Book Description

Movie Collectibles is a comprehensive guide to the large and ever-popular area of collecting movie memorabilia. Concentrating on posters, the book is divided into genres such as Film Noir, Disney & Other Animation, Movie Stars, James Bond, and Star Wars, and following the progression of cinema from the early days of silent film through to modern re-releases of old classics. There is also a section on other memorabilia including press kits, film books, props, and programs. The emphasis is on collectibles that are affordable to the everyday collector. Advice on how to care for and restore a collection is also provided.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars SHOULD BE CALLED MILLER'S MOVIE POSTERS.......2007-06-11

As usual, a typical book that focuses on just movie posters and throws small scraps to the rest of movie memorabilia material. Nothing new here.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of the fine art of collecting movie posters.......2002-05-27

Lavishly illustrated guide to movie posters and associated film collectibles. Informative text. This book is valuable to collectors at all levels, from "I just really like this movie," to those who collect rare items as well.

Information about caring for and restoring posters is also helpful to all who care to preserve their posters effectively.

Collectors and film lovers alike will find this book a great addition to their library.

Fans of the PBS series Antiques Roadshow will be glad to see more info from one of their regular appraisers, Rudy Franchi.

5 out of 5 stars A fabulous and stunning debut by the Franchis..........2002-05-18

Rudy and Barbara Franchi have created, in my mind, the most definitive primer to date that deserves a place in the PERMANENT library of EVERY movie poster or memorabilia fan in the world.

"Miller's Movie Collectibles" packs a wallop - especially for bookish geeks like yours truly who demand a ton of poster and memorabilia images - AS WELL AS fluid prose/text/history laid out beautifully on EVERY page.

Clocking in at 144 pages and a whopping 36 chapters, this sturdy volume is hands down, a spectacular compendium of content and images, coherent and accessible, laid out with a sophisticated, contemporary design aesthetic that makes every page a work of art (e.g., as in the use of faint silhouettes on every page, in different colors, mirroring movie icons and other related images).

Lavishly printed on heavy paper stock "Movie Collectibles" is an photo- and text-intensive product of the likes rarely seen. It attempts - and succeeds - to cover every slice of our hobby.

Color illustrations decorate every page, accompanied by disarmingly breezy and informative text by this husband and wife team (the former a charter popular arts historian featured weekly on PBS' most-watched television series, "The Antiques Roadshow").

There's a timeless quality to this product that makes one wonder if a second edition will ever be necessary.

Think of the most desired movie posters in the world, from "The Mummy" to "Tiffany's" to "King Kong." Think of the great cult favorites and hyper-popular genres, from James Bond to Hitchcock to sci-fi to film noir to Disney to foreign classics to horror to musicals to silents. Think of the most obscure, the bizarre, the provocative.

You'll find them here, in glorious color, jammed with easy-to-read prose that every collector or dealer, from novice to advanced, will gobble up like inmates ending a hunger strike.

It gets better.

Rather than sticking with silent and vintage films and dismissing post-1960 products, "Movie Collectibles" devotes special chapters for each decade, from the 60s to the 80s.

You wanna know more about special illustrators, from Vargas to Brown to Bass to Peak to Frazetta? Yeah, they get their own chapter.

What about repros, re-issues, pressbooks, programs, stills, slides, lobby cards, sheet music, film books, autographs, promos, and props?

What about signed contracts, Academy Awards and other ultra-rare items that we see, oh, once every solar eclipse over the continental USA? What about restoration services, types, styles, what's bad, what's good, etc.?

Taken as a whole, Franchi's inaugural edition of "Miller's Movie Collectibles" represents a stunning debut, an opulently produced yet slim enough volume to carry in your satchel. The authors have a way with prose that is unlike most other books about movie posters and related collectibles. And its contents are akin to what you'd find in a product costing much more.

"Miller's Movie Collectibles" is a keeper.

The Secret College lurks in the dark corners of every civilized nation. It's goal: spread the twisted art of necromancy. Now the Secret College of Necromancy is revealed in this comprehensive sourcebook by 2nd edition AD&D designer David "Zeb" Cook and former Dragon Magazine editor Wolfgang Baur. Covering the full range of necromancy from spells and arcane grimoires to creatures and history, this 96-page book can invigorate any campaign. Even better, Secret College of Necromancy offers two new core classes and never-before-seen powers for player character wizards and sorcerers willing to walk the path of shadows.

                        Customer Reviews:

                        5 out of 5 stars A very good book!.......2003-12-07

This little book is very, very good. It is quite fun to read, and packs lots of information on necromancy, tools, rituals and related disciplines (graverobbing, embalming, etc). It also has some background on the historical evolution of necromancy in a fantasy setting, which is decent enough to be used.

Basically, it begins by introducing two new core classes, the necromancer and the death knight. The authors do advice at the beggining of the book that these classes are very "potent" and meant to be used for villanous NPCs, however, i've found them quite usable for evil PCs.

