This is a catalog.......2007-04-19
This book is a collection of Tiki art from a sunny tropical art exhibit to smashingly hit foggy San Francisco. An amazing turn out was observed that night, where the crowds were spilling into the streets, and there was a line of people waiting for people to exit before they could be let in. There is a variety of levels of art in this book, where all aspire to share their love for the Tiki God. There are no Johnny come latelys to join the love of tropical drinks, tropical breezes and a Tiki God to admire. This is a good book to complete your collection of Tiki books.
Great book!.......2004-12-17
Otto is no johnny-come-lately trying to profit off the Tiki craze--he sparked the Tiki revival 10 years ago, when he started "Tiki News." Many of us first learned that others were also into Tiki from that publication, which also introduced us to the Tiki work of Shag and others.
This is a great survey of newer Tiki art and is highly recommended.
A little better than a magazine.......2004-12-08
This is a small book. I expected more and have to say I was very dissapointed. While there is some good art from some good artists in this book, there is alot of amateur tiki art that is not worthy and you have to wonder why it is even in the book. What is the criteria for the tiki art in this book? There seems to be none, and frankly this book seems like a weak attempt to profit off the latest tiki craze. I do not recommend it to anyone. Compared to the other tiki books in my collection, this book leaves you very flat.

This is a must-have for Tiki-philes, contemporary art and art-book collectors, students of art history and those throwing the infamous Martha Stewart Tiki Luau. For this exhibit, I chose a handful of artists whose work I not only enjoy but highly respect as excellent examples of the movement. Some of the artists are well known, integral figures within the Tiki movement (Bosko, Crazy Al, Tiki, Ony, etc.), while some of them may not necessarily be associated with Tiki art but have been uniquely inspired to create beautiful Polynesian Pop pieces (Isabel Samaras, Ewik, Niagara, etc).

Tiki Art Two worth a view.......2007-06-08
This 112 page 8x10" book is a nice collection of a wide range of modern-day tiki-influenced art. Roughly 16 artists splay out a nice array of styles and moods. What I like about the tiki art form is that it lends itself very much to being playful, or dark, or both at times, which is wonderful, and this collection captures that range.
Not owning the first volume of this kind, I noticed that curator Otto mentions that he has more work by fewer artists in this one, which is intriguing, because you'll find that there are only 2-3 pieces per artist in this volume.. I'm wondering if the previous had twice the artists with one piece apiece! All the same, being a devoted, manic tiki fan, I can find absolutely no fault in this collection, except one person's work was a bit.. flat & unimaginative, and another's pointed towards psychedelic graffiti-style, but all the rest were absolutely captivating, so how could one complain?!?
And in what I wouldn't even call a complaint, I'll say that I wish it had 200 more pages! 79 pages of art, 33 of words and wallpaper.. I would pay commensurately for another hundred or so of examples!
So, overall, worth every penny. I wish local booksellers would have the other volumes, so I could peruse, but I will probably take the risk and dive into the others, based on the quality of this book. I'm sure now that curator von Stroheim & crew have sufficient taste to deliver many more successes. Thanks be for this collection; would strongly recommend to the Tiki-enchanted out there!
Tiki Art Two a success!.......2006-01-08
For those of you who enjoyed "Tiki Art Now!", this redux book by Otto Von Stroheim is an impressive, if not better performance of art, than his first book. "Tiki Art Two" is different from "Tiki Art Now" in that it is set up in chapters of various artists, showing multiple pages of works by each one.
The foreward by Jeffrey Vallance gives a background to the Polynesian Pop culture and to where its roots can be traced. Following, the introduction by Otto Von Stroheim helps explain the origins of the Tiki Art genre and how it is a fixed art form of American Folklore.
The artwork itself is as spectacular as it was in the first book, and yet in my opinion, seems to be more targeted at the "tiki bar" style of art that most of us, who are not experts in the tiki art form, know and love of the Tiki Style.

