Book Description

A lively exploration of the Planet of the Apes films as racial allegory.

In 1968, Planet of the Apes became a megahit movie both in the US and abroad, inspiring four film sequels, two TV series, several comic series, and hundreds of millions of dollars in worldwide merchandising. The Apes films confronted some of the most controversial issues of the time, including Vietnam and the Black Power movement, all the while remaining crowd pleasing box office hits.

Eric Greene uses rare photographs, transcripts, and extensive interviews with the writers, directors, actors, and producers to read the Apes saga as a profoundly American myth. Greene also looks at the attempts of filmmakers like Oliver Stone and James Cameron to remake the myth for the 90s. This enjoyable and meticulous book gives the reader an insider's look at the complex relationships between race, politics and popular culture in America.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful Discussion.......2007-03-22

Eric Greene's book is a thoughtful discussion of the ideas present in the Apes movies. Even if the makers might deny that they intended them to be social commentary, the Apes movies certainly inspire a review of the social scene in the 1960's from which these movies sprang forth.

By comparison, how something like Star Wars can be praised as mythology and the Apes movies ignored is beyond me.

5 out of 5 stars The "Sacred Scroll" for serious Ape-o-philes!.......2006-07-20

I can count on the fingers (and fully-opposable thumb) of one hand the number of books that have impressed, entertained, and inspired me as much as this one.

It doesn't hurt that I grew up as a hardcore Ape-o-phile. Still, had "Planet of the Apes as American Myth" been a mere nostalgic retrospective, it would not have riveted me as it did. Something strange happened as I read Greene's lucid, insightful and cogent commentary. I came to understand, finally, just why the Apes series and the world it evoked had, during my pre-teen and teen years, intrigued me on so many levels at once...and why the series' admittedly outlandish sci-fi premise always had to it the ring of truth. Reading this book, I felt vindicated. It was as if the author said, "You were right all along, Paul. These films really DID matter -- and here's why."

Like the final scene in the original 1968 film, Greene's book forces you to look back at all that preceded it (in this case, the POTA films & TV series) in an entirely new light. For Apes fans this is, quite simply, a MUST-READ.

(Paul McComas is the author of UNPLUGGED, TWENTY QUESTIONS, and the upcoming comedic coming-of-age novel PLANET OF THE DATES.)

5 out of 5 stars Not just about race..........2005-03-10

The Ape movies were not just mirrors to show us our racial problems but also to show solutions to them. But it wasn't just about race, but also about foreign affairs such as the Cold War and the Vietnam Conflict, religion vs. science, nature vs. nurture, the fears of a nuclear holocaust, even our treatment of animals and how we treat women.
The book really helped me to understand the movies with a detailed background about the times in which the movies were created. The book also has a touch of humor even while explaining about what the films were trying to say or show. Sometimes without even knowing it.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing, intelligent, and eminently readable.......2005-02-16

Greene also does the text commentary on the 35th anniversary DVD of the original PLANET OF THE APES movie, and you can see why he was chosen. His deep insights into that film, and the ones that follow, are an absolute joy to read. If only the producers of the dismal remake of PLANET OF THE APES had read Green's book, they'd perhaps have understood how deeply symbolic and profound the original was. Although this is a scholarly work, it is also just a whole heck of a lot of fun. Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Planet of the Apes as an American "Animal Farm?".......2004-10-07

As far back as Aesop, the creative community has realized that talking animals can be especially effective surrogates for making social commentary. This book is an extensive treatment of this issue and therefore is especially for those interested in the mythical and social aspects of the Planet of the Apes series. Needless to say, if you want to know more about the movies as movies or you're interested in an apes price guide, you should probably look elsewhere. However, those looking here will not be disappointed with Greene's spot on ability to weave social analysis from the various naunces of the apes movies.
From 1968 to 1975 the apes series produced five movies and two separate television series. This is a very prodigious production rate commensurate with the series' ability to key into the American psyche. Much like the Simpsons today, the apes series gave its writing staff a chance to touch on issues like the war in Vietnam and race relations from an artistically safe vantage point. Like our fast food the Planet of the Apes series was a uniquely American foray into the land of Aesop. It was, perhaps our American "Animal Farm."

    Book Description

This book is the first complete study in English of the work of the best-known Japanese composer of the twentieth century. It is also the first book in this language to offer an in-depth analysis of his music. T^D-oru Takemitsu's works are increasingly popular with Western audiences and Peter Burt attempts for the first time to shed light on the hitherto rather secretive world of his working methods, as well as place him in context as heir to the rich tradition of Japanese composition in the twentieth century.

