I don't read a lot of biographies because I often find the amount of detail to be excruciatingly excessive, and often the writer, even if he knows the person he is writing about personally, often tends to descend into sharp criticism of his subject, as if that were the norm in our age of gossip and entertainment. Perhaps the necessary detachment in this case comes from the fact that Brahms died just over a hundred years ago, for his was not a perfect character!

I have always liked Brahms' compositions quite a bit, especially his chamber music, which is among the best. Yet I have never bothered to read a biography of the composer. I only read this one because a relative of mine is handling the estate of one of the author's wives (not Irene, the collaborator), and while visiting this relative I was offered the book. Fortunately, from the outset I thoroughly enjoyed reading Prof. Geiringer's biography.

Geiringer acknowledges that there have been many other fine biographies of Brahms, and he decided to write one only because he was given access to about a thousand letters of correspondence Brahms received from well-know artists like the Schumann's, the violinist Joachim, and many others. Geiringer combines a vast knowledge of Brahms' life and music with these letters to produce a highly readable and entertaining work, w/o a hint of sensationalism.

In order to leave enough room for a discussion of Brahms' extensive output, the author limits his discussion of the composer's life to about 200 pages, yet it is quite thorough. Brahms' early life of extreme poverty is discussed w/o trying to evoke sympathy, followed by the burgeoniong composer's failure to get a post in his native Hamburg, a lifelong hurt for Brahms, but which very fortuitously causes him to move eventually to Vienna, where his music flowers in a very supportive environment. The young composer's career is given a huge push by a letter Robert Schumann writes in a widely read journal, and Brahms fulfills those expectations, though he surely destroys many compositions we would love to hear, because of his high standards. Also, Brahms, unlike other composers, receives the accolades he deserves while still alive and composing.

The view we get of Brahms is balanced - we see his good humor and we also read the famous quote of the composer, who, upon leaving a party, wonders if there is anyone there he has not insulted! Also, while Brahms reaches tremendous heights in his art, he never marries in order to achieve it, and we read about the women (mostly singers of his choral music) he loves but cannot attach himself to. No, Brahms is far from perfect, yet the composer is unfailingly helpful and generous to his family, friends, and also to other composers - Dvorak usually comes to mind in this respect.

Following the biographical discussion of Brahms' life, the author as musicologist again provides a thorough but not excessive discussion of the different kinds of works the composer put out, from the chamber music to the many varieties of choral works.

Towards the end of the book Geiringer writes an excellent chapter called "The Man And The Artist," a thorough summary that, as expected, is succinct yet not sensational in any way.

5 out of 5 stars Brahms: His Life and Work (Third Edition).......2000-06-27

Wonderfully written book! I borrowed it from a friend and I love it so much I am going to buy it! This book is conveniently divided into three sections (Brahm's life, work, and letters). There are many references to his actual letters throughout the book. Brahm's certainly had an interesting life (definitely more interesting than what I had learned in music classes!) This book explains the relation between his music and life experiences very effectively. Quite a joy to read!

If you've ever wanted to know more about the great master, check out this book which was recommended even by the great Menuhin. From start to finish, Schauffler crams the book with tidbits about Brahms ranging from the hilarious to deeply moving.

5 out of 5 stars The Brahms not found in most biographies !.......1998-07-14

Read the book in the college library 45 years ago. In the book, Shauffler details a Johannes Brahms not found in most biographies. There are incidents in his early life dealing with his attitude toward women ( and, of course, much later in his relationship with Robert and more especially, Clara Schumann.) There is also a number of stories related to his tour with the violinist Joachim. Details of his meeting with Johann Strauss Jr., his reactions to his own symphonies, his attitude toward his students, reasons why he never married, his early career as a pianist in "sporting houses", his relationship with prostitutes, why he could never marry. There are many technical details about his music that are perfectly understandable to musicians as well as most laymen. A book for the ages if you are interested in the life of Brahms.

