Book Description

From Elvis and a hound dog wearing matching tuxedos and the comic adventures of artificially produced bands to elaborate music videos and contrived reality-show contests, television—as this critical look brilliantly shows—has done a superb job of presenting the energy of rock in a fabulously entertaining but patently "fake" manner. The dichotomy of "fake" and "real" music as it is portrayed on television is presented in detail through many generations of rock music: the Monkees shared the charts with the Beatles, Tupac and Slayer fans voted for corny American Idols, and shows like Shindig! and Soul Train somehow captured the unhinged energy of rock far more effectively than most long-haired guitar-smashing acts. Also shown is how TV has often delighted in breaking the rules while still mostly playing by them: Bo Diddley defied Ed Sullivan and sang rock and roll after he had been told not to, the Chipmunks' subversive antics prepared kids for punk rock, and things got out of hand when Saturday Night Live invited punk kids to attend a taping of the band Fear. Every aspect of the idiosyncratic history of rock and TV and their peculiar relationship is covered, including cartoon rock, music programming for African American audiences, punk on television, Michael Jackson's life on TV, and the tortured history of MTV and its progeny.

2 out of 5 stars Where is this guy coming from?.......2007-09-17

I'm three-quarters of the way through this thing and I still don't know where this author is coming from. Sometimes he seems to embrace the tastes of the supposed masses, other times he puts them down and embraces the aesthetics of the fringes.
The author also reaches some downright offensive conclusions: according to him, the reaction of the baby-boomer generation to the killing of the four students at Kent State "exposed much of the peace-and-love generation as bandwagon jumpers whose dissidence was merely a fad that they were not willing to die for. Excuse me?
Plus Mr. Austen, Fanny was not "a lesbian rock group". I don't know where the hell you got that from.

4 out of 5 stars Mr. Rector seems to be talking about a different book.......2006-07-31

I just finished reading TV A-Go-Go and don't recall any "claims of being the definitive book on its subject," as Mr. Rector claims. In fact, Mr. Austen's introduction states "Obviously,a comprehensive overview of all rock on TV is imposible... No one writer could cover everything and nobody would want to read a book that did."
Apparently Mr. Rector wanted an encyclopedia of rock on TV, rather than a series of entertaining essays with thought-provoking theses. I'm sorry he didn't get what he wanted, but this was a very worthwhile read.
Further, I could find no claim in the book "that punk rock only became popular after Fear appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1981." In fact, Austen writes: "After polling more than a hundred musicians, zine editors, and fans active in hardcore, none of them cited Fear's Saturday Night Live appearance as their point of entry into the scene (the most frequently cited TV moment that led pollsters to punk/hardcore was actually Devo on Saturday Night Live in 1978)... One reason may be that very few people were watching SNL at that point... the evidence of its realness--the downtime between songs, the lack of distance between audience and artists, and the imperfect performance--may have been unappealing to those not familiar with the hardcore experience."
Mr. Rector should talk about the book that exists, not the book he's (for better as well as worse) imagining.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading.......2005-11-19

Jake Austin (publisher of "Rocktober," the finest retro-Rock & Roll magazine since the death of "Kicks") has really done us all a great service with this book. Most of the other reviewers here have already detailed the enlightening and fun to read contents, so I won't belabor the point--except to repeat that it's well-written, extremely entertaining and informative, and an essential addition to any serious Rock & Roll fan's music library. Buy this book now, and if you're lucky enough to ever run across some back issues of "Rocktober," pawn whatever is necessary to get them into your greedy hooks.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of pop culture archaeology. .......2005-10-18

Jake Austen not only captured what was important in the partnership between television and rock music down through the years, but he does so in entertaining fashion. His soundly expressed theories and crisp, no-B.S. writing style, shed a whole new light on the sometimes deluded expectations of both the genre and it's fans. Filled with detailed information, sly wit, and unique insights, TV-a-Go-Go is the best book ever written on this subject.

