Cinema And Modernity
ASIN: 0822320762 |
Book Description
In Empty Moments, Leo Charney describes the defining quality of modernity as “drift”—the experience of being unable to locate a stable sense of the present. Through an exploration of artistic, philosophical, and scientific interrogations of the experience of time, Charney presents cinema as the emblem of modern culture’s preoccupation with the reproduction of the present.
Empty Moments creates a catalytic dialogue among those who, at the time of the invention of film, attempted to define the experience of the fleeting present. Interspersing philosophical discussions with stylistically innovative prose, Charney mingles Proust’s conception of time/memory with Cubism’s attempt to interpret time through perspective and Surrealism’s exploration of subliminal representations of the present. Other topics include Husserl’s insistence that the present can only be fantasy or fabrication and the focus on impossibility, imperfection, and loss in Kelvin’s laws of thermodynamics. Ultimately, Charney’s work hints at parallels among such examples, the advent and popularity of cinema, and early film theory.
A book with a structural modernity of its own, Empty Moments will appeal to those interested in cinema and its history, as well as to other historians, philosophers, literary, and cultural scholars of modernity.
Book Description
The Cultures of Southeast Asia Come Alive In a Striking Collection of New Photographs.
"Taken with a patient eye, McCurry's pictures burn with quiet intensity; they took time to get and they take time to look at."
- Time magazine
More that 2 decades ago Steve McCurry took the picture heard round the world, that of the mysterious and striking Afghan girl whose direct gaze captivated the west and become, for many, a humanizing image of a world they knew little about. Since the publication of that photograph in National Geographic, McCurry has returned to Southeast Asia more than 25 times. Traversing the lands as an inconspicuous candid cameraman, McCurry is able to infiltrate the human condition with his lens, capturing life stories in single, powerful, telling portraits.
LOOKING EAST: PORTRAITS BY STEVE McCURRY is a striking collection of the new and very best of Steve McCurry's gorgeous portraits from Southeast Asia, most of which have never been published before. McCurry takes photographs all over the world, for publications like National Geographic, Newsweek and Vanity Fair, but it is the people, places, colors and forms of Afghanistan, India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Myanmar (Burma) that have inspired his most sublime images - images which transcend their original editorial purpose to become classics of photography.
Steve McCurry has made a home and career out of the road less traveled. A constant outsider, he continues to return to Southeast Asia for the people and, ultimately, the common thread of humanity that he finds there: "I think it's just a sense of adventure and discovery and exploration, exploring new places I haven't been to - trying new food, seeing how Tibetans live, how they practice religion. To me it's fascinating to learn about these differences in how we all are basically the same," he said in a recent interview.
The 75 large format color portraits in the book posses a visual literacy - communicating ideas and stories that evoke feelings of what it is like to be in each of these places. Flipping through the glossy pages readers will find themselves on a search for the `Afghan Girl' of today; looking into the enchanting youthful eyes of a girl from Shigatse (2002), or the tired glare of a coal miner from Afghanistan (2002) or the wise eyes and weathered face of a Monk from Lhasa (2002), the stories behind each portrait seem endless. LOOKING EAST is a gorgeous and captivating collection from one of the word's most admired photojournalists working today. This book is the ideal gift for photographers, travelers and students as well as the perfect addition to any photography library or coffee table.

Magnificant images that truly mesmirize.......2007-08-09
I think this is the best collection and the best printing quality of McCurry's portraits to-date. These images are truly fascinating. I enjoy in particular those from Tibet.
The essence of portrait.......2007-06-08
If you don't know what is portrait photography, or better, if you think you know what is portrait photography, you have to buy and/or read this grand format book !!
Emotion, beauty, technical perfection....certainly one of my favourites
More big-eyed and striking peoples are captured here.......2007-03-12
Photographer Steve McCurry's images of Asian peoples and culture is renowned the world over, so it's especially pleasing to discover them all together under one cover in LOOKING EAST: PORTRAITS BY STEVE MCCURRY. Don't think you know Steve McCurry? Yes, you probably do - he's the photographer who captured the Afghan girl with the big eyes that appeared on the cover of National Geographic. More big-eyed and striking peoples are captured here, displaying the power of the portrait in cultural understanding.

Wonderful and Haunting Images.......2007-02-09
This is a magnificent book full of stunning portraits.
McCurry has captured the soul of his subjects using simple yet finely tuned techniques of a master photographer.
Opening this large book to page 48 we see the Kuchi Shepherd from Kashmir, his orange beard jumps from the page while his sage blue eyes reflect the years.