          Book Description

Text extracted from opening pages of book: DR, KAR ' < CUSTODIAN OF THE GOLLECTIQNS* 0& THE GESELLSgHAFT DER MUSIKFREUNDfc f; < VIENN. A BRAHMS HIS LIFE AND WORK TRANSLATED BY H. B. WEINER & BERNARD MIALL BOSTON AND NEW - YORK HOUGHTON MIFFON COMPANY LLi t >-> LL BRAHMS AT THE AGE OF TWENTY, BY LAURENS ( 1853) TO THE MEMORY OF MY MOTHER PREFACE Is a new biography of Brahms really necessary? Have not enough books been written on the master's life? These questions will be asked by many who hear of this new publication. The answer can only be: Undoubtedly, the number of first-rate books on Brahms is considerable ; but so many hitherto unknown documents relating to Brahms, as man and as artist, have recently come to light, that a new work seems not only justified, but really essential. A unique body of material, until now inaccessible to other investigators, has been placed at my disposal. It consists of over a thousand letters received by Brahms from all sorts of correspondents. In accordance with an agreement between Brahms's heirs, they were handed over to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, and there kept under official seal. As Custodian of this collection, I was authorized to be the first - to read and use them for the purpose of my book. The bulk of the letters are from Brahms's mother, father, brother, and sister. They are supplemented by letters from a large number of eminent persons, among them some of Brahms's intimate friends; for example: Eugen d'Albert, Adolf Brodsky, Daniela von Bulow, Fried rich Chrysander, Peter Cornelius, Anton Dvorak, John Farmer, Benjamin Godard, Edouard Grieg, Sir George Grove, Sir George Henschel, Ferdinand Hiller, Hermann Kretzschmar, Franz Liszt, Adolf Menzel, Arthur Nikisch, Gustav Nottebohm, C. F. Pohl, Anton Rubinstein, Robert Schumann, Richard Strauss, Karl Tausig, Mathilde Wesen donck. From this valuable source new and interesting documents are available for almost every period of the master's life. Important supplements to these are : the letters from Clara Schumann and Joseph Joachim to Brahms's parents; a particularly interesting letter from Brahms to Amalie Joachim; numerous letters from Brahms to Hans von Billow; and Brahms's correspondence with J. Allgeyer, A* I0 BRAHMS: HIS LIFE AND WORK which is in the possession of the Viennese Municipal Library, and has been made available by the courtesy of Professor Alfred Orel. Unknown as yet in the English Brahms litera ture is the correspondence between Brahms and Eusebius Mandyczewski, the former librarian of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde ( published by me in 1933), Brahms 's correspondence with Theodor Billroth ( recently published by Dr. Gottlieb-Billroth), and also the master's letters to his Hamburg relatives ( which were published in 1933 by Stephenson). With reference to the master's works, I was once more enabled to draw upon extensive material, which, though of the highest importance, had remained almost unnoticed in former biographies of Brahms. This material consists of the composer's sketches, also preserved by the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde ( the heir to his artistic legacy), which are exceptionally rare, as he generally destroyed all his first drafts. In addition to this there are the manuscripts, which were thoroughly studied, as they give valuable indications of the changes which many compositions underwent between their first conception and their publication. The c ' Gesell schaft der Musikfreunde possesses also Brahms's own collection of single copies of each of his published compo sitions, in which he noted corrections and alterations for possible further editions, throwing light on his later attitude to his works. Taken as a whole, this material illustrates the different phases in the process of composition, and gives one a profound insight into the master's mode , of working. In the musical chapters I have not arranged the composi tions under the Opus numbers referring to the year of publication the mo

You always said you were smart. Now here's a chance to prove it, with the most challenging crossword collection ever.

There are very few black squares in these crosswords, which means that most of the answers are long. Some of the information required challenges every facet of your general knowledge. And even when the answers aren't hard, the clues can be quite tricky. Try this, in the long answer category: what's a 15-letter word for "Psychiatrists' suggestions, sometimes"? In the area of specialized learning, do you know what "Limón or Vaníla" (10 letters) refers to? And in the matter of tricky clues: what's the five-letter answer to "'_____ nui loa' ('Fondest regards,' in Maui)"? Give up? Answers: ANTIDEPRESSANTS, BACARDI RUM, and ALOHA. If you can fill in all the blanks in these 72 cranium crushers, you're super smart, indeed.

...when I finally finished Longo's second cranium crushing crossword book (CCC2 as I would call this Mensa Crosswords book), today, was.......

