1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2003-10-08

You might find this book interesting if you've never read another book on screenwriting or human behavior. If you've read any of the other books in the field you will find this one inferior. Linda Seger's books on characterization are much better. I'm only glad I bought this title used from Amazon.com -- and I waited to sell it before I posted this review.

5 out of 5 stars More than pleased with this book........1998-07-25

Well, I must say that =I= find Michael Halperin's book an essential screenwriting reference. Dr. Halperin was one of the best screenwriting instructors I had at USC's School of Cinema-Television, where he taught the future pros of the industry. His advanced screenwriting classes were some of the toughest in the school--and therefore the most worthwhile.

What's so good about Halperin's book? For one thing, he doesn't talk down to you as a screenwriter. In fact, he presumes that you know what you are doing. Imagine that! So he's not going to hold your hand through the elementary parts of introductory screenwriting. Try Syd Field for that. Instead, Halperin shows the already competent writer how to improve his or her script's ultimate impact by significantly improving characterization.

Although I may agree that script consultant Linda Seger's books are excellent and beneficial, it should be pointed out that she has never written a single screenplay in her life.! Dr. Halperin is a =working= writer in the film industry, and his book is a winner. Enough said.

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this awful book........1998-06-17

As an aspiring screenwriter, I have devoured most of the commonly read texts currently available on the topic. Halperin's book does _not_ stand up favorably. In fact, not only is his writing style stilted and vague (e.g., non-specific use of "it" and "they", and more dumped quotes than you can shake your mouse at), his ideas are nothing more than lame banalities. For more info on writing pick up any of Syd Field's books, and for info on psychology any basic primer will do. His examples are not illustrative and his film analysis is at the middle-school level. Don't waste your money on this book like I did.

4 out of 5 stars Good information, but not the best reference on the subject.......1997-09-06

With all the screenwriting books on format and career success on the market it seems odd that there are only a handful of books devoted to the most important element of any good story--the CHARACTERS. Halperin's book is a welcome text on the subject, but it lacks the depth of Linda Seger's "Creating Unforgettable Characters. The chapters touch on essential elements found in successful stories such as myth, culture, and interior lives, but the examples and in-depth analysis are minimul. Many exercise questions at the end of each chapter fail to get the mind to develop the skills and ideas presented previously. The final chapter details what the author considers great characters from Citizen Kane to Forrest Gump, but I would have preferred more intense study of these characters within the subjects of each chapter. While I like this book for its contribution to a little written about subject I finished it feeling a bit shortchanged.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-03-12

Taught myself guitar in no time. Get the CD out of the book, play along with the songs, learn them (don't cheat by moving on until you have mastered the song just like the CD plays it), and soon enough you'll have mastered strings. Chords take a bit of practice, but once you get those, you feel pretty good about playing guitar. Then its off to level 2. A most efficient "self teaching" method I must say. Addicting almost.

After a 17 year layoff from playing Bass, I was invited to join the church worship team. I bought a Bass and the level 1 book. That book was excellent. Level 2 builds on level 1 exponentially.
The Cd is helpful as a guide of how each lesson should sound.
This book teaches technique and theory.
This book will get you where you want to go with your music.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for all Game Players.......2003-08-27

Sid Sackson was probably the most prolific collector of board games in the United States (and probably the world). Sid loved games and he loved inventing games, too. With many published games to his credit (some of which made their first public appearance in this book), Sid Sackson (the designer of one of my favorite games of all time, "Acquire") is my personal game guru and I have made a point of acquiring any game or book with his name attached. This book is full of fun and very playable games discovered, re-discovered, and invented by Sid Sackson. Do your brain a favor and buy this book now!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding - lots of great new games for you to play.......1999-05-03

This is a brilliant book by Sid Sackson. It compiles the rules for a variety of games, with the common feature that all can be played with the materials that you already have at home. Some games use cards, others use a chess or checkers set. There are a lot of paper and pencil games which are great to play while travelling.

The games are a mixture of "forgotten" games, new games invented by friends of Sid, as well as lots of games invented by the author. Many of these games have subsequently been published in a boxed format by major companies, but this book gives you a chance to try them out at no cost.

There are simple games, solitaire games, serious strategy games, party games for 20 or more people, and everything in-between.

My favourites in the collection include a 2 player card game of pure skill ("Mate"), a card game that resembles Canasta but which is rather more fun ("Paks"), a scrabble-like pencil and paper game ("CrossWords"), and a game called Focus that is 2 or 4 player strategy game that weakly resembles a cross between checkers and Shogi.

If you love games, then you should have this book. If you don't, then buying this book just might change your mind!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book with many original games.......1999-04-11

First published in 1969, this book brings you 38 original games. Sid Sackson collected these games as member of the N.Y.G.A (New York Game Associates), allthough many are his own invention.

