O.J. Is scum. Anyone buying anything that puts money in his pocket needs their head examined.

5 out of 5 stars Ha Ha to the Morality Net Police.......2007-01-13

OJ Simpson is a wonderful guy, regardless of his guilt or innocence. If he is guilty, then his acquittal was a marvelous use of his resources to exact revenge on Nicole 'the prostitute' Brown. If he's innocent, then that's nice too. Either way, Americans continue to contribute to his pocketbook as they have in the past via football, and in the present via his book sales. So however the dominoes fall, OJ is brilliant. The morality patrol who surf the web spreading the "OJ is a guilty evil man" gospel, are only aiding to line his wallet. Especially now that "If I did It" has been banned. That book will be worth it's weight in gold WHEN it becomes available.

Oh, and in reference to this book. It's excellent. I happily contributed the cost of this book to Mr. Simpsons bank account... an account that Goldman and his gold-diggin' family can't seem to touch. LOL.

5 out of 5 stars Who needs the sequel?.......2006-12-03

Even though Fox News and Regan books may have decided (fools!) to retract Mr. Simpson's latest Gospel, "If I Did It," we may all rest assured that this grand epistle is still in circulation. Be not faint of heart, ye believers, the Word according to O.J. is not forgotten among the faithful! Find strength in Him whenever you find yourself in despair--such as when you are, say, stabbing your wife to death--and righteousness shall always prevail....

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing insight.......2006-11-21

I am happy OJ had the opportunity to get his side of the story out there. He is a good role model for people who want to do what they want in life no matter what anyone says.

1 out of 5 stars As sick, pretentious and nasty as could be........2005-09-23

We all know that O.J. Simpson is 1000% guilty of this horrific double-murder and that he was able to buy justice thanks to his shameless "Dream Team" lawyers (or liars) and their utterly despicable tactics. Despite the countless lies found here, what I find most offensive, nasty and sickening is how Simpson refers to himself as being a "battered husband"--Say What???!!! Lies, more lies and nothing but big, nasty and fat lies.

    Book Description

Most researchers, even with computers, find only a fraction of the sources available to them. As Library of Congress reference librarian Thomas Mann explains, researchers tend to work within one or another mental framework that limits their basic perception of the universe of knowledge available to them. Some, for example, use a subject-disciplinary method which leads them to a specific list of sources on a particular subject. But, Mann points out, while this method allows students and researchers to find more specialized sources, it is also limiting--they may not realize that works of interest to their own subject appear within the literature of many other disciplines. A researcher looking through anthropology journals, for example, might not discover that the MLA International Bibliography provides the best coverage of folklore journals. In Library Research Models, Mann examines the several alternative mental models people use to approach the task of research, and demonstrates new, more effective ways of finding information. Drawing on actual examples gleaned from 15 years' experience in helping thousands of researchers, he not only shows the full range of search options possible, but also illuminates the inevitable tradeoffs and losses of access that occur when researchers limit themselves to a specific method. In two chapters devoted to computers he examines the use of electronic resources and reveals their value in providing access to a wide range of sources as well as their disadvantages: what people are not getting when they rely solely on computer searches; why many sources will probably never be in databases; and what the options are for searching beyond computers. Thomas Mann's A Guide to Library Research Methods was widely praised as a definitive manual of library research. Ronald Gross, author of The Independent Scholar's Handbook called it "the savviest such guide I have ever seen--bracingly irreverent and brimming with wisdom." The perfect companion volume, Library Research Models goes even further to provide a fascinating look at the ways in which we can most efficiently gain access to our vast storehouses of knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Should be a required text in library school........2005-06-07

I just finished reading Thomas Mann's Library Research Models: A Guide to Classification, Cataloging, and Computers (New York: Oxford University Press, 1993). It is an outstanding book, one I recommend for all library students and librarians. I wish my reference professor had assigned this as a text!

Mann, who is currently (as far as I know) a reference librarian at the Library of Congress, describes a number of different library research models, including: specific subject or discipline model, traditional library science model (classification scheme, vocabulary-controlled catalog, published bibliographies and indexes), type-of-literature model, actual-practice model, and computer workstation model. He notes the limitations and powers of each approach, and he concludes the book with a cumulative methods-of searching model that uses most of these models to account for the weaknesses of the others. If you want a comprehensive approach to your next massive research project, Mann provides it!

