DSL or cable connection to the internet for this book. It comes with nothing but the publisher's website and it has 100's of videos, mp3 and midifiles for the information in the book. I've ordered a few of Mr. Arnold's books and I should also point out that he's an author that targets a student that really wants to play well and maybe form a band. His education style is more like one musician to another budding musician rather than giving you stuff that is corny or uninteresting. He also interacts with you via email if you have questions. So I guess what I'm saying is eMedia is fine if you really just want to accompany children or actually like campfire songs on the other hand if you want to learn stuff you wouldn't mind playing with your friends or in a band then I'd go for the 1st Steps.
Amazing Book.......2004-06-25
This book is like getting a book and a DVD. Amazing amount of information for a beginning guitarist to explore. The book is well organized and the on-line video etc... is well laid out. I found the videos showing the pitfalls of each chord type to be very informative. The strumming help files also help me coordinate both my hands. Highly recommended as a First Step for those of us just getting started on this cool instrument.
Amazing amount of information.......2004-02-27
I found this book to be well written and got the feeling that the author is seriously dedicated to teaching. I was a little concerned because I knew of Mr. Arnold from his CDs and wasn't sure if a player would also be a good teacher or could write a good book. I was pretty overwhelmed by the amount of information available in the book and on the publisher's website. This isn't a famous guitar player trying to cash in on his playing status to make money. I was particularly impressed by the amount of videos and MP3 files that are available. I first thought why didn't they just give me a DVD or a CD with this book. I'm not positive but I don't even think you could fit the amount of videos and MP3's on one CD or DVD. I found it interesting that the book doesn't really go into to learning scales but the website gives you fingerings for a hugh amount of scales with videos showing you how to play the scales and comments on the right way to learn the scales, Overall I'd say this book is for the folks out there that are serious weekend guitar players. By serious I mean someone who wants to know what they are doing on the guitar not just learn a bunch of fingerings and hope for the best. I got a couple of the other best sellers along with this book and although some of them claimed to an easy method I didn't find it any easier than this book. They all contained about the same information except this book then goes way beyond the other books I bought. For instance I found everything is clearly laid out with nice big chord diagrams with the added bonus of where these notes would be on a music staff. The other books didn't have information on where the notes of the chords are on a staff. All the books seem to contain the same chords basically the "open" and "barre" position chords. I really appreciated all the comments throughout the 1st Steps book on which chords where hard so that I knew to be patient. The real kicker was the videos showing Mr Arnold playing each chord and explaining what problems you may encounter along with how to mute the strings so you wouldn't have to worry so much about how you are strumming the chord. Seems like a small amount of information but it really helped me learn the chords quicker. There are many many tips like this along the way in this book and in the videos that really helped me improve and/or understand why I was having problems. I would recommend this book without hesitation.
Great Stuff.......2004-02-19
I'm a person returning to the guitar after a 10 year break. Remembered some stuff but really wanted to start from the beginning again. I've been working with this book for a few weeks now and have to report that the book in combination with the on-line stuff is fantastic. The Publisher's Website contains multiple videos covering the information in the book and many other topics. For instance there are videos on how to memorizing chords and substitute chord progressions for the progressions found in the book. The Hendrix one is killer. There are videos on such things as the CAGED system and other common misconceptions which I found very informative and made me see some of my misconceptions about the best way to learn. Overall I think this is a very easy method to learn from. I found the videos in particular to be very quick study and something I could play over and over until I mastered the information. I find Mr. Arnold's teaching style to be quite thorough and it's obvious from the videos that he enjoys teaching. Oh yeh, the videos of every chord showing alternate fingers and all the problems that students have was a real eye opener. OK so I could go on and on but you get the picture this is a cool book so check it out!
Product Description
Chords and scales dominate every style of music, from downhome country to the wildest imaginings of jazz. Together they represent melody and harmony - the very essence of music itself. And yet here are two areas of the guitarist's vocabulary that often go undeveloped, the accepted wisdom being that anything more than a casual glance in either direction condemns the students to music-theory purgatory. Here at last is a book that tackles these two vital areas in simple, no-nonsense terms. With over 400 diagrams and a comprehensive audio CD, bestselling guitar author David Mead teaches you how to construct chords and scales from the ground up, how to recognise important chord and scale families and how to organise your fretboard using the CAGED concept. With a chapter on improvisation providing vital tips on soloing over chord changes. Chords And Scales For Guitarists is all you need to make your guitar solos sound more musical and develop all the instincts of a fully rounded musician.
