Book Description
A lively history of gangsters in American film and an insightful look at why we love them.
The gangster, like the gunslinger, is a classic American character--and the gangster movie, like the Western, is one of the American cinema's enduring film genres. From Scarface to White Heat, from The Godfather to The Usual Suspects, from Once Upon a Time in America to Road to Perdition, gangland on the screen remains as popular as ever.
In Bullets over Hollywood, film scholar John McCarty traces the history of mob flicks and reveals why the films are so beloved by Americans. As McCarty demonstrates, the themes, characters, landscapes, stories--the overall iconography--of the gangster genre have proven resilient enough to be updated, reshaped, and expanded upon to connect with even today's young audiences. Packed with fascinating behind-the-scenes anecdotes and information about real-life hoods and their cinematic alter egos, insightful analysis, and a solid historical perspective, Bullets over Hollywood will be the definitive book on the gangster movie for years to come.

A copiously informative history of the "mob movie".......2004-09-16
Bullets Over Hollywood: The American Gangster Picture From The Silents To "The Sopranos" by John McCarty (Adjunct Professor of Cinema, Department of Theatre, SUNY, Albany, New York) is an inherently fascinating and copiously informative history of the "mob movie", as it comparatively surveys archetypal criminal stereotypes from the earliest days of silent movie story telling down to the "made for TV" gangland series. Bullets Over Hollywood is replete with anecdotal "behind the scenes" stories and even goes into the minds of the audiences for this enduringly popular genre of film entertainment. The impact of movie gangsters on popular culture has always been immense and immediate from slang to clothing to mannerisms, to career choices. Bullets Over Hollywood is informed, informative (and, enhanced with a photo inserts showcasing some of the greatest moments of mob movies) and a filmography dating back to 1915), and strongly recommended reading for students of American film history and American popular culture.

Product Description
The world's premier method for learning modern plectrum style guitar, time-tested and proven successful in building the theoretic and technical foundation needed to play in any style. All seven grades of this method are written in standard notation only to encourage better sight reading. In Grade 1, the student guitarist will learn to play solos, duets, scales, and chords in the keys of C, A minor, G and E minor. Even in Grade 1, the student is already exposed to the chord/melody concept of guitar performance. A supplementary study book entitled Grade 1 Studies, two different play-along CD recordings (pop and traditional), and a VHS or DVD video are available. The companion recordings feature Tommy Flint and William Bay playing in split-track format, with the solo parts performed on the right channel, and the accompaniment or second duet parts played on the left. The student can play along with the full recording, or tune out either channel and play the missing part.

For what it's focused on - it's pretty good.......2007-03-25
I disagree with some reviewers who feel this is just old fashioned - well it is old fashioned as it was first written in 1946 - but for what it does, teach you to play music on guitar, it's OK. There's very few other books that do that well. But these Mel Bay books are so cheap, they are worth it just for the music reading practice. It's not a book for starting to play guitar, it's a book to help you read music on guitar. I'll give it 5 as it's such good value for money and forcing you to learn music - something you need to do sometime before you get real good - or risk looking a moron in front of other musicians who've taken the time out to learn standard notation.
Why read? Well it's a bit like being able to speak a language but not be able to read and write it. TAB is specific for guitarists and bass players - if you'll ever need to communicate your musical ideas to any other players you'll need standard notation. And if you want to be a pro, we shouldn't even be having this discussion - it isn't an option.
There's also Mel Bay's newer, William Bay written series of 5 books based on these called Mastering the Guitar. These have a newer feel. But they are very similar.
Solid Instruction for the Hungry Student.......2007-01-25
I am a "self-taught" guitarist of over 30 years. Last year I decided to get serious about guitar and put some order around all the stuff I've picked up over the years. I can't count the number of instructional "stuff" I've purchased over the years. I wish I would have found this text earlier. I would have saved myself lots of money and frustration! If you want to know how music theory relates to your fretboard and *really* be able to play any kind of music, this is the book for you. If you want a quick answer or a formula for playing rifts to impress your friends, you probably won't like it. This book is for someone who sincerely wants to work toward mastering the instrument. The course is not a destination, but rather the beginning of a journey that will bring you hours of enjoyment as you discover how music theory is related to the fretboard. For best results, find a good instructor with a sense of humor to help you; it's a good investment.
