Richard McCormick takes a fresh look at the crisis of gender in Weimar Germany through an analysis of selected cultural texts, both literary and film, characterized under the label "New Objectivity". The New Objectivity was marked by a sober, unsentimental embrace of urban modernity, in contrast to Expressionism's horror of technology and belief in "auratic" art. This sensibility was gendered as well as contradictory: while associated with male intellectuals, New Objectivity was best symbolized by the New Woman they feared (and desired). Moving skillfully from Caligari to Dietrich, McCormick traces the crisis of gender identities, both male and female, and reveals how a variety of narratives of the time displaced an assortment of social anxieties onto sexual relations.

New German Cinema: The Images of a Generation explores the context from which the films made by Fassbinder, Wenders, Herzog, von Trotta and others emerged during the late 1960s through to the mid-1980s. It examines the American dominance of the German market place, the development of a film subsidy system, the notion and politics of an Autorenkino, the framework of European art cinema, and distribution and exhibition initiatives that helped facilitate the birth of and shape a new national cinema. The author discusses the way in which the New German Cinema films engaged with contemporary West German reality and how the films can be read as raising important questions about West Germany's self understanding in the postwar era. Although the new cinema was internationally acclaimed, critics were virtually unanimous in declaring its demise in the early 1980s and this study concludes with a consideration of a number of factors that contributed to such a perception.

This attempt to rewrite the story of expressionist cinema begins with a fundamentally new interpretation of Dr. Caligari, and together with fresh views of other expressionist classics, offers new perspectives on important alternative film styles and genres that emerged in films by such eminent directors as Ernst Lubitsch, Joe May, Fritz Lang, Karl Grune, F. W. Murnau, and E. A. Dupont. When New German cinema directors like R. W. Fassbinder, Ulrike Ottinger, and Werner Schroeter explored issues of identity--national, political, personal, and sexual--music and film style played crucial roles. Most studies of the celebrated film movement, however, have sidestepped the role of music, a curious oversight given its importance to German culture and nation formation. Caryl Flinn's study reverses this trend, identifying styles of historical remembrance in which music participates. Flinn concentrates on those styles that urge listeners to interact with difference--including that embodied in Germany's difficult history--rather than to "master" or "get past" it.
Flinn breaks new ground by considering contemporary reception frameworks of the New German Cinema, a generation after its end. She discusses transnational, cultural, and historical contexts as well as the sexual, ethnic, national, and historical diversity of audiences. Through detailed case studies, she shows how music helps filmgoers engage with a range of historical subjects and experiences. Each chapter of The New German Cinema examines a particular stylistic strategy, assessing music's role in each. The study also examines queer strategies like kitsch and camp and explores the movement's charged construction of human bodies on which issues of ruination, survival, memory, and pleasure are played out.

What an outrageous life!.......1999-11-03
Child In Time is the autobiography of Ian Gillan, best known as the singer behind Deep Purple's legendary Mark 2 lineup (responsible for such hard rock classics as "Smoke on the Water," "Highway Star," "Woman From Tokyo," and yes, "Child In Time.") But he's also fronted his own band, Gillan, and Black Sabbath (on one album), not to mention sung the role of Jesus for the original Jesus Christ Superstar. All the while he has lived an interesting life, from his humble beginnings as the child of a divorced marriage, through his early singing days (inspired because he wanted to get into the movies like Elvis), through becoming DP's hard-drinking but always affable singer--and developing a love/hate (some would say hate/hate) relationship with the guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore. In fact the main reason I got this book was to try to get the "dirt" on their relationship. There are some juicy tidbits here, including the time Ritchie smashed a plate of spaghetti in Ian's face because he thought that the singer had put ketchup in the pasta. "Come on!" Ritchie taunted, but Ian just walked out of the room, almost in tears. Eat your heart out, MTV's Real World! But seriously, Ian acknowledges that they're like apples and oranges even if some of their musical collaborations have been magical. Elsewhere, Ian documents his views on drugs, sex, business dealings, and how to deal with traveling in unfamiliar countries. Not to be missed is the hilarious section on his year-long stint with Black Sabbath--pure Spinal Tap if it's to be believed. While there are some egregious mistakes in the book (concerning certain dates), I believe a recent edition has corrected them. Also, some feminists might not cotton to some of his views regarding male/female relationships, even if he seems happily married. Check out Child In Time and learn more about Ian Gillan (and Deep Purple!) than you'll ever see in one single book again (unless the 1983 Deep Purple Illustrated Biography is ever updated and re-released, that is).