It is true that any Hoyle will give you instant access to many games, but all these games somehow have something special.

My own favorite is Haggle, a delightfull party game for birthday parties.

                5 out of 5 stars definitely, a classic.......1996-09-25

Board and card games are so ancient and spread around the world that one may think nothing really new will come up. If that's your opinion, this book will change your mind, offering dozens of NEW games to play with pencil & paper, pocker chips or standard playing cards.

3 out of 5 stars Useful content, but not well written.......2007-08-01

For anyone who's looking for a well-written reflection on state-of-the-art direct marketing, this is not the right book. Yet, Arthur Hughes' 'Strategic Database Marketing' still has its merits.

It's a straight-forward introductory text that covers many aspects of direct marketing - mostly from an old-economy point of view. The good thing about this approach is that Hughes explains many procedures in detail that have proved to be useful over many years of practice (as he lets the reader know on many occasions, he has worked in direct marketing for a long time). And while the dull writing-style occasionally makes the content of the book seem dated, most of the ideas discussed in the book still apply. For example, Hughes does a good job explaining lifetime-value calculations, the Recency-Frequency-Monetary approach, regression analysis and other useful tools for anyone involved in direct marketing.

Unfortunately, it's not an enjoyable book. The biggest drawback is that Hughes doesn't come across as an agile intellect. He's good at explaining procedure, but rather clumsy in discussing ideas. Adding to that is his over-reliance on examples taken from his own private life (you'll learn many things about his wife that you never wanted to know) and his strange need to praise the superiority of the American economy whenever possible. If you can look past that, 'Strategic Database Marketing' may well be worth reading for any professional marketeer.

5 out of 5 stars Practical & technical enough for instant application.......2006-01-22

I love this book. Working as a data analyst in the CRM department, this book teaches me all the practical caculation/ideas for my work.

So far, this is the only book on the market that view database marketing from a quantitative point of view. On the other hand, it also instills the relationship marketing mind-set to the readers. For the rest of books avaliable in the markertplace on CRM/Database marketing, either it's too theoretical or IT. This is the best I read so far.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Updated 3rd Edition .......2005-10-23

My approach to marketing was totally changed by reading this book; I was able to refine a jumble of thoughts into a clear, cohesive strategy. If you are at all exposed to marketing at work, Hughes will give you the ability to prioritize what is most important in your job.

Hughes has just released a new edition of this classic. It is thoroughly updated to include developments of the last half decade (the failure of CRM in many applications, advancements in Web and e-mail marketing, etc). Every marketer and entrepreneur should read this book to learn how and why lifetime value is so important and how to build your company's strategy around it.

The best thing about this book is that it covers the technical details adequately, but is still readable enough that you do not need an MBA to understand it.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Coverage of Important Marketing Concepts.......2003-08-15

Hughes makes it exceedingly clear why customer loyalty and lifetime value are such critical marketing concepts. Hughes helps marketers understand why our hyper-focus on customer acquisition needs to be adjusted to consider retention and upsell as well.

                  In particular, Hughes explains:

                  * What Lifetime Value (LTV) is, why it matters, and how to calculate it
                  * The importance of testing programs and how best to go about it
                  * Segmenting your customer base by loyalty and LTV
                  * How tactics should differ for each segment
                  * Practical tips for creating a successful database marketing campaign.

Case studies and ROI numbers are used throughout the book. A must read for marketing proessionals.

5 out of 5 stars The Master Book.......2001-05-26

This book is the main book for my Internet Marketing Class at Mercy College's MS in Internet Business Systems program. It includes all necessary topics such as database marketing, banner advertisement, calculating LTV and RFM Email Marketing and best practices. This book is a must read for anyone in direct marketing field.

This text addresses the basic principles that underlie marketing and how e-business marketing techniques are fundamentally changing the traditional marketing process. This text is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate level courses in e-commerce.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to the World of E-Business.......2001-02-12

This book marks a significant improvement in the universiy level texts on the revolution in business practice and orgranizaiton brought on by the Internet. The material is well presented and I use it for an introductory class in e-commerce and e-business marketing. This is a very difficult topic to work in as it changes so quickly, at least that is the politically correct way to phrase this. The reality is that the e-commerce revolution has many more casualties to take before it loses the "e-" and become just the way we do business. Teaching e-commerce to the employees of those future casualties requires a level of sensitivity that most book efforts to date have simply avoided. The usual model is to focus on the technology and to deal with the whole thing as another sales channel in the marketing department. Kleindl goes a good bit farther in suggesting the fundamental orgranizational changes that are inherent in becoming an e-business. I would have been happier if he had gone a little farther and more clearly stated that the camels nose is already in the tent and the whole thing is going to come down sooner than we think. But the fact that he went as far as he has may explain why this book is so hard to purchase. I have to have my students purchase is directly from Amazon as the Unversity of Hawaii Bookstore was told that it has not been published. Interesting.

