    1 out of 5 stars Complete Crud.......2005-05-22

This book is an absolute joke. There are so many misspellings and grammar errors - the photos are completely low budget and cheezy black & white xeroxes - the band did not contribute any info or interviews - the majority of info came from road technicians - which isn't such a bad thing because I respect and love both Kiki Ebsen and Bobby Ludwig - it just seems odd that instead of interviewing the band Chicago and their current and past band members, the "author" interviews their crew. I also wonder what is Ben Joseph's real name because I don't take this guy's credentials very seriously. This book proves ANYONE can put out a book, sell it and sit back and call yourself an author. The book cover is nice and colorful but everything else about this book sucks the giant cosmic weenie. With lots of love, poodle puppies and fuzzy giggles, dawaynebailey.com

2 out of 5 stars Chicago: Feelin' Stronger... An enjoyable read.......2003-05-29

Ben Joseph's "Chicago:Feelin' Stronger Every Day" is an enjoyable read, and not without merit. It's been many years since I bought my first Chicago album, and I still love their music (mostly the early stuff CTA - Chicago VII). This book fills in a lot of holes in my memory, and has inspired me to go back to the albums and give another listen to some of the material not on my home-made minidisc compilations. I enjoyed the brief glimpses into what was going on behind the scenes of the group's early days; the book disappoints, however, in the one area that is most important to me: it fails to provide much discussion of the music itself. Chicago's sound is distinctive. The arrangements cannot be confused with any other horn band. A discussion, even non-technical, of how this sound was achieved and how they integrated all of the disparate elements was what I was hoping for.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the true Chicago fan!!.......2002-09-27

Over the past 25 years I have seen Chicago in Concert over 50 times. I simply love their music and I am truly amazed at the fact that they have been around for over 35 years.

I bought this book because I thought it was going to be a history lesson on the band and it is but it is also so much more.

Covering the band from the beginning with members Terry Kath and Robert Lamm to the days of Peter Cetera to the lastet members Tris Imboden adn Keith Howland.

The book covers every album including Chicago 26 "live in Concert". I am most impressed and hope as the band continues another edition will come out.

If you love Chicago Like I do, then you have to get this book it is as sweet as the music of the band.

    1 out of 5 stars What a ripoff............2002-01-08

I was looking forward to this book with great anticipation and was severely disappointed when it came out. There is little or no new material here that any good Chicago fan wouldn't already know and there are quite a few glaring factual omissions. The book totally ignores the 8 years of contributions made by guitarist Dawayne Bailey while spouting pages of info about Kiki Ebsen, a backup keyboard player on one tour. Most of the information in here seems to have been gleaned from the squeaky-clean view of the band that can be found on their web site. I was hoping for a book with a little more meat to it, not something that looks like it was published in someone's back room.

    5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2001-10-05

This book is a great Chicago companion with lots of great, rare pictures, and indepth commentary on each Chicago album, that allow brief glimpses at the songwriting processes and little known facts. An excellent book!

Jerry Bridges has done a masterful job again in this book. He describes in simple language what the fear of God is, and then proceeds to explain ways that you and I can have it be an active part of our lives. God is a loving God, but we must not forget the respect and awe, even fear that we are to have for Him. Jerry Bridges does an awesome job of that in a book that is easy to understand and full of scripture.

THE JOY OF FEARING GOD by Jerry Bridges is an excellent book on an often over-looked topic in modern Christianity. In the first chapter he states his premise clearly: "There was a time when committed Christians were known as God-fearing people. This was a badge of honor. But somewhere along the way we lost it. Now the idea of fearing God, if thought of at all, seems like a relic from the past. That's to our detriment. The fear of God is actually as relevant today as it was in bygone generations" (1). In the remaining fourteen chapters he defines, describes, and illustrates what it means for Christians to individually and corporately to fear God in their lives. Chapter titles include "Beyond Measure, Beyond Compare" describing God's greatness, "Transcendent Majesty" describing God's holiness, "He Is Lord" describing God's sovereignty, and "He Is Worthy" describing how essential the fear of the Lord is in our worship.

    Product Description

The Bridge is Love blends parallel stories, one a true memoir of events on Earth, and a second, imaginative parable of complementary happenings in Heaven. The storyteller is a young boy, Scotty, whose life is ended suddenly in a tragic highway accident. He enters into a new life as an angel-child in Heaven from where he views his family's grief and recovery. The story spans thirteen months during which the power of love and faith allows the past and present to join together and promotes healing. The bereaved are enabled to resume positive, hopeful lives.