1 out of 5 stars Not Worth Your Money.......2005-10-02

TV-a-Go-Go : Rock on TV from American Bandstand to American Idol by Jake Austen is about the history of rock music on television from the 1950's to the present day. It covers the rock music TV scene from Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" show through the troubled "American Idol." Its author is Jake Austen, producer of the popular Chic-A-Go-Go show on Chicagoland Public Access cable channnels, so he is in a position to know about this subject.

Unfortunately, TV-a-Go-Go : Rock on TV from American Bandstand to American Idol falls well short of the mark. It is one of those "quickie" books that takes only a superficial look at its subject. Many of its assertions are questionable. For instance, Austen claims that punk rock only became popular after the band Fear was on "Saturday Night Live" in 1981. Actually, punk rock was popular before 1981 and it was the result of that popularity that Fear made it on the show.

Austen claims that many classic cartoons such as "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and "The Banana Splits" were examples of rock TV. Well, this writer grew up watching those shows and the only way that you can classify those shows as rock music oriented is if your definition of rock music is so broad as to include everything from the William Tell Overture aka the "Lone Ranger" music to Garth Brooks. In other words, its a ridiculous assertion.

There are other problems with this book. There is practically nothing about the sleazy likes of Alan Freed and the payola scandals that shook the rock music scene during the late 1950's and the early 1960's. There is also nothing about the spread of perversion and immorality into rock music, which began as clean music. There is little about the local and regional rock TV shows, which is strange since the author is the producer of one such show.

The basic problem with TV-a-Go-Go : Rock on TV from American Bandstand to American Idol , is that for all its claims of being the definitive book on its subject, there really is little new about its subject. Almost everything in it was originally published in other, better books. You would be much better off hunting down those books in your local public library rather than plunking down your hard earned money for this book.

TV-a-Go-Go : Rock on TV from American Bandstand to American Idol is a book about an interesting subject that is in itself less than interesting.

With plenty of detail for Sting fans of all ages, Sting: Demolition Man traces the rise of young Brit Gordon Sumner to the international pop icon known as Sting. Focusing continually on the man's personal and professional growth, this is no sleazy-tabloid type of biography; instead, his variety of talents, beliefs, and musical styles are shown against the backdrop of his personal life. The transformation from irritable and angry young punk living in a basement to multimillionaire father and activist makes for interesting material when coupled with his dramatic changes in musical style. Equal focus is given to all stages of his adult development--the chart-topping band the Police are presented as just another side trip, albeit an important one, in Sting's career. While there's a lot of minute detail, the presentation is uniformly impersonal: after reading this book, you'll know everything about the man from his favorite hobbies to when he had his nose done, but somehow there's little sense of true motives or guiding inspiration. Old Police fans who've wondered what happened to the bleached-blond, sneering singer since his "growing up" will be relieved to learn there's a bit less self-importance behind his image than we've been led to believe. Author Christopher Sandford includes opinions about individual songs and movie scenes throughout the book (feel free to disagree), and fans wanting complete lists of Sting's accomplishments will find the timeline at the end of the book most helpful. --Jill Lightner

    Book Description

This first full-length biography of the Newcastle schoolteacher who became Sting explores the substance behind the rock-star cliche‚ as it examines the creative disagreements - and physical violence - among The Police; the musical intelligence that consistently produced Grammy-winning albums; a much-publicized campaign to save the rain forest; two marriages and legendary sexual entanglements.

1 out of 5 stars VERY poorly written! There's a reason it costs less than a dollar used..........2006-11-20

I could barely finish the introduction without putting it down completely. There was no way I would read such verbose writing - the writer is in love with his own text, making the book almost unreadable. I decided to skim through the book reading a few bits here and there, but I don't think I'll get far (I just started it and felt so strongly I had to write this immediately).

1 out of 5 stars Complete waste time and money.......2004-02-07

I have not purchased this worthless piece of trash, but I have read it. First of all, it is unauthorized, which usually mean that certain sources will not be available to the auther, such as the person they are writing about! Secondly, the writing is dismal, and rather like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard. I gave it one star because there was no lower rating.

