Book Description

America, 1976. It's the last day of school in a small Texas town; the eighth-graders are getting their first taste of adolescence-a glimpse at high school. Frisbees hang in the air above Led Zeppelin music; the boys in their iron-on transfer T-shirts pop beers, while the teenage Cher clones strap on their cork wedgies and flirt. It's a moment frozen in time, a shift from one era to another. It is dazed and confused.

4 out of 5 stars Three viewings of "Dazed and Confused" not enough? This book is for you!.......2006-08-29

Anyone born between 1955 and 1970 HAS GOT TO SEE Dazed and Confused.

And this book adds to the fun. Plenty of real live Mad Magazine stuff, real live ads from the time period, with a bunch of side splittingly funny made up stuff based on the characters from DAC. Enjoyed the heck out of this book. Just wish it was longer so my trip through memory lane could go on another hour or so.

Great stuff! Where's Wooderson today, by the way?

5 out of 5 stars JUST AWESOME - I LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2004-06-07

It was in a fit of Dazed And Confused mania that I purchased Richard Linklater's tie-in book to his cult classic 70s adolescence movie several years ago. At the time I basically flipped through the book and then put it aside. Until earlier today when I was going through a stack of old college texts I was planning on getting rid of and wonder of wonders came across this one mixed in among them for some reason. So I decided to take a refresher course in 70s stoner adolescence and then offer up my take on it.

What I especially liked about Dazed And Confused the movie was the way Linklater managed to sneak in some profound truths about life amidst the nostalgia. In the book, the most profound and honest part is Linklater's introduction where he writes: "Let's face it, no matter where you live no matter at what time high school is a light prison sentence to be served. Once paroled, you don't look back".

From that point on, any social observation basically goes out the window as we are treated to a crash course in all things 70s as well as stuff related to the movie itself. All of the major characters are profiled and there are excerpts of a yearbook page from the high school they attend. Although it might seem redundant to most people, die hard fans of the film should enjoy it. Pick up a copy! Also recommended -------> The Losers Club by Richard Perez, an offbeat small press novel that you will truly dig. Like far out!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Confusing Here: Fun Book.......2001-03-22

Dazed & Confused is a classic movie about the day in the life of high schoolers in a small Texas town on last day of school in 1976. This book that is a companion to the movie is just like the movie itself: funny. Designed as part high school yearbook, part 70's era teen magazine, it is a nostalgia filled, quick and enjoyable read. There are tons of pictures (the yearbook pictures of the cast are great) and everyone of the major cast member contributes an "article" to the book. If you are a fan of the movie, then this book is a must for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book is Extension of Great Movie.......2000-07-18

ATENTION ALL D&C FANS: IF YOU DO NOT GO OUT AND GET THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW, YOU WILL NEVER KNOW THE WHOLE STORY! This book has everything, from Clint's favorite colored muscle T-shirt to Benny's beer limit. It is definantly a must for not only Dazed fans, but to any fans of the seventies!

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE FOR ANY "DAZED AND CONFUSED" FAN........2000-06-05

Let me just start by saying that I just bought this book no more than an hour ago. As soon as I got home I picked it up and didn't put it down forr the next hour. As a huge "Dazed and Confused" fan, I was extremely happy when I saw that there was a book to go along with the movie. But the book is not just about the movie. It starts out with a great introduction by the director and writer Richard Linklater. In this intro he explains the time period, the pros and cons of the 70's, and where the idea for the movie came from. Also in the book are synopsis's of all the basic charactar (the best is Clints, the guy who beats up the nerd). This book doesn't just follow along with the movie, it is an explanation of the 1970's, I enjoyed it considering I wasn't alive yet. So if you are a hardcore fan of "Dazed and Confused" or a collector of 70's memorobilia, than you need this book.

This compendium provides an enormous amount of documentary data, usefully organized, much of it unseen since original (and often obscure) publication. Writings are by and about Capablanca; the minute details of his life and games proceed chronologically; the controversies of his career are especially well documented. The book has an index of games and positions, an index of openings, and a general index. Also found are 26 rare photographs on glossy plates.