Along the way, he made a number of excellent arguments. The first is that most people believe that the organization of information in the library consists of the classification scheme alone. Thus, people assume the only way to access the information in a library is to find the call number or class where a certain subject might be and browse around that area in the stacks. Unfortunately, this is a deficient assumption. As Mann and critics of classification schemes point out, one book can address many subjects. So, where does a book go then? Similarly, a book addressing one subject can address many different aspects of it. Which aspect should be be brought out in its class assignment? Given these probelms, a person browsing the stacks may be missing several relevant books if he or she restricts the search to one class area in the stacks. Nevertheless, classification is important, as it provides a library user access to the full text of the library's collection. Mann provides examples of information that cannot be found through a library's catalog or various bibliographies and indexes, but only through browsing in the book's of a library's collection.

Another argument he makes is the controlled vocabulary used in the library's catalog is a powerful mechanism for providing access to information. Specifically, controlled vocabulary provides predictability and serendipity. Yes, that's right. Mann provides innumerable examples to show this. He rightly criticizes information scientists who insist that keyword/postcoordinate searches have made controlled vocabulary irrelevant. "Tagging" has become popular. However, tagging lacks authority control and the syndetic structure of thesauri and books of subject headings, such as the Library of Congress Subject Headings, and thus lacks the full predictability of formal controlled vocabularies.

Mann describes another aspect not emphasized in research or in library science education: the importance of bibliographies and indexes. He notes that the Library of Congress classification places encyclopedias and other guides to the literature in the A class (these works, he says, serve as a "table of contents" to everything after it, that is, works in the B through V range). Class Z includes bibliographies and indexes. These are at the end in the classification scheme; they serve as an index to everything before it. Mann explains how to find bibliographies, both in the catalog and in the classification scheme, and, again, provides illustrative examples of the usefulness of these works.

If there are powerful, traditional approaches to finding information during the research process, why don't we use them? There are many reasons. Mann speculates at length. One reason is that methods courses in graduate work tend to focus on discipline or subject specific resources (often in the form of lists), instead of library research approaches. Library science education, on the other hand, tends toward the type-of-literature model. Students in a LIS reference course, for example, learn about specific almanacs, atlases, encyclopedias, etc., without learning how to find them more generally, for any subject, using a library's controlled vocabulary. Reference course work in specific areas, such as government information or science, is actually a combination of the type-of-literature and the discipline/subject models. This has been the case, in my experience. If I were to teach a course in general reference, I would definitely assign chapters 3-5 in this book! (These chapters cover the library science model: classification, controlled vocabulary, and published bibliographies and indexes).

Another reason why many of these approaches aren't used is due to what is known as the Principle of Least Effort. Mann refers to this principle repeatedly throughout the book and wrote a chapter on it. We are comfortable chatting with our fellow students or coworkers and asking for good articles or books they may have read or seen, or simply looking at the footnotes of one or two articles we may have happened across in a simple keyword search of some particular database.

Mann's reliance on controlled vocabulary could be considered one of the book's weaknesses. Yes, it is important for finding information in the library, but it is difficult to teach. I would guess that most librarians would not feel comfortable teaching the LCSH! Also, most people loathe to consult the big red LCSH books, but, at the same time, there isn't an easy way to browse them online. Even the LOC's authorities Web site isn't as easy as browsing the LCSH books, in my opinion.

Another criticism of the book may be that it is a systems approach to research. That is, the book emphasizes the systems of research rather than the user. Well, that may be, but Mann does acknowledge the weaknesses of these research models and the systems they use. He also acknowledges that they take some learning. But, especially for print resources, how else is a user to find information in the library? There's been lots of research done on information seeking behavior, but few if any of these studies have suggested real changes to the current library organization model of classification, a vocabulary-controlled catalog, and indexes and bibliographies.

In spite of these possible criticisms, this book helped me see the organization of library information as a whole (classification [browsing], vocabulary-controlled catalog, bibliographies and indexes). This book has me looking very much forward to an update of Mann's other book, which will be released later this year: The Oxford Guide to Library Research.