Erich von Stroheim (1885-1957) was one of the true giants in American film history. Stubborn, arrogant, and colorful, he saw himself as a cinema artist, which led to numerous conflicts with producers and studio executives who complained about the inflated budgets and extraordinary length of his films. Stroheim achieved great notoriety and success, but he was so uncompromising that he turned his triumph into failure. He was banned from ever directing again and spent the remainder of his life as an actor.
For years Stroheim's life has been wreathed in myths, many of his own devising. Arthur Lennig scoured European and American archives for details concerning the life of the actor and director, and he counters several long-accepted and oft-repeated claims. Stroheim's tales of military experience are almost completely fictitious; the “von” in his name was an affectation adopted at Ellis Island in 1909; and, counter to his own claim, he did not participate in the production of [The] Birth of a Nation in 1914.
Wherever Stroheim lived, he was an outsider: a Jew in Vienna, an Austrian in southern California, an American in France. This contributed to an almost pathological need to embellish and obscure his past; yet, it also may have been the key to his genius both behind and in front of the camera. He had a fantastic dedication to absolute cinematic truth and believed that his vision and genius would triumph over the Hollywood system.
As an actor, Stroheim threw himself into his portrayals of evil men, relishing his epithet “The Man You Love to Hate.” As a director, he immersed himself in every facet of production, including script writing and costume design. In 1923 he created his masterpiece Greed, infamous for its eight-hour running time. The studio cut the film to two hours and burned the extra footage. Stroheim returned to acting, saving some of his finest performances for La Grande Illusion (1937) and Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard (1950), a role he hated, probably because it was too similar to the story of his own life.

Big Disappointment !.......2000-09-12
I was eagerly anticipating reading Lennig's bio of von Stroheim. After the first chapter my joy turned sour. Very little is revealed that was'nt already discussed in Richard Kosyarski's The Man You Love To Hate, and Weinberg's Stroheim: A Pictorial Review Of His nine Films. Both of these books are out of print but I beseech you to try to find at your local library or through Amazon's out-of-print service. Lennig prose is rather dry, the subject rarely comes to life, and when he does offer insights Stroheim the man seems sad forever the outsider, a two bit Viennese hustler with visions too great for his talent as a director. I was entranced by Stroheim when I was barely in my teens more than twenty years ago. I know about his losing battles against the studio heads, his public freaks and failures. It is the real man behind films like the breathtaking Greed, the unfinished Queen Kelly and the oftimes painfully erotic Foolish Wives that I wanted brought to life. Perhaps I'm only wishing that he could be brought back to life.

What can I add to all the glowing reviews of this book except for my own enthusiasm for it! Arthur Lennig has done a spendid job recounting the life and work of Erich von Stroheim, presenting him as the man and genius he was while also debunking a lot of the myths. Not only is it THE definitive Stroheim biography, it's also highly entertaining reading! A must-read for all film lovers.

Fascinating tale of a frustrated, perfectionist director.......2002-01-31
Erich Von Stroheim was surely the most unique director of the silent era. Of all of his films, only THE MERRY WIDOW survives in a form that is close to what he wanted. Yet this film is the least representative of his films. He was probably fired from more movies that anybody else in Hollywood. Yet producers recognized that he was an artistic genius and they kept him employed for over a decade. Von Stroheim gave his critics plenty of rope to hang himself, as he worked his crews incredibly long hours and he busted the budget of almost every movie that he filmed. Still, it is sad that Fox producer Sol Wurtzel killed any chances Von Stroheim had in sound films by re-shooting most of his last film, WALKING DOWN BROADWAY.
Almost every film Von Stroheim made is now considered a classic, such as BLIND HUSBANDS and GREED. In the sound era, he had many of memorable supporting roles as an actor in films like THE GREAT GABBO, THE GRAND ILLUSION, SUNSET BOULEVARD, and FIVE GRAVES TO CAIRO.
I alreay have the earlier incarnation of this book THE MAN YOU LOVED TO HATE. I was glad that I bought this updated version, because there is a lot of new information in it. If you are interested in silent film history, you will love this biography.

This is an attempt to reconstruct the complete film of Greed by Erich von Stroheim. For fans such as myself, it is indispensable. Expensive but well worth it for the very rare photos which will give you some hint of what the rest of the film looked like.

This is a great book and easy to read. Instead of psychology and theory, she gives a lot of examples. This not only makes it easier to read but illustrates that everyone will experience a different type of retirement.

I am so glad I found this book. I have been struggling with retirement for the past four years and read many books. I liked the book so much I reread it.
This book really provided concrete information that has been helpful. The different paths described were useful in helping me realize that I didn't need to go out and start a Fortune 500 company or reinvent the Internet to be successful in retirement. There are many gems of wisdom throughout this book which I remind myself of when I feel frustrated. I have now had the best month of my retirement in the past four years. Thanks Dr. Schlossberg. Please write more!
