    Book Description

This book traces the circulation in Britain of three Hollywood films--Basic Instinct, Bram Stoker's Dracula and Natural Born Killers --from marketing and critical reception to consumption in cinemas and on video. It draws on economic discursive contexts and original audience research to trace how meanings, pleasures, and uses are derived from popular film. A significant intervention into methodological debates in film studies and a timely investigation of film culture, it focuses on key questions about genre, taste, sexual pleasure and screen violence.

    Book Description

This indispensable manual takes school practitioners step by step through conducting functional behavioral assessments and using them to plan effective interventions. The authors present a cogent rationale for the use of functional behavioral assessment (FBA), clearly explaining its advantages over traditional approaches to dealing with problem behavior. Basic terms and procedures are defined and the process of working with individual students is described in depth. Bringing concepts to life with realistic case examples, the authors also include a variety of sample FBA reports and corresponding positive behavior support plans. A Q&A chapter offers straightforward answers to practitioners' frequently asked questions. Perhaps most important, the volume provides all of the tools needed to complete a reliable and valid FBA, including forms, questionnaires, and worksheets, with a large-size format and lay-flat binding for ease of photocopying.

5 out of 5 stars Resource for school psychologists.......2007-05-07

This book is an excellent resource to school psychologists and other professionals who may conduct functional behavioral assessments. It provides numerous forms that can be used to create semi structured interviews or simply give to classroom teachers and others. This book also provides multiple examples of how to format an FBA report which may be useful to some practitioners.

    Book Description

"While the study of the engineering method is important to create the world we would have, its study is equally important to understand the world we do have." --Billy V. Koen, Introduction, Discussion of the Method Discussion of the Method outlines the heuristic-based reasoning used by engineers and generalizes it to a universal method for problem-solving. Delving into the connection between engineering and philosophy, this ground-breaking text illustrates how the theoretical and the practical can merge to form real-world solutions. Furthermore, the methodology covered in this innovative book is extremely user-friendly, and easily synthesized with individual approaches to problem-solving. Discussion of the Method is an ideal supplement for introductory and advanced courses in engineering, philosophy, and other disciplines, as well as a compelling read for general audiences. THE METHOD: AN OVERVIEW BLPart I describes the problem situation that calls for the talents of the engineer and emphasizes how frequently this situation is encountered. BLPart II defines the heuristic and the engineering method. BLPart III lists examples of heuristics and techniques used to implement the engineering method, describes several alternative definitions of the engineering method, and renders the method in its final form. BLPart IV generalizes the engineering method to a universal method. BLPart V gives a concise, justifiable statement of universal method. BLPart VI delivers a specific example of the universal method in use.

An excellent book that provoke you to re-think a lot. Strongly recommend esp. for scientists and TRIZniks.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Original Synthesis of many Disciplines.......2004-01-10

This book came recommended to me by a professional engineer. As I started turning the pages during a first skim read, it struck me that Koen has brought together a huge amount of experience on engineering with a deep understanding of philosophy (to his credit, both Western and Eastern) plus a range subjects from classical literature, world religion and the vagarities of world languages and forged them into a brilliant synthesis of remarkable clarity and originality.

His central thesis is "All is heuristic" (All is rule of thumb). He has surrounded this argument with a phalynx of other heuristics (59 in total)that range from the practical (e.g., at some point in the project, freeze the design) to the metaphysical (e.g., sincerity of belief and the inability to disbelieve are poor justifications for claiming that a belief is true) to the paradoxical (e.g., if a concept produces paradoxes, unexplained complexities or unexpected departures from expected results, better consider it a heuristic)

In writing this book, Koen has both mastered and melded a number of seemingly imiscable disciplines - philosophy, linguistics, theology - with his own professional field of engineering (he is professor of Mechanical Engineering at University of Texas at Austin and a fellow of the American Nuclear Society). It is reminiscent of the way that Thomas Acquinas reconciled Christianity with Philosophy.

