Book Description
Film Criticism. Screenplays. Internationally renowned director Michelangelo Antonioni (L'Aventura, Blow-Up, The Passenger), who has said that his thoughts "are almost always films" while his films are records of "thoughts in the making," here offers an eclectic collection of pieces ranging from short screenplays, to personal memoirs, to incisive meditations on the nature of cinema. The cumulative effect is a sort of montage of the workings of the author's mind, his thought-films and film-thoughts, projected simultaneously (in a clear and precise translation by Andrew Taylor) onto the white screen of the page. Antonioni, a seminal figure in modern cinema and one of the greatest Italian filmmakers, received the Academy Award for lifetime achievement in 1995.
Book Description
This superb anthology coordinates with The Norton Recordings (4- or 8-CD set) and provides scores for most of the works discussed in The Enjoyment of Music (Standard, Shorter, and Chronological versions). Orchestral scores and scores for instrumental chamber pieces are highlighted, enabling students to follow along after minimal instruction. Each score is accompanied by brief analytical commentary.

Voices of the Buffalo Soldier: Records, Reports, and Recollections of Military Life and Service in the West
ASIN: 0842050795 |
Book Description
This supplement presents over 2,000 new and nearly 1,000 revised biographies of black servicemen, giving the researcher not only glimpses of individual lives but also documentation of the variety of African-American experiences within and outside the army.
Book Description
It is almost impossible now to imagine the prestigious position Charles Horton Cooley (1864-1929) held within the founding generation of American sociologists. His seminal work on human communication, social organization, and public opinion stimulated and guided much of early American sociological thought.
Cooley's work relating self and community is now more relevant than ever to the problems of understanding and directing modern democratic societies. Cooley applied the ideas of pragmatism to developing a systematic way of approaching social action, social change, and social order; he used these interrelated theories to analyze the social problems and cultural crises of the age. According to Cooley, social change is a fragile, interactive process that, due to constantly arising problems of action, requires ongoing scrutiny by the public. This collection of Cooley's best work is an important contribution not only to the history of ideas—especially to the origin of modern sociological theory— but also to the current public debate on civil society, community, and democracy.

Brian Newbould brings together the biographical data of Schubert's life with the music that he composed. The book is both readable and informative, the work of a professor of music at the University of Hull in Britain whose biographical data describes him as a composer, conductor, pianist, and lecturer. Newbould has been so bold as to finish the Unfinished Symphony and other of Schubert's uncompleted works, and he has a deep understanding of the man and his music.
Book Description
Of all the great composers, none, not even Mozart, has been so dogged by myth and misunderstanding as Schubert. Since the 1920s, when the musical Blossom Time hit the stage, the notion of Schubert as a pudgy, love-lorn Bohemian schwammerl (mushroom) scribbling gemülich tunes on the back of menus in idle moments has never been quite eradicated. But in this major new biography (the first comprehensive work on Schubert in over fifty years) Brian Newbould lays to rest the stereotype of the composer plucking melodies out of the air, relying on instinct more than well-honed craft. Instead he paints a vivid and compelling portrait of a man who was compulsively dedicated to his art, a composer so prolific that he produced roughly one thousand works in an eighteen year period.
Gifted with an intuitive know-how, coupled with a Mozartian facility for composition, Schubert combined the relish and wonder of an amateur with the discipline and technical rigor of a professional. He moved quickly and comfortably among genres, and sometimes composed directly into score; but many pieces required painstaking revision before they satisfied his growing self-criticism. Examining afresh the enigmas surrounding Schubert's religious outlook, his loves, his sexuality, his illness and death, Newbould offers above all a celebration of a unique genius, an idiosyncratic composer of an astonishing body of powerful, enduring music.

Good Schubert..........2007-02-12
.
Newbould's reading of Schubert's life and art is about the best book currently available. Combine with John Reed's out of print Schubert.

Book Description
This informative book teaches writing and understanding Baroque counterpoint. Unique in approach, BaroqueCounterpoint uses extensive quotations and examples from contemporaneous treatises; the authors explain the principles underlying the compositional techniques of the period, introducing readers to the widest range of composers of any of the books on the market today. It emphasizes singing and improvisation as well as writing.
The book is divided into two comprehensive parts, the strict style and the free style. Step-by-step exercises lead to writing fugue, the apotheosis of Western music.
An excellent desk reference for musicians and composers.

Product Description
Schubert in the European Imagination: Fin-de-Siècle Vienna examines the composer's historical and cultural reception by Viennese modernists. By 1900, issues of gender had crossed with those of nationalism, especially in the city that came to consider Schubert as its favorite musical son. As Messing here explains and explores in rich detail, composers, writers, and visual artists manipulated the conventions of the composer and gender in ways that critiqued the very culture that had created this image. In order to expose the hypocrisy of social relationships, painter Gustav Klimt and writers Arthur Schnitzler, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Peter Altenberg exploited the collision between innocence and sexuality, and Schubert was a readily familiar sign for the former. The composer Arnold Schoenberg substituted his own formulation of Schubert in place of the older, popular conceptions of the composer, adding him to an illustrious list of figures whose significance he sought to redesign.

