Book Description

Some friends of ED books concentrate on more serious aspects of Flash - this one concentrates on the fun. Flash can be used for many purposes, but making visually stunning effects to impress your boss, your friends, and anyone who looks at your site is one of the most rewarding.

friends of ED have scoured the web and the Flash community, discovering the most requested and popular Flash effects in action today. We have investigated the visual effects and actual design techniques that Flash beginners have been asking for. The visual inspiration and detailed explanations of how to recreate these effects are combined together in this book.

The eight leading designers in this full color book take these effects apart, showing you how to adapt your basic Flash knowledge to achieve results exceeding anything you thought possible. The effects stay true to the tried and tested friends of ED design-centric approach, with full exercises and explanations for each effect.

Topics include: ground-breaking site navigation; a dynamic MP3 jukebox; cartoon animation; and Flash math visual effects.

All you need to use this book is a knowlegde of the Flash MX interface, and some imagination. So sit back, relax, and open up your mind to the visual potential of Flash MX.

As with all books from friends of ED our support is fast, friendly and free. Even if our dedicated support team are unable to solve your problem immediately, your queries will be passed onto the editors and authors who put the book together. All foED authors help with the support on their books, and will either directly mail readers with solutions or (more usually) send their response to an editor to pass on.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2003-11-04

This book is full of uninspiring projects and poor editing. Tons of typos, and writing that just doesn't make sense in the least. I'm very surprised someone edited this at all.

It was up for sale again not long after I got it.

5 out of 5 stars A real professional.......2003-02-06

Adam Phillip's chapter stands out in this valuable book. Finally, advice from a real professional(Disney) animator. Well respected as a character, special effects and Flash animator, Adam's advice is invaluable to anyone seeking to animate in Flash.

This book has got eight chapters in it, and I've been through four of them so far and am really enjoying it. I bought it because WideGroup wrote one of the chapters and I saw the Sofake site on FlashKit featured site. It's great to see how their Flash files are built and yuou can get all the files for the book on the web site. I made the MP3 player which is great as I've been looking around for tutorials that show you how to do this in Flash MX for ages.

Book Description

Flash MX Motion Graphics covers a variety of motion graphic techniques, taking you from planning and gathering materials through executing, fine-tuning, and adjusting the finished piece. It also features interviews with 10 Flash artists from around the world, including Hillman Curtis, Eric Jordan, and Todd Purgason.
This book focuses on skills to harness motion graphics in Flash MX, including:
* Digitizing video, and capturing, saving, and editing sound
* Incorporating text animation and bitmap images
* Working around constraints such as file sizes and the limitations of the computer screen
* Adding interactive elements
* Using Photoshop and 3D programs to create background images
The author's website, www.seoleuna.com, experiments with the various interactive possibilities of Flash and motion graphics and is featured throughout the book. It's based on the concept of introducing an off-line exhibition to the Internet, which serves as a personal exhibition space for Seol Euna.

5 out of 5 stars An Artist!.......2007-01-05

I like Seol Euna's book very much. More than anything else the book is about how to become an artist. She incourages you to find your own voice. Hopefully I'll put in the work that is required. There are lots of other books that teach the craft. I want to thank her very much for not being afraid!

3 out of 5 stars NOT FOR THE HAND HOLDERS.......2004-01-02

BEAUTIFUL BOOK, ASSUMES SOME KNOWLEDGE IN FLASH AND OTHER PROGRAMS.

1 out of 5 stars Good idea, terrible execution.......2003-09-01

I think the author has tried a little too hard to be different. I like the idea, but the book is quite meaningless.

I didn't think much of the author's websites. She writes a lot about design concepts & principles, but to me most of her flash projects don't look or feel very professional. She hardly utilises the potential of Flash MX and there's hardly any use of vector graphics. On top of all that, there's a lot of silly poems throughout her projects.

Don't waste time on this.

1 out of 5 stars Beautiful and poetic, but not terribly useful.......2003-06-08

Seol Euna's book looks lovely on your desk. It has beautiful graphics and a lovely design. It is essentially useless if you want to learn anything about Flash MX. The directions range from extremely detailed to extremely vague. The quality of the writing suggests that the editor is new to the English language. Non standard language is used throughout. There is no index to find anything. From her web sites it is clear that Ms Euna is a successful designer. She is not a successful author.

1 out of 5 stars If you want something pretty.......2003-05-05

This book disapointed me. It is very nicely laid out. However, if you want a book on using Flash, this is not the book to get. The author uses Adobe, Sound Forge, and other programs in her discussion which is useless unless you have these programs. Bottom line, not very useful. For those experienced Flash users who want something on their coffee table to brag about, this may be the book. For the rest of us, we are looking for substance over beauty.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential!.......2005-11-30

No one in the music industry, be they a musician, club owner, festival manager, booking agent, band manager, merch salesman, etc. has any good excuse NOT to read this book.

It's essential for those who are just starting out, and useful for those who have been in the game for many years. Goldstein's writing is clear and concise, and the book is organized well and peppered with real-life examples and "hot tips", which keep it interesting.

There are dozens of fabulous books on the music industry, from how-to guides to high-level marketing strategy books, but no one should bother reading any of them until they've read this book. It's absolutely essential.