The factual, poignant account of the journey through intense sadness and loss emphasizes the importance of a strong network of family and friends to enhance the mourners' resilience. Extended family members, as well as treasured teachers and friends, come alive as their joys, sorrows, strengths and weaknesses are revealed. Throughout the story there is humor and hopefulness. Life becomes more cherished as challenges are confronted and overcome.

Scotty tells the tale with pure innocence, characteristic of a young child, but reflecting wisdom and understanding gained viewing the human condition through the passage of time from his heavenly vantage point. He shares his memories and observations of earthly events, at the same time recounting his experiences as a newcomer in a Heaven where love and happiness abound. His new family includes a long-deceased great-grandmother, his beloved Uncle Alex, and a new best friend, Steve. A heavenly neighbor turns out to be his mother's teacher and mentor, Uncle Bob, who introduces Scotty to the great humanitarian, Albert Schweitzer.

Time, confrontation of grief, support of family and friends, faith and hope - these are the ingredients of recovery after loss and reclamation of true joy in the living of each day.

    5 out of 5 stars Transforming grief.......2007-02-04

Cheron Mayhall's book is moving, powerful, sweet, uplifting, magical, poignant, and of course, searingly sad. For those of us who have not experienced the death of a child, fear is painfully vivid when we hear about others' loss. It is hard to imagine surviving, psychologically. For those who have experienced this grief, I imagine Cheron's book as a wonderful, healing, transforming comfort. Cheron helps all of us make some sense of this experience, from the inside out. From darkness to sunshine.

5 out of 5 stars The Bridge is Love.......2007-01-30

Dr. Mayhall has used the deep grief of losing a child to craft a narrative that lifts one's spirit while creating introspection and empathy. Scottie's story is touching and encouraging, filled with life's emtions, sorrow and joy.

5 out of 5 stars Comfort, Hope and Joy.......2007-01-01

"The Bridge is Love" brings me comfort, hope and joy. Dr. Cheron Mayhall and I met in college and have remained friends for 46 years. When Scotty died, it was very tragic and sad. However, "The Bridge is Love" has helped the author bridge this saddness to acceptance of his death. It will also bring comfort, hope and joy to others who have lost young children tragically. Anne Kask

5 out of 5 stars Links of Healing...Links of Love.......2006-10-25

As a mother who has also lost a child, I was hard put to pick which of Cheron Mayhall's many links of healing spoke to me the most. But reading, and living through her story, The Bridge Is Love, I found the 'love link of love' resounding in my heart many times over: We can be closer to our loved one by giving more to life, mutually guaranteeing ourselves a place in each other's hearts forever, regardless of time and place. Plus we spread that hope of life beyond ourselves to others which, like the sun "as we journey towards it, casts the shadow of our burdens behind us (Samuel Smiles, from The Bridge Is Love, p. 126)."

I suggest that The Bridge Is Love is but one of many healing ways Cheron Joy Mayhall will reach and comfort fellow grievers on their road to healing and restoration.

5 out of 5 stars This is not a 'sad' book.......2006-06-12

This is a book of hope and love that is sure to strike a chord within you. Not only is the plot creative and engaging, but the story helps you realise that life does go on after the death of a loved one and that there is a way through the pain and grief.

Mayhall is clearly a talented writer with a gift for capturing the emotions and thoughts that pull us through traumatic, life-changing experiences. Her book is beautifully written with carefully crafted narrative that reminded me a little of `The Five People you Meet in Heaven'.

Death, especially the death of a child, is a subject most people do not want to think about, but this book bravely tackles it head-on in a tale that is by turns painful, tender - and yes, even joyful. This is not a `sad' book but more of a journey through the process of personal growth. I would encourage anyone who fears or confronts death or bereavement - which let's face it, is all of us - to read it.

5 out of 5 stars Fear God? Yes!.......2006-05-05

The joy of fearing God is such an alien expression to many of us. It was to me before reading this book. The expression "fear God" is all over the bible, and yet I thought of fear of God in negative terms. Not anymore.

In this book Jerry Bridges digs deep into the bible to prove beyond a doubt that our greatest joy and fulfillment can only be found in a healthy fear of God. It does not mean that we should always be cowering waiting for the smiting hand of an angry, celestial father who delights to abuse his children. Bridges thesis rests on the fact that God is so huge, awesome, holy, and other than us that most of the people who encountered and loved Him in the bible were brought to their knees in awe. We have lost this awe. Bridges sets out to show us why that is a bad thing and how to solve the problem.