    Book Description

In these writings, available here in English for the first time, the distinguished Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu reflects on his contemporaries, including John Cage, Olivier Messiaen, and Merce Cunningham; on nature, which has profoundly influenced his composition; on film and painting; on relationships between East and West; on traditional Japanese music; and on his own compositions.

3 out of 5 stars A couple of possibly useful essays, a whole lot of filler.......2006-04-11

CONFRONTING SILENCE is a slim (143-page plus index) collection of writings by the Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu published in 1995, a year before his untimely death. Translated and edited by Yoshiko Kakudo and Glenn Glasgow, the contents come from varied sources, some magazine or newspaper articles, others lectures to university crowds. The advertised foreward by Seiji Ozawa is a single paragraph saying basically "I am happy you can read my friend's work." A few of the writings here are useful towards appreciating Takemitsu's work and aesthetic, but I found that most were of limited value.

"Notes on November Steps" is a series of reminisces on the 1967 composition and premier of Takemitsu's great piece combining the Western orchestra with two Japanese instruments, the biwa and shakuhachi. The description of the challenges Takemitsu faced in combining these two traditions, and of the tension between the modern composer and conservative orchestra are highly interesting and make for greater appreciation of the piece. "Dream and Number" is an exegesis of his several of his pieces, most notably "A Flock Descends into the Pentagonal Garden", telling of inspirations from dreams and the abundance of reference to the number five. It is lavishly illustrated with score samples. It is the only substantial musicological writing here. "Sound of East, Sound of West" consists of musings on the special traits of certain indigenous musical traditions of the world, and contains some worthwhile thoughts on Japanese music and their exportability.

Most of the pieces, however, are fluff. An obituary essay in memory of Feldman, Nono, and Messiaen is just a simple explanation of who they were and when they died, without any clear information on how they influenced Takemitsu's music. Some of the content is repeated, for how many times do we need the same description of the biwa? "Nature and Music", apparently extracts from Takemitsu's diary, are written in an exceedingly hermetic style that doesn't communicate well with the reader. All in all, I'd recommend this book only to committed fans of Takemitsu, and flipping through it in a university library may be the best course of action. If you are looking for a book-length treatment of Takemitsu and his work, Peter Burt's THE MUSIC OF TORU TAKEMITSU (Cambridge University Press, 2001) is the thing to get.

    5 out of 5 stars Deeply profound,almost haiku-like in brevity,gentleness.......2000-05-11

"But I think of time as circular and continuity as a constant changing state." So said Toru Takemitsu in this modest yet profoundly readable book. He has been writing on his music, all of it where his creativity has touched all genres including a sizable repertoire in film, since 1960s. This work here is haiku-like excerpts, But for Takemitsu that's all we really need for he ascends right to the center of where creativity occurs squarely on point. If thinking on music knows some geometric graphic, the shortest distance between two points it is here. He is a deep thinker, when his November Steps for Orcehstra was performed by The New York Philharmonic,he wandered the streets around his hotel in Manhatten trying to get the experience inside him, to wind it down in a way.Silence is what nature has given us, we then as creators fill it, or structure sounds around silence. He keeps his own culture rich in complexity always in the forefront of his thinking. He compares for instance the simultaneous complexity of the Japanese instruments, the shakuhachi flute and the biwa, like a lute, and the overwhelming experience when he first heard a Western size orchestra in The United States. He has written for both in an interesting way, trying to forge an East-West amalgam, knowing the conceptual limitations of both genres.Takemitsu's music comes from nature, he has essays here on water, trees, silence and gardens, and he equates the durational part of his orchestral work as like a quiet private walk in a garden. If you ever heard his music it is rich in textural display, colourful knowing full the uniqueness of timbre from any instrument. Frequently his orchestral work features an instrument to function almost like a concerto. Dreams are also important to him as his work" A Flock Descends into the Pentagonal Garden" where his orchestral thinking lends itself quite well toward a timeless canvas of sound, sputtering and slowly transforming from colour to colour in the orchestra. You rarely feel the barline pulse in his music. On his film work,he was the first to purely utilize simple percussive sounds as wind-chimes,maraca and bamboo chimes as accompaniment to film, which is now the lingua franca of the film composers repertoire. There is nothing like the placement of a sharp maraca pulse with silences to create a sense of tension and danger. He won an award for his score to Kurosawa's "Ran" a deeply violent film with literally hundreds of extras fighting battles of early aristocratic agrarian struggles. There are also sensitive portraits of other artists as John Cage, who had helped Takemitsu find a place in the West. There was still animosity against the Japanese that went well into the Sixties from the Second World War in artistic circles as well. So we hardly knew of this rich repertoire of orchestral work out of Japan. His reflections extended to a music festival in Honolulu where the visual artist Jasper Johns was in attendance and recalls his briefcase had only a deck of cards, a carton of cigarettes, a mystery novel and a sketchpad. The sketchpad was used for a work the Johns completed while there renting a studio. The "Watchmen" was the painting left behind.

