    Book Description

A master of modern European cinema and a key figure in the Italian neorealist movement, Roberto Rossellini had one of the longest and most varied careers of all major directors. From Rome Open City and Paisà through to the "Bergman" classics Stromboli and Journey to Italy and his later work for television, Rossellini's work and ideas had a profound influence on filmmaking and criticism.
This specially commissioned overview of Rossellini's works examines key issues and themes covering all phases of his career. Leading critics from across the world examine, among other issues, the Fascist context of Rossellini's early work, the view of Europe that emerges in his films, the stylistic trajectory of the work through neorealism and beyond and its influence on the French New Wave, the issues of representation that emerge in later films and his extensive work for television. The significance of Rossellini's relationships with Ingrid Bergman and Anna Magnani is discussed and the book also includes a dossier section of materials providing an overview of the most important facts and documents concerning the director.

2 out of 5 stars Biassed as though written by great Rossellini's fan.......2004-07-17

This book seems a frivolous essay of Rossellini's art and life and must have been written by a great Rossellini's fan and destined to pour the balm on his fans' souls. But it's much too biassed to other filmmakers, considered even more prominent than Rossellini. The author devoted many words to stress the battle and dislike between Rossellini and Visconti and to demolish the latter's reputation as a director and as a man (a homosexual, a sadist, a maniac Communist....). The question is "Why?" The answer is "Ordinary envy" as the one made only three well-known movies and didn't steped out the limits of neorealism and the other stretched the neorealism to the philosophical multy-layerd parable (as "La terra trema" is) and then became one of the most prominent world's filmmakers. God will judge Mr. Galagher for his opus that succumbs even to slander (that Visconti asked Magnani to have an abortion in order to take part in his Ossessione) but I'll never take this book in my hands any more.

5 out of 5 stars Fasten your seat belt.......2001-07-08

Stepping into these adventures is like getting into the passenger seat of Rossellini's Ferrari - it will take you far, fast. Rossellini was not simply one of the greatest filmmakers, he was also a modern Ulysses whose life was the stuff of fable and whose fables were his life spliced into 24 frames per second. Tag Gallagher has done a superb thing by not attempting to divorce them, and the result is a work of art in its own right that has more to say about the 20th century than a boatload of "important" novels and sententious tomes. On top of that, it's a damn good read.

5 out of 5 stars The Entire Works of Rossellini, at last..........2000-06-19

Roberto Rossellini is one of the most influencial figure in film history. A few of his films changed the way movies are made. Open City and Paisan shocked the world. Voyage in Italy changed the lives of many filmmakers, from Jean-Luc Godard to Martin Scorsese. Yet, no serious study was done about his entire body of work, before this book. Rosselini is a mysterious figure. His style changes from a decade to another. Also, many of his films, like Vanina Vanini or Blaze Pascal, are rarely screened. His carrer is also sort of tarnished because of his affair and marriage with Ingrid Bergman. In fact, most f not-so-serious movie fans know his name as only the guy who brought her to Italy. The truth is, they made some of the most beautiful films in film history: Voyage in Italy, Stromboli, Europe 1951... Gallagher, who is also known with his magnificent work about John Ford, applied the same tactics to write about Rossellini: to carefully study each film, from shot to shot. It is an impressive book. It takes a lot of time to read, perhaps, but not aslong as the author took to write (20 years). His argument is sober and careful, yet you can feel the passion behind it, just as you can feel from the later works of Rossellini himself. In studying each film with great attention, the author finds out, and explains to us, that in spite of the differences in their appearance, there is a single, unique, coherent style, logic, and genius behind this impressive body of works. It is one of the most impressive book about cinema. One regretable thing is that, most of the films disscussed in this book, we can't see them.