"Now what am I going to do with the rest of my life?"

What I mean by this is: This was simply the very best crossword book I have ever (almost) completed!

                        Lemme explain:

Most chronic solvers like myself consider themselves connoisseurs to justify their massive fun and time investment. We also think it somehow "sharpens" our brains or prevents or postpones early Alzheimer changes. Very good chance it does. While this book may not be proven to increase IQ points in double blind controlled studies, it most certainly slows down the IQ point loss we young 60-year old whippersnappers can often experience.

If you are one of those many people I know who feel their IQ is much higher than what it is in reality, and are buying this book to prove it....fuhgedaboutit! You will meet with massive defeat! The book is grizzly, grueling, painful, thorny, every step of the way. I found it to be measurably harder than CCC1, Longo's first book, and it took me a bit longer to solve CCC2 than CCC1. I would like to think the reason for this is not because I turned 60 last month, but because it really is harder chiefly because Longo was the first pioneering cruciverbalist to say bye-bye to restraining American symmetry and do things, all difficult for him and you, to make things MUCH more interesting and tough.

Bye-bye American symmetry, and good riddance. We will never miss you!

I promise you that if you are a masochistic habanero chewer and like to burn off your nose hairs with lighter fluid just to prove how macho you are, this book is for you. It rocks. The 2 very unique things about Mensa Crosswords is that:

#1: Every crossword will be completely different from any other one you have ever solved. Every puzzle will have MANY words and phrases you have never seen before.

#2: Every puzzle will have at least one or two hall-of-fame clues which you will recall for many days or months and chuckle when you think about them.

But make no mistake---Longo will boldly keep his reputation as America's #1 wholesome constructor, and king of smooth, seamless entries.

The main drawback of the book will be, that, after you are finished, and probably are also bloody, fried, comatose, perhaps angry, but knowing you have permanently doubled your IQ (which in my case is now up to 140), you will say:

"Now what am I going to do with the rest of my life?"

                        Respectively submitted,

Delivers as described, large swaths of white squares, many answers stacked and traversing the entire width or height of the diagram. Takes a long time to figure out, but when you do (aha!), the letters fill in quickly due to the long answers cascading together. The clues are clever and contemporary, referencing the latest events and popular culture. If you like the Saturday NY Times puzzles, this book is for you, because these puzzles are even harder.

Also, half the puzzles do not follow the traditional symmetry of grid design. Personally, I didn't mind at all.

A thoughtful touch is the book design: spiral bound pages, stiff covers, bright white paper make for convenient solving. The solution pages are bound so that the appropriate answer appears directly under the puzzle you're attempting -- another nice touch.

Many "tough" crossword compilations fall in the medium-to-hard category, not nearly challenging enough for those of us who love to torture ourselves by staring at arcane clues, trying to figure out what the puzzler was thinking ... of course, the joy of the "aha" moment more than compensates for the torture. The Mensa Crosswords, I'm happy to say, live up to the "cranium-crushing" description. (I finished them, but I admit to peeking at the answers on a few occasions!) I hope Mr. Longo will favor us with a Volume 2 soon.

                        Book Description

No wonder it’s America’s number one pastime--researchers have found that doing crossword puzzles will improve your memory when you’re older, and, if you’re a kid, improve your vocabulary and better your chances of getting into the best colleges. What makes this collection special? The answers are fairly common words and phrases, but the clues are diabolically difficult. They’re full of mischievous misdirections, trivia, puns, and other trickery. Try these clues: “Star witness” (ten letters), “Change of heart” (fifteen letters), 2001 Hollywood Walk of Fame star recipient (eight letters). Answers: ASTRONOMER, ORGAN TRANSPLANT, DEAR ABBY. Warning: the last 10 are the hardest of all.

5 out of 5 stars The Title Is Not Just Hype.......2007-06-20

I'm a reasonably good crossworder; I'm no Jon Delfin but I do the Saturday NYT in 30 minutes or less most of the time. Yet, the first puzzle in this diabolical book took me 45 minutes and the next one took over 60!

The difficulty is not achieved in the old Maleska manner, by using ridiculous obscure words, but rather by incredibly clever clue writing, the likes of which is rarely seen but which you owe it to yourself to experience and enjoy. Very tough puzzles, yet eminently solvable with time and patience, and very rewarding in the end.

