    Book Description

McKenna's second collection of in-depth interviews with some of the 20th century's most brilliant cultural icons. Kristine McKenna's work as a journalist began in the late-1970s, when she covered the Los Angeles punk scene for various domestic and international publications. During the '80s and '90s she wrote art, film and music criticism, and profiled directors, musicians and visual artists for a variety of publications including Artforum, Playboy, Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times and New York Rocker.

Talk to Her is McKenna's second collection (the first was 1999's Book of Changes) of favorite interviews culled from McKenna's files, and the book reveal's McKenna's highly intimate technique as an interviewer. That she manages to get such candor out of her subjects is remarkable.

The stunning list of interview subjects includes: Filmmaker Robert Altman; Jackie Onassis's cousin Edie Beale; punk rocker and poet Exene Cervenka; the musician Elvis Costello; surf guitar legend Dick Dale; the postmodern critic Jacques Derrida; Beat poet Allen Ginsberg; Television's Richard Hell and Tom Verlaine; art curator Walter Hopps; Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde; country music legend Rickie Lee Jones; the Sex Pistols' John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten); singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell; the Rabbi Jonathan Omer-Man; punk rock legend Joey Ramone; New York rock legend Lou Reed; the actress Eva Marie Saint; and the recently-departed Joe Strummer of the Clash. Also included are brief oral histories of Andy Warhol and Orson Welles.

Talk to Her also includes portraits of each interview subject by some of the best cartoonists in the world, including Daniel Clowes, Charles Burns, Phoebe Glockner, Tony Millionaire, Jeff Wong and others.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Fun, Important Book.......2005-09-09

A celebrity with the chance to be interviewed by Kristine McKenna is one mighty lucky celebrity indeed. Ms. McKenna refuses to delve into the tabloid gossip of their lives, focusing instead on drawing out their insights about the human condition. She wants these people to explain inspiration, fame, ambition, enchantment... and by reading her subjects well, and expertly pacing her lines of inquiry, she almost always succeeds. A magnificent achievement, given how jaded and suspicious most of her interviewees tend (at least initially) to be. Ms. McKenna is a far more accomplished and insightful interviewer than Fresh Air's Terry Gross, in my opinion.

Randy Gilbert was privileged to interview Rosalind Gardner on The Inside Success Show.

The topic for today's interview is "affiliate marketing on the internet" which has become a very steady income for home-based internet businesses. Some people say there isn't any money selling other people's things so it's not worth your time.

This special guest says those people are crazy and a bunch of negative thinking people. She says, there's plenty of money to be made as an affiliate and holds herself out as the perfect example, because she regularly earns 30 to 50 thousand dollars per month. "If I can do it, then I figure just about anyone who knows how to read and tie their shoes can do it."

If you're looking for a way to work at home, either full time or part-time, and have fun promoting products that you believe in, then this is a great interview for you to read.

                  * What is a Super Affiliate and 3 reasons why you want to be one
                  * How you can start your business for less than $100
                  * Why it's important to pick products that interest you and that you can be passionate about

4 out of 5 stars Creative, but too unrealistic.......2007-09-25

Traps described in this books are much more interesting than standard ones, but absolutely unrealistic. Can you believe that somebody will use a teleporter for... throwing a victim some yards up, in order to drop him on the spike? If I'll make a teleporter trap, it will be MUCH more effective.

But if your players are not interested in realism of your D&D world - this book will be excellent for you. Game mechanics described in it is very interesting.

5 out of 5 stars For when you want to kill an adventuring party.......2007-09-18

The original Grimtooth's Traps books were loaded with devilishly inventive and horribly deadly traps, really only suitable for a DM who wanted to kill an adventuring party. This update to those classic traps preserves the original creativity, while giving a DM Search and Disable Device DCs for each trap, giving PCs a _slightly_ increased chance of survival. However, what really makes this book shine is the detailed descriptions of each and every trap. The perfect cure for everyone who's tired of the standard: "Trap: CR 2, poison darts, trip wire trigger, Search DC 12, Disable DC 15." I highly recommend this book to all D&D players; whether or not you use the traps in the book, they're simply fun to read.

4 out of 5 stars An archive of the Grimtooth trap series.......2007-09-15

This tome is a compilation of the Best of the Grimtooth's trap series. The majority of these traps will kill off a character. The last chapters of the book contain adventures, Traps Bizaar and the Dungeon of Doom, which are cool but again will kill off a party...

                      4 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2006-01-20

Short and sweet.... It has everything I liked about the original books and is in a format that I can use to easily torture my players. Good stuff!