    Book Description

Roberto Rossellini, famous Italian film director and icon of neorealism, would have been one hundred years old on May 8, 2006. Isabella Rossellini, daughter of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini, and herself a film star, bestselling author and celebrated photo model, has created two very special homages to her father on the centenary of his birth: a short film entitled My Dad is 100 Years Old, directed by Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin as director—and this many-voiced, richly illustrated book of remembrance. In the Name of the Father, the Daughter and the Holy Spirits, Remembering Roberto Rossellini, features texts and illustrations by Isabella Rossellini; entries by Ingrid Bergman, Roberto Rossellini, François Truffaut, Eric Rohmer and Guy Maddin; and numerous film stills and photographs by Herbert List, Clifford Coffin, Gordon Parks, David Seymour, and many others.

Texts by Isabella Rossellini, Ingrid Bergman, Federico Fellini and many others

Roberto Rossellini, (May 8, 1906 - June 3, 1977) is considered one of the most innovative and influential of post-war film directors. Among his most significant films are: Rome, Open City (1945, with Anna Magnani), Stromboli (1950, with Ingrid Bergman) and Germany, Year Zero which he filmed in 1948, working with amateur actors in a bombed-out Berlin. He was married to Ingrid Bergman from 1950-1957 and had three children with her, one of whom is Isabella.

Isabella Rossellini was born in 1952 and grew up in Rome and Paris. At the age of nineteen she moved to New York where she began her career as a film actress, under the direction of David Lynch in particular, and achieved international fame as the exclusive model for Lancôme.

5 out of 5 stars Charming, affectionate family memento.......2006-08-21

Though Roberto Rossellini is one of the least-known of the great filmmakers (many of his films are difficult to see for various reasons of copyright, etc.), he was incredibly influential and highly prolific. Though this book doesn't really help to explain his work, it does provide a wonderfully emotional and generous overview of his life, and his impact on his daughter, Isabella Rossellini. As a bonus, included in the book is the DVD of the short film "My Dad Is 100 Years Old", written by Isabella Rossellini and directed by the Canadian fantasist Guy Maddin. The film is utterly charming, but in all of this, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that Rossellini was one of the most important filmmakers of all time, whose NeoRealist classics ("Open City", "Paisan", "Germany Year Zero") proved to be influential, and whose films from the 1950s ("Stromboli", "Viaggio in Italia", "Fear") introduced themes of alienation and urban malaise which would be developed in films by Antonioni, Godard, Bertolucci and many others. And there is a sadness to the book, because Isabella Rossellini seems to have no consciousness of the importance of her father's actual achievements, she seems to fixate on how her father is seen in Hollywood commercial terms, which is totally incongruous. Yet it's so obvious that this is a labor of great love, and that feeling overwhelms everything else.

      Book Description

The Films of Roberto Rossellini traces the career of one of the most influential Italian filmmakers through close analysis of the seven films that mark important turning points in his evolution: The Man with a Cross (1943), Open City (1945), Paisan (1946), The Machine to Kill Bad People (1948-52), Voyage in Italy (1953), General della Rovere(1959), and The Rise to Power of Louis XIV (1966). Beginning with Rossellini's work within the fascist cinema, it discusses his invention of neorealism, a new cinematic style that resulted in several classics during the immediate postwar period. Almost immediately, however, Rossellini's continually evolving style moved beyond mere social realism to reveal other aspects of the camera's gaze, as is apparent in the films he made with Ingrid Bergman during the 1950s; though unpopular, these works had a tremendous impact on the French New Wave critics and directors. Rossellini's late career marks a return to his nonrealist period, now critically reexamined, in such works as the commercially successful General della Rovere, and his eventual turn to the creation of didactic films for television.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Bondanella on a Classic Italian Director.......2000-03-29

Having taken 2 of Professor Bondanella's courses, I probablyhave a bit of a bias towards this book. But I think I can say with allhonesty that anyone who finds Rossellini or neo-realism interesting will find this an extremely entertaining and informative book. The writing style is high-browed with wit and humor thrown in, as Rosselini was after all a very larger than life figure who was admired in no small part by the professor for his off-the-cuff approch to filmaking and his famous escipades with beautiful women such as Ingrid Bergman. Bondanella is intimately familiar with the study of neo-realism and the most widely acclaimed directors of this sub-genre of film. He shares his wealth of knowledge freely and warmly; overall an extremely satisfying read.