5 out of 5 stars Chess books do not get any better than this.......2005-06-25

This book is basically a biography via the subject's own writings and papers. Winter does, in fact, include plenty of his own (excellent) prose, but the meat of the book is Capablanca's own writing, much of it new to me, and I've read quite a bit on Capa through the years.

Especially interesting are Capa's thoughts on contemporary players and his early game annotations when he was writing for various chess magazines early in his career. For example, he annotated every game of the epic Lasker-Schlechter match, and they are all included here.

Although Capa is infamous for writing less than virtually any other World Champion, he still penned quite a number of articles, all of them of interest, and all, or nearly all, of which are collected here.

Winter is known for being a stickler about documentation, so you will not find a lot of unfounded gossip or apochryphal stories or legend here. This is a refreshing dfference from the large majority of chess biographies, including other books on Capa. Capablanca's career is full of enough true mindboggling stories to need to make anything up.

This book is a splendid achievement by Winter, and I had a difficult time putting it down. I plan on going back to it again and again as a reference, and, of course, to play over the games which Capablanca had annotated.

    5 out of 5 stars Completely Outstanding.......2002-06-01

As a big fan of details and facts, Winter is always for me. He`s the best chess historian by far, and this may be his best book to date. Even if you`re not a serious Capablanca fan, this book will keep you entertained with those little special events that make life so interesting (like including a section of an article by Sergei Prokofiev about his playing in a simul against Capbablanca). I also didn`t know until reading the Capablanca writings from articles included in this book that the World Champion really did have a nice sense of humour. Engrossing, filled with facts, all attributions in order... but by no means is it dry. Quite the contrary, this will also touch on your emotions.

Certainly one of the best books I`ve ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Capablanca biography, with lots of games too!.......1999-12-09

Winter has researched an enormous amount of material on Capablanca, and documented his sources thoroughly. He has a commendable distaste for unsubstantiated anecdotes. It includes both significant biographical material as well as many fine games not usually found in the main game collections (which are highly recommended by the way), and often with Capa's own notes.

Winter has also unearthed some very interesting game annotations by Capa, including the Lasker-Schlechter match, a famous Spielmann loss to Tarrasch, a Janowski brilliancy, etc. There are also fascinating reports by Capa on tournaments such as his greatest victory, New York 1927, and the Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires, 1939, where Capa made the best score on top board.

The chapters on his World Championship negotiations and matches with both Lasker and Alekhine make fascinating reading.

There also clear B&W photos of Capa at all stages of life.

5 out of 5 stars IT WAS EXCELLENT.......1999-10-01

BRILLIANT. WELL WORTH THE MONEY. IT HAS HELPED ME TO IMPROVE MY CHESS ENORMOUSLY.

Among the library of investment books promising no-fail strategies for riches, Benjamin Graham's classic, The Intelligent Investor, offers no guarantees or gimmicks but overflows with the wisdom at the core of all good portfolio management.

The hallmark of Graham's philosophy is not profit maximization but loss minimization. In this respect, The Intelligent Investor is a book for true investors, not speculators or day traders. He provides, "in a form suitable for the laymen, guidance in adoption and execution of an investment policy" (1). This policy is inherently for the longer term and requires a commitment of effort. Where the speculator follows market trends, the investor uses discipline, research, and his analytical ability to make unpopular but sound investments in bargains relative to current asset value. Graham coaches the investor to develop a rational plan for buying stocks and bonds, and he argues that this plan must be a bulwark against emotional behavior that will always be tempting during abrupt bull and bear markets.

Since it was first published in 1949, Graham's investment guide has sold over a million copies and has been praised by such luminaries as Warren E. Buffet as "the best book on investing ever written." These accolades are well deserved. In its new form--with commentary on each chapter and extensive footnotes prepared by senior Money editor, Jason Zweig--the classic is now updated in light of changes in investment vehicles and market activities since 1972. What remains is a better book. Graham's sage advice, analytical guides, and cautionary tales are still valid for the contemporary investor, and Zweig's commentaries demonstrate the relevance of Graham's principles in light of 1990s and early twenty-first century market trends. --Patrick O'Kelley

    Book Description

The best book on investing ever written, this classic work offers sound and safe principles for investing – principles that have worked for more than the half century since the first edition was published. This revised edition features a new introduction, appendix and chapter updates.