Customer Reviews:
another excellent work by David Mead.......2005-03-16
Bearing in mind the title of this book is "chords and scales for guitarists" this is an excellent book.It is a systematic, intelligent and user friendly book that has plenty of depth. It is a fantastic theory book for guitar without being dry and acedemic. It is also a very practical book for guitarists. The chapters on caged theory are very good as most guitarists have never ever thought of the fretboard in this way. ( a type of visual fretboard orientation)The previous reviewer was correct in recommending Bill Edwards book for an indepth look at caged theory however.
David Meads book is another example of his gift of imparting knowledge and I'm very glad I bought it.
Love his other books, but..........2004-09-24
It pains me to write anything negative about David Mead's work as I highly value and wholeheartedly recommend his other books, in particular "The Ten Minute Guitar Workout", "Basic Guitar Workout", and "Rhythm - A Step by Step Guide to Understanding Rhythm for Guitar". These are all great learning tools that would serve guitarists of almost any level well.
But then there's this book. It's not bad, but it's not nearly as concise as his other works. In fact, I read it three times and still felt rather confused. Maybe I'm an idiot, but when it comes to explaining the CAGED system of organizing the fretboard, which is ultimately what this book is about, I learned more in 14 pages of Bill Edward's excellent Fretboard Logic series than in reading this book from cover to cover.
Buy Mead's other books, especially if you're an intermediate or beginner. But if you want to master the fretboard, get Fretboard Logic. There is no other.
Review - Chords and Scales for Guitarists.......2004-01-20
I liked this book. I have played guitar for many years but have only recently tried to learn a bit more about the theory in an attempt to improve my playing. So far I have only read this book (haven't actually played the exercises yet with the CD).
The book is not heavy on theory. As the author puts it "I also want to put accross information in as clear, un-cluttered and jargon-free way that I can." I think he pretty much suceeds in that goal.
The book uses TAB rather than standard notation, so if you can't read standard music notation you can still get something out of this book.
It is more than just a book full of scales and is written in an easy to read style. I feel I have picked up a few things (and think I will pick up more once I start playing along with the CD) by reading through this book.

Negligence or Deceit?!.......2005-04-01
I cannot stand to let any positive review of this book (even one
implying some acceptability of it) risk influencing a potential
reader: this supposed book on knots is beyond the pale bad!
One reviewer remarks that the book shows "a few knots that you
probably will not use (Hangman's Noose...)", and this helps show
one (of many) egregious flaws: the photo of the supposed Hangman's
Noose is in fact of a simply coiled hank of rope--you know, with
multiple loops at each end, and a couple lines that suspend this
hank running up out of the picture. In short, it's nothing at all
like the alleged knot! That is the nature of this terrible book.
How can anyone giving even cursory review of it not see this at
once? --(gross) negligence, or deceit!
I'm being generous with 1 star!.......2003-01-23
The book doesn't live up to its 'impressive' title. One of the 'Top 50 reviewers' seems to at least try and give a attempt at an honest review with out being too cutting the other doesn't seem to have ever picked up a piece of rope. This book is almost all glitz with very little substance. It is mediocre at best. I think a beginner or un-knowledgeable person would be confused by bad descriptions that don't match up with pictures, pictures that show bad or misleading implementations and uses, good diagrams with bad descriptions, good descriptions with bad diagrams. It was impressive at first with clean photographic work on slick paper but when you delve into the substance and really look at the work then you see more and more flaws. Yes, it is cheap -- but this is one case where you get your $s worth.
Not bad but could be better.......2001-09-12
This book contains a good variety of knots for various uses. Pretty much any knot that you are likely to need is here somewhere. The photographs and the drawings are very good when taken by themselves however the book suffers terribly when it comes to consistency and also leaves a few things out. For example, it shows a seized half hitch by showing how to tie the half hitch and then saying to "lash small stuff around the ends to secure". It does not say how to lash the smaller cord. Some people would also find it confusing that the illustrations on how to tie a knot sometimes do not match with the photograph of the finished knot. For example, the half hitch picture shows the standing end of the rope toward you and the illustrations show tieing it with the standing end away from you. Also the taunt line hitch (an extremely useful knot) in the photograph is around the standing end of the same rope (the most common way of tieing it) and the illustration appears to be tieing it around a pole of some type. If you already have a basic understanding of knots then it is easy enough to figure out and follow and a good book to use to expand your knowledge of knots. If you are a complete novice then you may find some difficulty following along but the extra effort is worth it when you get one figured out and tied right.
Lewis loves knots and this book expresses his passion........2001-06-16
I needed to know how to correctly tie knots because of my new hobby - sailing. When the main sheet is flapping and the lines are swinging wildly, you gotta' tie a good knot quickly.