This is no mean feat, and Koen's book, unpretentiously entitled "a discussion", is an intellectual tour of the first order. Of course, his many references mean so much more if you are familiar with them. If you haven't, be sure to look them up - your life will be immeasurably enriched. In any event, Koen illuminates a path to greater understanding. His prose is very engaging and the book is well suited for general audiences. It is one of those books that begs to be read and re-read.

One can only wonder if Koen's book had been available earlier (it was published in 2003), would we have been faced with such disasters as Challenger and Columbia, as the Ford Explorer, Chevy Corvair, Ford Pinto, Bhopal, etc. A little more humility with the inherent uncertainties of engineering life might have made a positive difference. This book strives hard - and I believe succeeds - at doing just that. Bravo, Professor Koen for shedding new light on old problems. It comes as no surprise that Koen has won high awards for teaching excellence (W. Leighton Collins and Centennial Medallion) - both from the American Society of Engineering Education.

From the author: Accommodations influence the measurement of student proficiency. However, with discrepant research findings, it is difficult to evaluate the effects of these practices on the measurement of performance of students with special needs. In this article, we present results from an experimental study investigating the effects of item characteristics on lower and higher readers' differential benefit for two reading-based accommodations on a third-grade mathematics test. Students with lower reading skills differentially benefited from the read-aloud accommodation on items with high mathematics difficulty and high linguistic complexity but did not benefit from a simplified-language accommodation. This study illustrates the need to consider the interaction between item features and student characteristics in accommodations research. Implications for accommodations research as well as practice are discussed.

                    Book Description

Ray Keene, Britain’s senior grandmaster, believes that chess history has been unfair to world champion Tigran Petrosian, whose brilliantly subtle style of play and long record of tournament successes were unjustly overshadowed by the much-publicized career of Bobby Fischer. Now, in collaboration with Julian Simpole, Keene puts Petrosian’s great achievements in their proper perspective, with a fully analyzed collection of 71 of his dazzling victories against the leading players of his time, Fischer included. Other chess books may instruct, entertain, and inform. This one does all of the above—but it also does something much more important: it sets the record straight, letting us fully appreciate the achievements and the genius of one of the game’s greatest players.

                    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, but still not the book Petrosian deserves.......2007-07-26

The main reason Petrosian won for so many years is that no one could figure him out. That remains true today. Kasparov makes a great contribution, but the final remarks he quotes from different masters on Petrosian show that unfortunately the memory of Petrosian is dominated by his match strategy in the 1971 world championship cycle [after he had already played in three world championship matches] in which he tried to totally restrain his opponents and took two matches by winning just one game each. His amazing win rate in Olympiads and record in tournaments, Soviet Championships, and Interzonals is mathematically impossible for a drawing master. Vasiliev unfortunately spends his entire book trying to show that he is a sparkling tactician. That's fine but it misses the uniqueness of Petrosian's style. Soltis' poor book sees Petrosian as an ugly pragmatist. Who could deny that Petrosian had a unique and mystifying style? So, as with Spassky, I have waited a long time to read the book that would be a monument to his career.

There are some good annotations in this book and the games are very well chosen. However, there are no photographs, the introduction is skimpy [15 pages] and there are no introductions to the games at all. The book is a collection of annotations without context that dehumanizes this unique personality and his intensely personal struggles and fascinating clashes of style with characters like Korchnoi. Each game deserved at least a little introduction to set up and enrich the reader's appreciation of the games as sporting events and fierce human struggles. I kept going to other books to look up where he stood in a tournament or match. If as a lover of chess, you want to enjoy Petrosian, then this book is really just a companion to Kasparov who gives a much richer treatment that brings Petrosian's games to life. Keene has made a career of pumping out little books. A second edition that addresses the inadequacies could also be the monument to Keene's career as a chess writer as well as the great book on Petrosian.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection of Petrosian Games.......2007-07-26

This book has a fantastic collection of Petrosian games versus the elite players of his time. The selected games teach a lot of petrosian strategic concepts, like defensive position, prophilapxis, sacrifices, etc.
The only drawback I miss in the book it is a detailed biography.
                    Regards.