3 out of 5 stars Fair but it could have been so much more!.......2001-11-14

Ok, I love the beginning and for those who've read the "ghoul book" you'll recall the fine Malkavian doctor and his ghoul assistant as they now share their research into the "thin blooded" vampires and these strange new creatures some of them can parent. I also loved the insights from the thin-blooded themselves. However, I still had some questions such as when these 15th generation vampires first appeared and any connections to other ancients arising. Also I felt that the "story-like" sections were merely repeated in later sections and that the insights on character creation is not as strong as in other books. Also why would 13th or 14th gen kindred even be trying to make others? And why are 15th gen so interested in sex when supposedly other gens aren't? How much of this is propaganda? I know, I'm a stroyteller, I can make this stuff up, but I had hoped for better guidelines.

4 out of 5 stars The Final Nights Approach.......2001-08-18

In theory, this book is a powerful tool for any Storyteller with a mature troope. The thin-blooded are a force to be reckoned with; their power is small but they numbers are unimaginable. Are these the Final Nights? The Book of Nod would seem to suggest so (according to this book), but what of it? There are Cainites so weak that the Sun no longer burns their flesh, vampires so far removed that they can bear breathing children.

In this book are excellent rules for designing a discipline (or powers within a discipline), a subject rarely touched before. I have odd feelings about the subject of Dhampirs, the children of the thin-blooded, but this book portrays them marvelously. So much thought is put into these systems that I can hardly restrain my chronicles from overusing thin-blooded plots.

Why just four stars then? That draws upon the overall readability. The grammar style of the authors is different from that of most other White Wolf publications. It's choppier and harder to read. Entire pages are written like notebooks, cutting up their readability factor. And the notes are, in some ways, no less than cheasy. The authors have reached out on a limb, which subsequently broke.

Still, don't be discouraged. The thin-blooded are a wonderful plot point and excellent chronicle focus. They have fatal flaws counterbalanced by powerful assets that strike fear into the hearts of Elders. The Final Nights are here, embrace them.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but Dhampirs...?.......2000-12-18

I really liked the idea of "thin blooded" vampires, for two reasons. One, they are weaker (but they can shine) than everyone else. This is good for me from a StoryTellers point of view. One thing I can't stand is power-gamers. Since the Thin-blooded can make thier own disiplines, this gives me (the story teller) a measure of control, but can make them good characters. Second with Thin-blooded ones, they ARE weaker, so that makes them a challenge to play, and I love a challenge.

Also this supplement was necesary. With some players being 13th Generation Vampire make their own childer, and this goes into detail on the information of 14th and 15th Gen Vampires.

Finally Dhampirs... If I understand how Dhampirs work, they are essentally masterless ghouls, right? Now I'll admit that I don't know much about Ghouls, but that seems a bit weak for the childREN of Vampires.

4 out of 5 stars Know what you're getting into........2000-11-22

This isn't the book for the gamers who want a supplement to contain more bitchin' powers and the (apparent) answers to some of the great mysteries of the game setting.

Instead, this is jumping in at the deep end of the desperation, confusion and madness of the end of the world, as the vampires see it. Fourteen and fifteen generations later, the power of Caine's curse is wearing off, and vampires are being created who are more human and less vampire than those who have come before them. They aren't masters of the night, they aren't capable of living as humans. They're pathetic creatures living in fear and ignorance, not even knowing that there's an entire World of Darkness ready to do them in for reasons they won't live long enough to learn.

Instead of the high Gothic opera of most "Vampire: The Masquerade" games, "Time of the Thin Blood" is a squalid, brutish and brutal game supplement that stinks of fear sweat and, along the way, gives reasons for the rest of the vampires to be sweating blood along with the thin-blooded.

And, of course, there are some bitchin' new powers: The thin-blooded can't do much of what more potent vampires can do, but they can do some things that none of their elders (and betters) can do, including make babies. The rules for these half-human/half-vampire dhampires are also given. Would a player want to play one? Not most players in most games. But "Time of the Thin Blood" works best on its own (with the core rulebook, of course) or for the rare player who doesn't want to be a Lestat-like master of the night.