Since its original publication in 1949, Benjamin Graham's book has remained the most respected guide to investing, due to his timeless philosophy of 'value investing', which helps protect investors against areas of possible substantial error and teaches them to develop long–term strategies with which they will be comfortable down the road.

    5 out of 5 stars Intelligent investor........2007-09-19

Anyone who chooses to comprehend this classic text will without a doubt expand their knowledge within the universe of value investment techniques. Moreover, in these times of muddled distinction between the investor and speculator, there is no better reason to buy this precious piece of Graham's intellectual genius than now. For myself, this book was truly the first necessary step to bring the perpetual pernicious chaos of what is conveniently termed speculating, to a more lucid order as I learned the true value of Graham's principles of value investing. We can all benefit to learn from this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Timeless .......2007-09-11

This is the best book I've read on investing and will remain the standard for value investing.

5 out of 5 stars Invest in this book, invest in yourself........2007-09-08

With more than one million copies sold and an endorsement on the cover by Warren Buffet, you know there has to be something to this book- and I think I know why. Simply because it is the first book ever to describe the emotional framework and analytical tools necessary for financial success for individual investors.

Probably the single best book on investing written for the lay-public and the stock market bible since its first appearance in 1949, it's a great resource, although it's quite a thick book and filled with detail- and probably not for anybody but the serious stock market investor. And if getting motivated to start investing is your problem, suggest The Sixty-Second Motivator. Good luck!

    5 out of 5 stars Ben Gragam's philosophy.......2007-08-18

I found that both Ben Graham's philosophy and Warren Buffett's philosophy are very similar to Taoism. If you are interested in this subject, you can read Warren Buffett and Tao Te Ching: A Modern Investor and an Age-Old Philosophy.

3 out of 5 stars Buy the orignal, not the Zweig version.......2007-07-11

As the title of this review indicates, do yourself a favour and buy the original Ben Graham version not this one with Zweig.

Let me start by saying that Warren Buffett had nothing to do with this book, the preface and appendix are extracts from the Financial Analysts Journal and transcripts of a 1984 talk at Columbia University.

The orignal Ben Graham material is mostly intact in each chapter. It is not full of calculations, so it is not difficult to read, but it is a slow and deliberate building of an argument on investing. As such people who are interested in the book for its investment advice will find it logical and sensible. Zwieg however has decided that his own footnotes are far more valuable than Graham's so he has moved Graham's footnotes to the appendix and put his notes under the original text - which is why I say that the chapters are "mostly intact", but not completely.

After each of Graham's chapters, Zweig has included a commentary chapter of his own. These chapters and his footnotes will give you the feeling that "a high school science student was commenting on the PhD work of a professor". The commentary is a weak summary, mostly devoid of any insight and sometimes making statements about what Graham "would have said", which is nothing short of egregious.

Overall, I give Graham's original chapters five stars and Zweig's additions one star, resulting in an average of 3 stars.

This book is a clear example of someone jumping on the bandwagon and trying to associate himself with prominent people like Graham and Buffett. So do yourself a favour and buy the original Graham version, that way you won't feel like Zweig suckered you into buying his book, using Graham's name.

    Book Description

The classic bestseller by Benjamin Graham, perhaps the greatest investment advisor of the 20th century, The Intelligent Investor has taught and inspired hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Since its original publication in 1949, Benjamin Graham's book has remained the most respected guide to investing, due to his timeless philosophy of "value investing," which helps protect investors against the areas of possible substantial error and teaches them to develop long-term strategies with which they will be comfortable down the road.

Over the years, market developments have borne out the wisdom of Benjamin Graham's basic policies. Here he takes account of both the defensive and the enterprising investor, outlining the principles of stock selection for each, and stressing the advantages of a simple portfolio policy. Among the book's special features are the use of numerous comparisons of pairs of common stocks to bring out their elements of strength and weakness and the construction of investment portfolios designed to meet specific requirements of quality and price attractiveness.

The Intelligent Investor may be the most important book you will ever read on making your investments a success.