4 out of 5 stars A "weak" world champion? Not on your life.......2007-07-22

Some world champions are seen by the chess public as "weak" and "boring". Petrosian is one. This injustice is corrected by Keene's latest book, which gives us 71 of his victories.

Nowadays, with databases and computers, to find games and variations is easy, so quality depends on explaining which variations are critical in "real life" (something computers are still not that good at) and how the variations are tied together into an overall game plan. Here, Keene and Simpole do a good job. The annotations are detailed, try to explain why the game "worked out" as it did, and--an indicator of quality--the opponent's moves are sometimes praised and Petrosian's sometimes criticized. Sadly, Keene's overheated writing is sometimes on display: "the entire black army is consigned to an Hadean frozen lake of Dante-esque or Miltonic dimension", he writes of Petrosian-Fisher, 1959.

Keene writes both good and bad books. The more Keene cares about his subject, the better the book. He cares most about unfairly-maligned or misunderstood chapions of the past; his best books are those about Staunton, Nimzowitsch, and--now--Petrosian. If only there wasn't so much chaff in Keene's total output along with the wheat.

                    4 out of 5 stars Petrosyan.......2007-02-13

Petrosyan studied Nimzovich's games. Petrosyan was World Champion before Spassky. Petrosyan defeated
Botvinnik, and lost to Spassky. There have been other books on Petrosyan. An older volume was written by
                    O'Kelly.
His style: Petrosyan was known for his draws. On several occasions he showed an attacking style. Such as one game where he sacrificed his queen.
                    As for the above post:
Götterdämmerung (help·info) ("Twilight of the Gods" - see Notes) is the last of the four operas that comprise Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung), by Richard Wagner. It received its premiere at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus on 17 August 1876, as part of the first complete performance of the Ring.

The title is a translation into German of the Old Norse phrase Ragnarok, which in Norse mythology refers to a prophesied war of the gods which brings about the end of the world in Völuspá. However, as with the rest of the Ring, Wagner's account of this apocalypse diverges significantly from his Old Norse sources.
The term Götterdämmerung is occasionally used in English, referring to a disastrous conclusion of events.

Raymond Keene. I would recommend any book written by Raymond Keene. He writes in a clear manner.
Another volume for consideration would be his book on Nimzovitch's games. Note that Petrosyan studied
                    Nimzovitch's games as well.

                    Book Description

25 chess games chosen, arranged, and annotated to help amateurs learn how to avoid a variety of weak strategic and tactical moves. Selected, with commentary, by World Chess Champion Max Euwe and by Walter Meiden, an amateur player, the games point out graphically how the chess master exploits characteristic errors of the amateur.

                    5 out of 5 stars chess mastery.......2007-07-27

The book "Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur" is one of the best books I have read on the subject of learning to play chess. The senior author, Max Euwe, was not only a World Champion but was also a scholar and prolific author. He writes very well and with great authority. He, and his coauthor, Walter Meiden show the reader step-by-step the many mistakes amateur players make and the way master players recognize and respond to those mistakes. The book begins with analyses of games in which the amateur player is very weak, moves through games with stronger amateurs, and ends with games against expert or near expert players. Throughout the book the authors show the reader how the amateurs' mistakes were exploited by the master player. This is a very instructive book.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but may not benefit your play much........2006-11-03

This is a very popular book and a very well written, as is everything my Max Euwe. The average rating I'm giving is based on its impact on my chess playing, which was minimal.

It falls into the category of "Move by move" chess books, and is every bit a well written at Logical Chess. It differs, however, by always have one player rated significantly lower than the other, and points out the ways to exploit poor play.

The problem I have with the book is the same problem I have the Logical Chess, Move by Move. They introduce concepts as they appear in the game, give a brief explanation of the theory behind it, then move on.

For example, at the beginning of each chapter in CM vs CA, Euwe list about 6 concepts that will pop up in the game. At the appropriate point, he will spend a few paragraphs explaining why, for instance, white's bishop is more powerful than black's because of the current pawn structure, then he moves on. The game ends, the next one begins, and the ideas listed are all different. There might be another game in the book that describes good bishops vs bad bishops, but that might be the only time you got to see it. (I don't have the book with me now, so this bishop example might not be perfectly accurate.) Strategic ideas seem to come and go without giving the reader any firm grasp on the concept.