And there's also some answers to the big questions, or at least an apparent answer that poses some bigger questions. The game master-only section at the back tells a brief tale: Something very old and very nasty wakes up in India, the supernatural world rises against it, and the world of VtM changes, getting more desperate and somewhat less populated ...

This is the stuff of nightmares and urban legends. Good stuff. Pick it up.

3 out of 5 stars Not too shabby.......1999-12-21

The part about 14th and 15th Gen Vamps was almost as interesting as it's supposed author although the "brief" format is a bit unwieldy. Although I can't actually see anyone wanting to PLAY a 14/15 gen vamp the data is good resource material. If you overlook the GLARING contrast with what is written in the KoE Companion (RE: Ravnos) the last section is VERY interesting and provides a nice bit of backdrop for any campaign.

                    Book Description

This is the classic book on war as we know it. During his long life, Basil H. Liddell Hart was considered one of the world's foremost military thinkers--a man generally regarded as the "Clausewitz of the 20th century."

Liddell Hart stressed movement, flexibilty, surprise. He saw that in most military campaigns dislocation of the enemy's psychological and physical balance is prelude to victory. This dislocation results from a strategic indirect approach. Reflect for a moment on the results of direct confrontation (trench war in WW I) versus indirect dislocation (Blitzkreig in WW II). Liddell Hart is also tonic for business and political planning: just change the vocabulary and his concepts fit.

"The most important book by one of the outstanding military authorities of our time." (Library Journal)

3 out of 5 stars Not historically objective.......2007-09-07

Liddell-Hart's magnum-opus, "Strategy", purports to demonstrate that "throughout the ages, effective results in war have rarely been attained unless the approach has had such indirectness as to ensure the opponent's unreadiness to meet it." In short, his book is predicated on the notions that an indirect strategy is the only strategy which succeeds, and that history shows this to be the truth.
"Strategy" is impressive in its scope, and it contains much of value for the student of military history; however its content is not objective. Liddell-Hart interprets events to support his thesis regarding the superiority of the indirect approach. One instance of such interpretation is his discussion of the Allied landings at Normandy in June 1944. Liddell Hart correctly describes the theater strategic decision to land in the Normandy region vice landing in the vicinity of Pas de Calais as a variation of the indirect approach, in which allied planners demonstrated "an inclination to avoid the most strongly defended approach" (p 296), but he fails to address the fact that an invasion of Northwest Europe to defeat Nazi German was in itself a strategic direct approach. The Allies' Mediterranean strategy had succeeded against Axis forces and protected British access to the Suez Canal; however it did not strike a decisive blow. Rather, it contracted German forces into a denser defensive posture on the mainland of Europe, requiring a direct assault on the defenses of the Atlantic Wall in preparation for the drive into Germany.
Clausewitz wrote, "if...some historical event is being presented in order to demonstrate a general truth, care must be taken that every aspect bearing on the truth at issue is fully and circumstantially developed." Liddell Hart sought to raise the efficacy of the indirect approach to the status of a general truth, but in the process of doing so failed to consider all aspects of his argument. This failure leaves his work ultimately unconvincing and thereby demonstrates the utility of Clausewitz's admonition to be thorough when using history to illustrate theory.

5 out of 5 stars The Optimistic Jew.......2007-08-31

Liddell Hart was considered one of the world's foremost military thinkers of the 20th century. I consider him to be the fundamental thinker for policy making. His clear definitions of the differences between ideology, policy, grand-strategy, strategy, tactics and operations must be the methodological framework for national policy. His military thinking had great influence on the Israeli army. He was a champion of indirect dislocation and condemned direct confrontation. This along with his concepts of the "strategy of the indirect approach" and a "policy of limited aims" served Israel well in its early years. Rejection of this philosophy following the Six Day War has caused untold mischief to the Zionist Enterprise -- a point I make over and over again in my own book "The Optimistic Jew: a Positive Vision for the Jewish People in the 21st Century". I would make Liddell Hart's book required reading for anyone who presumes to make Jewish policy of any sort.

5 out of 5 stars An Early Examination of the Operative Sphere of War.......2006-11-20

B.H. Liddell-Hart was an excellent historian and able strategist, but his greatest strength here is in illuminating the operative sphere of war (labeled "strategic" sphere here, as opposed to the strategic and tactical spheres, which Hart labels grand strategy and tactics, respectively) and its role in modern maneuver warfare (which seeks "a better peace" rather than destructive war.) In this, Liddell-Hart out paces Clausewitz by several hundred meters, and, indeed, revises Clausewitz's much-quoted axion, "In times of peace, prepare for war." Liddell-Hart understood that, in an age of nuclear arms and shifting alliances that lead to global conflicts, the better axiom is "In times of peace, KNOW war." Preparation is liable to be seen as preemption.

