This is a well-researched look at Hollywood's never-ending fascination with moonshine, country bumpkins, and what goes on up there in the hills beyond Beverly. In the early 1920s as more people moved to the cities, Hollywood found it could make money telling audiences about the places they'd left behind. Lurid tales of sex and debauchery, such as 1950's "Tobacco Road," undercut the good-hearted goofiness of the Ma and Pa Kettle series of the 1940s. By the 1990s, the Coen brothers' "Raising Arizona" was a hit on the strength of Nicolas Cage's ironic portrayal of a lovable yokel (an updated edition of this book would have to include the current TV show "My Name Is Earl," proving this archetype isn't dead by a long shot).
Williamson covers a lot of ground here, from "The Andy Griffith Show" to John Boorman's "Deliverance," and his conclusions are fairly broad ones. His best writing narrows focus on a specific film or theme: the on-location making of the log-cabin potboiler "Stark Love" (1926) is wildly detailed, with newspaper reporting and interviews with local extras who made appearances in the film as members of an "authentic" mountain family. Lots of movie stills, contemporary cartoons, and detailed captions accompany the text. At times the book reads like a college course -- Williamson is a professor at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, and acknowledges the input of several students -- but for film buffs and general readers, "Hillbillyland" is an entertaining look at how the film industry exploits one facet of American culture.

Sturken's "Thelma & Louise" is an excellent addition to BFI's Modern Classics book series. This analysis of the popular and conroversial film covers several important topics including: the hype and various reactions/criticisms of the film upon its theatrical release, how the film fits into feminist film theory, whether the violence in Thelma & Louise is worse than other films that were NOT criticized for their violence, what genre the film belongs in, Ridley Scott's directorial vision for the film and various motifs, how the characters change and why, what options these women have in a male dominated world, and what the ending signifies. Sturken includes quotes from several articles and interviews.

This excellent screenplay gives a lot of insight into the wonderful buddy road-trip film. Two women go for a weekend vacation and end up getting more than they were expecting,not to mention shaking off the yoke of their male partners. Brava!

Spielmann deserved a better book than this........2006-06-13
There appears to be a movement gaining ground nowadays in the chess publishing world, that all books published on the game must be _instructional_ books: actually directed, whatever their putative topics, toward the more mundane goal of improving the readers' practical level of play and gaining him more ELO points. Biography, history, the philosophical aspects of the game, compositional artistry, general enjoyment --in short, everything peripheral to the game that an earlier and more literate era would have referred to as "chess culture" can be bowdlerized, scrambled, or jettisoned outright by an author and his database in the pursuit of elusive ELO gain.
There is not much chess culture in "Rudolph Spielmann Master of Invention". People expecting a biographical games collection of Spielmann, like the 3-volume Spence collection of Spielmann 30 years ago, or a biography-plus-games collection of the sort that has become very trendy in recent years (Pope on Pillsbury, Hilbert on Napier for example, or even Ehn on Spielmann in German)will be sorely disappointed.
McDonald's research and narrative gifts do not seem to extend to history, nor to biographical narrative. The volume includes a patchy and incomplete biographical "essay" with much of the usual suspect anecdotal material, lucid analysis of a small group of games McDonald considers to be Spielmann's best (here the author, as an undeniably gifted instructor and coach, does his finest work, though even these games are ripped loose from most of their biographical and historical moorings), and various chapters with some games, many game fragments frustratingly bereft of their openings, and numerous single problem-like positions organized on instructional thematic grounds so that the student can assimilate what McDonald feels to be the essential elements of Spielmann's play and incorporate these features into his own games.
Now it is perfectly possible to write a very good biographical games collection with almost no delving into history, biography, or similar, at all. Andy Soltis proves this in his excellent (if apologetically titled for the instructional audience) "Why Lasker Matters". But what McDonald has given us is a hodge-podge of a book that really should not have seen the light of day at all in its current form. The reader wishing to be instructed can find any number of books to instruct him in whatever aspects of his game that need polishing, and these dedicated manuals will do the job better than twisting a historical figure into a pretzel for the purpose. On the other hand, the reader wanting a good (or even a coherent) biographical collection of Spielmann will have to keep waiting, because this title definitely is not it.
Only the small chapter of Spielmann's "best games" presented for their own sake earns this book two stars. Without it the marking would have been still lower.

Born in 1883, Spielmann was among the top world-class chess players in the early part of the 1900s. Although he never held the top position for long nor achieved the legendary status of Lasker, Alekhine, or Capablanca, in most matches he held his own with them, losing by narrow margins. Spielmann made a mark historically and is studied by competitive and ambitious chess players of each generation for his sacrifices or combinations which in his own words were not always "necessarily sound but [leave] your opponent dazed and confused." This tactic can be seen in half of Spielmann's recorded games; whereas by comparison it was employed by other chess masters in only every fifth or sixth game. McDonald--chess coach as well as player on the international circuit--analyzes in detail many of Spielmann's games against top opponents focusing on his use of particular pieces in the kinds of sacrifices and combinations that distinguished his characteristic, formidable style of play.

This book gives a good solid overview of the gift basket industry. It is not really a gift-basket construction or design book. (If you have never made a gift basket, or aren't really sure how to construct a basket properly, I'd recommend her other book "The Gift Basket Design Book." For design ideas and alternative construction ideas, I'd recommend "Bountiful Baskets" by Sara Toliver.) This book, though, quickly addresses pretty much everything you'd need to know to get started in business. My favorite parts were where quotes from other gift-basket owners appeared. I wish there had been more of those.

Ilegal to cater from home.......2007-09-25
Although the concept of this book is appealing, it is ILLEGAL by health department standards to cater from any home kitchen UNLESS it is fully licensed and certified as a commercial kitchen. Hopefully, this author is not giving permission to folks to attempt to cook and deliver food from home kitchens, which is completely against health department rules.

This book is Great! Great! Great! I got it for my partner because I it was something she wanted to do.When I found out that Denise went to CCA (California Culinary Academy)in San Francisco like my partner I new that this book would be great for her. When I told her about it she got so excited that she couldn't wait so we had to go buy it at the bookstore. So far this book has great information.From averages on getting a business license to the supply's you should have to start of. I covers all the little things that you might not even think of when your starting a catering business for the first time. Denise if you your reading this Priscilla and Natalie will definitely be at your seminar in LA next year :)
Not What I Thought It Would Be.......2007-06-01
I originally bought this book because my husband and I are interested in starting a catering business in the next couple of years. I'm currently a culinary student and will be graduating next month. I've worked with caterers and have catered on my own.
With all due respect for Denise Vivaldo's accomplishments, I was disappointed with the content of this book. It provided a lot of information on a high-level overview, but it did not give the detailed information I was looking for.
I would recommend The Professional Caterer's Handbook: How to Open and Operate a Financially Successful Catering Business. It's a bit spendy and more like an encyclopedia but the information is extremely useful and the money well spent.
The best place to begin........2007-02-25
This book is the best place to begin for anyone considering catering as a business. There are so many subjects that I never thought to consider. This is a great guide and, for a minimal investment, can save you making expensive mistakes.
I can't believe I read a how-to book!.......2006-09-08
Denise Vivaldo has done the food service industry a service of her own in writing this book. As a caterer, I couldn't put it down, I read the entire book in one sitting. If you are considering a catering, or even a restaurant business read this book! I found Vivaldo's insight to be not only helpful, but it pointed out areas of the field I had scarcely considered.
Review every book you read- authors deserve your opinions, not just elitist critics.