        Book Description

This is the first full-length study in any language of the most significant film director of Italian Neorealism. Peter Brunette combines close analyses of Roberto Rossellini's formal and narrative style with a thorough account of his position in the political and cultural landscape of postwar Italy. More than forty films are explored, including Open City, Paisan, Voyage to Italy, The Rise to Power of Louis XIV, and films made in the director's later years that documented crucial epochs in human history.
Brunette's book is based on eight years of research, during which he interviewed members of the director's family as well as Rossellini himself. Brunette also draws on an enormous body of European and American criticism and discusses the various intellectual debates spawned by the director's work. This landmark study is both a comprehensive introduction to one of the most influential practitioners of the contemporary cinema and a boldly original discussion of Italian Neorealism.

Today the walking miracle that is Iggy Pop continues to record, perform and shock. Yet in terms of music and celluloid history, 1972 was the year. During this time, Iggy & the Stooges-at the height of their musical powers and legendary excesses - recorded the now-seminal album Raw Power and performed their only UK gig at London's The Scala.

Raw Power also features an exclusive interview conducted between Mick Rock and Iggy Pop in 1972, and a brand new introduction by Mick himself.

In March 1972, Iggy and James, both completely off heroin, went on England to recruit a new band and start recording the album for CBS. In June joined Ron and Scott Asheton, and together worked on the new recordings until September same year. During their stay in London, The Stooges played only one concert in the King's Cross Cinema. Iggy was dressed only in silver lame trousers and had silver hair, black boots and black lipstick, his show and his mistreatment of audience had schocked all present. It was to be their only show outside America. This book is photographic report from this show, a few photo sessions of the whole band, and also contains common photos with David Bowie and Lou Reed, captured on camera by legendary rock photgrapher, Mick Rock. The book also contains his introduction and interview between virtuoso with camera Mick Rock and rock monster Iggy Pop, conducted in 1972. If you like album cover of "Raw Power", this book is made for you. Since there is no audio or video recording from any of The Stooges concert in 1972, this book offers unique experience for the band admirers. Raw Power! Look for the answer from the title in the book.

IGGY POP & THE STOOGES, OUTTA DETROIT, WERE PRETTY MUCH THE UNIVERSALLY UNDISPUTED GREATEST INFLUENCE ON THE PUNK ROCK SCENE OF 1976-1977, WHICH PRODUCED CLASSIC BANDS LIKE THE CLASH AND THE SEX PISTOLS. IGGY & THE STOOGES' RECORDING CAREER LASTED FROM 1969-1973, RECORDING 3 STUDIO ALBUMS AND ONE NOTORIOUS LIVE ALBUM. 1972 WAS THE PEAK OF IGGY AND THE STOOGES BRILLIANCE AND OUTRAGEOUSNESS - IGGY'S ANTICS AND APPEARANCE MAKE THE SEX PISTOLS LOOK TAME IN COMPARISON. IF YOU WANT TO ACTUALLY SEE ROCK N ROLL, BESIDES HEARING IT - THIS IS THE BOOK THAT SHOWS WHAT ROCK N ROLL, AT IT'S MOST EXCITING, LOOKS LIKE. BLOOD AND MAKEUP AND BIZARRE/COMICAL/SICK POSES AND VISUAL RAW POWER! A MUST FOR EVERY IGGY/STOOGES/PUNK ROCK FAN, AND VERY LIKELY A FEAST FOR THE EYES FOR FANS OF ALL TYPES OF MUSIC!

This book is a blackjack nuclear bomb. There is information in it that has never appeared anywhere except in the secret world inhabited by a handful of elite professional blackjack players. Learn real strategies that not only the casinos don't want you to know, but that many of the greatest blackjack players would prefer to keep all to themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely interesting coverage of some advanced BJ methods.......2006-01-18

This is a entertaining and interesting manual of "how-to" methods to win money in casinos at blackjack. The range of subject material is quite impressive. Many ideas are a revelation-the author seems to have developed a method of winning by observing the pick-up and discard order of card sequences, for example, something I've never read about anywhere. Although I'm not a serious blackjack player-from what I can tell these ideas do seem to check out at the tables. If I was dumped in the middle of Las Vegas and told to make a fortune or die trying, then this is the one book I would take with me.