The Necromancer is quite different from your typical PHB wizard specialized in necromancy. It is a great class, with a spell list that includes arcane and divine magic, some new spells that make it easier to create undeads and constructs -blood, bone or rot golems-, and access to some extremely cool undead familiars. It does seem a little overpowered, but nothing a good DM couldn't handle, and i let my players have access to it as is.

The Death Knight is somewhat similar to the DMG's Black Guard prestige class, but as a core class. It has access to some arcane magic (up to 4th level spells from its own list), and as a class is very similar to the paladin (you could actually consider this class sort of an "antipaladin"). They also get access to an "unholy steed" in 4th level (a ghost horse -below 10th level-, or a nightmare -10th level or above-).

Both classes can become undead at 20th level, the necromancer becomes a lich (adopting the lich template), while the death knight adopts the undead template (this, i won't allow for PCs but i will definitely allow for NPCs).

Next comes the new skills and feats, as well as the new spells.
The skills are mostly new craft and knowledge skills, all related to necromancy, and a new proffesion: graverobber. They all seem appropriate. The feats, well, let's just say i didn't allow some of them ("coup de grace" and "improved mortal curse") to maintain game balance, and i'd recommend you only allow them after carefull consideration.

The new spells are mostly well balanced, but there are a few spells that really should've been playtested more throughly, and you should read them carefully before allowing them in your game, perhaps after adjusting their level.

After a short description of various necromantic items, comes a very good essay on graverobbing and undead creation, which provides really needed depth and information extremely valuable for PC or NPC necromancers as well as DMs running these classes.

Then comes a short description of undead feats, describing most of the qualities possesed by different types of undead, that could be given to undeads as they are created, short description of typical undead lackeys and what the expected capabilities of each type of undead, and their duration (because undeads do have a lifespan...).

Then come some decent creatures, and an extremely cool necromantic siege engine which brings lots of ideas to mind.

The book closes with the history of the secret college of necromancy, and how to use it in your campaign, this part of the book is well written and very interesting, and the college is very usable in any setting.

I really like this book, it's fun to read, nicely done, and fills some voids that typical PHB necromancers have. Both core classes are usable in an evil aligned campaign, and they certainly add some badly needed, and very colorful evil core classes players will surely enjoy.

It also has some minor flaws, specially the feats mentioned and some of the spells, but these are minuscule drawbacks compared to the rest of the book, which is quite good.

I highly recommend this book, and give it 5/5 stars!

4 out of 5 stars Creative but possibly overpowered.......2003-01-28

This is a pretty good resource for DMs. It has two new classes, the death knight and the necromancer, both of which have some neat abilities. However, you can't really use this for players because it seems (to me, at least, from playing a bit with it) the Necromancer is a bit more powerful than an equivalently levelled wizard or cleric. This probably holds true until somewhere around 9th level, at which time it is quite a bit more even (the reduction in spells become significant at that point). The Death Knight is a great nasty to throw against players, I haven't used it as much but the flavor is much appreciated and I think these folks have done a good job overall.

I did not like the book, since being in the industry for more than seven years i felt the book is basic. However it is a must read (Cover to Cover) for those who are in undergraduate in the field of risk management or finance. This books gives the introduction to financial model building. But this intro is so brief that it will be your imagination to make full use of it. However for new commers in this field or interested it is good to give it few hours.

I had the pleasure of working with one of the authors 15 years ago. But don't let that sway you. I truly appreciate the scope and effort put into this book. We will use it as an outline for how our analysts should approach analyzing a credit. Chapter 3 alone is worth the price of admission as the authors list the elusive "qualitative" factors that go into a credit rating, beyond what the ratios tell you it should be. While the book barely scratches the surface of certain analytical methods (the Merton Model got 1/2 a page), and it is written more for the layman or student, I still learned many things. And I've been in the business 20+ years. The prior reviewer, and many others will say they wished they wrote this book. I will too. I even briefly started my own version recently. But I first turned to S&P's ratings criteria as an outline. As such, the right people wrote this book. The authors fully used the vast resources and data mining of S&P. This certainly feels like a team effort. The telecom analyst wrote a piece on the rapid decline of telecom credits in 2000-2002, and other professionals added real life examples. The book organizes itself in the top down approach to analysis. It starts with sovereign risk, then moves to industry, then company business/competitive risk. It then highlights the ratios to look for, and also gives data on seniority and recovery values for specific levels of debt. It then uses these tools to analyze a fictional company. It ends with case studies that cover M&A, sovereign risk and other topical reviews that act as a real life summary to what you just learned. Highly recommended. Well done.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Corporate Bankers & Credit Analysts.......2005-01-24

This book is long overdue. It typically takes a credit or corporate banking professional several years and several levels (analyst, senior analyst, associate/assistant vice president, and finally, vice president) to piece together the knowledge and analytical skills presented within this wonderful book. The book offers a comprehensive foundation in business, financial, and strategic analysis (among several other related topics) in a very easily digested and understood manner. I guess my only complaint is that I didn't have the opportunity to write it myself!! I would advise every credit or relationship management team leader to purchase this book for their entire team -- particularly for their analysts and associates (although... on second thought, perhaps everyone on the team should have a copy in their desk drawer.) Bottom line: Highly-recommended. AAA+++