The Afghan Girl is here too. Her blue green eyes tinged with ochre match her clothes and background so perfectly she appears to own on the page.
Of course I'm romanticising about these images. Most of these people endure hardships most Westerners can't imagine. McCurry went back to look for the girl many years later (a National Geographic documentary). He found her still poor and unknown. Her eyes were still luminous though, her humanity shining through.
This is what photography is all about - no fancy tricks or gimmicks, just letting the subject speak for themselves, to live on the page and in our memories.
Marvelous & Mooving.......2007-01-16
Page after page you are struck by the extraordinary portraits. Steve McCurry is really one of the greatest.
Book Description
This book is a reexamination of the Persian Gulf War by a number of academic and military historians to determine what we did right, what we did wrong, and how our performance could have been improved. This study addresses the questions: Why did the war happen? Was the Gulf War a vindication of Vietnam? Did the American military really learn anything from the war in Vietnam? Did they really adapt? What did the Allies actually win in the Gulf War, if anything? Finally, have we learned anything from the Gulf War? Some authors conclude that in retrospect many analysts have become convinced that despite its military successes the United States garnered little of worth from the Gulf War. Others believe a great deal was achieved, and some have withheld final judgement.

Book Description
Learn how the seclusion of women can be used as a feminist defense against exploitationand as an empowering force
Internationally acclaimed author Ann Chamberlin's book, A History of Women's Seclusion in the Middle East: The Veil in the Looking Glass is a critical interdisciplinary examination of the practice of seclusion of women throughout the Middle East from its beginnings. This challenging exploration discusses the reasons that seclusion may not be as oppressive as is presently generally accepted, and, in fact, may be an empowering force for women in both the West and East. Readers are taken on a controversial, belief-bending journey deep into the surprising origins and diverse aspects of female seclusion to find solid evidence of its surprising use as a defense against monolithic cultural exploitation.
The author uses her extensive knowledge of Middle Eastern culture, language, and even archeology to provide a convincing assertion challenging the Western view that seclusion was and is a result of women's oppression. A History of Women's Seclusion in the Middle East goes beyond standard feminist rhetoric to put forth shocking notions on the real reasons behind women's seclusion and how it has been used to counteract cultural exploitation. The book reviews written evidence, domestic and sacred architecture, evolution, biology, the clan, the environment for seclusion, trade, capital and land, slavery, honor, and various other aspects in a powerful feminist argument that seclusion is actually a valuable empowering force of protection from the influence of today's society. The text includes thirty black and white figures with useful descriptions to illustrate and enhance reader understanding of concepts.
A History of Women's Seclusion in the Middle East discusses at length:
prehistoric evidence of seclusion
the sense of honor in the Middle East
a balanced look at the Islamic religion
the true nature of the harem
the reasons for the oppression by the Taliban
the positive aspects of 'veiling'
seclusion as a defense against capitalist exploitation
and other challenging perspectives!
A History of Women's Seclusion in the Middle East is thought-provoking, insightful reading for all interested in women's history, feminism, and the history and culture of the Middle East.

A History of Women's Seclusion in the Middle East: The Veil in the Looking Glass is a recommended pick for college-level collections strong in both ethnic and women's studies: it offers an interdisciplinary examination of how women throughout the Middle East are and have been secluded, exploring both ideas of oppression and why it may be less oppressive than outsiders think. The historical review of such actions allows readers to consider cultural influences involved in women's isolation.

Armenia rises again, and again.......2006-11-05
In the mid-19th century, Armenians had already been divided for a long time. Their traditional homeland in Anatolia was split up between three empires---Russia, Iran and the Ottomans. Most people there lived either as peasants or townsmen in forgotten corners. Another large segment of the Armenians lived in distant large cities such as Istanbul, Izmir, Isfahan, or Tiflis. The two sections did not often mix. Awareness of Armenia's history, culture and even language was at an all-time low. Inspired by the struggles and movements of other peoples, mostly in Europe, the Armenian intellectuals began to build an "identity", to create a nation where none had existed for half a millennium. Strands of socialism and Marxism wove their way through the national struggle, but they always played second fiddle to the cause of the nation. Rallying around the Apostolic Church and the ancient Armenian language with its own script, but developing strong disagreements among themselves over tactics and directions, the Armenians moved towards a nation state of their own, to be located in Anatolia. Unlike the many Balkan nationalities, the Baltics, Israel, and indeed Italy and Germany too, the Armenians were doomed to failure. Taking advantage of the chaos of World War I, some nationalists demonstrated and fought for a new Armenia, to arise on the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. The idea backfired and led to genocide. The remnants of the Anatolian Armenians, if they did not flee south to Arab cities, to North America or Europe, wound up in a corner of historic Armenia that remained under control of Russia. After a two year period of independence, that Armenia became part of the Soviet Union. Suffering the vicissitudes of life in the USSR, but transformed into an urban, literate, and nationalistic society, Armenia finally re-emerged on the world stage in 1991, impoverished and embattled once again.
