Book Description

“Blending cinematic, literary, historical, and political analyses, Watching Rape demonstrates that filmic representations of rape are never only about gender and sexual violence, but are narrative devices that also attempt to regulate such conflicts and boundaries of power as race, nationality, and social class. Projansky makes good on her bold claim that representations of rape are ubiquitous, versatile, and utterly central to the history of cinema itself. A scholarly tour de force, a feminist triumph. Two thumbs up!”
—Judith Stacey, University of Southern California

“Exciting and original. Sarah Projansky's work on rape and postfeminism is an important contribution to scholarship in film and cultural studies, as well as women's studies.”
—Richard Slotkin, author of Gunfighter Nation

”Watching Rape is a compelling account of the role of the rape in making meaning and re-inscribing inequalities within visual media, and as such it is a necessary and valuable research contribution. “
—Leslie Kern, School of Women's Studies, York University

“Sarah Projansky's work is distinctive for its theoretical clarity and interdisciplinary feminist framework. She urges us to think deeply about the ways in which media shape our understandings of sexual violence. Watching Rape is a powerful, historically grounded, incisive analysis of the representation of sexual violence.”
—Rosa Linda Fregoso, University of California-Santa Cruz

Looking at popular culture from 1980 to the present, feminism appears to be "over": that is, according to popular critics we are in an era of "postfeminism" in which feminism has supposedly already achieved equality for women.

Not so, says Sarah Projansky. In Watching Rape, Projansky undermines this complacent view in her fascinating and thorough analysis of depictions of rape in U.S. film, television, and independent video. Through a cultural studies analysis of such films as Thelma and Louise, Daughters of the Dust, and She's Gotta Have It, and television shows like ER, Ally McBeal, Beverly Hills 90210, and various made-for-tv movies, Projansky challenges us to see popular culture as a part of our everyday lives and practices, and to view that culture critically. How have media defined rape and feminism differently over time? How do popular narratives about rape also communicate ideas about gender, race, class, nationality, and sexuality? And, what is the future of feminist politics, theory, and criticism with regard to issues of sexual violence, postfeminism, and popular media?

The first study to address the relationship between rape and postfeminism, and one of the most detailed and thorough analyses of rape in 25 years, Watching Rape is a crucial contribution to contemporary feminism.

5 out of 5 stars Watching Rape.......2003-05-19

I first saw Sarah Projansky present this book at the women's center of UC Davis. Her presentation was articulate, comprehensive, sensitive, and compelling. Her thoughts, ideas, and observations were enlightening.

I have since read her book, "Watching Rape", and it is incredibly well done, comprehensive, fresh, and informative on many levels. This book was appealing to me as a survivor of sexual violence, an activist for ending sexual violence, and a writer. I especially appreciated the in-depth attention she paid to racism and/or the absence of race awareness in the media and sexual violence publications. I was also interested in her book to read her insights about the violence of spectators who do not intervene during a rape (and often hurt women [or children] further), and for her discussion of rape prevention and educational films and videos.

I highly recommend this book to people who are interested in studying film representations of sexual violence and it's implications on our journey towards a less violent world, or to people who are interested in understanding and dispelling rape myths and the present state of feminism.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but not in depth.......2007-03-09

This is a nice book for people who have the basic idea of ASP.NET. This Book covers almost all topics for .Net2.0 . It is a very good reference book for newbie.
Unfortunately, this book isn't in-depth for lots of topics, basically it just introduces most common cases, and you probably can't find what you want for some topics. (Eg implement Sorting and Pagation for ObjectDataSource, Crystal Report, memory management, ADO.NET in depth, .Net Virtual Machine etc). The source code is another down side for this book. Most of the code doesn't run, also the connection string wasn't right at the first place, I have to spend hours and hours to get it right.
In conclusion, it worth to buy, if you just want learn asp.net in a fast way. It will give you the solution for most tasks. Pretty good reference book.

      5 out of 5 stars Great ASP.NET 2.0 Reference.......2007-01-22

This is a great ASP.NET 2.0 reference book. It is absolutely packed with information covering all areas of the product. The book is also somewhat unique in that all code snippets are provided in both VB and C#, making it useful to all developers.

The authors are fantastic technical experts and speakers on .NET and ASP.NET. I think you can learn a lot from this book.