Ian Gillan is well known as the character of Jesus Christ Superstar in the record of the opera in the early seventies. Ian tells his career in full details, his family, his passion for music and drink !! Deep Purple is part of his life (most of it) and you can see it well detailed over here. A magnificent job by Ian. The writing is witty and quick-paced and seemingly quite honest, as Ian relates freely both his triumphs and failures as a solo artist and as a member of such classic hard rock outfits as Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.
I highly recommend this for any fan of Ian, Deep Purple, or of hard rock/heavy metal in general.

In fact, I was skeptical that this book could match Thompson's book. Well, I read this one right after and was equally impressed; both have much to offer and are not as repetitive as I anticipated (both contain lots of info. unique to themselves). As a HUGE Deep Purple fanatic (and all things Blackmore), I was very impressed with this book---in fact, it was very hard to put down. Lots of good tidbits I didn't know before (or, if I did, more details were fleshed out); quite a page turner. Get this one asap!

ou must understand what you will get and what you will NOT get here... What you will NOT get here is any details about personal and family lives of any of the members. Not a chance. Not any particular personality traits, preferred hobbies or parallel activities (outside the realm of music). Gossip will not be featured either.
This is a straighforward chronological account of Deep Purple history, with the author doing his best within three hunderd pages.. He was playing a losing game since the beginning, because no one can write a Deep Purple history in only 300 pages. So, I suggest to use this book as a framework to more research on your own.

Cuando uno estudia la historia del rock se sorprendera de var cuan grande ha sido la influencia que en muchos grupos a tendo la legendaria banda inglesa, clasicos, por decir lo menos sus discos Machine Head, Made in Japan, Fireball, en cada disco la mezcla de ingredientes era la justa, el resultado....MAGIA, aunque si bien la formacion Mk II fue la mas conocida no hay que restar tanto a Coverdale como al fallecido Bolin quienes aportaron en dificiles momentos a mantener una layenda....hoy por hoy quizas abusando un poco de su mito Deep Purple se mantiene en la batalla pero ya no como soldados sino como generales que solo añoran poder contar sus viejas hazañas, sus viejas canciones que sin duda han sido para muchos de nosotros los recuerdos de bronce.

this book sucks bigtime.......2004-10-26
I'm 28, a musician, and a big fan of Deep Purple (especially the mark 2 era). I was very excited to read this book before it came in the mail. I read some of the reviews on it here....some of them were negative, but I wanted to see for myself. Well, the truth is...it sucks. Why? Because it is written like a scientific report in a college journal. No one in thier right mind would ever want to read garbage like this. This is a book that you can only read a chapter of before you throw it down in disgust. I'm being extreme, but this is an extreme matter. I was on a tour bus and this is the only book I had! I was forced to try to read some of it. There is some great info in it, but you have to sort through so much other stuff that's its not even worth reading. Maybe one day someone will write a real book on these classic unsung heroes if 70s rock.