If you are a Sting fan, or curious, I would highly recommend "Broken Music," Sting's autobiography. It is beautifully written, and painfully honest.

    2 out of 5 stars Worth a read - but not a second.......2003-11-22

After reading this book, I feel that I have gained additional insight into Sting's life and, in that respect, don't consider the effort spent with this book a waste of my time. However, I feel that any additional time invested in reading it a second time WOULD be a waste.

Mr Sandford spends too much time editorializing on his thoughts and beliefs about the man and not enough telling the story. He has his own perceptions of Sting and, instead of those perceptions merely coloring his prose, they completely overshadow the story being told.

One factual error - Mr Sandford states that Sting was the culprit behind Henri Padovani's departure from The Police once Andy Summers had been tapped for guitarist duties. Message In A Box (even Sandford states that Sting had no part of this box set release) contains an essay written by Mr. Summers himself where he specifically states that HE, Andy, was the one that laid down the ultimatum that he was the guitarist-of-record for the Police and that Henri had to go. The Police played ONE gig as a quartet and Andy told Sting and Stewart that there would not be a second with Henri. Sting and his 'overwhelming self-important ego' were NOT the reason Henri left The Police.

That error alone makes me discount many other statements made by Mr. Sandford. Demolition Man is worth one (and ONLY one) read, but remember to bring a grain of salt with you when you do because, in this case, you definitely can't believe everything you read.

2 out of 5 stars Destined for 'la poubelle'.........2003-02-18

To give all those interested in Sting, a flavour of this book, and just how incredibly irritating it truly is to any self-confessed fan such as myself, I will attempt to entertain you with a mimic of the author's style of writing in this scathing review- only this time the spotlight being turned on Mr.Sandford - the self-styled 'le critique par excellence'.

"Its obvious from the very beginning, to the educated, of the 'rationale' this author proclaims to have on music, and quite obviously, it is nothing less than a mixture of his misplaced determination and ambition and our bad luck that Mr.Sandford ever thought to write a biography on Sting.

I do indeed compliment the author on his ability to critise and praise Sting on his life, however contrite and unjustified it often is. And its with sincere regret that after much careful 'investigation' - talking to 100 or so people (no less) about Sting* (*his music)- The 'facts' are as follows:

Having read some first-hand 'evidence' of Stings childhood , ie. "A Sting In The Tale" by James Berryman (a better book- highly recommended) "Chris" (Mr. Sandford) falls short of delivering any unbiased information, however well informed by the Tabliod sheets (see back pages for actual references) and therefore, in no uncertain terms, makes himself 'look' (and I say look as I'd never intend to bias my reader) like a self-congratulating hypocrite. Indeed if I read about it in a Tabloid- i'm sure it would be true.

Chris, my dear friend, you were once a journalist now you are little more than a 'pretentious git' in my eyes... at least Sting has the sense of humour to appreciate that some people will always see him that way for whatever reasons.

    You however - don't."

    ah, thank you kindly
well if you're still interested - just don't believe all the stuff he sprouts!

5 out of 5 stars The more you know the more you don't care.......2002-04-09

Mr. Sandford gives an insightful look into Mr. Sting. Unfortunately, the more you read, the more you discover that Mr. Sting is one of the most self indulgent, arrogant, childish people you would ever not want to know. A waste of a good write.

This book is very well written. There are alot of characters to keep track of, but Mr. Odom makes them so detailed and interesting that there's no way you'll forget any of them. This book is one of the most original stories I have ever read. The story moves smoothly, with plenty of action, interesting technology and settings. You won't be disappointed with this one!

This is a very difficult book to digest if you are not familiar with accounting concepts. This is not a beginner text! The text is written in a very broad context, however, the expectation in my class was to apply the broad concepts to detailed financial problems. This was difficult because Cleverly offerred few examples to help apply the difficult financial concepts. I found the text to be utterly frustrating!

4 out of 5 stars Troubling Guide to Alien Territory.......2001-08-23

This books offers a broad coverage of health care topics for a non-financial person. It is most deeply flawed for its inability to communicate clearly to a lay person. Essentially it is a vocabulary primer of important financial principles and concepts. It requires abstract thinking and the ability to follow mathematical models.