At the level that I am (approx. 1400), I knew the basic ideas for all these strategic elements, I just didn't know how to implement them in my games. This book didn't help me do that. I suppose that were you not familiar with chess strategy, this book would be helpful. With a 314 page book that covers openings, strategy, and endgames, you can't expect anything to be covered very thoroughly.

Again, the book is very well written and deserves the high marks it gets. It just didn't help me very much. I'm 25% through Modern Chess Strategy by Pachman and it has already done so much more for me than CM vs CA.

4 out of 5 stars Instructive Games to learn from.......2006-10-03

This is one of the best game collection books for a lower rated chess player. Typical types of mistakes made by weaker players are taken advantage of by stonger players (masters). This is a good way to learn what not to do and how to take advantage of typical mistakes made by the opponents you are likely to play. This is very good instruction by using games (also falling into this catagory are "Unbeatable Chess Lessons" and "Logical Chess" - also recommended reading!). There are some mistakes and typos, but not a lot. And it is not in algebraic chess notation. For these two reasons I give it four instead of five stars.

5 out of 5 stars The best chess book I have read so far.......2006-08-15

A caveat is in order here: I have read only seven (for-beginners) books.

However, I feel like my "chess muscles" have developed since I started reading this book.

At first, I found it hard to read (at 300+ pages). Then I decided to take it slow, around five pages daily, to derive maximum value. On certain days, I got carried away and covered as many as 15 pages, which took me and my Pocketgrandmaster about two hours.

Why is this the best chess book I have read so far? I found it filled with nuggets of chessic wisdom. Although I would expect that some of his analysis could now be questioned (given the evolution of chess theory since the publication date and the availability of powerful chess softwares), I think that there is still much to be learned from this book.

                    4 out of 5 stars National Master / Professional Chess Teacher's Opinion.......2005-03-25

I think this book is one of the best books for beginner to novice players, or with a rating up to 1600-1700. This book is NOT kid friendly though. I use the games in it to teach classes, but I would never recommend a child buys it. It is great for adults, however keep in mind it uses the old fashion descriptive notation. I wish there were more books out like this. Most books show games between two grandmasters, but it is very useful to watch the way a Master beats a weak player. A 1600 player will learn how a Master easily disposes of 1600 players.

Stemming from research in their previous book, Managing for Excellence, David Bradford of Stanford University and Allan Cohen of Babson College have developed a new "leadership system" based on reciprocal behavior between managers and subordinates. In Power Up: Transforming Organizations Through Shared Leadership, they diagram this model and show corporations how to adopt it. Blasting the fundamental assumption that leaders are responsible for everything within a company (and any unit therein), they suggest that management actually is the responsibility of everyone and offer ways to encourage such behavior even when resistance exists.

                      Book Description

"Cohen and Bradford give both leaders and followers the tangible tools they need to create high performance. Their transformational leadership system is both sophisticated enough to capture the realities of life in today's organizations and simple enough to be immediately useful to managers in any part of the world. This book will be read, re-read, and sent to bosses everywhere."--Rosabeth Moss Kanter, author of Rosabeth Moss Kanter on the Frontiers of Management

"In Power Up, Bradford and Cohen not only convincingly argue the benefits of leading by building a shared responsibility team, they also describe in detail how to do it. Loaded with many powerful examples and detailed cases that bring their concepts to life, this book will inspire any leader."--Jerry Porras, coauthor of Built to Last and Lane Professor of Organizational Behavior and Change, Stanford Business School

"Traditional assumptions about the roles of managers and subordinates are barriers to long-range success . . . Bradford and Cohen provide practical insights into how to transform the leadership systems of modern business organizations, and these insights should be shared among employees and managers at all levels."--Yotaro Kobayashi Chairman and CEO, Fuji-Xerox

