Reality Transformed: Film and Meaning and Technique
ASIN: 0262693283 |
Book Description
Although Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, and Jean Renoir do not pontificate about "eternal verities or analytical niceties," as Irving Singer remarks in Three Philosophical Filmmakers, each expresses, through his work, his particular vision of reality. In this study of these great directors, Singer examines the ways in which meaning and technique interact within their different visions.
Singer's account reveals Hitchcock, Welles, and Renoir to be not only consummate artists and inspired craftsmen but also sophisticated theorists of film and its place in human experience. They left behind numerous essays, articles, and interviews in which they discuss the nature of their own work as well as more extensive issues. Singer draws on their writings, as well as their movies, to show the pervasive importance of what they did as dedicated filmmakers.
Hitchcock used his mastery of contrived devices not as mere formalism divorced from content, Singer notes, but in order to evoke emotional responses that are meaningful in themselves and that matter greatly to millions of people. Singer's discussion of Hitchcock's work analyzes, among other things, his ideas about suspense, romance, and the comic. Singer also makes a detailed comparison of the original Psycho with Gus Van Sant's recent remake. Considering the work of Welles, Singer shows how and why the theme of vanished origins -- "the myth of the past" -- recurs in many of his films, starting with the Rosebud motif in Citizen Kane and continuing much later in his little-known masterpiece The Immortal Story. Expanding upon Renoir's comment that his own films were "always the same film," Singer studies his entire work as a coherent though evolving search for contact and "conversation" with the audience. While recognizing the primacy of technique, Renoir used cinematic artifice in the service of that humanistic aspiration.

Filmbuff's pleasure.......2006-03-05
Do not be worried by the title if you are unphilosophical. The book is a lucid and enjoyable discussion of the different styles and attitudes towards film-making of three fine directors. Worth the attention of filmbuffs.

Book Description
In Strong on Music Vera Brodsky Lawrence uses the diaries of lawyer and music lover George Templeton Strong as a jumping-off point from which to explore every aspect of New York City's musical life in the mid-nineteenth century. This third and final volume ranges across opera, orchestral and chamber music, blackface minstrels, military bands, church choirs, and even concert saloons.
Among the many striking scenes vividly portrayed in Repercussions are the rapturous reception of Verdi's Ballo in maschera in 1861; the impact of the Civil War on New York's music scene, from theaters closing as their musicians enlisted to the performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at every possible occasion; and open-air concerts in the developing Central Park. Throughout, Lawrence mines a treasure trove of primary source materials including daily newspapers, memoirs, city directories, and architectural drawings.
Indispensable for scholars, Repercussions will also fascinate music fans with its witty writing and detailed descriptions of the cultural life of America's first metropolis.
Formerly a concert pianist, Vera Brodsky Lawrence spent the last third of her life as a historian of American music (she died in 1996). She was editor of The Piano Works of Louis Moreau Gottschalk and The Complete Works of Scott Joplin.
On Volume 1: "A marvelous book. There is nothing like it in the literature of American music."—Harold C. Schonberg, New York Times Book Review
On Volume 2: "A monumental achievement."—Victor Fell Yellin, Opera Quarterly

Customer Reviews:
A Comprehensive Infrastructure for the Comprehensive/Competent Investor.......2007-08-12
I picked up this book again after having read it about a year ago. I highly recommend that any beginning investor read this book--more than once and at different times as his/her own investing experience and confidence increases.
There are many things to recommend about the book, but I'll focus on the the most key. First, the book is written in a conversational style that engages the reader. Second, the book discusses all of the major areas in which all investors need to develop skill--it provides the bones of competent and comprehensive investor education. Third, the book layers those bones with enough meat to give the beginning investor a foundational understanding from how the market physically works through technical analysis. Fourth, all of the material is reinforced through the summary "Roadmap of Success". I highly recommend this book. I also recommend George Dagnino's Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets for investors who want to ensure that their investment decisions are in tune with the natural economic cycle.
The stock market course.......2007-06-27
Excellent course material. The course advises when to get into market, when to exit. I am very satisfied.
Written by committee?.......2006-07-23
Great idea for a book, but poor execution. The idea is to introduce novices to the stock market and teach them all the fundamentals. But this book is so poorly organized and biased that novices will be only confused, and more knowledgeable investors disappointed. The authors are the sponsors of a web service for options traders, and they never fail to recommend their service. The book is biased toward options trading, technical analysis, momentum trading, and chart analysis: not strategies for beginners.
The organization is extremely confusing, seemingly random, and with lots of repetition. For example, the chapter on option trading comes before the chapters on market analysis. At the end of each chapter there is a summary of the main points of the chapter; great idea, but the only problem is that the chapter summaries do not accurately reflect the chapter contents. For example, the chapter summary for "fundamental analysis" lists the PEG ratio as a key point of the chapter, but the chapter doesn't even mention the PEG ratio! PEG ratio isn't mentioned until a later chapter on "analyzing company reports." In that chapter(p. 237-8), the authors suggest that a P/E ratio of 143(!) is quite acceptable for a growth stock (EMC corp) and that a stock with such a P/E would make a good investment!! EMC Corp. fell from $101 in 2000 to $4 in 2002. It's trading now around $10, with a P/E of 21 (July 2006). On a similar note, Enron is described as a "green" or environmentally friendly stock.
Even worse, the book presents no coherent program for investing in stocks, just a bunch of random, often contradictory advice. It turns out that all the indicators for avoiding a stock are also good indicators for buying the stock if you are a "contrarian" investor. Hardly a coherent trading program for novices.
nice introduction.......2006-07-14
This book is a great insight to the stock market at an entry level. I have read it twice and completed the workbook and I am getting better at playing broker everyday. It also has excellant websights to check out.
Great introductory education tool!.......2006-07-11
If you are new to the stock market, this is the book for you. George and Tom provide an excellent overview of how the market works in easy to understand language. Each aspect of the market is laid out in a way that you can grasp the many key concepts that make the market work. This book is a foundational resource for any new investor. In order to make sound investment decisions, one needs to understand the "Big Picture!"