This reader studied Cleverly's text as a requirement for a healthcare finance class. The text was frustrating as this reader attempted to "know" everything about healthcare finances; however, this is probably not the intent of the book. It does present a road into the foreign land of finances. It demands respect for another set of data and another language for interpreting that data. One does not master this data set at one pass, however.

Nevertheless, this reader did gain some new financial information. At the risk of being simplistic, but communicative; a listing of some of the concepts learned follows:

              1. There are many users of financial information.

              2. Financial information can guide the formation of programs.

              3. Financial management is essential for successful healthcare organizations.

              4. Various qualities of health care organization types.

              5. How health care organizations make up for discouting and bad debt and capitated payments.

              6. General principles of accounting and why they are important. Also that these principles still need to be explained, to be consistent, and to be clarified.

              7. Overview of four main types of financial statements with a brief explanation of vaious line items.

              8. That financial planning includes considering inflation before it happens, and for equipment etc. to break and wear out before it breaks or wears out.

              9. That financial information can be better understood by comparing financial ratios of different line items and trends over time. There are national benchmarking ratios available and Cleverly gives some and tells how to get more.

              10. That financial planning should be an orderly process in an organization.

              11. There are different types of costs. Some stay the same, some are overhead types. Some are direct, some are hidden. Some can be controlled, some cannot.

              12. Figuring out prices is a very complex process in healthcare. It is based on costs and payers. It must also include indirect costs and costs of future problems.

              13. There is still stuff to learn . . . And this reader is still no expert.

Finally, after this MSN course and this text, this reader is more conversant with the financial landscape. It holds interest and it is understandable, after all.

2 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2000-01-08

I have finished about 5 different chapters for a Masters degree course I am taking. This book is not for beginners! I am an RN and have been working in business for 10 years. The author assumes that you have had basic accounting and the terminology is unfamiliar. There are very few examples given so it is hard to take the information and see how it is really used. I have had to buy another book just so that I could understand this book.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Cleverley is the guru of healthcare finance.......1999-08-27

This book represents the foundation on which all healthcare organizations should examine their financial strength and management. While not for beginners, it provides a comprehensive overview of reporting and benchmarks that prove invaluable during the budgeting process and for financial control.

              Book Description

Essentials of Economics is the market leader for the one-semester survey course. In just about 400 pages, it provides a solid introduction to the core concepts of economics with an emphasis on real-world examples and current events. Essentials has earned its popular success because, unlike other books on the market, it is free of the abstract and complex theory that require more time than this course allows. Instead, the text is clean and concise, with many examples of significance to students today, including Headlines and Policy Perspectives that use current events to help illustrate the topics discussed. This real-world policy emphasis is a distinctive feature of Schiller’s text and is integral to its dominance of the survey text market.

This textbook is an excellent book to review the essential concepts of economics. It will give you a solid foundation to do well in your graduate economics course.

I don't study Economics in college but i have loved this topic since high school. I was looking for a book that enriches my knowledge to Economics without much complexity. This book was exactly like i wanted. It has a very easy approach to many aspects of Economics so that the reader can be comfortable with both easy and advanced topics in microeconomics and macroeconomics.

              4 out of 5 stars Understandable.......2002-09-26

I am currently taking and Inro to Economics class. I read this book when ever I get the chance. I never really want to read books that have to do with my classed, but this book i don't mind reading. It's taking me a little while to get through it but I can pretty much understand everything that I am reading. The only thing I don't like about this book is that many of the definitions are worded in complicated ways. But if you read the book it explains in a different way that you can understand. This book also uses real like situations in order for you to understabd it too.

4 out of 5 stars Not just for college........2001-01-13

I recently took an Economics class and used this book for class. I found the book very easy to use along with the instructors notes. Key terms and definitions are provided alongside the text for easy referral later. The summary at the end of each chapter hits upon key points and helped with studying. The problems and exercises at the end of the chapters were helpful also, and the book provided the answers in the back, just in case.

