Book Description
This is the first book devoted exclusively to a little known phenomenon: the ubiquitous presence of sound in early cinema. "Silent cinema" may rarely have been silent, but the sheer diversity of sounds characterizing the first twenty years of moving pictures still can astonish us, from barkers and ballyhoos to pianists and orchestras. These twenty-five essays cover a broad range of subjects, including sound practices in production, sound-related exhibition practices film music, and the politics of sound reception.
Customer Reviews:
Early Cinema literature.......2005-10-14
As anticipated, I found the book to have sections pertinent to the use of magic lanterns in theatres. I gave a talk to my retirement club on Music in Silent Films, and was able to use some references from the book. Well researched and full of detail. Also quite readable.
Book Description
American Movie Audiences examines the place of Hollywood cinema in the everyday life of its spectators from its beginnings to the arrival of sound. Previously, little has been known of early audiences and their response to the films of the day and this book brings together an array of fresh research on some of the key issues. These include the social composition of audiences, questions of ethnicity and class in the Nickelodeon era and how attempts at regulating cinema were justified by the particular and (not always accurate) constructions of cinema audiences by middle class reformers. Other contributors consider the extent to which audiences and other conditions of reception became standardised and the ways in which audiences and exhibitors participated in - or resisted - the process of homogenisation that
accompanied the rise of Hollywood.

Book Description
"We have in this book a Rosetta stone for mediating, or translating, African musical behavior and aesthetics."—Andrew Tracey, African Music
"John Miller Chernoff, who spent 10 years studying African drumming, has a flair for descriptive writing, and his first-person narratives should be easily understood by any reader, while ringing unmistakably true for the reader who has also been to West Africa."—Roderick Knight, Washington Post Book World
"Ethnomusicologists must be proud that their discipline has produced a book that will, beyond doubt, rank as a classic of African studies."—Peter Fryer, Research in Literatures
"A marvelous book. . . . Not many scholars will ever be able to achieve the kind of synthesis of 'doing' and 'writing about' their subject matter that Chernoff has achieved, but he has given us an excellent illustration of what is possible."—Chet Creider, Culture
"Chernoff develops a brilliant and penetrating musicological essay that is, at the same time, an intensely personal and even touching account of musical and cultural discovery that anyone with an interest in Africa can and should read. . . . No other writing comes close to approaching Chernoff's ability to convey a feeling of how African music 'works'"—James Koetting, Africana Journal
"Four stars. One of the few books I know of that talks of the political, social, and spiritual meanings of music. I was moved. It was so nice I read it twice."—David Byrne of "Talking Heads"
The companion cassette tape has 44 examples of the music discussed in the book. It consists of field recordings illustrating cross-rhythms, multiple meters, call and response forms, etc.
Customer Reviews:
the classic.......2000-11-30
this is THE classic on african music. you will find it listed in the bibliographies of almost any serious study that came later. it is in-depth and comprehensive. if you want to get just one: this is it.
The heart beats ..........2000-07-15
This book's sweetness, modesty, humor and graceful scholarship honors one of the world's greatest achievements. It's about drumming, and life.
One of the Classics.......1999-04-15
This is a remarkable work that fits African music into its cultural context and is consistently provocative and enlightening. It's a world music classic, along with such studies as "The Latin Tinge," "The Brazilian Sound" and "Catch a Fire."
A masterpiece in analytical cultural exploration.......1999-03-24
What begins as a primer in African polyrhythm becomes a spiritual quest to understand culture and humanity. Don't skip the endnotes in this impassioned examination of musical tonality and rhythm. Forging a tentative balance between scholarship and interpretation, Chernoff's book addresses the subconscious dynamics of culture, and unwittingly explains "race" more convincingly than the agitprop self-promoters whose explicit goal is to deconstruct the historical consciences of Africans and Europeans.
Customer Reviews:
Hard hands, but enjoyable.......2006-03-25
I like the authors style (over the shoulder). He will ask you questions from time to time, and try and trip you up. These are pretty tough hands and you wont appreciate the players skill unless you are at least a good player.
Thrills, not lessons........2006-02-05
The 46 hands in this book are a selection from 393 "Hand of the Week" bridge column articles for advanced players on the Bridge Base Online web site. This book is not intended for novice or intermediate players. And if you are an advanced player, you probably do not need a book that claims to provide "Lessons". The hands seem to have been selected for their novelty. Many illustrate extraordinary thoughtful tactics of the defense, only to succumb to inspired declarer play. It is a helter skelter variety pack of interesting hands with careful analysis. Some hands are from regular players at Bridge Base. Some are from world championship events. And some are from the author's sessions with Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, members of The American Upper Class and probably the reason for the pretentious title.
One annoyance is the author does not follow generally accepted style guidelines for presentation of bridge hands. The bid columns are often not labeled "North, East, South, West", but use players names like "Warren, Bill, Sharon, Fred" and the reader has to annotate the columns to understand the bidding. If you buy this book because it has the word "Lessons" in the title, you probably will be a little disappointed. It has no explicit description of what lesson comes from each hand. Most of the hands involve highly customized bid systems, and little attempt is made to explain the bidding. The hands are entertaining, not instructive. It's a thrill book, not a lesson book. For example, there's a hand where a top Canadian player opens an 8 HCP hand (QJ8743, A96, K, JT5) and partner makes 3NT with a 12 HCP hand. The author offers no clue why the hand merits an open. What lesson is there for the reader? Your own play is not likely to improve if you attempt to follow such examples. There are many other books to consider if you want to study excellent analysis of hand play. For example, there's Play These Hands with Me by Terence Reese, Play Bridge with Mike Lawrence, and Bridge With the Blue Team by Pietro Forquet. Those books are far more likely to have a positive effect on your play.