4 out of 5 stars If you don't know the "red books" you're missing the boat.......1999-11-16

Dr. Mann (who has a Ph.D. in English and worked as a private investigator at one time) is a senior reference librarian at the LoC and knows his stuff. If you need serious help stop by the main reading room on Weds. nights and you'll likely find him. The book is very good but his personal knowledge is even better!

4 out of 5 stars Not comprehensive as title indicates, but worth reading.......1997-04-10

Most interesting to me was the author's assertion that digitalization of books adversely affects their preservation, due to the evanescent nature of computer software and hardware standards. A book printed 500 years ago is still readable today. Could the same be said for a CD-ROM 500 years from now

      Book Description

Music Library and Research Skills provides an introductory text designed for courses in music research, methodology, and librarianship. Written by Jane Gottlieb, Vice President for Library and Information Resources at the Juilliard School and past president of the Music Library Association, the book is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts in how to conduct research in music. This book combines both a basic source list of key reference materials that every music student should know along with specific instruction in how to evaluate and use these resources. Following an introduction giving an overview of the universe of information available on music, the book then traces the research process, from choosing a topic to using books--from bibliographies to discographies, histories, and thematic catalogs--and periodicals, web sites, CD-ROM, and other information resources. The book concludes by showing the student how to synthesize what the research process has produced into a final paper. Intwo appendices, the book offers a select glossary of terms for research and non-English language terms commonly found in music research tools.

This BradyGames strategy guide does an excellent job of walking you through all 3 variations of each of the 10 missions that comprise Tenchu/Stealth Assassins. The maps are clear, the screen shots are plentiful, and the explanations are concise. At the end of each mission is strategy to defeat the boss(es) for that level (except for missions 2 & 8 - no boss(es)!!!). The last page of the guide contains secret codes and a list of secret items that a Grand Master (a player scoring 400+) will earn after each mission. Everything a good strategy guide should be. Are you listening Prima? Night has fallen.

4 out of 5 stars Good strategy guide.......2000-08-19

The book offers good step-by-step instructions for all the levels. The book doesn't delve to deeply into instructions on how to kill the bosses, but if you can't beat the bosses without the book than just set down your playstation controller and just walk away. Never pick the controller back up, just throw it away. The codes are all there but with the book you shouldn't have to use them.

This strategy guide is not only vital to getting a Grand Master rating for each and every mission, but is beautifully laid out. I enjoyed the character art and step-by-step pictures in the walkthrough.

          Book Description

The old rules of business are dead. Business has become less Wall Street and more Wild West-if you want market share, you need to be a maverick. In order for your start-up to survive and thrive, you must make sales, create product, market your services, and hire employees. If you're one of the eight million entrepreneurs who doesn't have access to outside capital-or doesn't want the strings that come attached to it, Bootstrapping Your Business is your practical, comprehensive blueprint for starting and sustaining a profitable enterprise.

Greg Gianforte, the nation's top Bootstrapper, shows you the advantages of Bootstrapping vs. traditionally financed start-ups. You'll also learn how the unconventional Bootstrapping mindset-inventive, pioneering, and skeptical of conventional wisdom-applies to you and your business. With Bootstrapping Your Business at your side, you'll gain the advantage you need to outperform the competition-and succeed in today's take-no-prisoners marketplace.

          4 out of 5 stars A good follow-up from Rob Ryan's "Smartups".......2007-02-14

If you're a fan of Rob Ryan's excellent book "Smartups," then you're familiar with the name Greg Gianforte. Rob (of Ascend Communications fame) uses Greg and his RightNowTechnologies in many of his really great examples. One thing Greg does that Rob made special mention of is the 'sales spec sheet.' As Greg explains the concept "I called hundreds of companies and asked to speak to the customer service manager. I described the software that I had dreamed up and faxed them the specs--just a page, nothing more. Then I asked them whether they'd be willing to buy this product for their company's website."

That small practice was literally the birth of RightNow. In 'Bootstrapping,' Greg and co-author Marcus Gibson start with that point and expand from there. The book's authors take a unique position - if your goal is to figure out how to raise money...this isn't the book. 'Bootstrapping' is about how to cobble together a go-live strategy _without_ having to raise money.

