This book was put together really well.......2007-06-05
I picked this book up at the local library and I must get my own copy. Tons of pictures and movie posters and sufficient commentary information, including background information. A lot of research was expended to obtain many interesting inside tidbits and on the film-making process. Best of all, there are many sexy pictures of the actresses of these films. In fact, I believe there are more pictures of the women than the men. That's a plus for me.
The author makes no attempt to trash any of the films. For example, for the film She-Devils on Wheels, the author writes, "among those who love low-budget and exploitation films ...". I am old enough to have seen the films of the 60's-70's-80's, low budget films that are barely made anymore. Thanks to Blockbuster (or Lackluster) that stopped stocking these films to concentrate on just the hits. And high ticket prices hurt as well. But, what you saw on the screen was more real than the special effects laden, blue screen, whimpy men & women, boring stuff we now get geared for the 13 year old. I was never a big fan of biker flicks, but now we have 40 cult films because nothing has come on line in the past 30 years to make these films obsolete. Afterall, what studio is going to put a $5 million actor on a motorcycle?
Back to the book, the 40 films are listed by release date. An alphabetical cross-reference of film titles is missing, my only nitpick.

Without going into a lot of detail...this is THE guitar chord book. Loaded with chords, explanations, fretting pictures, styles.

Great book for visual learning types. Good tips for chord usage too........2006-07-29
I picked this book after looking through several at the bookstore. What I liked about it was that it had lots of chords and it gave you some of the "logic" behind the chord and why/where you might use them. Most other books just have lots of chord pictures laid out on the page which I did not find helpful.
Also this book shows an actual photo of a hand playing the chord which I liked. The book's tablature (chord pictures) shows which note is the root in the chord which I also liked.
Another cool thing is that the book is spiral bound so that it will lay open flat. This is really helpful when you're actually playing your guitar chords and not holding the book.
So while this book doesn't have 1000's of chords like some do (it doesn't get into a lot of "fancy" chords--suspended, 11ths, 13ths, etc) it does give you 500 of the most useful ones. I also like the appendixes that have more blues, jazz, rock chords.
It's a good book all in all.
Book Description
Soul Jazz Guitar is a collection of Randy Johnston's tunes and solos specifically designed for the intermediate student. Rather than merely transcribing solos from his CDs, he plays material at a reasonable tempo specifically with the student in mind. There are tunes ("Downtime," "The Philadelphians," and "Rolling at the Summit") that appear on his commercial CDs, but included here are versions that are new and totally unique to this project. There are also some improvisations on some familiar "standard" progressions to help the student deal with these changes when he or she encounters them at jam sessions etc. Randy has tried to present his take on the Jazz language as clearly and faithfully as possible to make the solos easy to learn. He hopes that this will lead the student not just to imitation but also to develop his or her own approach to these progressions just as he developed his own approach from listening to the playing of his role models over the years.

Great book from a great player.......2007-02-23
This is a great book for those who love the organ combo, "soul jazz" sound. Fans of Pat Martino, George Benson, Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery,and of course, Randy Johnston, will find a very clear presentation of this style. Randy plays logical, memorable blues-drenched lines that you will want to learn and incorporate into your own thing. Especially useful because he includes solos over slow blues, medium blues, minor blues, and such standard progressions as It Could Happen to You, Polkadots, Solar, Killer Joe, Speak Low,and Tune Up. A fantastic vocabulary builder.

A poorly done biography of a blues legend........2002-12-17
There are so many poorly researched segments in this biography, that to list them would be too lengthy. Half of the book is biography, the other half academic deconstructions of Minnie's songs. The first 30 years of her life is nearly absent; questions remain unanswered even after that. The one good thing about this work, is that there's all sorts of room left for someone to write a definitive--or even near definitive--biography of this great blues singer and song writer.