I have a huge collection of crossword books and this has got to be one of the very best. Containing 72 puzzles which represents hours of entertainment, the book is a wonderful value.

                        5 out of 5 stars Tasty!.......2003-12-31

Am almost through with this book, and am dreading withdrawal symptoms, because I don't see any more in this series for sale yet. Frank, get cracking! We need at least one a day for mental health reasons.

What makes these puzzles so much fun is that there are very few definitive answers, so you have to fill it in a little at a time at first, regardless of how good you are. But they all fall in place in time. It must be that Frank's sense of humor and mine are pretty close, because a fair number of my longshot answers have actually paid off.

If only the late-week NY Times puzzles hold your interest anymore, get this book now! But solve them slowly until a continued supply is assured.

5 out of 5 stars IMHO, book of the year!.......2002-08-21

OK, I knocked off all CCCs. Whew. The quickest one was 20-30 minutes, the toughest was 2-3 hours, but as you all know, the time measurements are very subjective depending on how long one keeps ones attention on the puzzle and how many (and long) breaks one takes.

There appears to be no apparent major progression of difficulty. None were MOAHs (Mothers of All Habaneros) by the Cru's (NYT Crossword Forum people) standards.

Trip Payne said this was the very best puzzle book he has ever worked. I would very much have to agree with him, but would add the adjective "challenging" to book. Probably the most entertaining books were Merl Reagle's books.

All in all I would say that these puzzles are all in the difficulty level of the upper third of Saturday NYT's.

But that is not the big thing about this book.

The BIG thing is the phenomenal cluing the likes of which I have rarely seen. EVERY puzzle chock full of mind bending misleads and jolts of the cerebral electrodes. But you do not get mad because every puzzle is doable, and after you look at the finished grid you say, "HEY, I know all these common words and phrases." But when you look at the clue list BEFORE solving the puzzle you go into instant puzzle-shock and say "DUH!".

If you appreciate Barry Haldiman's Cru habaneros as regular NYT Crossword Forum Tuesday fare, you MUST buy this book. Period!

"Every major sales answer you need to know is in this book." -From the Book.

Take a look inside this book and you'll see that this is no ordinary how-to guide. This guy is brilliant in that he has went off the beaten path of how a book is supposed to look. The book is approximately 5x8 in size, and is covered in red fabric and comes with a handy built in bookmark. I love the use of color throughout the book. The author has chosen to color important words and phrases throughout, to make them stand out in your mind, and there are some tasteful illustrations that enhance the messages conveyed.

I know so many sales people who don't like to read. If that's you, well, then you'll LOVE this book because not only is it an easy book to read and understand, but the style is totally fun. You may even forget you're reading and all the while you'll come away with a new perspective on selling!

I was hooked and knew I had to have this book from the beginning. I love the unconventional style of the book. Now, besides the great job he did on the look of the book, there is some extremely good information contained within these red walls. 99.5 real world answers are contained within 6.5 chapters. Loads of great advice on things like setting goals and How to do your best every day, prospecting, and even how to write a thank you note.

This book has more than earned it's spot on my bookshelf!

Don't get me wrong, I really think Gitomer is a great writer and speaker but this book just rehashes topics he has already covered in his two best sales books, the Little Red Book of Sales and The Sales Bible. I love his "easy to read / no BS " style. Unfortunately for the reader there is nothing new here. Purchase the two aforementioned books and study those. I agree with another reviewer that each book he comes out with is not as potent as his first books. But I don't blame him for writing these rehashed versions of his most popular books... He is making lots of $$$! BTW... I have been in executive management for 15 years and have earned my MBA.

5 out of 5 stars Little Read Book of Sales Answers, by Gitomer.......2007-05-27

Understanding sales, whether you have done it all your life as I have (since I was 15 I'm 55) or you are just starting is crucial to your success. As the most successful salesperson in every company and position that I have had - I was amazed at what I learned from this to make me even more successful. Read the book, along with all his other books, find a commission job, as risky as it seems, (or start your own sales company) and there will be no limit to your income. The limit will come from you on your terms.