Book Description
It's instant fun. Activities to do in minutes. Super-quick games to roll out at a moment's notice. Filling a need that every parent of young children has, 324 Anytime, Anywhere Activities! for Kids is a perfect antidote to those "booooring" car rides, endless waits in the doctor's office, restaurant fidgetiness, and assorted child-unfriendly chores. And you don't need to bring along any special props.
Several years ago, Cynthia Copeland shared the wisdom of her three children in Really Important Stuff My Kids Have Taught Me, which has 356,000 copies in print. Now she's written a parents' survival guide for those times when kids seem more at wit's end than wise. In the car? Try Red Car, Blue Car, Old Car, New Car; How Far, How Fast?; Raindrop Race; or I Heard It!, where the first one to hear the secret word on the radio wins. While waiting for the pediatrician, try Sock' Em, Cents of Hearing, or Body Double--draw the outline of your child lying on the examination table paper, then let him or her fill it in. Stuck at the bus stop? Gather the kids to play Simon Does, Knot Happening, or Blind Man Walking. There are mind benders, story-telling games (including It Was a Dark and Stormy Night)--in all, hundreds of ways guaranteed to engage their imagination and lift their spirits. Not to mention yours.
Customer Reviews:
Greatest little book!!.......2007-05-26
This book has helped with both my 3 yr old and my 13 yr old!!! It is a great little book with loads of ideas!
Creating Fun.......2007-01-15
'Boring' is one bad word around our house. Creative and intelligent children can create fun where ever they may be and without a lot of props. This book is full of good ideas for doing just that. We keep ours in the car to give us ideas when we are driving, waiting or just plain out of good ideas to keep us occupied. I would highly recommend it for any family.
Excellent family activity book.......2005-08-18
This is a really well written and beautifully designed book. Each of the activities is genuinely fun and kid-pleasing, and not something you've seen printed over and over again in parenting and women's magazines. Even the categories of games are fun: e.g., waiting room games, hairdresser games, bus stop games, waiting-in-line games. The author put a lot of thought into this handy, purse-sized activity book and it shows. This is the best family activity book I've found yet.
No-whining zone.......2005-01-31
I received this book as a gift, and carry it in my purse for quick reference. The games have entertained my 4-year-old daughter--and me!--at the doctor's office, in restaurants, in the grocery store, and in the car.
The games are easy, fun, and much more creative than anything I could come up with on my own. (And it sure beats the whining.)
Book Description
Marketers spend well over $185 million in campus-specific advertising and promotions alone. The college market is one of the most lucrative groups targeted by marketers and advertisers today-and for good reason. Considered the heart and soul of the youth market, it encompasses college-bound high school graduates, current college students, recent college grads, parents of college students, alumni, college faculty, administrators, and institutional buyers. Currently enrolled college students alone represent 15.6 million voracious consumers who spend an estimated $200 billion annually.
Whether you're an experienced college marketer or new to the field, Marketing to the Campus Crowd is required reading for any company eager to boost its bottom line and establish long-term brand loyalty. Industry expert and consultant David A. Morrison discusses the three most common mistakes, over 22 different traditional and emerging marketing channels, ""Best in Class"" case studies, and the underlying drivers of market behavior. In addition, Marketing to the Campus Crowd features:
* Key demographic and psychographic data
* Campus trends
* Special chapters on the pre- and post-college market
* Predictions of future paradigm shifts
* A seven-point checklist for developing and implementing a successful marketing mix
* The author's proprietary four-step IRRLe (""early"") Method to harness the power of early adoption as a competitive advantage
Customer Reviews:
PHENOMENAL BOOK (5 STARS).......2006-05-26
Morrison has delivered the irrefutable "how to" book for marketers, advertisers, and promoters interested in tapping the student market. His balance of strategic insight, wit, and key market stats is right on-target. (This guy really knows his stuff!) The case studies are highly informative and the strategic recommendations that Morrison provides based on his obvious experience is timeless. I wholeheartedly recommend this book as it's a masterpiece for its genre.
AWESOME BOOK! Totally Hits the Mark! (Five Stars).......2006-03-31
Morrison has written the definitive bible for student marketers. Don't let the title mislead you, "Campus Crowd" is just as on-target for marketers interested in teens through twentysomethings as it is for the college market proper. In fact, I'm ordering several books for our ad agency to bring them up to speed. The author devotes a tremendous amount of the book to strategy and infuses the text with just the right balance of stats. The examples, he calls them "Best in Class" case studies, are perfect and there are dedicated sections to both the pre- and post-college segments. Fantastic book. Highly recommended without hesitation.
Amazing! A Fantastic Read and An Excellent Desk Top Resource.......2006-02-13
Given how much college students spend, and their obvious influence on other desirable market segments, Morrison's book is a "must have" for marketers, advertisers, salespeople, and administrators that want to optimize their decision-making with this group. (I actually heard about this book from an overseas colleague of mine.) The author's knowledge is self-evident and the book is a perfect balance of information as well as strategic insight. Morrison even dedicates chapters to future trends (such as privatization and non-traditional students) as well as chapters on targeting high school students, alumni, school buyers, faculty, parents, and recent grads. It's one of the few books that I keep permanently on my desk both to stimulate my thinking as well as to reference key data. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Excellent Resource (5 Stars).......2006-02-07
"Marketing to the Campus Crowd" is an intelligent and highly insightful book from someone that knows young adult marketing cold. Every page oozes the author's obvious expertise with this age group and the book even includes separate chapters on both pre-college students as well as the larger young adult market. As one who works for an ad agency that target's Generation Y, this book is a MUST HAVE! It is both an excellent source for strategic inspiration as well as an overall "how to" guide on tackling this coveted, yet highly elusive, consumer market. Thanks, David, for sharing your wisdom and your wit. Both are deeply appreciated!
Perfect Book for Back-to-School Marketing/Advertising/Sales.......2005-08-27
Highly recommend this excellent book for marketing pros interested in successfully targeting the student market. Fantastic book! Perfect balance of statistics, great insights on the student psyche, and extensive examples of marketers that are getting it right. Morrison knows his stuff cold and it shows on every page. Can't go wrong with this book, but you can easily go wrong without it! Totally original as there's no other book in Europe (or the States) like it. Five stars. Simply outstanding!!