Better Together.......2005-11-23
Like Amazon says - this book is better together with The Stock Market Course (main book.)It provides real case studies and helps test the knowledge you WILL learn if you read the other book - you can't skip an entire semester and show up for the final expecting to know the answers. Take mine and Amazon's recommendation and get both of the books together!
Terrible Book.......2004-10-31
It is a waste of money, practically useless. Wasted my money, may it not waste yours.
Goes with the Stock Market Course Book.......2001-07-13
This workbook should only be purchased if you buy the main book. It is designed to test your knowledge after reading the Stock Market Course book.
Great idea. Helped me refine my knowledge.
Book Description
This work was originally published in 1934 as a yearlong course in analysis and was a confidential document available only to subscribers and clients of the Wetsel Market Bureau. The Jerry Favors Analysis recently gave the contents of the course a top-5 status. The 26 chapters contain a series of lessons; each dedicated to a single aspect of chart analysis - some unknown today, others still employed in their original or variant forms.
Customer Reviews:
angles and curves .......2006-10-26
The angles and curves of stregth and weakness is worth the price of the course 5 times over. Has allot of ideas that were lost to time but are very reliable even in todays market.
A Methodology for Trading.......2000-03-18
"A Course in Trading" provides a rationale for selecting buy/sell prices and understanding the marketplace. I very much enjoy the concise technical presentation of the complex yet understandable lessons. I have successfully applied the lessons learned to my personal trading activities.
Buy and Hold may not be the best invesment model for the "New Business" paradigm. As history has shown, most of the "original" automobile manufacturers and airlines are now out of business. Accordingly, many of the "New Business" companies will too become extinct. Unless you invest in Mutual Funds, or have some other form of money management, you must participate actively in the market. "A Course in Trading" will provide a rationale for your trading decisions.

Book Description
This classic is the foundation on which technical analysis is built.
Customer Reviews:
Epic for its time.......2003-07-18
The ironic thing is, you couldn't tell it was written in 1932 or 2002 .. the techniques are identical to basic TA today , even the psychology section about cutting losses and trading with the trend sound familiar. Certainly revolutionary when it came out, it's somewhat dated now and a bit wordy. Anyone familiar with chart patterns - h&s, wedges, flags, triangles, trendlines will likely find nothing new in this book. Also, the explanations are a bit wordy .. though I suspect this was necessary when no one was familiar with it. I give it 3 stars for content and another for the fact that it was written in 1932. However, an advanced trader will find this book useless other than for sentimental curiosity.
Learn from the guy who taught Edwards and Magee.......2003-07-17
Finally available to the rest of the world, this classic is easily the best book on classical technical analysis available. Although it is more than 70 years old, the complete and descriptive discussions of how and why reversal and continuation patterns work are as valid now as they were then. Without Schabacker, there'd be no Edwards and Magee, Elliott, Murphy, or even Poser.
Chart reading, anyone?.......2001-12-12
So you want to learn on how to read charts... This is the one for you then! A little dense sometimes due to it's completeness on patterns, but it's all there, really. Won't teach you on how to make a trading system, but if you're into discretionery trading systems you'll love this one. I haven't found a reversal pattern that's not on these pages, and if you want to know about continuation patterns, they're all almost there too. I recommend this book for beginners as for experienced traders.
This is one of those books I keep next to my trading desk!
Technical Analysis' Pioneering Vision.......2001-11-09
Richard Schabacker, in this pioneering book, presents the art and science of technical analysis as an organized subject.
In 13 chapters, he discusses important reversal formations, minor reversal formations, major continuation formations, intermediate patterns and phenomena, trend line action, support and resistance levels, measuring rules and formations and trading tactics.
First published in 1932, the book gives equal weight to a formation's potential and its flaws and warts. Originally devised as a practical investment course, it still sparkles with application today. Despite today's modern computer methods of interpreting price and buying trends, an investor or trader must still master the basics and there is no finer place to begin than this former Forbes financial editor's ground-breaking work.
Gotta Start Somewhere.......2000-08-09
Very good and thorough. If you've had no technical analysis experience, this won't go over your head, and it won't bore you to death if you're somewhat familiar. Somewhat out of date in that it was written in the 30's, but the charts and formations it highlights are eerily valid, relevant, and applicable today as it was back then so you KNOW it's been time tested. Stocks don't chart any differently today than they did back then. Advanced technicians wouldn't like it...doesn't go into the "data" side of technical analysis as in ADX, MACD, RSI,...etc. But about a good a starting point as you're going to find. A great foundation builder.