Suny's book on Armenia in Modern History deserves high marks for trying to avoid the nationalistic slant that disfigures so many "modern histories". As he himself notes, "the field of Armenian history is marked by unquestioning nationalism, narcissism, and ethnic-pride boosting." Challenging the accepted mythology always makes interesting reading and LOOKING TOWARDS ARARAT is no exception. Suny concentrates on the Armenians of Anatolia and the Caucasus---those who lived further away from the traditional homeland appear only in passing. The book has three themes: the nature of Armenian-ness and the "idea" of Armenia, the struggle to create an Armenian state, and the transformation of the Armenian people from peasants and urbanites in diaspora to an urban, industrial, literate people living in a truncated-but-viable national state. Two issues that are also discussed are the genocide (Chap. 6) and the events that led to a) Armenia's separation from the USSR and b) the war with Azerbaijan in the 1990s. The author covers this last part in blow-by-blow detail. Other than the glaring lack of a good map, I have only praise for this book and for the author in trying to cross through what is no doubt a minefield of angry nationalist opinion. I learned a great deal and can recommend the book to anyone who is seriously interested in the topic. It isn't bedtime reading. It's academic, but still the most useful, well-written book I've found that deals with modern Armenian history.
Another unobjective armenian book.......2006-01-21
Out of curiousity, I visited the previous reviewer, N. Livadas's other reviews (using his own advice - to check on Adam's history or reviews). And, Oh My Goodness, I saw what I hoped not to see - the guy is doing the same things he blaims someone under the nick "Adam" doing. People like this make the world think about the armenians as being funny lyers. This is very unfortunate, since I personally have a lot of close friends from Armenia, as well as other parts of the Caucasus and I find that both sides have their own prism of seing things.
Regardless of my sympathy to armenians as a naiton, I'd like to refer to the facts recognized by the internaitonal observers, and based on my thourough research on the history of conflict, I have to say that this particular piece is "slightly" misrepresenting the facts in favour to the armanian site.
a history of one Armenia.......2003-05-20
This is a History of Eastern Armenia in the present. Easily readible. It details the history of the Armenians and especially focuses on the eastern Armenians in the Russian empire and the Soviet state. A good resource as their are so few books on the Armenians and the tragedy of the Armenian genocide. This is a topic and a people more Americans need to learn about.
Book Description
In a timely, even prophetic, portrait of Asia's rise and the magnitude of its challenge to the West, Fallows demolishes the myth that Japan is a capitalist country built on the Western model. He demonstrates instead how Japan's economic system treats business as an instrument of national interest while casting aside the traditional Western values of individual enterprise and human rights.
Customer Reviews:
Flat earthers..........2006-04-17
People are chasing "The world is flat" instead of "Looking at the Sun"...but this book gives you more cultural background information and analytical thinking.
Still Relevant.......1999-03-14
This excellent book describes the fundamental differences between Asian and American capitalism. Illustrating his arguments with personal narratives, James Fallows argues that Japan is setting an Asian model of capitalism that Western policymakers fail to grasp. Thus, when the Wall Street Journal talks about Asian nations needing to raise consumer spending, the newspaper fails to take into account the fundamental differences. Fallows contends that this failure holds signifcant policymaking concerns for America. One could argue that the collaspe of the Asian markets renders their system invalid, but the Asians remain firm to their model to this day, despite IMF (American) attempts to change their minds. Fallows dives into an area that America frequently fails to consult in making policy decisions: history. Looking at the Sun is still an excellent and relevant read for anyone intrested in Asian affairs.
Book Description
J. L. Black's latest work is a rich and carefully crafted attempt to expose the textures of Russia's perceptions of itself and its place in the world. Based almost entirely on Russian sources, Vladimir Putin and the New World Order argues that to understand Russian foreign policymaking, international situations must be viewed through the prism of Russian analysts and officials.

Customer Reviews:
By-the-numbers short history.......2006-07-15
A short and easy read recounting the history of the chess-playing automaton. I'm surprised at how workmanlike this book is. It reads like a very good graduate student's work: readable, but unimaginative prose. Facts follow facts in a relentlessly straightforward way. Not that straightforward facts are bad, but it's tedious to read "first this happened, then this happened, then something else happened." It's clear that this book's little more than a distillation of an existing body of historical work on the Turk.