Because the software business won't resonate with everyone, the authors have examples from caterers, printers, dry-cleaners, organic grocers and other businesses to which the 'average' reader can relate. These are types of businesses you frequent in your everyday life.

          1 out of 5 stars a mediocre book.......2006-09-08

I am surprised to see so many people think highly of this book. I have a startup for a new software product and am trying to bootstrap (to raise VC money you still need paying clients).
I read this book some months back and was disappointed. Two false things stuck out even now:

          1) dont prototype, pre-sell your idea. This may work for service type companies, but may not work for products. Why? as you build the prototype, you will innovate and the end product will be unrecognizable from the idea at the start. This was my case. I had to build my prototype. The customer doesnt know what he wants until it is laid out in front of him.

          2) exploit your employees. He didnt say it explicitly or would have been sued for age discrimination, but he says, hire people without much experience, and full of energy ie. young. Then make them work long hours for cheap. I have seen a big name (top three) consulting company deliberately do this strategy and burn their people out. Sorry, that is not how I plan to build my business!

The best book for startups is Kawasaki's "Art of the Start". Skip this book.

          5 out of 5 stars Totally inspired.......2006-07-03

          Mr. Gianforte,

I read the article you wrote regarding Bootstrapping, and have also read reviews and excerpts from your book, and I must say that I am now totally stoked as I move forward in bringing my ideas for a web-based product to fruition.

A childhood friend came to me with an idea for a web-based tool that he is developing himself and asked me to be his partner. We have been in development for the past year, and have debated back and forth on seeking investor capital or not seeking investor capital because we have been approached on three occassions by someone that heard what we were doing and wanted to invest in us. Even though my partner is writing each and every line of code, and this has taken some time, it has given us the opportunity to check out our competition, lay a solid foundation of contacts, and formulate a marketing plan so that when we hit the streets, we will hit the streets with a huge bang, hopefully loud enough to be heard in Montana.

Some days I get discouraged and today was one of those days until I read your article, and thought about some of the points you make on how VC can actually create a sense of laziness or cool the burn to succeed just a little because you have cash behind you.

Well,,,,I am no longer discouraged!! I feel the direction we are going is what is going to make us strong.

          Thanks for the inspiration.

          Take care!!

          Phil M.

          5 out of 5 stars It's a great book.......2006-07-01

This book is perfect for the person looking to start a new business. It is an introduction to the concept of bootstraping, not a step by step guide to starting a business. If you need a step by step guide to starting a business, you probably need more help than you can get from a book anyways. After reading this book, I used the concept of bootstrapping to start my own business that would have other wise been out of my reach. The book teaches a thought process outside of the traditional business approach, not only to starting a business, but for running a successful business for years to come. The review about the book not having any applicable information about running an online business, is way off. That guy missed the point of the book, this concept can be applied to any business. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A good book for those with no business background - from someone who is "bootstrapping".......2006-06-06

After reading a few of the other reviews for this book, I had to leave my own. First of all in response to the complaint about this book not being about "online businesses", this book is about starting a company without any outside investors, no angels, using only your own cash and whatever loan you could squeeze from the bank (otherwise known as "bootstrapping"). This book was not marketed as a book about online businesses so I don't understand where such an expectation could come from. I mean, just read the title. However, many of the examples in the book involve people who have online businesses and I found those examples to be interesting and illustrative of the points that were made in the book.

We come from a background of very little business experience, but a lot of experience with technology. A lot of our business education has been through trial and error. If I had read this book earlier I would have avoided a lot of those errors.

I haven't read Inc a lot or a lot of other business books so I don't know if the information in this book was recycled from those, but that is irrelevant to me. I only care if this book is a good one and in my opinion, it is.

All the other books I have bought on starting and growing a tech business spent too many pages on how to get venture capital, how to find investors, how to please investors, how to solve problems with investors, etc. We have none of those problems. This was the first book that adressed the exact problems that we have had - about 10 problems that have caused us a lot of headache - that we would have avoided if we had read this book earlier. The book offered solutions that I had not thought of but wish I had. From my own experience with the problems that this book warns new business owners about, I think the advice in this book is astute.

So, in conclusion, this book was everything I've been looking for. It is perfect for me because it taught me a lot of things I've needed to know.