4 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of ASP.NET.......2007-01-21

Wrox is a great publisher of quick and massive volumes with multiple authors. I'm a teacher and look for good values that combine clear technical information and a broad range for a low cost. This is a good choice if you have experience with ASP.NET, know your web architecture (query strings, cookies, sessions, etc.), and don't want an extended tutorial. The reasoning for why you use these things wasn't clear but the details on how to use them exceeded most of the current fare which is why I chose to teach from the text recently. The quantity of code that was provided in VB and C# was excellent but the topics were out of order for classroom use. For the ASP.NET beginner, I feel it needs to be supplemented with a more tutorial based text and then this makes an excellent companion volume.

5 out of 5 stars A Professional Level Book in Every Way.......2006-10-25

This is a monumental book. Almost sixteen hundred pages of hi-tech stuff. It is not for the faint of heart. It is intended for people who have at least a general understanding of how the web works with particular attention as to how a database driven web site is set up and works. Knowledge and experience with earlier versions of ASP (Active Server Pages) would be very helpful, but so would experience using other technologies such as Cold Fusion, PHP, or Java. Such knowledge is to provide you with the concepts of doing a dynamic web page consisting of a framework or template with the actual data being displayed coming from a database.

The book builds on this basic understanding to start with a very simple page and go on to much more complex tasks such as the building XML web services. Along the way every aspect of ASP.NET 2.0 is discussed.

ASP.NET 2.0 is the second major release of ASP.NET, Microsoft's main concept for programming dynamic web pages. The focus of the new release is on productivity. A major goal of the development team was to reduce the number of lines of code needed to program a page by two thirds. On the whole they suceeded.

In addition, the book contains two CD-ROMs. One is a 180 day trial version of Visual Studio 2005. The other has about a thousand pages from about 15 other WROX books that you may find helpful in looking up background information. The book is in reference format rather than tutorial. It will be very helpful for quite a long time.

1 out of 5 stars Not for an agoraphobic!.......2007-06-20

I was quite dissapointed after reading most of this book. It refers to Agoraphobia simply as an avoidance! It gives the general common sence answers for anexiety ; both social and common. I have had Agoraphobia (housebound) for almost 13 years...this time. But have been plagued by it most of my life. It seems by her saying Agoraphobia is merely an avoidance, it is trivalizing the seriousness of it! Wish I had not bought this waste of time! J. Dalton, Swansea, MA.

5 out of 5 stars This book is really a handy carry along to keep in your bag!.......2006-12-14

I really like this book. I could really relate to the scenarios it gave and love the charts given and self help. I have tons of tabs marking the best pages and she gave so much information it really did cover a lot of areas. I liked it so much firends had me copying and passing out some of the charts and a copy of the cover so they could get a copy themselves because I refuse to loan it out. I carried it in my bag for a very long time. I still use the techniques and plan on rereading it for a refresher. I love the highlighted areas that broke down stufff that was important so you could find it quickly after reading the chapters.

5 out of 5 stars A Big Help To Me.......2005-11-03

This book was very helpful to me. Just reading it seems to cause one's anxious thoughts to subside, as the book describes the causes and physical aspects of a panic attack and helps the reader to identify the process and isolate it as an objective physical and mental phenomenon which can be dealt with rationally using simple techniques described in the book. There are also questions to guide the reader to identify aspects of their personal and family history that may be contributing to the anxiety and panic attacks, and it includes information about standard treatments and medications for anxiety.

The phenomenon of anxiety is rooted in a panicky feeling of being overwhelmed in a crisis. The mere act of objectively studying the anxiety and panic helps to defuse it. Also it is a great help to see that anxiety symptoms are common to other people who have successfully learned to live with and/or overcome them.

Additionally this book is good because it allows you to practice "bibliotherapy" in the privacy of your own home, if you are uncomfortable with the idea of going through the formal mental health system to get some help, and helps you to realize whether your problem is severe enough to need professional assistance, or if you can manage it yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Magnesium can relieve anxiety and panic; please read review!.......2005-04-19

I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Self-Help Guide.......2005-01-10

Master Your Panic and Take Back Your Life, Third Edition, by Denise F. Beckfield,PhD. , written in lay language instead of "medicalese" is a step-by-step, straight forward how to help yourself if you suffer from panic attacks, anxiety, or agoraphobia. Explaining what constitutes a panic attack, the doctor shows what causes the frightening attacks to happen and how to trace and ammend their root causes. She details the warning signals to become alert to in order to sense an attack coming on before it really kicks in. Then Dr. Beckfield gives excellent yet simple methods of what to do to prevent the panic attack from occurring. The book helps the sufferer to analyse attack triggers and how to challenge catastrophic beliefs, how to practice situations that cause panic while learning the steps to prevent the attack. Her methods include his SRB formula which, when practiced can become automatic and restore the calm state of life which the panick attack sufferer has lost, giving back one's ease and control. The book has some excellent methods and is helpful also for family and friends to read in order to understand what the panic attack victim is experiencing and to help him or her conquer these overwhelming experiences. A very helpful book and an easy and interesting read. The First Aid for Panic is alone worth the price, from Impact Publishers in California.