    Review written by
    Kerry Dexter
    Dirty Linen Magazine
    Dec.2004/January 2005 Issue

Jeri Goldstein fairly well created the gold standard for music business books that are both practical and wise when the first edition was released in 1998, offering succinct ideas on setting goals, planning for a long-range future as a musician, when to quit your day job, and when to rethink your music career. Along with those came big-picture straight forward advice on negotiating with venues, planning tour routing, how to set up an office, what to include in a letter of intent, and what to look for in a contract, among other things. The latest edition includes all that, organized into bite-sized chapters packed with information and seasoned with sidebar quotes and tips from music industry professionals...There are updates to the resources sections included with each chapter, added information about immigration issues for artists and about creating and using electronic press kits, and materials on web design. New edition or old, it's a book that belongs on the shelf of anyone who wants to know more about the many-faceted business of performing arts, touring and presenting, and integrating that part of a musician's life into a successful career.

4 out of 5 stars A useful guide (provided no one has moved).......1998-07-02

This book gives information on how to contact agents and break into any aspect (almost) of show biz. It also has lists and lists of addresses to write to for agents, casting directors, auditions, etc... It's very useful, giving you all the needed information in one place instead of telling you to look at Ross Reports, but if addresses and phone numbers and contact people have changed (as they frequently do) it might not be as useful. If a newer version comes out, I'd buy that right away.

    Book Description

The field of cabaret performance is creative, full of opportunity and excitement--and it's booming! Here is the first book to show performers the ins and outs of mounting a cabaret act. Talented entertainers need to know both the creative and business aspects involved: choosing the right material, finding a music director, selecting wardrobe; structuring the act, getting bookings, publicizing the act; and even making a CD of it.

Bob Harrington was cabaret columnist for Back Stage until his tragic death in 1995. Sherry Eaker, editor-in-chief of Back Stage and editor of The Back Stage Handbook for Performing Artists, lives in New York City.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent handbook for cabaret artists, especially beginners.......2001-08-25

For anyone who wants to create their own cabaret show or revise a current show, this is a must-have book. Especially for new cabaret artists, it provides you with the history of cabaret (in NYC especially), issues such as song licensing, researching songs and generally provides great insight into creating an interesting, well-planned and well-performed cabaret show. More experienced cabaret artists will benefit from some of the suggestions for avoiding common pitfalls and other tips and tricks.

    4 out of 5 stars A Helpful Guide.......2000-10-10

Putting together a cabaret act is an art, not a science. Bob Harrington and Sherry Eaker provide information that will make the process a lot easier for the novice, and provide interesting reading for the established professional. Included are helpful chapters on structuring your show, selecting music, working with a music director, and dealing with club owners. There's even an appendix about recording your first CD. If you're just staring out, this book will make the process a lot easier.

I strongly recommend this book for the entrepreneur. Ultra high end real esate is only McKinney's vehicle; his philosophy is universal. Those of us with the entrepreneurial bent tend to find unlimited places to go, things to learn, and projects to start. We often suffer as a result. Mr. McKinney's book is the epitome of Napoean Hill's clear thinking. He clearly has a steadfast moral compass, has thought through who he is, what he wants to accomplish, and how to do it. As a result he is highly successful and the world is better for it. A must read.
PS. Buy the book new - the profits go to McKinney's foundation that houses and supports the world's most poor.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic For Anyone Who Wants to Make it BIG.......2006-11-27

This is one of the best books I've ever read. There are a handful of books I read annually such as the Bible (daily); How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie; Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill; The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Classon; and a few others. This book is on that list so much so that I've read at least a chapter of it weekly since reading it a few years back. It comes with 49 short, easy to read chapters with ACTION STEPS for each. For those of you that can do math- that means not counting three weeks vacation time you can read a chapter a week and DO something about it. Not getting three weeks a year off? You DEFINITELY need to read this.

But seriously, the points Frank McKinney makes in this book are simple, but profound-- my personal favorite is the lost art of taking great risks to attain great rewards. In our namby, pamby culture that values the illusion of stability and security this book is a breath of fresh air, and a real, tangible insight on how you can get fantastically wealthy from someone who's done it.

Running a close second is discovering your passion or "highest calling" as early as possible in life, and developing a vision for your passion. To paraphrase Thoreau "Live Deliberately!". So many people these days live like zombies. The light is on, but nobody is home. Nothing they do is by choice, or from the standpoint of being passionate about something and having a purpose, or vision for their lives.

I could point out the virtues of the whole book, but I don't want to re-write it for a review- so I'll end with my third favorite (which may actually be number one in terms of the order of IMPORTANCE to success) It is in Frank's words, taking the "lunch pail approach". In short- show up to work- consistently, persistently, on time and ready to work. Having run several companies, it amazes me how few people possess the integrity and self-discipline to carry out this first and most basic requirement for success. Woody Allen once joked (paraphrasing) that "80% of success is just showing up" and while it was his brand of self-depricating humour to explain why he, of all people, had done so many hit movies-- it's also very, very true. You can't hit a home run if you never step up to the plate, and you can't step up to the plate if you never show up to practice, and take the time to prepare. Showing up to the big game, or the big show-- seeing your name in the lights, starts with integrity and self-discipline in the little, unpleasant tasks of life that nobody sees you doing, and you don't get any credit for, but that you know you should be doing.

5 out of 5 stars The most life changing book.......2006-07-13

I had been struggling with my Real Estate Investing business for 7 years, after reading Make It Big everything clicked. Everything has fallen into place and the first 6 months after reading the book, my business has made more than all the previous years put together. NO BETTER BOOK OUT THERE. Thanks Frank. 5 out of 5 stars Don't judge an author by its cover..........2005-09-05

Frank McKinney seems outrageous--but this guy is all heart. He is a real inspiration and phenominal motivator. He's got an audio version out too but I think it's only available from his website. Although the phrase about "judging a book by it's cover" is a cliche, it truly applies to this author since you would never expect anyone with this persona to be so kind and generous to those less fortunate.