Brad Kleindl's "Strategic Electronic Marketing" brings the e-business revolution right home for anyone to understand. At a diminutive 300 pages Kleindl strikes the ideal balance between being "small and accessible" and "detailed and meaningful."

In addition to regular text, Kleindl also utilizes case studies as well citations of actual Internet web sites and businesses to highlight his points. The end of chapter questions reinforces concepts learned and covered during the chapter as well as stimulates critical-thinking.

Among the various real-life companies covered as case studies in the book are: Egghead.com, Dell Computer, Amazon.com, AutoByteTel, IngramMicro, BMW, eToys, CDNow, AT&T, RealNetworks, and many more.

Here are the topics that Kleindl covers:

                  1. Introduction to E-Business: E-based marketing, online business models

                  2. Understanding E-Business Technology: The Internet, ISPs, and the Web

                  3. E-Business Communication: Many-to-many promotion, the AIDA model, Intranets and Extranets, sales force automation, and online advertising

                  4. E-Business Distribution Systems: Distribution channels and relationship development

                  5. E-Business Value Strategies: online purchasing, service strategies and CRM, b2b commerce, supply-chain management, market-of-one strategy, auction strategy and pricing strategy

                  6. Diffusion of Innovations: Innovations, individual adoption, the product life cycle, online communities, acceptance of innovation in business

                  7. Information Collection and Use: technologies, techniques and privacy issues

                  8. E-Business Strategy: E-business value chain, e-business strategy

                  9. E-Business Management: Management and Leadership chain, distance working, organizational hierarchies

                  10. Political, Legal and Ethical Issues: privacy, intellectual property, access and equity

Overall, this book is extremely easy to read and more importantly, a great learning tool. This book was used as the text for an e-commerce course I took during the summer of 2002. Whether you are studying this subject independently or whether you are an instructor looking to use this book for your course, you cannot go wrong with Kleindl's "Strategic Electronic Marketing."

5 out of 5 stars Great entry level book.......2005-12-07

This is an excellent book if your are new to database marketing (or have a staff member new to database marketing). It is very easy to read and and explains database marketing in the simplist terms.

It is not a book for the advanced database marketer, nor does it cover advanced strategies. Paul Wang is very knowledgeable and I have seen several of his (and Arthur Hughes) presentations through the DMA.

1 out of 5 stars The Gideon Bible of the Database Marketing Profession.......2003-06-13

If your job requires database marketing and you need to find ways to do it better, this book is not for you. This book appears to have been written more for the marketing manager who has database marketers reporting to him or her, but who has no direct involvement in the process. This book is just a basic overview of what database marketing is, with no practical use.
Even the examples appear contrived and not actual case studies.

Incidentally, years after purchasing this book, I took a database marketing course in my MBA program that was taught by the wife of one of the authors. Like the book, the course didn't offer much either. I ended up scrapping the book -- not passing it on, but tossing it -- shortly after that.

3 out of 5 stars lacks both theoretical depth and vivid real world cases.......1999-11-15

This book doesn't have a lot of real world business cases, a little bit boring. On the other hand, it doesn't have much theoretical depth either. As a practioner, I didn't find much useful info. inside.

Jackson and Wang have developed a "Bible" for implementing database marketing. The book helps marketers implement a customer management program at any level of application by applying 3 basic building blocks of skills. Best book i've read on the topic !

From the supplier: A properly managed customer database can be an important strategic asset. Using sophisticated information and communications technology, companies can record, document and track customer transactions and characteristics, information which can be used strategically. Companies considering to design and manage customer databases should take note that such an initiative can be costly, and does not immediately result in desired benefits. However, well-managed databases should generate increasing returns to use as time progresses. Firms should also remember that implementing such databases requires new managerial and human resources skills. Companies using customer databases should assess their current databases from a customer perspective, set clear performance measures and track these across time, and remember increasing returns to use.

5 out of 5 stars Not a slightly view of marketing information systems.......2007-08-19

There is no much literature about marketing information systems. This is a very well focused book, I think the best on this important industry. It is very clear, well written and has detailed descriptions of the largest MIS, like ACNIELSEN, PRIZM, INFORMATION RESOURCES. I think this book is worth one month in a US University for about USD $10.000. The best of the book is it's deep and scientific approach to the theme. Not slightly, just technical, written to engineers not to generalists.
