"A scrupulously argued, clearly written account of Hollywood's role in bringing America skipping and giggling from the Victorian world into the twentieth century."—Philip French, London Sunday Observer

"It is impossible to follow a narrow trail through the movies. The vistas keep opening, and May, linking movies to mass society, finds and makes new perceptions on emerging women, the rise of the studios, the special growth and appeal of Los Angeles, the nature of studio leadership and the early and persistent imputed corrupting power of film."—Charles Champlin, Los Angeles Times

"Lary May . . . has provided a set of new and rich insights into the changing patterns of American culture, 1890-1929. . . . His concentration on social and cultural history indirectly provides answers to questions which have baffled political historians for several decades."—David W. Noble, Minneapolis Tribune

"[Screening Out the Past is] a scrupulously argued, clearly written account of Hollywood's role in bringing America skipping and giggling from the Victorian world into the twentieth century. May is splendid on the psychology of the immigrant movie moguls, on Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford as post Great War role models, and many other things."—Philip French, London Sunday Observor

"Altogether, the book represents the most successful blending of movie and cultural history to date."—Benjamin McArthur, Journal of Social History

4 out of 5 stars film history.......2001-07-30

The book is great for understanding why film became popular. It incorporates the history of film with the general history of America, specifically during the turn of the century. The one problem that I had with the book was how repetetive it was. All in all I felt like I learned a lot.

5 out of 5 stars historical account of the motion picture industry.......1998-09-25

good, but too detailed. lost in the minute details at times and loose focus on the "big picture."

1 out of 5 stars Why this sorry state of scholarship?.......2000-01-31

Just as music theory, divorced from musicology and composition, has become an academic dumping ground for failed musicians, so musicology, divorced from music theory, has been overridden by amateur, inept "sociologists". This book is a case in point. (Oh and "Gender"--for what it's worth--is a GRAMMATICAL term. Humans and other animals don't have genders; they have sexes.)

(Ah, another aside: Now I happen to know a particular institution which at least until very recently irrationally discriminated against woman composers (that is, on the basis of their sex, not on the basis of their music or ability), and I don't suppose this institution is anomalous in this regard. Woman composer shouldn't have it tougher than men composers--men composers have it tough enough, and we should hear and read more of the outstanding woman composers of the present and past, but as someone below points out, to do so we'll have to look elsewhere than in this book.)

1 out of 5 stars Death to the Trees!.......2000-01-10

Not nearly as witty as its precursor, "Edna Distracted: Masculinist Perspectives on Declension and Skiing", still a truly self-important book everyone must read--or drop. Sure to secure tenure.

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth Reading.......1999-12-28

Why do people never think of women when they think of composers? This book does not directly address this issue, but the view of great music being produced only by men only for public listening needs challenging, and this book is one of a small number successfully making a serious effort to do so. If you have any interest in how culture (particularly music) works hand in hand with social power, you will find the perspectives in this book informative, revealing, and even fascinating.

          Book Description

Human Resource Champions issues a challenge to HR professionals: define the value you create and institute measures for your performance, or face the inevitable outsourcing of your function. Ulrich identifies four distinct roles that human resources staff must assume-strategic player, administrative expert, employee champion, and change agent. He provides hands-on tools that show HR professionals how they can operate in all four areas simultaneously and offers specific recommendations for partnering with line managers to deliver value and make their organizations more competitive.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Outlining a future for HR.......2006-04-13

Author Dave Ulrich reflects an awareness that many professionals keenly feel: in these highly competitive times, they must either evolve or stagnate. His book tells human resource (HR) leaders how to assume more vital, strategic roles within their organizations. He makes a convincing argument that successful companies must elevate HR to the role of a strategic partner, to enable it to implement programs that support an organization's goals. Whether reading any book can put you in the forefront of hands-on transformation remains to be seen, but this volume certainly offers plenty of real-world case studies to back up its premise that HR professionals must step into a new, vital strategic role. Each company and each HR department is so different, however, that it may be challenging to apply some of these broad themes to specific situations. That said, the themes themselves ring true, although the book is now more of a classic than the innovative think piece it was when new. We recommend it especially to HR professionals as a comprehensive look at why you must conquer so much territory to keep your organization competitive.

5 out of 5 stars Building a competitive organization with Ulrich.......2005-10-06

Ulrich has marked a new theory on human resources management system. According to him, company's HR manager has strategic position and more than just "a head of employee division". HR manager, said Ulrich, at least has four key positions in building a competitive organization: as (1) strategic partner, (2) administrative expert, (3) change agent, and (4) human resource champion. Ket's learn more strategic steps with this Number One Management Guru!