Strangely, the historic examples used in this text do not represent Hart's best work. An able narrator, Hart usually weaves various operations into thoroughly readable histories. Not so here, where his work is a tad dry. For a better look at Hart's skills, read "Scipio Africanus: Greater Than Napoleon" or "Great Captains Unveiled." The book is strongest in he beginning and in the appendices, where Hart develops his theories.

That said, the work itself is definitive. If modern strategists successfully applied half of the thoughts outlined here, then the western world would find itself prosecuting much more successful wars as well as winning a much more prudent peace.

Several forces are transforming the structure and content of the marketing profession. Marketers are seeing increasingly faster changes in the marketplace and are barraged with an ever increasing amount of information. While many view traditional marketing as art and some view it as science, the new marketing increasingly looks like engineering. This textbook, combined with a comprehensive collection of 26 leading-edge software models provides the student with the know-how and tools to collect the right information and perform analysis to make better marketing plans, better product designs, and better decisions.

Our purpose in writing this book is to help educate and train a new generation of marketing managers. We aim to train marketing engineers to translate concepts into context-specific operational decisions and actions using analytical, quantitative, and computer modeling techniques. We link theory to practice and practice to theory.

The content and tutorials of this text are useful. They will familiarize the reader with the types of tools and methods that are used to support marketing decisions.

In many cases the inputs of the analysis exercises are given and too subjective to duplicate the results with alternate data. However, the processes help organize your thoughts.

I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to develop a general understanding of marketing analytics.

I also found the software a bit buggy but usable none the less.

I bought this book for an advanced marketing class in my MBA program. The authors explain in detail the elementary topics which are covered in basic marketing class. For e.g. they talk in detail about segmentation, but they fail to explain thoroughly clustering and factor analysis. The tutorial also lacks depth and does not interpret the numbers.

                        Book Description

Newly revised and updated, The Rise of Modern Business compares and analyzes the development of business and business institutions in Great Britain, the United States, Japan, and, to a lesser extent, Germany from the preindustrial era to the present, with emphasis on the twentieth century. Because the evolution of business has been profoundly influenced by its environment, this study pays close attention to connections between business development and political, social, and cultural changes. It also offers an insightful argument on similarities and differences in global business development: the similarities result from the technological and economic imperatives of industrialization, and the differences result from the decisive influence of the national environments—laws, politics, social norms, and culture—within which businesses operate.

This edition of The Rise of Modern Business further highlights the diversity and complexity of business developments by examining both manufacturing and nonmanufacturing firms, exploring the development of small firms in addition to big businesses, and weighing the importance of labor and government for business development in all four nations discussed.

                          Book Description

Four months before Pearl Harbor, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt met in secret aboard a ship in a secluded Newfoundland harbor. This was the first summit conference of World War II.

Although it would soon be overshadowed by the events to come, the 1941 summit at Placentia Bay produced dramatic results. It confirmed the policy of material aid for Britain and sanctioned the "Atlantic Charter." It also laid the groundwork for the three-way alliance that would bring about the destruction of the Axis powers. "I am sure that I have established warm and deep personal relations with our great friend," Churchill cabled his cabinet from Argentia Harbor.

In this revised edition of his classic study, which won the Society of American Historians Parkman Prize, historian Theodore Wilson has expanded and updated the narrative. Drawing upon a wealth of primary sources made available since the first edition (British official records, declassified material in the Roosevelt Library and National Archives, along with the papers of such British and American officials as George C. Marshall, Adolf Berle, Orlando Ward, Sir Alexander Cadogan, and Lord Halifax), he has added nearly 40% new material. The First Summit is now totally grounded in archival research and authoritative in a way that the original version could not be.

Wilson carefully analyzes the events of August 1941 and concludes that President Roosevelt was not totally in control. As the country lurched from crisis to crisis, bureaucratic politics and organizational dynamics were far more influential than FDR in determining the evolution of U.S. strategy, U. S. policy toward Japan, Anglo-American economic relations, and the efforts to mobilize for war.

Wilson also recaptures the drama and color of the shipboard discussions-from Roosevelt's bizarre working methods to Churchill's choice of entertainment in the evenings. The resulting narrative bristles with detail and puts forth a rounded, confident argument establishing the meeting at Argentia as a landmark in the history of war diplomacy.