Outdated, painfully boring, deficient in modern guitar techniques.......2006-07-27
This book has sold millions of copies since it was first printed in 1948 (read the copyright inside the book). That's the problem. It was a "modern method" back in 1948 but it's terribly out-of-date today. Music in general has changed dramaticlly since 1948. There was no such thing as rock n' roll in 1948, no Bob Dylan, no Elvis Presely, not even any Beatles. Educational material relied on classical music written on piano. That's how this book appears to have been written. Like Mel Bay adapted one of its piano methods to use for guitar.
The book's approach to technique relies exculsively on flatpicking (where one holds a pick). Which is what the cowboys on the range did as they sat around campfire back in 1948. The songs are mostly country and western fiddle tunes like Home On The Range (page 39) and Carry Me Back to Old Virginny (page 40). There is no contemporary pop/rock like Aaron Stang's 21st Century Guitar Method book 1 or Hal Leonard's Guitar Method books, which contain many pop/rock pieces for students to have fun with and get excited about. That's just it. This book is one of the most boring method books in print. Each and every time I use this book (I teach guitar) my students revolt like prison inmates.
Although there is one Sor classical guitar piece, it is to be played with a flatpick, not played with the fingers like a classical guitar piece is supposed to be played. There are no fingerstyle pieces in this book or book 2 in the series (not sure about the rest in the series as I've avoided using them). I highly recommend the Mel Bay "Class Guitar Method" book 1 by William Bay instead of this one. The Class Guitar Method has a nice variety.
This book does have it's strengths which is why it has sold so many copies. It shows primary chords in the key you're studying before you begin to play the practice exercise. And it shows the associated major or minor scale the piece is based on. It requires you to really work on your sight reading as there is no TAB (tablature). But forcing people to sight read in these modern times (2006, not 1948) without TAB leads to student grumbling, followed by kiddie tantrums (which is embarrassing when they're adults), then outright hostility toward their mean guitar teacher.
The final problem I have with this book is it doesn't say anywhere what the recommended age requirement is for those thinking about purchasing it. I would say a person should be at least 16 or 17. It's really best for adult-aged, more mature, students that don't want TAB (I've yet to come accross one), doesn't care about learning contemporary songs and techniques, and prefers a method book that tests their sight reading skills example after example, lesson after lesson, and week after week, month after month. ad nauseam. If that's you, this book is for you.
If you're are an adult, or young adult in middle or high school, I highly recommend Jerry Snyder's "Guitar School" book 1 over this one as Guitar School is up-to-date and very contemporary with every technique and guitar style today's guitarist uses written out in TAB and demonstrated on the CD. But if you're sticking with Mel Bay, get Mel Bay's Class Guitar Method, which I really like, over this one.
Not exactly modern.......2006-05-13
I got this book after having previously purchased Ralph Denyer's Guitar Handbook. This book is most certainly not about the modern guitar you might be thinking about if you're learning to play The Beatles, Metallica, U2, Aerosmith, or any rock or hard rock bands from the last fifty plus years.
This book's version of "modern" guitar seems to be talking about the semi-classical/folk tunes that a young guitar player might be interested if they were growing up around 1920 or 1930.
This isn't to say that the book has nothing positive to offer. It is very well laid out and does introduce concepts about scales and chords in a way that is not too quick for the beginner. It is a good book, but it may be a little old, and therefore, not what you're looking for.
Mel Bays Modern Guitar Method Grade 1.......2006-03-20
I am a professional musician, and I teach guitar part time. I believe that this is the best introductory book that I have seen for anyone who wants to learn to play a guitar. It also teaches elementary music theory too, which is necessary where you intend to play guitar reading music, or playing by ear. It's excellent, and I give it a top rating.