"Post-heroic leadership and shared responsibility teams have made a big difference in how we operate at Autodesk. Power Up is critical reading for every manager in high-tech." --Carol Bartz President and CEO, Autodesk

"Power Up's message is clear: in today's business arena, global players must rely on shared leadership, not a single voice. Post-heroic leaders place responsibility where the knowledge is: at every level. Siemens is committed to this new way of working."--Dr. Heinrich von Pierer President and CEO, Siemens

Countless articles and books have called for an end to "heroic," command-and-control management. In principle, at least, business has heeded that call. Acknowledging the need for employee leadership and shared responsibility, companies worldwide have invested heavily in every variety of employee-empowerment program. Yet, such reform efforts seldom have any lasting effect, and managers and subordinates quickly slip back into old follow-the-leader patterns of thinking and behaving.

Does this mean that the skeptics were right all along? Are participative management, self-directed work teams, and other popular empowerment programs just part of a futile effort to change "human nature"? Not at all, say David L. Bradford and Allan R. Cohen in this practical follow-up to their international bestsellers Managing for Excellence and Influence Without Authority. They show conclusively that to believe this grossly underestimates human capabilities and sacrifices any chance for success in today's fiercely competitive global marketplace.

Drawing upon close observation of successful leaders and followers, Bradford and Cohen reconceptualize shared leadership to show how it requires tough and decisive behavior from managers and those who report to them. The authors provide a blueprint for making it work personally and in your organization, whatever your position or formal power.

Exercising their critically acclaimed talent for translating complex concepts into actionable advice and guidance, they show how to create a dynamic, supercharged organizational culture of shared responsibility. Using many real-life examples and vignettes, the authors reveal the mind-traps that keep organizations locked into outmoded concepts of leadership. A pathbreaking contribution to the new leadership from two pioneers in the field, Power Up arms managers with the concepts and tools to release the potential of employees for greater heights of productivity and performance.

I am biased in my report in that I know the book intimately. I can only say that I am aware of no other leadership book that has captured the correct essence of where human leadership is and where it could go.

Yes, read the stories, and the author's words, but I challenge you to look beyond all that they have thankfully given us as simple stories and realize the potential of the type of leadership that they call post-heroic leadership. Forget the label of this leadership they communicate and instead listen to underlying message of Power Up.

John P. Kotter once wrote a poem that goes something like this..."beyond the yellow brick road of naiveté, past the muggers land of cynicism, there lies a narrow path whose entrance is hard to find and poorly lit. Once found staying on such a path is even harder. Undertaking such a path is a moral undertaking. We need many more to take such a path...many, many more." Power Up describes a way that might help you see your way down your own path better and a way that is good for all mankind.

I have always said that this book will never be a best seller, because that just means that a lot of people read it, but I believe that hundreds of thousands of years from now it will still be revered as a great work in promoting the understanding of improving human leadership. It will get there I think, because of those few souls who read it and understand.

I will fight by your side if your purpose is good, and I follow you if your path is pure.

This book is one of the worst business books I have ever read. The authors are clearly on the gravy train trying to sweep up some more consultancy dollars.

This book basically breaks leadership up into two schools, the heroic school and the post-heroic school. The way it works is really simple. Anything bad, belongs in the heroic school, and anything good is post-heroic! WOW! This book is very one-sided and does not even try to entertain the notion that the most effective style of leadership can vary depending upon the situation. It continuously hammers home a certain style of leadership never exploring the situations where different approaches are effective.

I strongly recommend that if one wants to learn and think about leadership, read about leaders!....and by the way, the kind of leaders that we all admire do not even fit into this post-heroic category! This idealistic kind of approach recommended by academics lacks practical real-world substance, and only has value in a classroom.

I am considering using this book to prop up my dining table!

The authors make the impossible seem very possible in this excellent book. The differences between heroic and post-heroic leadership is well defined through stories involving real people. Can an organization switch from heroic to post-heroic leadership, sure, but it is not easy. Somehow this book and its ideas make that ideal a bit more reasonable. Only for managers and leaders who are ready to go out on a limb and turn everything they thought they knew upside down. Good luck.