5 out of 5 stars OK, who ordered the numbers?.......2007-01-11

Appreciative readers (they tend to be long-term readers as well) of the ECONOMIST sometimes wonder why misspellings and non sequiturs are virtually absent from that superb weekly magazine.

The answer?: an obsessive dedication to editorial rigor, nowhere better exemplified than in this 'style guide' for the numbers set. It doubles as a methodological guide, for it sets out near canonical equations and means for solving economic problems.

              Nine chapters cover:

              Key concepts
              Finance and investment
Descriptive measures for interpretation and analysis
              Tables and charts
              Forecasting techniques
              Sampling and hypothesis testing
              Incorporating judgments into decisions
              Decision-making in action
              Linear programming and networking

This guide should be required reading for everyone who manages from a numbers-intensive platform.

4 out of 5 stars From Great to Good.......2004-03-18

I have read cover-to-cover a previous edition of this book (when it was published by Wiley in 1998) and recently had an opportunity to carefully peruse this current edition (5th ed. by Bloomberg Press???). What I found is that this is a strange case of how a great book (the 1998 edition) turned into merely a good book (this 5th edition). Because of this regression toward the average, I deducted one star from my review (but still feel that it is good enough for 4 stars).

As you may have noticed, I really loved the older edition of The Economist Numbers Guide that I thankfully own. It is a great overview and introduction of mathematics as it relates to business. There are a lot of great things about that edition of this book. One of the things I admired about it was the range of topics covered, from interest rates and basic probability/statistics all the way up to Markov Chains, linear programming, and marginal analysis. It is hard to find the breadth of topics covered in that book elsewhere - whether all in one book or in any combination of books.

So I found it perplexing that this 5th edition dedacted some materials and topics covered in older editions. Gone are the interesting discussion of descriptive statistics for sets of data that do not easily conform to any of the standard probability distributions (e.g., where median is the best measure of the 'average' and substitutes must be used for the more common parameters such as standard deviation). I have a hard time finding anything coherent much less accessible on those topics elsewhere so it is a shame that they were left off of the 5th edition.

The only new material (not previously present) is a short blurb on public-key cryptography. While that topic is interesting to me and the limited discussion was illuminating and mathematically sound, it seemed a rather quixotic choice to put in when some interesting materials in previous editions were left off and new material that would have been more useful to the targeted audience have yet to be added.

What I mean by useful material that have yet to be added is that both the 1998 edition and this edition don't have some materials that I would think naturally ought to be added. E.g., the section on finance & investment mathematics is mostly devoted to various discussions on interest rate/time value of money & basic probability. I think adding material on CAPM (although CAPM Beta is defined in the book's very helpful glossary section), option/derivative pricing, financial portfolio optimization, and other topics in financial mathematics/engineering would make a great and natural addition to this book.

Some problems common to both the prior and current edition of this book are the occassional (relatively rare) typos. They are usually minor (although they are most annoyingly frequent in the section on time value of money / interest rates).

Another flaw in both the older and newer editions is that there are gaps in the expository material that don't make much sense. To be fair, this book is designed to be a brief intro/overview into a wide swathe of topics so it wouldn't be reasonable to expect that the author go into great detail on every topic. However, there are instances - e.g., the example on mixed strategies in game theory - where one or two additional sentences would help novices to understand (e.g., how did you get the the mixed strategy probabilities? author should have added a couple of more lines about how the system of equations are interrelated with one another when determining mixed strategies).

Having said all of that, let me reiterate that BOTH the old and the new edition of The Economist Numbers Guide is a wonderful resource for people interested in business mathematics. The sections on decision-making and forecasting are especially of value since they are so wonderfully explained here and a comparable set of explanations are hard to find elsewhere.

In future editions, I just hope that the author heeds my advice about bringing back some topics in older editions, correcting a few errors & lapses, and adding some material that would fit in with what has otherwise been an excellent series of books.

For a novice in economics, not an easy field to be a novice in, this was a helpful book. It got me started, by which I mean I wasn't completely lost when I read it.