4 out of 5 stars Shibut's excellent guide to Morphy!.......2004-10-09

Thanks to a recent gift from two of my Internet students, I just received this book a few days ago. (Thanks guys!) However, I did not need much introduction to this book, as I already owned the original hard-back edition as well.

Paul Morphy was one of the greatest players who ever lived, statistically he dominated his generation in a fashion that Bobby Fischer or Garry Kasparov cannot touch.

This is a great book, probably one of the most carefully written books on Morphy that you will find. It has OVER 400 games played by Morphy. All of his serious tournament and match games, as well as other games as well. (Games at odds, simultaneous games, blindfold games, etc.)

Many of the games are carefully annotated, the author did a wonderful job here. Many of the mistakes that were made in earlier books are caught and corrected.

This is NOT the ultimate biography on Morphy, it concentrates almost exclusively on Morphy's chess. (Chapters on Morphy's Openings, Morphy's Endings, etc.) And while I do not agree with every conclusion that the author reached, I do think that this is a LAND-MARK book ... and one that fully deserved to be reprinted.

A few flaws, there are some obvious typo's in here. The diagrams in the Dover edition are not as clear as in the original hard-back book. Some of the pages have a grainy feel to them, a few pages in my book were not cut correctly and are slightly skewed.

Overall, I give this book 4 stars. If you want to get better, you HAVE to study Morphy's tactics. This is the book to do it with. I highly recommend this book, despite the publisher's flaws. (All the older books on Morphy were in English Standard Descriptive Notation, this is one of the only books on Morphy in algebraic.)

                      3 out of 5 stars Nothing Special.......2003-12-09

The quality of the writing is mediocre at best, and the author is clearly underqualified to do in-depth analysis of Morphy's games. The book is overpriced. Chris Ward's book may not be the last word on Morphy, but Ward's a better player and annotator than Shibut, and he has all the same games. Certainly the games are great, but Shibut adds little of interest to Morphy's games or to the story of his life.

Unless money is no object, you really need to think twice when considering the purchase of a high-priced book by an unknown player.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating study of Morphy's play.......2003-07-27

This book deserves to be re-printed. It's simply fascinating. Did Morphy really anticipate Steinitz? Did masters understand the "principle of early development" even before Morphy? Shibut has many interesting things to say about the evolution of chess, with reference to games and history for support. It's a fairly scholarly work, but not a dry one. I think a club-level chess player could learn a bit about chess from this book, while enjoying the lessons of history.

The meat of the book lies in the chapters comparing Morphy to a)Anderssen and the romantics, b)Steinitz, c)Barnes, who scored more points off him than anyone, and d)modern players (via Reti's assessments). Here you will find dozens of Morphy games with an unusual sort of annotation. Shibut does not give us many lines of variations, though he does sometimes point out tactical shots. More often, he assesses the postions qualitatively, showing us the sorts of plans that Morphy used. He also includes a great many references to the specific ideas and refutations of other authors, often pointing out THEIR mistakes. All of this gives you a sense that Morphy was both far ahead of his time in opening theory, and competitive with anyone alive today tactically.

The games in these chapters are (mainly) real struggles, rather than the dashing brilliancies we are used to seeing from Morphy. Shibut explains, "The effect of such presentations in countless beginner's texts has been to reduce Morphy's games to a collection of fables. Their moral is understood to be something about developing pieces, or the evils of chasing pawns in the opening. Whatever the pedagogical value of such portrayals, the games, so presented, can't help but appear shallow compared to modern grandmaster warfare." Shibut wants to show us what Morphy was really capable of when tested.

Then there is a fun chapter on Morphy's blunders, showing him to be fallible afterall. And there are examinations of his opening and endgame knowledge. After that comes a complete compilation, hundreds of complete (but completely un-annotated) Morphy games. This might be the most useless part of the book, since you could get at least sparse annotation from Sargeant.

One thing this book is great for is the section on games at odds. It amounts to a treatise on how to play such games, analyzing various opening strategies. If you want to play an odds game (eg remove the f-pawn before the game) against a much weaker opponent, I suggest that you take a look.