`Great Knots' gives 175 examples of knots. Now there are a few knots that you probably will not use (Hangman's Noose, Shamrock, etc.) but others that can be used daily. Regardless, if you want a fancy knot or just a real simple knot, Derrick Lewis will show you how to tie it right.
The book has excellent color photos of every knot, and most of the photos show the knot being used . . . the hangman's noose a notable exception. The examples are good and generally easy to follow, though not as easy as the step-by-step color illustrations found in Budworth's `The Complete Book of Sailing Knots (see my review). Expert instructions at a very impressive price makes this a very good purchase . Recommended
Don't waste your money.......2000-05-22
AT first glance this book appears to show a decent variety of knots including some more obscure button knots (why I originally looked at it). Sadly, this books fails miserably on at tleast 2 counts: 1 The diagrams are very poor, especially for the more complicated button knots. 2 Some of them are just plain wrong - if you follow the instructions (many of which are badly worded and confusing) you just end up with a tangle. Just search on knots and by something else - anything else!

knots and how to tie them.......2007-08-23
This is worthwhile, from simple to pretty complicated knot ties.
Useful and reasonably priced.
A Hands-on Guide to Tying Knots.......2006-07-20
This handy book features step-by-step drawings that show how to tie more than 75 different knots. At the beginning of each chapters there is an explanation of the specific uses of the knots covered on it.
The book describes three main type of knots; Knots, Hitches, and Bends. It then presents more detailed variations of those styles: Decorative knots, lariats, trick knots, and what the author calls spectacular knots.
There are more comprehensive books on knots at a higher price, but all in all this is a Good reference at a good price.
Junk.......2002-12-05
Maybe 40 years ago this passed for a book on knots, not today. With so many good books about knots and ropework available, there is absolutely no reason to get this one. I felt cheated out of my money when I actually started to go through the book in detail. The illustrations don't match the text, and in some cases are just plain wrong. I collect books on ropework, knots and rigging and currently own dozens. This is the first one I considered throwing away.
Disappointing.......2002-01-05
A good selection of knots, but some illustrations have errors. Other problems: there is a picture of each knot as it's being laid, but not of the knot as it appears when dressed (tightened) -- this can make a huge difference for some of them. Also, the text doesn't tell you how to use the knot, what it's good for, or when you might want to use it.
This is not a bad intro book, all in all, but I'd be happier with something more thorough, better illustrated, and with more detailed text.
Rope in Hand, I Opened the Cover.............2000-06-25
This book was originally published in 1961 and I suspect, parts of it appeared in "The Boy Scout Handbook" during the 60's. It covers a large variety of knots and tricks, too. Each subject is accompanied by hand drawn pictures of the knot being described as well as a clear description of how to tie it. Two rope knots are illustrated with one dark and one light strand to make them clearer. Uses and nicknames of the various knots are also included. The knots are divided into sections in the book, arranged by similarity of application.
This is a great reference for anyone who works with rope, from a Boy Scout to a Sailor. Teamsters all use ratcheting nylon straps now, but the original method of tieing down with ropes can be learned in this book. There are knots for Cowboys, Fishermen and Magicians. Even Decorators could learn a few fancy knots here. There are dozens of knots here for many purposes.

Customer Reviews:
If you are a working woman, this is a must read..........2007-05-07
I found the advice in this book priceless. I have been reading similar books lately, but "Naked in the Boardroom" is by far the best. If you are looking for a book that gives practical advice for getting the most out of your career, you won't be disappointed.
A great airplane book.......2007-03-18
An easy to read book by Robin Woolaner, perhaps best known for founding Parenting Magazine. She recounts her experiences in business, and calls them out as ""Naked Truths.""
For example, ""Naked Truth #60: Follow up is easy and instills trust"" and ""Naked Truth #21: When something happens that doesn''t sit well in the pit of your stomach, don''t forget that feeling even if the circumstances have changed. The feeling is real; the change in circumstances may not be.""
She spends at least as much time on her failures as her successes and draws lessons from all her experiences.
I got the feeling that at first this book was aimed at businesswomen, and then was recast as a general business book. Probably a book positioning move, and the book doesn''t suffer from it. That said, there are some lessons that apply specifically to women, for example ""Naked Truth #45: Women are damned as aggressive if we negotiate for more pay, and damnably underpaid if we don't. Force yourself to negotiate and learn how.""
I read this is about three hours and enjoyed it. It would make a great airplane book. Some of the "Naked Truths" resonated strongly and will no doubt stay with me.
VERY CANDID.......2007-02-19
I completely enjoyed reading this book. She tells it just as it was without any PR face. I really apreciate being able to take an in-depth look at how things function and I found the advice invaluable.