I LOVE THIS BOOK... AND THIS BAND.......2004-10-16
Deep Purple was the first group I ever got into, when my elder brother played me Made In Japan while I was still into Styx and Speedwagon. Major Life Change!!! Since then, I've bought every CD I can find, by Purple and the spin-offs, so it was great to find a book that promised to talk about the whole family tree, and does it well. The writing is fast and furious; there may even be too much information crammed in (the book could have been twice as long and I wouldn't have got bored), and the writer really does love Purple in all its shapes and sizes - where else are you going to read about Marlon, Blackmore's Night, the original Ian Gillan Band and Jon Lord's solo carer all in one place? PLEASE don't let the other reviews out you off. This is a red hot read, and it dosn't treat the reader like an idiot (as so many books about Metal bands do.)

Gorgeous works by Bagirov.......2002-05-31
I have been stunned by how beautiful these two books by Bagirov are. I have become used to the cranked out works you see nowadays. These works, although fairly recent (1994 and 1995) hearken back to days of Polugayevsky, when books were written as labors of love, with tremedous care and depth. These books on the English are very special, and should be sought and bought. They go into tremedous depth, but also have constant explanatory textual comments.

In Strategic Thinking, Simon Wootton and Terry Horne teach step-by-step the thinking skills required for sound strategic planning. The authors set out questions to ask and teach how to learn to formulate strategies and write clear and concise strategic plans. The steps taught are easy to apply in the real world. The authors used a very practical approach, and wrote in simple language. The book also has a CD ROM with practical examples that can be used as templates to facilitate the formulation of strategies.
The book teaches a nine step process covering the gathering of information, formulating ideas and planning action. The gathering of information involves an analysis of what is changing, carrying out an audit and reflecting on what one knows. In formulating ideas, one is required to predict where the organisation is headed, decide where it should be going and take care of obstacles to achieving organisational objectives. Planning action involves thinking creatively about alternative courses of action, evaluating their feasibility and making decisions on implementation of the plans.
The book enables me to carry out a systematic process of arriving at optimum plans and strategies for my organisation. I am now aware of the full range of issues to be considered in a systematic thinking process by examining a set of relevant questions and answering them objectively before formulating strategies and writing clear and concise strategic plans.

A handy, no-frills guide to kick-start your planning!.......2001-03-14
Of so many business planning books, which I hold in high regard, this one is the simplest to read and follow, and yet still packed with useful tools and powerful tips. To some extent, I would consider it to be a no-frills, straight-to-the-point, hands-on kind of planning book.
In a nut shell, it provides a step by step approach, with a total of 9 steps, and involves 3 critical stages: gathering information, formulating ideas, and planning actions.
In fact, it has many thought-provoking Prompt Questions and clearly-defined Checklists to help you execute your thinking and planning work - starting from scanning the environment (to find out what's out there), measuring your organisational health, creating more options, right up to implementing an action plan with a monitoring system, using Gantt Charts. These unique features are intended to stimulate and guide all your thinking processes, with each of the nine steps involving a different thinking process.
As a mater of fact, by the time you have gone through all the Prompt Questions and completed all the Checklists, you would have already thought through analytically, numerically, reflectively, predictively, imaginatively, visually, creatively, critically, empathetically, ethically, pragmatically and politically. Also, they have been structured in such a way that you would have developed strategic conversations skills with your people across all levels of the organisation, in the course of the planning exercise.
From a strategic thinking standpoint, this book really scores high marks from me, in spite of its simplicity. When reading this book, it reminds me of two other good business planning books with practical "hands-on" features: `Breakaway Planning,' by Paul Levesque, whose book I have also reviewed earlier. In comparison, `Breakaway Planning' gives a more detailed treatment. The other is `Putting It All Together: A Guide to Strategic Thinking,' by William Rothschild, whose book also gives a more detailed treatment.
This book also comes with a CD-Rom, which provides a business case example, using the 9-step approach.
My only `adverse' comment about the book - it would have been more complete if the authors have crafted a global flow chart at the end pages, showing all the 9 steps in sequence within the 3 prescribed stages, in concert with all the applicable thinking processes and resulting action possibilities. This would have been a superb feature for more visually-oriented readers, like me.
In summing up, if you do not have much time to read, and want a proven tool to help kick-start your planning, this one is for you.