There are essays on Morphy by Steinitz, Znosko-Borovsky, and Alekhine. And finally, Shibut provides several indices: Morphy's openings, his opponents, and games not involving Morphy. However, there is no subject index, nor endnotes on sources.

After reading this book, I began to wonder how Morphy would fare against Fischer in a King's Gambit, each at their peak. Clearly, his chess was far deeper than I'd imagined.

One drawback: Although the notation is algebraic, it lacks capture (x) and check (+) symbols. This makes it very difficult to follow without a board.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best book ever written on the great Paul Morphy........1999-09-28

Finally a book that sets the record straight and puts Morphy in the proper context. If you are sick of chess anthologies that provide one or two of Morphy's skittles games and try to pass this off as indicative of the style and quality of 19th century chess, you are going to love this book. Mr. Shibut totally destroys the popular misconception that Morphy was the "missing link" between Anderssen and Steinitz. The concept that Wilhelm Steinitz enlightened the chess world with new and revolutionary ideas of positional play is shown to be utter nonsense. By analyzing Morphy's serious games as well as those of other great 19th century masters Mr. Shibut does a fine job of showing that Steinitz's "theories" offered little that was new to the understanding of chess at the time. The main theme of this book is that Morphy's strength was not due to some unique understanding of the game that was later articulated to the world by Wilhelm Steinitz. Paul Morphy was simply the best chess player of the 19th century. No more no less. I highly recommend this book to any serious student of the game.

Doug Stevenson knows how to create a winning presentation, and even better, he knows how to show us what he does. His book, "Never Be Boring Again," gives clear, step-by-step advice on the sure-fire way to craft presentations that will wow your audiences. He has organized his advice into a method which all speakers can employ. He himself is not one bit boring, and his own presentations are dynamite. The sweet success of his book is that he reveals his method to readers in a clear, easy-to-follow format. We still have to work and practice, but in his book we see what to do. He is the master!

1 out of 5 stars Shallow, repetitive, no great insights but plenty of fluff.......2007-01-01

I am preparing a PowerPoint class for people who already know the mechanics of PowerPoint but need a class on how to better design slides and prepare a presentation. One of the topics will be preparing a script using story-telling techniques. I thought this book would offer some good advice, especially since the reviews were so good. I was sorely disappointed.

Ironically, this book bored me. I admit that I am a tough audience, but if you are a corporate trainer or speaker addressing a sophisticated, intelligent audience, the advice in this book may do more harm than good. The stories are not very interesting and I don't think it's good advice to tell readers they need to act out or pantomime parts of a story. That may work for some, but there are other ways by which a speaker can enliven a presentation or a talk. This book would be more appropriate for people doing info-commercials than for corporate speakers. In fact, as I was reading it, the book reminded me of the exaggerated gestures and pasted-on smiles that info-commercial people affect.

A great example of how stories are used to enliven a presentation and illustrate points is the book Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. I am listening to the book on CD while I do my daily walks. (I checked it out at the local library.) Gladwell (not the most exciting person in the world) had to use stories to get his points across and he does a masterful job. You will learn more about using stories from Blink than from Never Be Boring Again. And you won't be bored!

I enjoyed the author's style and found several useful tips on improving my presentations. Given the accepted wisdom that an audience learns more from a speaker's visual presentation then his/her verbal presentation, his advice concerning acting out a presentation was very helpful.
I have a complaint about the quality of the book itself. After I had been reading the book off and on for about a week, the book's binding gave out and chucks of the book began falling off the binding.

5 out of 5 stars Inspire Your Audience.......2006-01-28

"To be nobody but yourself - in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else- means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting. ~E. E. Cummings

Doug Stevenson is the creator of the Story Theater Method. As a master storytelling coach, he teaches the secrets of telling compelling stories and also explains how to add humor and fun to your presentation.

The quotes in this book are especially intriguing, especially the one by Virginia Satir. In just a few sentences, she explains how communication skills can determine the quality of your life.

How do you choose a story?
                      Where can you find stories?
What are the seven types of stories?
What can you say that your listeners won't expect?

Doug Stevenson teaches you how to entertain all while getting your message across. I remember the first time I gave a speech and said a line that caused the entire audience to laugh. It was shocking to me when it happened, it made my day and it was something I never forgot. While I am much more of an introvert, that extrovert moment in my life was definitely due to the fact that I said something the audience didn't expect.

This book will teach you all the essential skills for communicating with an audience and they will learn while they laugh.