                      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential.......2006-01-08

Short review time, this is probably the only off-brand book that I would consider essential to any half-decent DM. For anyone who complains that D&D is far too combat oriented, put a couple of the more vicious traps from this book in their path. Granted, a lot of them have a very cheesy 2nd edition feel to them, but even those provide inspiration for your own traps, and 90% of this book is PURE genius.

5 out of 5 stars Hits the mark--and helps you hit it, too.......2007-07-28

Wilma Davidson's _Business Writing: What Works, What Won't_ is that rare book that fully addresses its title's premise. This book will have you writing more effective business correspondence and documents right away.

As a freelance commercial writer, my work depends on skillfully communicating on point. This book shows how to do just that. Davidson minces no words, either. She finds the current state of business writing deplorable, filled with pointless buzzwords, passive voice, data overload, and too much pomposity. She gears her book to addressing those major problems and does so effortlessly.

                      You'll learn how to

                      * Restructure documents for quick reading
                      * Tighten sentences and paragraphs by eliminating extraneous words and phrases
                      * Use "real English" instead of business buzzwords that hinder communication
                      * Move from dull, passive voice to a more natural active voice that holds readers' attention
                      * And much more.

Best of all, the author provides numerous outstanding examples of the distinctions between poorly written documents and their more professionally written counterparts. The book includes quizzes, asking readers to fix broken paragraphs and sentences. Unlike some other books that test readers, Davidson provides her suggestions for those fixes so the reader isn't left to wonder what the repair might be. Her section on switching from passive to active voice may be one of the best I've ever read, offering illustrations and clever examples that help beginning business writers grasp the concept.

Considering I work as a writer and have read on the topic widely, it's a rarity for me to pick up a book on the subject of writing and say, "What a superlative book!" _Business Writing; What Works, What Won't_ is just that, and I recommend it without hesitation. If business writers read this book and put its recommendation into practice, we'll have a whole lot less of "It is suggested that we leverage a paradigm shift" and more of "Let's try a new direction."

4 out of 5 stars The Book Does Work.......2006-12-01

Business Writing: What Works, What Won't is a business writing book that indeed does work very well. The author gets right to the point and gives just the right amount of information on most business writing aspects, with a terrific section on e-mail and letters. She uses humor throughout the guide, making an otherwise dry subject more entertaining. More importantly, the book is full of useful examples that illustrate the rule, technique, or principle discussed. For example, she doesn't just urge the reader to use the active voice, she includes almost a dozen examples of the proper way to use the active voice (and avoid the passive voice). Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars My Students Love it Too!.......2003-04-21

The open, inviting and easy-to-read format was the first thing that attracted me to Wilma Davidson's book. Next was the content. She covers all the major areas that most people need to work on to become more effective and efficient writers. Her book provides solid, practical information right up front, with a of easy-to-understand examples. Last but not least is the endorsement given in the forward by Janet Emig, who revolutionized the approach to writing being taught in school systems around the world today. I use Business Writing, What Works What Wont to supplement the principles and techniques I teach in my writing workshop, which is aimed at professionals in technical fields, and they love it too, saying it is a great help and excellent resource.

4 out of 5 stars What Works "Works"!.......2000-03-31

With business people today spending an average of 30% of their work time writing, this book offers simple techniques (along with practice situations) to make your message more clear and powerful. This book was helpful to me because most writing skills taught in business schools today are not comparable to the writing demands faced by these same students in the business world. This book also helped me discard my academic view that writing features lengthy paragraphs and big words and taught me to use concise paragraphs to get the job done. Look at me now! I'm a lawyer, and after readiing this book all I have to say is just that it's great. The legal forms it has, do and don't forms, are very useful. I strongly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars The only contract reference you'll ever need.......2000-09-04

I am a recovering lawyer. That said, as an entrepreneur, my partners always look to me to keep an eye on things legal, and this book has been my greatest ally in the effort.

The author and I share the same views about contracts: they should be clear; as brief as possible (without leaving out anything necessary); and in plain English.

This book will be a tremendous resource for anyone preparing a contract and for anyone reviewing a contract. You will find a wealth of hints, including plenty of examples of BOTH good and bad contracts and clauses, in addition to the fine commentary on the many types of contracts. In addition, the organization is very useful, with chapters focusing on the major types of contract businesspeople are likely to see. The chapters covering general subjects (including "Clauses. . .Standard and Dangerous") are good guidance for lawyers and excellent introductions for non-lawyers.

My battered copy saw so much action I had it rebound!