What this book definitely isn't is another, basic strategy, count-cards and a few filler anecdotes book.

1 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor - Do not buy this book !.......2005-10-01

This book has some very basic discussion on card counting and hardly helpful. It discusses some "advanced techniques" such as "Card Steering", "Shadow Play" etc which requires a very weak dealer, a professional blackjack team, lots of bankroll and a casino without surveillance. Most of these "advantage play methods" are not author's own idea and these sounded more like gambling myths than facts. Do yourself a favor - Do not buy this book !

                4 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2003-10-18

One of the best current books on the blackjack market today! I also recommend, Gregorian Strategy for multiple deck blackjack.

                5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read.......2002-09-24

This book was recommended to me by a friend. Before reading the book I had never gambled before. That was soon to change. The book is incredably readable and even funny. The recounting of his stories concerning the "Act" had me in stitches, imagining him tipping chips all over the place. On a serious note the information is powerful stuff arming you with knowledge to earn yourself quite a tidy sum, if you stick to the rules. Marketing guys often have slogans like "This book will make you rich." It has never been more true than with this book. It is a gold mine. Thanks to John May I have earnt myself a tidy sum and shall continue to do so. Well done John May.

5 out of 5 stars You must buy this masterpiece of blackjack literature.......2002-07-19

As a serious, if recreational, gambler, I really have to commend the writer on the best blackjack book of the modern era.

Modern blackjack doesn't really bear much resemblance to the game talked about in most blackjack books. Casinos don't use single-decks any more, and they know a great deal about card counting, which is the only way of getting an edge most books cover. "Get The Edge" is very, very different. Despite a readable, almost populist style, May has some really incredible ideas.
For example, did you ever consider that the order you throw the cards back to the dealer in could influence your post-shuffle advantage? Sound like sorcery? Maybe, but the method is substantiated with rigorous proof and explanation. These methods are'nt just the subject of pure theory and computer simulation, with many of them May shows you how they work by getting you to try them out with just a deck of cards and a kitchen table.

Where other authors don't even mention the existence of devices like the card shuffling machines commonly used nowadays May not only talks about them but uses the casinos tricks against them. Think you can't beat a continuous shuffling machine? Well, its not easy, but it is possible and May shows you how with reference to real-world casino coups and his incredible perception.

The really bad thing about this book is that May just goes too far with what he is prepared to reveal. Some of us who knew about, for example, card-steering, would prefer he'd left that one out. I made a killing with that trick over the years and publishing it can only make things more difficult for players.

Nonetheless the majority of the book is ground-breaking and innovative, in a way no blackjack book has been since the publication of Thorp's "Beat The Dealer".

Real estate is as much about people as it is about property, and, after location, success in real estate depends upon understanding the motives of those who play the game, because many critical decisions revolve around what real estate people think, how they act and why. The Real Estate Game, by William J. Poorvu and Jeffrey L. Cruikshank, is a clear, comprehensive overview illustrated with real-life experiences about individual investors, small developers, and moguls. Poorvu has developed and managed real estate and taught real estate investing at the Harvard Business School for over 35 years. This book is drawn from his course, and is designed to help investors make the right decisions derived from the right assumptions and to provide an insider's perspective on how to spot risks and develop strategies that provide protection and adequate investment returns.

The book uses the analogy of a game to illustrate some of the intricate and unpredictable interactions in real estate deals, and it lays out the rules of the game, including identification of the key players and periods of play: concept, commitment, development, operation, reward, and reinvestment. Readers are taught to be "value investors," ready to buy at the right price at the right time, because the best opportunities come from buying at a discount-to-replacement cost. The value investor must be prepared to sell at the right juncture, and must not be compelled to be in the game when conditions make the game not worth playing.