Book Description
The First Management Classic of the New Millennium!
A bold experiment is taking place these days, as leading-edge companies turn upside down the management paradigm that has dominated corporate thinking for more than one hundred years. Southwest Airlines is perhaps the most visible practitioner, soaring through economic downturns while its competitors slash their budgets and order massive layoffs, but you can find other pioneers of the new approach in almost every industry and market niche. Their secret: a culture of ownership that allows them to tap into the most underutilized resource in business today–namely, the enthusiasm, intelligence, and creativity of working people everywhere.
No one knows more about building a culture of ownership than CEO Jack Stack, who’s been working on one for the past twenty years with his colleagues at SRC Holdings Corporation (formerly Springfield ReManufacturing Corporation). Along the way, they’ve turned their company into what Business Week has called a “management Mecca,” attracting thousands of people representing hundreds of businesses to SRC’s home in Springfield, Missouri. There the visitors learn how to incorporate the ideals and values of SRC’s remarkable corporate culture into their own organizations–and then they go back and do it.
Now, in A Stake in the Outcome, Stack offers a master class on creating a culture of ownership, presenting the hard-won lessons of his own twenty-year journey and explaining what it really takes to build for long-term success. The pioneer of “open-book management” (described in the best-selling classic The Great Game of Business), Stack and twelve other managers began their journey in 1982, when they purchased their factory from its struggling parent company. SRC grew 15 percent a year, while adding almost a thousand new jobs, and the company’s stock price rocketed from 10 cents to $81.60 per share. In the process, Stack discovered that long-term success required constant innovation–and that building a culture of ownership involved much more than paying bonuses, handing out stock options, or setting up an employee stock ownership plan.
In a successful ownership culture, every employee had to take the fate of the company as personally as an individual owner would. Achieving that level of commitment was extraordinarily difficult, but Stack realized that the payoff would be enormous: a company that was consistently able to outperform the market.
A Stake in the Outcome isn’t about theory–it’s about practice. Stack draws from his own successes and failures at SRC to show how any company can teach its employees to think and act like owners, including how to implement an effective equity-sharing program, how to promote continuous learning at every level of the organization, how to fire up employees’ competitive juices, how to broaden the concept of leadership and delegate responsibility for the business, and how to build a workforce that is fast on its feet and ready to take advantage of every opportunity. You’ll also learn about other companies that have succeeded in building cultures of ownership–and the lessons they can teach the rest of us.
Written in Jack Stack’s straightforward, witty, no-beating-around-the-bush style, A Stake in the Outcome is like having a one-on-one session with a master entrepreneur and business innovator. It shows managers and executives of companies both large and small how to build a ferociously motivated workforce that is energized and committed to meeting and overcoming the most daunting challenges a company can face.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Much Better than The Great Game of Business.......2005-07-02
I found the Great Game of Business to be uninformative.
However, A Stake in the Outcome made up for it! If you've ever considered becoming an entrepreneur, READ THIS BOOK!
A great story, but with limited take-aways.......2004-03-26
While this book does go into details about the author's amazing success with his company, SRC, the advice is tailored to senior executives who are in the position of founding or leading young companies. The author candidly admits that personal experience in leading a company is the only real way to learn, because each company has its own unique challenges, and because situations look quite different in the heat of a tense moment, rather than in the comfort of a book. Nonetheless, this book does give the reader plenty of areas to think more about, and tells a great story in the process.
Cold, hard, ruthless, and magnificent!.......2003-04-21
A lot of "business management" books are all fluff; not here.
There is not one wasted word in this wonderful book, which should be mandatory reading in every business in America.
Inadvertantly, Stack addressed the issue of a "culture of ownership" just in time to face a generational shift in the work force.
"Theory X" worked for the veterans of WWII; "Theory Y" worked, to a degree, for the Baby Boomers.
"Generation X," and "Generation Y," see the cultural climate of business in an entirely different light; yet, they must find a voice in working with American business, for the good of all.