Book is a photocopy.......2007-09-27
I was quite disappointed, with the publisher not amazon, because the entire book is a photocopy. I wanted to keep this book in my library and something of this sort is just not acceptable. I even went to barnes and nobles to see if they had a good version of this book, but they sell a this photocopy for around $59. Sad isn't it!
No issue with amazon. Never have had. Timely arrival, no damage etc. I am glad I paid a discounted price for this on amazon because paying around $60 for a photocopy is definitley not worth it.
Very good .......2007-08-24
Anyone interested in learning more about how to think about developing software systems in a large corporate environment needs to read this book. Short and to the point it outlines how to think about and develop an architecture for the enterprise.
waste mt time and money.......2007-05-13
I feel regret to spend the money and time on this book
A reasonable architecture development framework in a poor-quality package.......2006-02-28
My first impression of this book was poor due to its aesthetic problems: although it's a hardcover, it appears to have been "printed" on poor quality paper by a photocopier low on toner. Certain diagrams are rendered unreadable by the lack of color, and gray backgrounds are uneven and splotchy.
Aesthetics aside, the content of this book does deliver on its promises. It presents a reasonable architecture development framework. Each aspect of the framework is explained and justified with examples from the author's personal experience. It covers the people management roles of an architect too, and includes some useful advice on how to "sell" architecture changes throughout an organization, and how and when to involve the client's IT staff.
The book details a step-by-step approach, best read start-to-finish. I imagine most architects who read this already have their own frameworks, and won't want to swallow Carbone's methodology whole. But nearly anyone will find bits and pieces useful.
What this book doesn't include is much technical detail. There is no discussion of architecture or integration design patterns, and little advice for conducting vendor evaluations for architectural components. But if the framework / methodology angle is what you're seeking, this book delivers.
Excellent how-to book.......2005-10-24
This book is rather thin, but very dense. I can't remember reading a book that had so many bullet points and lists. While many books on the subject of Enterprise Architecture focus primarily on discussions, this book omits wordy definitions and usual fluff and "cuts to the chase" on how to analyze company's baseline, synthesize its target state using business drivers, and deliver a roadmap for transitioning to it.
Unlike with many books listed on Amazon.com, it's not currently possible to search inside this book or view its Table of Contents. Therefore, I have decided to list some of the chapter titles below:
Connecting Architecture to the Business
Analyzing the Business Current State
Constructing the Business target State
Analyzing the Target State--Identifying Gaps and Opportunities
Architecture Models
Standards
Establishing Metrics
Presenting the Plan for Buy-in
Compliance and Other Key Processes
The entire book is a template on how to approach an overwhelming task of restructuring a company into a better entity that will enable it to achieve its business goals. Thus I would recommend it to someone who is fairly familiar with the theoretical underpinnings of the subject and is ready to try it in practice. I am sure it will be as helpful to you as it has been helpful to me.