4 out of 5 stars Read if you are a businessman - shape up your HR department.......2005-08-07

HR Champions was the first mainstream book that looked at HR as more than just an administrative department. Regrettably, in the eight years since it's publication, few companies have truly taken heed. Many HR "professionals" (sic) quote Ulrich's work but few practice it.

This is a well written book crisp, devoid of too many clichés, practical, comprehensive. Forget those useless university HR text books, this one should form the base of your knowledge of the function. But make sure you keep up with the latest trends.

          4 out of 5 stars It's a classic.......2004-10-07

When Fortune Magazine published "Taking on the Last Bureaucracy" in 1996, a gauntlet was thrown down for the HR community. Thomas Stewart, Fortune columnist, indicted the professional Human Resources community on many fronts. The most damning was, though, that HR added nothing to the achievement of strategic organizational purpose.

This book was the best response to that challenge, and it was a great start. I've assigned this book to my HR management graduate students since 1998, and have not regretted it.

Yes, it is somewhat outdated now, but should be read for its role in reshaping the very definition of HR work. Sorry to say that its companion volume, "Delivering Results," is now out of print, but it can still be obtained.

A recommendation: read this book along with "The HR Scorecard." They work together almost seamlessly.

3 out of 5 stars basically good, but no longer cutting edge.......2004-02-21

I read this book back in grad school (degree in HR). While it was current then, the concepts are no longer cutting edge/benchmark HR. This is a well-written book and is helpful for the HR novice to gain an understanding of the evolution of HR as a profession. However, for those who already work in an organization where HR is not only at the table, but setting the strategic direction hand in hand with the CEO as a valued member of the leadership team, this book could use a few more chapters. In the last 5 years many companies have moved past the "recognizing HR as a player" stage and are firmly in a space where there is a set expectation of HR - to help set the stategic direction for obtaining their revenue and market growth targets. It is in these areas that I would like to see the next ground breaking insights from Ulrich.

                Book Description

A company's workforce is its most valuable asset. It is the employees who translate an organization's strategy into reality, interact with consumers, and determine the corporate brand. This updated edition of Living the Brand demonstrates how a participatory approach can enhance employee commitment, improve service standards, and focus effort to deliver business goals. This practical and inspirational book is about how organizations can empower their employees and create "brand champions." Using international examples, Nicholas Ind shows that employees flourish in organizations where they identify with the brand, and organizations flourish when the brand creates meaning for the employee. Living the Brand shows how to make this happen.

                      Book Description

Are the combined human resources at CHAMPION INDUSTRIES, INC. productive? There is no absolute answer to this question. This report considers the extent to which the company's labor deployment indicators differ from global benchmarks. In this report we consider forecasts of differences between labor ratios and the resulting return on this human investment compared to global benchmarks; the estimation of such differences is commonly called a "gap analysis." What is the ratio of short-term and long-term assets to employee? What are typical capital-labor ratios? How different are these ratios to companies serving the same link in the value chain? What are the average sales and net profits per employee compared to global benchmarks? These and over 50 other indicators of labor productivity are considered in this report. The report does so by going beyond traditional analyses by considering companies competing in the same or similar industrial classification at a global level. The goal of this report, therefore, is to assist consultants, human resource managers, strategic planners, and corporate officers in gauging estimates of a company's human resource indicators compared to firms competing or participating in the same economic sector, at the global level. This report is not about whether a particular company or industry has performed well or poorly in the past or will do so in the future. With the globalization of markets, greater foreign competition, and the reduction of entry barriers, it becomes all the more important to benchmark a company's human resource indicators against other firms on a worldwide basis. Doing so, however, is not an obvious task. First, one needs to find firms competing in the same sector, but not necessarily competing directly with the company in local markets. These firms should not be perceived, therefore, to be direct competitors to the company in question, but simply those that have been classified by various sources (e.g. EDGAR or similar foreign filings), as competing to serve customers in the same link of the value chain, or broad industrial classification, as identified by SIC, NAICS or similar codes. Second, given the international nature of the task, one needs to control for exchange rate volatility. Finally, one needs use comparable financial standards. This report overcomes these issues and gives full human resources benchmarks vis-a-vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. Benchmarks cover labor-asset ratios, labor-liability ratios, and labor-income ratios. Since our reports are printed on demand, the statistics reported are for the latest quarter and are the most up to date available (4 updates are produced each year). Each report provides over 100 statistics and 40 graphs to the reader. This reports is on CHAMPION INDUSTRIES, INC., HUNTINGTON, USA.