Decent Book.......2004-03-24
I like Jesse Gress's work. It's often simple and to the point. There are a lot of lick books out there to choose from and I think that this one is good because it provides not just licks but a variety of phasing options and rythmic patterns to try them on. This helps jump start you on adapting the lick to yourself. The only thing I don't like about this book is that it's not wire/coil bound. If you're gonna buy it, immediately take it out to and get it re-bound with wire or coil. It will make it much easier to work with.

Why they should show you the inside.......2000-11-05
After waiting feverishly for this music book to arrive, I realized immediately on its receipt that it wasn't written in guitar tabulature, but standard notation. Since I don't read standard notation, it might as well be in braille. And because I know Benson uses some pretty interesting chords, the simple chords they use in the book can't possibly be right. If you're looking for a TABULATURE version of his work, look elsewhere.

Viewtiful Joe: Good game but a good guide?.......2003-11-08
I recently picked up this guide to compliment my purchase of the game Viewtiful Joe and this is what I think of it. As I first opened it I noticed it is very colorful which is a great thing and the guide was very helpful. The only cons are that it is very thin with 112 pages. I was dissapointed at how short the secrets section was though. Overall, I'd say any Joe fan that needs help to beat that hard boss or just to read it for fun should pick it up because it is very colorful and detailed.

the Core Strategic Vision approach for determining strategy is interesting, and is a good framework to develop a realistic vision.
The boundaries test to determine whether your vision will deliver what you expect (it forces you to expect something!) is something companies can't forget.
And the vision of a set of product's as not only one offering, but as one containing a platform and its pre-planned offerings, with pricing strategy, is essential to get profits for a long time.
It is full with examples, specially from the software arena. Recommended.

A big number of business examples, and good explanation of concepts. A deeper vision could be found in another books about this subject, so in my oppinion this book could be a good starting point, not recomended for advanced IT product managers.

I love this book: the concept of a "vector" for product
development is a terrific way to think about competition.
IMHO, this book is a must-read for all product managers,
product marketers and people involved in strategic decisions,
i.e. all senior executives.
That said, speaking as a five-time startup engineer, the advice
and examples in this book seem geared towards the core product
lines in larger companies, where you can credibly talk about
"two years from now" as opposed to wondering if you'll even be
in business, which is also the problem for new product lines at
large companies. The experience for the book comes from the
PRTM consulting firm, which was made famous for their work with
parallel product development at Intel. We hired them in the
early days at Inktomi, and found mixed success with their
process because we were terrified of immediate failure, and
they wanted to talk about version 3. Obviously, there's a
successful middle ground because Inktomi was a huge success in
the short term, but ultimately lost its strategic direction.

However, he may forget to remind readers that these require cost before enjoying the benefits, such as you need to hire a new tier of middle management if you company is too small to afford before; to establish the new channel capabilities to justify the investment on the platform bcz to access new markets; the IT system to calculate operation efficiencies such as engineering head count, material cost, and supply chain cost is also not cheap if you only have the option to use turn-key solution.....
It may be reasonable to equip product platform strategy only when benefits are greater than costs.

Great book.......2000-10-19
The idea of Product Platform or Product Architecture as being the basis for longer term success hadn't been something that I had taken into consideration in any depth before I read this book. Certainly being able to work with code and making sure it was "maintainable", and free of spagetti, was not new, but this book helped clarify for me the details of why it's imporant to plan out the product platform, and how a smartly based strategy that focuses the team on the platform first and the emd-user feature set in view of that, really improves the stability and performance of the product.
The team at Ernst and Young in Seattle that I worked with used this book as a reference as we built new web-based technologies. Thank you Michael McGrath!
I see there's a new version just released this month, and I will be purchasing it.

This is not a 10 minutes guide for a great product. This is really a great place to learn how to better understand product strategy. The book covers crucial issues such as the importance of good platform strategy, differentiation and others. The text is clear and full of real life examples.
Marketing managers and product managers will appreciate this excellent book.