Incredibly distrustful of authority, and poorly served by the education system they have left, something new is needed to bring order out of the chaos of their perceptions.
If you are looking for silver bullets, look no further than Stack's books (and Ricardo Semler's "Maverick").
In "The Great Game of Business," Stack discussed the restructuring of Sprinfield Remanfacturing, starting with a debt/equity ratio of 89 to 1.
Success brought a new, painful awareness of two basic issues: one, growth leads to conflict arising, and must be resolved; and two, businesses do not scale very well.
A larger business requires a qualitatively different framework to resolve conflicts in; the price of the necessary knowledge is very high, indeed.
Good news!
Stack and the people at SRC Holdings Corporation - the name should give you a hint of the magnitude of change required - have done the heavy lifting for you!
The best accompaniment you can have as you try to apply his principles is a good primer on economic value added (EVA) accounting.
Incidentally, Chapter 10, "Crossing the Great Divide," includes a great story about "The Secret of the Chinese Firecracker Factory," where the issue of scaling the business model is addressed following an insight gained from the manufacturing process of Chinese firecrackers.
The same insight was expressed in Chapter 15 of "Maverick," by Ricardo Semler. Called "Divide and Prosper," Semler addresses the issue of the appropriate scale and structure of the business in the same light as Stack. Semler also addressed a good many of the issues Stack faced from an invaluable perspective, particularly management structure (see Chapter 21 of "Maverick.")
Stack has given one and all an invaluable guide to The Next Step after Open Books; keep it close to hand, give it to all of your people, and let people who wonder about "who moved their cheese," keep wondering!
A good story, instructive.......2002-06-17
Jack Stack has become well-known in some circles as the poster boy of open book management. He and his colleagues at SRC (Springfield Remanufacturing Corporation) have built a company and set of business practices (Great Game of Business) around the concept of sharing numbers with your employees. Yes, it's more than just sharing numbers, it's empowering the employees to be true team members, enabling them to take personal and collective actions to influence the numbers and to share in the profits.
Open book management is a great concept that has made a significant difference for a lot of companies, and even the U. S. Coast Guard. Stack presented the concept in his 1992 book, "The Great Game of Business" (Currency Doubleday). That book was a valuable how-to package.
"A Stake in the Outcome" is more of the story of the transformation of a remanufacturing plant owned by a large corporation into a thriving independent business. In the midst of the text, the reader will find some advice, some brief case studies of other companies, and some experience descriptions that may be instructive. But, when it all shakes out, this is the story of the growth of a business. It's an historical review with plenty of detail. It's Jack Stack's story.
If you're looking for an instruction book of how to build an employee-centered open book management company, this isn't it. If you're looking for an instructive report of what one company went through, from the leader's perspective, this book fits that description. It's Jack Stack's book, even though Bo Burlingham, an editor-at-large of Inc. Magazine, is shown as co-author. Burlingham's photo doesn't appear on the dust jacket, just Stack's.
Reading the book is like listening to Stack telling his story, with the emotion, the ego, the pride, and the rough-and-tumble. It would be interesting to hear this story shared by others. You can gain that experience by visiting SRC in Springfield, Missouri, but you can't get it from this book.
More Compelling Stuff From Jack Stack.......2002-05-22
What could Jack Stack and Bo Burlingham come up with to match the excitement of The Great Game of Business? Perhaps nothing, but they've come pretty close with A Stake in the Outcome, a continuation of the remarkable story of SRC and its traiblazing initiatives in Open Book Management, employee ownership and organization-wide involvement. The first portion of the book is a recounting of the earliest days of SRC, a story that will be very familiar to readers of the earlier Stack book. But the reading quickly becomes compelling as he continues the story and builds the irrefutable case for equity ownership throughout an organization. Jack Stack is a consummate teacher: experienced, entertaining, inspiring and entirely logical. In this work, he demonstrates once again that "he knows his numbers." For fans and pratitioners of Open Book Management, or those intrigued by the potential behind employee ownership, this is an important new book.