Read this book for an often missing perspective that is sorely needed in the Church today.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2006-04-26

This book really puts into perspective who we are and who our Creator is. Jerry uses a lot of Scripture which is why this book was so convicting of how we draw close to our Maker. He draws out the correct view of the fear of God and not how some others see their god, such as the Muslims. They literally fear Allah in an unhealthy way where He will smite them at any time.

Our fear of our Jehovah, is a reverential fear that is brought forth in this book. Very easy read, but don't make the assumption that because it is an easy read that it is not full of theological insight and depth. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A thriller for the christian.......2003-06-10

The beauty of this book is that it is so down to earth about matters that are so lofty and beyong human understanding. Bridges writes in an easily digestible manner. Relating the fear of God through scriptures and short stories and even points to some helpful devotional-like activities to help worship this fear-inspiring God. This book does not address the issue of fear of God's wrath because the book makes it quite clear this is not a "godly" fear of God. Bridges gets the reader in touch with a sovereign, loving, merciful, immeasurably immense God whom we should trust, love and fear because of his soveriegnty, love, mercy, and immensity... NOT because of his wrath.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but missing some important observations.......1999-01-22

I enjoyed Bridges lofty view of God and his easy writing style. However, I came to the book looking for more and didn't get it. Bridges should have developed the most important basis for fearing God in more detail. We reap what we sow. Paul Reminds us "do not be deceived, the wrath of God visits those who do such things." I put this book down disappointed that the author did not develpt this important theme. I came to this book hungry to know why I should fear God, and came away partially satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars The book you MUST read to know God more deeply........1998-09-07

"The Joy of Fearing God" is a great book to understand how we should have the proper relationship with God. It started by talking theological doctrine that sounded very biblical based. Then, the author gave us some practical ways to exercise the knowledge we learn through the book. I had some dry time spiritually before I started reading this book. However, I forced myself to read this book to know what "the fear of God" really means. By reading through this book, God spoke to me and strengthened my faith. God prepared me to go through some huge trial happened recently in my life by using this book. If you have some doubt about God's love or God's goodness, read this book before you back off. However, it's very clear and understandable even for someone who doesn't like reading. Even English is my second language, it effected me so strongly. I especially recommend this book to Youth and College students. Also, it's great for parents. I have some disagreement with the author about the authority of employer and government, yet it doesn't change the value of this book. Please read it prayerfully and start having the Joy of fearing God! By J.I.

From the first sip of your morning coffee to the last sheep you count at night, you will face an average of 23 adversities, predicts author Paul G. Stoltz in this follow-up to the best-selling The Adversity Quotient. The key to coping, he says, lies in improving your Adversity Quotient--"the measurable, precise, and unconscious way you respond to adversity." Here, Stoltz applies AQ to the challenges of working in the "entrepreneurial, high-velocity New Economy."

First, he details the bad news: AQ is hardwired into you during your youth by parental models and early experiences. But the good news--that your AQ can be improved and put to work on your job--is the promise this book capably delivers. Stoltz, an organizational communications expert who has measured the Adversity Quotient of 100,000 people, is fond of using mountain-climbing metaphors to describe elements of organizational adversity. For example, low AQers are "quitters" who have given up the climb or "campers" who have found a safe, shady spot. But for the resilient high AQers, "the climbers," there ain't no mountain high enough.

The lower your AQ, the more of a toll job stress will take, warns Stoltz, whose assessment tools for measuring AQ are as detailed as his strategies for creating a "climbing culture" in your organization. The pages are packed with maps, self-assessments, specific strategies, and smart end-of-chapter summaries. This hands-on approach is undermined at times by too many metaphors, acronyms, and lists, as well as a tendency to oversell AQ as a predictor of success. Still, for executives, managers, and employees alike, The Adversity Quotient @ Work is a supportive and strategic home-schooling course for coping with the demands of today's workplace.--Barbara Mackoff

                Book Description

In 1997, Paul Stoltz unleashed a revolution with his groundbreaking book Adversity Quotient: Turning Obstacles into Opportunities, introducing the concept of the Adversity Quotient into public consciousness. Now, in Adversity Quotient @ Work, Stoltz applies the principles of his brilliant theory to the uniquely challenging environment of the workplace.

AQ is a measure of one's ability to handle adversity. Those who can't become easily overwhelmed and emotional, then pull back and stop trying; those who can handle adversity become the leaders of today and tomorrow. Adversity Quotient @ Work clearly demonstrates how workers and managers can use this concept of the AQ to their own advantage, and to the benefit of their clients and customers.