It's really dissapointing that the author doesn't bother to explore the Turk's role in the history of technology beyond some general mentions of how more sophisticated gears and cams were later adopted in other areas. Ho-hum.
Much more interesting would be a consideration of the Turk as the starting point for the relationship of technology and marketing, or how the sort of road-trip showcase Kempeln took to show off his invention is *exactly* how hopeful technology inventors still pitch ideas to investors. The final chapter discusses IBM's Deep Blue, a machine that really did play chess, and well, but it's perfunctory, mostly there to say, "...and finally Kempeln's vision came true. The End."
What caught my interest was the role that stage magic played in Kempeln's shows. "Magic" is one of the most enduring and compelling metaphors in technology--it continues to be evoked in product names, marketing materials, and product interfaces--and it seems clear that the Turk and other automata were the first peices of complex technology that used the promise of "magic" and the techniques of the stage-conjurer to find an audience.
I'd hoped those were the sorts of ideas Standage would explore here, as Simon Signh's jacket blurb suggests. Too bad.
I bought this book from here (AMAZON) and revealing secret.......2006-06-05
I read this book, and Yes there was a man in the Turk. In the later chapters it said that the man was French(the operator inside the Turk. He was a strong chess player), the assistant person who was with Maelzel and they toured America (the big cities, like the big Apple, and Philadelphia, and Boston). You can say that he was like the David Lee Roth of his time. He was able to draw crowds to his machine...his machine was very elaborate in dress and Maelzel had a way with words so the living legend lived until Maelzel's assistant died and that was when things went down hill for the operator Maezel. Maelzel died at sea and his body was casted into the ocean . The last owners were the Mitchell's but they did not bring fame and fortune when they got hold of the Turk. The man inside was simply in a crowded position but the size of the so called Turk machine was able to hide him, and the crowds who watched this machine never found out the secret. The Mitchells' exposed the secret but for some strange reason it never clicked with the people, they wanted more. In the end, the Turk was burned in an accident in the city of Philadephia, it was stored in a Chinese Museum.
Oh yes, this fantastic book states that the American's, inventor's by the name of Walker, the Walker Brother's created their own Turk, it was called the "American chess player." It was the rival to the Turk but in the end (rumor has it) that the American Chess player was bought by Maelzel and was destroyed by him. The first owner and creator was Wolfgang Kempelen but then with time it came to different hands, and then it ended in the hands of Maelzel. The Mitchell family got hold of it, but one can say that the secret was never exposed to them because Maelzel disintergrated the machine, and confused it with his other machines so the new owners who would get it would never know the true original secrets of the Original Turk. The Mitchell's guessed at the answer and rebuilt the Turk, but when they exposed their secret to their so called fans, fans really did not buy it. The secrets to this book are in the end chapters, but the whole beginning chapters are really interesting. The writer has alot of flash- in his writing. It keeps you glued. I recommend this to you. I am not being stingy but i want people to know this secret (from the book). Ten stars. Super excellent.
The man machine says yes.......2006-01-30
While we tend to get hung up on the notion of what exactly pure AI is, this book brings us back to square one. Reading the account of The Turk and his exploits it's fascinating to note how little artificial intelligence has changed in 200 years. Regardless of how many advancements have been made in research labs and universities around the world, much of the experience still comes down to trickery orchestrated by humans. The seemingly intelligent Honda robot Asimo is governed by a remote operator. Even less explicit systems such as pattern recognition and neural nets are governed by invisible human hands in the form of their design. Although we've come a long way in terms of technology and computation, anything as fanciful as The Turk is still a long way off.
Tracing the illustrious path of The Turk and his relcutant creator's own life proved to be a rewarding read. The fact that the material here runs a parallel course of science and magic speaks volumes. There's a lot of ground covered; it's well paced and told with a touch of enthusiasm. The sheer number of people The Turk engaged, inspired and challenged is monumental. Considering its subsequent influence on such visionaries as Charles Babbage and Alexander Graham Bell it's a shame that von Kempelen and his most famous creation are widely unknown.
I confess I read the last two chapters first.......2005-12-10
I bought this book because the review in Book Lust got me interested. It arrived and I read the last two chapters first I wanted to know the secret ( and no, I am NOT telling). If the rest of the book is a good as the last two chapters I'll be content.