"The Intelligent Investor is the best book ever written for the stockholder," says author and investment counselor John Train. Benjamin Graham's classic work offers sound and safe principles for investing-principles that have worked for more than forty years since the first edition was published. "Graham ranks as this century's (and perhaps history's) most important thinker on applied portfolio investment." -- John Train, author of The Money Masters

5 out of 5 stars Good Book on Value Investing and Market Psychology.......2007-05-16

This book will deliver a theory on investing, which is no doubt well known, but rarely practiced, while giving you an insight into the psychology of the market.

It begins via explaining the difference between speculations and investing, and outline what profits you can realistically expect to make in bonds, preferred and commons stocks.

It then proceeds into inflation, and explains how an investments in the stock market will provides protection against it. Graham provides a short history lesson on the stock market over the last 100 years and how and why it has fluctuated.

The book then introduce a very important subject Portfolio Policy and recommends the amount an individual should diversify between graham two investment mediums, Bonds and Stocks, and will outline the amount one should hold in each medium with consideration to his/her financial position, what he/she is trying to achieve, and when fund should be rotated between the 2 mediums.

The book then provide a Introduction to investment funds, seeking advice, security analysis, Earnings, Stock Selection, Convertible Issues and warrants, and will compare companies with case studies.

The final chapter of the book titled `Margin of Safety' is a must read and worth the books purchase price alone.

The book will NOT provide an in depth discussion of security analysis, and provides little insight into practicing fundamental analysis and financial statement's. For an understanding of these concepts read Security Analysis also by Benjamin Graham.

5 out of 5 stars Buffett's most favorite investment book.......2007-05-14

Buffett consider this book the best ever written about investment. He wrote the preface for the book. In the preface, he said if we learn two things from the book, first take advantage of Mr. Market (As stock market prices go up and down, we should buy good company stocks with good discounts, and sell to take profits when prices gone too high) and second have Margin of Safety (One should only buy a stock with significant discount to have room for ones valuation error on the stock), he or she should do well in the stock market.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Classic; Investor's Bible!.......2007-02-28

Warrent Buffet learnt from Benjamin Graham. That's all one needs to say.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on investing.......2007-01-05

I concur with Ben Graham's star pupil, Warren Buffett, that this is the best book on investing ever made. Although Mr. Buffett modified the approach, the basic ideas pioneered by Mr. Graham such as "margin of safety" and viewing common stocks as shares in a business rather than ticker symbols are still as important as ever.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Advice From The Dean of Wall Street.......2006-11-10

No serious investor should attempt to navigate the rough seas of stock selection without spending a good deal of quality time with the Dean of Wall Street himself. This is the book that inspired a young Warren Buffett to travel all the way to Columbia University to study under the father of security analysis, Benjamin Graham.

Don't look for secret formulas, one hit wonders, or get-rich-quick schemes. You won't find them in this book. But if a common sense approach to analyzing the prospects of a particular company appeals to your style of value investing, then the similarities end here.

The dean takes you through a thorough analysis of companies in case study after case study to illustrate the various shenanigans used by unwitting or unscrupulous companies to boost their reported earnings for the purpose of seducing an uneducated investing public to risk it's capital on smoke and mirrors. With practical demonstrations he shows the reader how to interpret financial statements such that only undervalued companies with long-term prospects are considered worthy of investment.

The "Margin of Safety" concept is thoroughly explained with plenty of discussion on why it's important, along with numerous other concepts pioneered by Graham. There are those who claim the information contained in this book is outdated and no longer relevant in today's market. Those are the same people who criticized Warren Buffett when he refused to take part in the tech bubble in the late 90's. They're also the same people who were decimated by the "new economy" stocks at the turn of the century. All while Buffett continued to snap up "old economy" stocks that propelled Berkshire Hathaway to higher highs when the bubble finally burst.

Many of the world's greatest investors studied under the watchful eye of Benjamin Graham. Investors such as Warren Buffet, Bill Ruane, Tom Knapp, and Walter Schloss, to name a few, went on to build extraordinary fortunes after studying under Graham. They are now permanent residents of Graham-and-Doddsville.

Don't pass up this timeless classic. Its teachings are more relevant today than ever before. Its principals have never been more sound. The reason the world's greatest investors are value investors is because value investing works. It always has, and unless someone changes the laws of economics, it probably always will.