State-of-the-art SIP primer
SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is the open standard that will make IP telephony an irresistible force in communications, doing for converged services what http does for the Web. SIP Demystified – authored by Gonzalo Camarillo, one of the contributors to SIP development in the IETF—gives you the tools to keep your company and career competitive. This guide tells you why the standard is needed, what architectures it supports, and how it interacts with other protocols. As a bonus, you even get a context-setting background in data networking. Perfect if you’re moving from switched voice into a data networking environment, here’s everything you need to understand:
* Where, why, and how SIP is used
* What SIP can do and deliver
* SIP’s fit with other standards and systems
* How to plan implementations of SIP-enabled services
* How to size up and choose from available SIP products
Customer Reviews:
Well written for absolute beginners.......2007-04-06
This is a great book for absolute beginners. If you have already read the SIP RFC(s) then this book is clearly not for you, on the other hand if you are an engineer beginning to learn SIP then this could provide a great introduction.
The first few chapters are not about SIP but about telecom, VoIP in general and IETF process. I found that quite useful too.
After having read this book you will be able to understand RFC 3261 much better. This is a fast read, I finished this book in a day when I read it several years ago. This could also be a whirlwind refresher for someone who had once worked on SIP but now wants to brush up for a sales meeting tommorow.
Sip for Dummies.......2006-07-09
This is one of the worst books yet. There are spelling errors and grammer errors throughout the book. Nowhere in this book does the author talk about ENUM, DDDS or NAPTR. Nor does he talk about DHCP (option 120) nor DNS. The examples are poor, not enough detail and it falls along the line of "Once Upon A Time." No offence to the Brothers Grimm.
Helpful.......2004-10-19
I thought this book was very helpful to understand the basic concepts of SIP.
paper wasted sip book.......2004-06-29
Author is really good but the way SIP described in the book is a kind of child-story , details on important parts of SIP and on unified services are skipped instead make-up parts are highlighted.
Skip the first half.......2002-07-14
I found this book covered too many points on the spectrum. The first half goes over everything BUT SIP. Most people who want to learn the generic SIP structure already know how a simple telephone and data network operates.
This takes a little too long to get the the "meat" but from there on gives a pretty good detail of the SIP format for anyone looking at understanding the basic SIP code format.
As a fundamentals book for anyone wanting to start learning SIP programming it would be a good reference to have on the shelf. Skip the first half though.

Finally, a book for hardware diagnostics-and-utilities junkies. If you've ever wished you had a utility for performing a burn-in on a new system, swapping one IRQ assignment for another, testing an on-board speaker, verifying the performance of a parallel port, or any of a hundred other hardware-related tasks, get this book. Its accompanying CD-ROM comes packed with scores of programs (mostly shareware) that do these tasks and many others.
On the CD-ROM, don't look for a lot of SCSI optimization utilities or Fibre Channel diagnostics. Bigelow focuses his effort on programs that make simple, common tasks easier. A word of caution: Some of the utilities here also make it really easy to render your computer inoperable, so be careful! The text mainly takes the form of documentation for the utilities and diagnostics on the CD, including charts of command-line switches.
One might argue that in the age of Plug-and-Play, when operating systems are supposed to identify and resolve hardware conflicts and inefficiencies, command-line problem-solvers such as the ones included with this book would be obsolete. Not so. Windows NT still doesn't support Plug-and-Play, and Windows 95 doesn't always get things right. Those facts, along with the fact that most computer professionals have to support old machines, guarantee that this book will be relevant for some time.
Book Description
When malfunctions occur in any PC or peripheral, technicians will reach for this unique book/CD-ROM remedy kit. The computer equivalent of a doctor's black bag, it contains the largest and broadest collection of utilities and diagnostic tools to be found anywhere. And no wonder-it's by America's premier author of computer troubleshooting repair guides. Repair pros and serious amateurs have been clamoring for a one-stop, ready-to-use reference like this one: a CD-ROM storehouse of 150 freeware utilities and diagnostics, accompanied by a book that describes "symptoms" and illustrates the real-world use of each diagnostic remedy. The package covers general PC hardware (including motherboards, chipsets, keyboards, and mice) as well as video boards, monitors, printers, modems, and drives. As a bonus, it provides an arsenal of anti-virus tools.

Book Description
Grid computing is widely regarded as a technology of immense potential in both industry and academia. Yet many enterprises are still hesitant about the implementation of an enterprise-level grid system, due to the lack of consistent and widely used standards. Security is probably the most important concern and needs both close understanding and careful implementation as grid computing offers unique security challenges.
Based on his research and industry experience, Chakrabarti has structured the issues pertaining to grid computing security into three main categories: architecture-related, infrastructure-related, and management-related issues. He discusses all three categories in detail, presents existing solutions, standards, and products, and pinpoints their shortcomings and open questions.
Together with a brief introduction into grid computing in general and underlying security technologies, this book offers the first concise and detailed introduction to this important area, targeting professionals in the grid industry as well as students specializing in grid computing, networking, peer-to-peer systems, or operating systems. It can also be used as the basis for a self-contained course on grid computing security, complementing the author’s tutorials at grid conferences.