The case studies that run through the book show how to evaluate, develop, and operate all kinds of real estate investments from the points of view of all involved in the process. There's an extensive appendix covering the different property types, and the authors' "back-of-the-envelope" method for analyzing the financial implications of a potential deal is probably worth the book's weight in gold. --Scott Harrison

                Book Description

The Real Estate Game is a comprehensive guide to successful real estate investment from one of the masters in the field. Drawing upon four decades of experience developing, owning, and managing properties and on almost thirty years of teaching at the Harvard Business School, William J. Poorvu offers an insider's perspective on how to make smart decisions about real estate.

The real estate "game" is played by people, and it's the stories of real people that make Poorvu's introduction to the industry colorful and interesting. The reader meets players ranging from real estate moguls to small-scale developers to individual investors in exotic investment instruments. Their stories evolve throughout the book and illustrate how these people -- with all their complicated needs, talents, and motives -- fit into the larger process and context.

In clear and nontechnical language, Poorvu explains how variables -- players, properties, capital markets, and the external environment -- come together to influence the shape and outcome of a real estate deal. He explains the time frame for different kinds of real estate investments and walks the reader through the key "periods of play" in the real estate game: concept, commitment, development, operation, reward, and reinvestment.

The Real Estate Game introduces a simple but powerful "back-of-the-envelope" technique for analyzing the financial implications of a potential deal. Using this tool and others, Poorvu shows readers how to use direct investments, syndicates, and REITs to get into the real estate game across a broad range of property types: residential, office, hotel, industrial, and retail.

Offering unique insight into the ways that developers and investors can create value, The Real Estate Game is both a perfect introduction for the novice and an invaluable overview for the experienced professional.

5 out of 5 stars Great read for serious investors.......2007-09-01

Mr. Poorvu's book does an excellent job of teaching investors how to analyze real estate deals. It reads a bit like a text book but serious investors will appreciate the intelligence and depth of the content.

5 out of 5 stars Great for deepening understanding of subject..........2007-03-12

I found this book extrememly valuable in deepening my understanding of the subject and providing perspective for me to carry my understanding further on my own by looking at market information and events.
Useful for beginner to intermediate level real estate interested people.

4 out of 5 stars Not a get rich quick scheme.......2006-03-15

William Poorvu teaches at the Harvard Business School and also invests and develops on his own. He uses case studies to show examples of the techniques and rules he uses when investing which is how MBA's are taught. Overall its some great real world advice with no promises of making you a millionaire overnight.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the RE Investment Books!.......2003-12-18

The vast majority of real estate investment books to be found in the Barnes & Noble investment section offer variations of Mark Twain's stock market advice: "making money in stocks is easy. Only buy a stock if it goes up; if it doesn't go up, don't buy it." By contrast, Poorvu walks readers through myriad real estate investment situations, fleshing out the risks and rewards, and the mindsets of the various players. While written in an anecdotal style replete with real-life examples, the book also presents an encyclopedic overview of investment opportunities (direct, REIT, syndicates, etc.) and asset categories (residential, commercial, industrial, etc.). This is a real estate investment book written by an adult, for adults -- in contrast to all the other get-rich-quick-no-money-down titles targeting gullible novices.

5 out of 5 stars A Sophisticated Yet Interesting Real Estate book.......2003-02-10

Harvard Business School Professor and real estate investor William Poorvu has written a book about real estate is far above most real estate books. This book is nowhere near the run of the mill generic real estate book that tries to tell everything about real estate to people who don't have a clue. "The Real Estate Game" is a sophisticated commercial real estate book written by a real estate insider. This is not a book about buying your first house with no down payment.

What this is, is a book about commercial real estate projects from concept, commitment, development, operations, and harvest. The authors bring a behind the scenes and insiders' approach to commercial development. He lays it out in the form of a game with properties, capital markets, players and external environment. One of the stories in the book is that of Bill Zeckendorf's classic assemblage of Swift slaughterhouses into the United Nations property and vicinity. Included in the book is the authors' commercial due diligence checklist. This book would be most interesting to a person involved in commercial real estate, someone interested in commercial real estate or someone interested in the business of commercial real estate. I think that this is the kind of book that you can refer back to time and time again. There is a lot of information in this book and it may even be a book that you will want to read more than once. It has a depth, and quality of information contained far superior to the average mass media real estate book without the dryness of a real estate textbook