Adversity Quotient @ Work teaches listeners how to hire and retain highly motivated and talented workers, develop employees to their full potential, and create a leadership culture that encourages all to put forth their best efforts and maximize their performance capabilities. Based on real research performed with thousands of managers and members of the workforce on the front lines of hundreds of businesses, it will quickly become any corporation's indispensable handbook for success.

                5 out of 5 stars Adversity Quotient @ Work - Works!.......2001-01-01

1 out of 5 stars Pop Psychology Masquerading As Science.......2000-12-11

Very, very little science in this one and one of many current books taking on a simple metaphor and developing a whole theory around it (...life is a climb, don't quit...or how about, life is like fishing, try different lures each day...or, life is like sharpening a pencil---sharp points work effectively, but sharpen too much, and the pencil grows short...). I went to a writer's workshop and the consultant there stated that the quickest way to publish a book is to think up one of these silly metaphors and write a self-help book around it. Maybe the author of this one was in the same workshop! Anyway, my advice is for readers to "climb a real mountain" and read good science---not this turkey.

4 out of 5 stars WHAT ARE YOU DOING WRONG?.......2000-11-25

Not moving up the corporate ladder as quickly as you think you should? Was your brilliant idea or presention rejected? Were you overlooked for a promotion? Why? This book attempts to answer these questions. Author, Paul Stoltz has identified three types of people in the workplace, and how they react to setbacks. First there are quitters who are bitter and avoid change; secondly, campers who settle into comfort zones, and thirdly, climbers who are relentless in the pursuit of their goals. He emphasizes that "climbers" are the achievers. The book is is filled with self assessment charts and maps for strategies. But the key, it seems is perserverance not paranoia; focused effort not whining; and setting realistic goals, then taking action. Employers and employees will welcome this "window" into how to succeed in the business world. Oh yes, this author writes about work-related stress. After you read this book, take a look at "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff for Teens", by Dr. Richard Carlson. It has keys to success for everyone not just teens; and coping with stress is a universal challenge. What is your Adversity Quotient?

3 out of 5 stars AQ Intro for High Performance at Work.......2000-11-18

'AQ@Work' is aimed at consultants, students, or those in business who want to create a structured reaction mindset (initially consciously incompetent, to unconsciously competent) to performing better individually and in teams in the workplace.

The attractively illustrated action-oriented chapters span: Expanding your capacity- the human operating system (Quitters, Campers & Climbers); The science of AQ; Measuring Your AQ; The CORE of a climber (Control, Ownership, Reach, Endurance); Developing Response-Able Climbers (LEAD= Listen to Response, Establish Accountability, Analyze the Evidence, and Do Something); Coaching and Mentoring Climbers; Defining and Finding Climbers; Hiring Climbers; Building Climbing Teams; Building A Climbing Culture.

Strengths include: the presentation (illustrations, tables, summaries, action lists); the lively engaging style; interesting "humans as computers with software" analogies; the usability of materials for in-company training; and the credibility of AQ itself (data set and application group spanning over 100,000 people Worldwide across cultures, sectors, and professions).

Weaknesses include: the lack of references; a need more anecdotes or tabulated quantified success stories (rather than repetitive, almost consulting sales pitch); needs 25% less page count for content; dull 2nd half becomes a "verbatim training notes doc" (to this reviewer); lack of depth to "science" (e.g. misses many credible individual/ team motivation/performance models e.g.2 misses communications models & significance to team performance); offers unsubstantiated contradictions with standard psychology view to internalizing/ externalizing problems and subsequent personal growth (or not); and anecdotes sometimes abstract/remote from complexities of real work environments. Interestingly, Cypress Semiconductor is hailed here as a success story, and as a failure in Pfeffer's recent OK "Hidden Value" and OK "Knowing Doing-Gap" texts.

Alternatives include: Pfeffer's efforts; Goleman's OK "Working with Emotional Intelligence"; and Schwartz's inspirational "Magic of Thinking Big". At the "quality-end" look at: the superb "First to the Future- on Active Leadership" by Willi Railo (rigorous proven methods to coach & lead Olympic-standard people, applicable to all) (ISBN82-991169-5-3 Norbok A/S 1995); and Jensen's punchy 'Simplicity' (ISBN 073820210X 2000). More peripherally look at: "The Time Management PocketBook" and "Yoga for Dummies" offering approaches for motivation, focus, and action to being better balanced as well as corporate citizens.

Overall 'AQ@Work' is only worthwhile- but it could be amongst the best with more rigor & science, less words, and more success statistics.