Good easy to read business insights.......2006-09-16
This is a good read. Robin looks back and reflects on her career to date. In an easy conversational tone she writes about what she did, how she did it and provides plenty of business insights with her "81 Naked Truths".
She agrees with Marcus Buckingham's view on working from your strengths: "The lessons I learned in business all pint to one broad truth: Success follows when you use what you've got. You will succeed because of, not in spite of, your personal traits. The trick is to make your aptitude and flair work for you in a style that is uniquely yours. Page vii"
If this work is a reflection of Robin's style, then I could work for her.
"In the hundreds of conversations I've had with women on the cusp of greatness - whether over late night pizza or waiting at crowded airport gates - I've always ended up saying the same thing in different ways: Business is personal. Every necessary decision-making tool is already inside you - your experience, brain, and gut will tell you what to do, if you can access heir messages. This is a skill that can be honed, and this book - and taking on the challenges presented to you - will show you how to do that. Page viii"
The personal approach in the book is somewhat unsettling when she gets into the parts where the men she meets look to take advantage of her as a woman. The perspective is insightful. She approached a situation as a simple meeting and yet there were already opportunities for it to be something other than the simpleness of her perspective. Hindsight is usually 20/20 but the outside observer I think would have raised red flags earlier than she acknowledges. Other than that, the situations are handled appropriately. I wonder how some of the men she writes of would have written of the same event?
"Naked Truth #4 --- Terrible things can happen to a women in business; the victims let it ruin their careers, the victors move on."
Moving on is a good thing. Good or bad, recognize the learning experience and go forward. Dwelling in the past, especially on the glory of a past accomplishment is as hindering to an individual as continuing to dwell on a wrong done. The chip on the shoulder is far more obvious to those around.
"... early jobs helped me develop an important skill: finding satisfaction in achievements I could measure myself, and not to rely on praise from my boss. Page 25"
She has been a life long learner. She appears to be a good observer of people.
"Think about it: If progression up the career ladder is tied to achievement, the law of averages means that your bosses in your early jobs will be the least skilled ones you will encounter. You will need to measure your own performance and create your own report card. This is a skill worth developing, because if your boss later in your career is like I am, she will ask you to do a self-evaluation rather than give you one out of the blue. (It's less work for her.) So early on, learn to figure out the measures of success, and hold yourself to them. Page 27"
The key aspect of success in life is where you start. If you can look at yourself in the mirror, know and accept who you are, and be able to execute within that arena, Robin says this in several ways during this book.
"Become your own toughest critic, but don't share the self-criticism. Page 27"
Definitely good advice. People think that are being helpful and honest when they share their faults. On the one hand, they are. On the other hand, it can easily be spun to be a negative. Don't put yourself down. Acknowledge needing to learn but done reveal the specifics.
"Learning happens in every job but you have to pay attention. Page 34"
Attention is so critical to life and business. By paying attention to what is happening you should be able to recognize what is an opportunity, a door opening especially for you to take, or a dead end where you need to sit back and evaluate the situation before proceeding.
I can picture Robin sitting in a hotel lobby, settled in one of the comfy chairs, legs crossed and talking through the chapters in this book. She would punctuate some of the stories with laughter, some with sternness, some stories even with some brief bitterness, but always with a drive forward. A willingness and eagerness to do something different and successful. While she apparently was sitting on the sidelines to work on this book and raise her daughter, I can not see her sitting on the sidelines for long. She needs to be back in the business world.
For good business advice in an easy read, I heartily recommend Naked in the Boardroom by Robin Wolaner.
Refreshing and candid.......2006-08-03
When I entered the business world, *Dress for Success* was one of our bibles. But it embodied a mind-set that went far beyond clothes: i.e., there was One Right Way to succeed in business, and, if you didn't have the correct behaviors and attitudes, you might as well kiss your career hopes goodbye. Although business dress and workplace behavior have both become more casual in recent years, there's still a prevailing belief that, to reach the highest echelons of a corporation, you must be hard-nosed and ruthless.
I found Wolaner's book refreshing because of her candor: her analysis of her mistakes is especially enlightening because it's easy to understand why she made them (and how we could easily fall into the same trap). I wholeheartedly agree with her that "business is personal," and that gratitude and respect will not only make the workplace more humane but ultimately contribute to the success of your business. But to me her most important point is this: you succeed in business not by blindly imitating a model of the Perfect Executive, but by being your authentic self. When she or other CEOs made a decision based on a need to "look tough" or avoid loss of face, it backfired; when the decision was based on what "felt right" to the person making it, it turned out much better.