Theory of a Magician. Of how the Turk Worked. .......2005-06-11
It turns out that the Turk was operated by A human person named "Worousky," he was a polish soldier who by accident got his legs cut off in a fight incident. He was treated by A Russian doctor named Osloff, and during this recovery he was taught to play chess by his medic and with time became a skilled player. Kempelen one day would visit Russia because he wanted to learn Russian and while he was there he came across Worousky, the polish soldier, and this was how he got inspired; when it came to building the Turk. The size of Worousky fit perfectly inside this automaton. The automaton was just a machine not a machine with life. It was human powered but it fooled people quite well, even the rich elite of the past(ignorance of the sciences from their part.) The Turk beat Napoleon Bonapart, but defeated by Worousky himself. One has to think that technology/engineering was a head of its time during that time but not that ahead, everything was still with levers, steam, and old fashion clocks......In todays time one can make a Turk 2, and place inside a person who is like 4 feet tall, as well as he or she being talented in chess. Just think about it. If Worousky had no legs in times past, what would he do according to theory? He most likely would play chess alot. Todays masses are not naive...they are a smart population who know about engines, and frauds, etc. (Maybe if the population were ignorant, a Turk 2 could become an instant hit.) This is like what happened in the wild west days about traveling vendors who went to towns selling their "magic" potions that could heal you, and make you healthy once again. The great thing about the machine (this automaton Turk) was that it inspired people to invent things, etc. Read the book.

Thorough and Detailed.......2007-01-02
This is a thorough and detailed book which covers a wide range of tips that you should find useful and important in enhancing your communication skills. The book covers all the critical aspects of communication including the communication process, the need for effective, active listening, verbal, non-verbal and writing skills, being assertive, effective negotiations, effective public speaking and presentations, among others.
Most of us are poor listeners, as we tend to listen with intent to response rather than to understand what the speaker is really communicating to us. With self-control and discipline, the book gives us tips that we can follow to be effective and active listeners.
This is a self-help that is easy to read and understand and follow. It has a lot of tips and practical advice that should help you change to become a more effective communicator.
Comprehensive Compendium of 1042 Communication Tips.......2006-06-20
A comprehensive compendium of 1042 tips belonging on every committed communicator's reference shelf. Whether a neophyte or accomplished communicator, you will find a useful tip or reminder, each time you open this book.
Easy to Read.......2006-02-24
Dianna Booher writes with clarity and detail, and her book is so easy to read. We're all communicating in one way or another, and Dianna's insights are extremely valuable. You also might learn something about yourself as a listener. I highly recommend this book.
Essential for anyone.......2002-12-25
While this book has a business focus, there are many techniques shown that can be used in all facets of life - in the family, with friends, or in organizations and sports teams. It's a huge (1000+) list of tips for various situations. How do you deal with someone who's not pulling their weight? You don't have to be a manager at work - you can have unresponsive kids, friends who take much more than they give, and committee members who are just along for the ride.
All the points are obvious, but in real life we forget, communicate badly, and then make a bad situation worse. This book has the sort of information that someone gives you when they say, "In that situation I always do . . ." and you could hit yourself for not thinking of it at the time. If you read and re-read this book you'll begin to have these ideas when you need them, not afterward.
The tip formula is excellent. Too many books try to put ideas across in ordinary text and become confusing and unclear. Each tip and its supporting text is complete. You won't be left wondering what the author meant.
I teach people to make presentations and there is plenty here I intend to pass along. My order is in for Booher's forthcoming "Speak With Confidence," because if it's even half as good as this book, it will be invaluable.
One last thought. Think about the times you didn't communicate that well. Think about the stress, the bad relations with other people, and all the negative things that resulted. Now look at the price of this book. Isn't it worth that price just to communicate effectively one time, let alone all the times this book will save the day?
RIP OFF.......2002-02-18
The only thing exciting about the book is the title. I could not wait to get the book and read it. I can't remember being this disappointed in a book - ever. There is nothing of any value in this - just warmed over hyperbole. I am so po'd that I wasted money on this rip off.

A Solid Effort!.......2001-04-24
There's more to communications than words, and according to Colleen McKenna you'll have to master a diverse set of self-expression skills if you want to succeed in business. In her book, McKenna covers diverse topics ranging from speaking, writing and listening, to asserting yourself, solving problems and dealing with put-downs. The impressive breadth of the book is also its greatest weakness, in that with so much ground to cover, McKenna is in no position to delve deeply into any one point. As a result, the chapters are lacking in detail. However, each section does provide a wonderful introduction to issues like the problems of communicating with members of the opposite sex and the best ways to prepare for a public speaking engagement. We [...] recommend this book to professionals interested in getting a well-rounded sample of several communications disciplines before plunging into more in-depth research.
