Customer Reviews:
for the dumbass who likes the movie but doesn't like the screenpaly.......2006-08-15
Let me get this straight, you bought this cause you thought something called the Boogie nights screenplay was a novel or something other than the actual screenplay. you stupid idiot, who's fault is that? instead of realizing your ignorance you further prove how ignorant you are by saying you love the movie and that you don't like that he said she said [...] well guess what stupid, thats what movies are. here's an idea kill yourself. oh, by the way the sceenplay is obviously good if you liked the film, if not don't expect anything here that you didn't see in the film.
BOOGIE NIGHTS * * * *.......2002-11-06
Paul Thomas Anderson's "BOOGIE NIGHTS" is a sprawling masterpiece concerning many things. The subjects range from the 70s porn industry, to the journey from late teens to early manhood, from drugs to celebrity, from family to friendship. It's about lost souls in search of solace and young disenfranchized in search of a home. Mark Wahlberg (yes, Markey Mark) stars as Eddie Adams, the Torrance youth with a 13-inch...TALENT...who runs from his mother's house and into the arms of Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds in his Oscar-nominated--and robbed--performance), the finest director in the porn industry in 1977 California. What Eddie finds at Jack's fine home in the San Fernando Valley is an oasis on the outskirts of the real world, a wonderland of new experiences and hope-filled dreams, where celebrity is literally around the corner. He also finds a surrogate family of new friends: there's Buck (Don Cheadle) and Becky Barnett (Nicole Ari Parker), the resident black couple, and Buck's destined wife Jessie St. Vincent (Melora Walters of "HARD EIGHT" and "MAGNOLIA"). There's Scotty J (Philip Seymour Hoffman, fresh off Anderson's debut feature, "HARD EIGHT", later in both "MAGNOLIA" and as the villain in Anderson's 4th feature "PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE"), the enthralled young guy who "helps on some of the films" and Kurt Longjohn (Ricky Jay), the cameraman who "wants to give each picture its own look". There's Rollergirl (Heather Graham), who "never takes her skates off...NEVER". There's Little Bill (William H. Macy), the depressed AD whose wife (real porn star Nina Hartley) abuses him in public, and has sex with everyone around. There's The Colonel (the late Robert Ridgely; he had a bit part in "HARD EIGHT") who finances the films. There's Floyd Gondolli (Philip Baker Hall, from Anderson's "HARD EIGHT), who watches everything from behind the scenes and seems to pull the strings for everyone. There's Reed Rothchild (John C. Reilly, also from "HARD EIGHT") who becomes Eddie's best friend as he makes the transition from Eddie Adams to new hot porn star DIRK DIGGLER). There's Amber Waves (Julianne Moore, who would become, along with many of these actors, part of the cast of Anderson's follow-up "MAGNOLIA"), the mother figure to Dirk. We even meet Maurice t.t. Rodriguez (Luis Guzman, of "MAGNOLIA" and "PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE"), the Puerto Rican club owner who hangs out with the cast and crew. And finally Jack, of course. This ensemble cast of "NASHVILLE" size and ability is a remarkable group that works together like they've known each other all their lives -- many have. Anderson is a writer-director to watch, as he takes a pocket full of style and an unusual script structure and lays out a sprawling epic of unimaginable ambition and limitless talent. It's quite a masterwork. The screenplay to "BOOGIE NIGHTS", though it contains much camera description and is more technical than the average "screenplay" (a script tells a story of a movie, like a novel does), is one not to miss. Anderson's scripts for "HARD EIGHT" and "MAGNOLIA" are just the same...I'm sure the soon to be released "PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE" will carry on the tradition. This is great.
an engaging screenplay.......2000-08-23
i think the problem with *most* of these reviews is that the reviewers are bullheaded or egotistical. this isn't a novel, it's a screenplay/script, as the title reads. in fact: it's one of the best screenplays I'VE ever read and i've read thousands (literally). the story is well developed, as are the characters, and the dialogue is hilarious. recommended for paul anderson fans or boogie nights fans. not for book readers, necessarily. my only regret is that the deleted scenes that are available on both dvd versions weren't included, because they helped showcase the cast's amazing talent for improvisation, and allowed the characters to expand even further.
Vastly overlooked for its real value.......2000-08-05
This movie is not just about the porno business. It is about the 1970s, from bellbottoms to disco and how a group of individuals who love sex but come from dysfunctional families find community with each other. It touches on how these people were caught up in substance abuse and had trouble raising their own families. It also touches on how the financial and business sectors frowned on or discriminated against them.
What? Only 3 stars after how great the movie is?.......2000-07-07
The VHS is a valued part of my vid collection and I don't regret buying for a microsecond. But as for this book, I was expecting a novelization and didn't get it. This is a SCREENPLAY, and I'm not into screenplays. I just can't get into a story that's all he said--she said. So maybe I'm being unfair with the 3 lousy stars when I should have done more research before I bought--"...an educated consumer..." yadda-yadda. Which makes it my fault, I suppose, not Paul Thomas Anderson's. So if a NOVEL is what you're looking for, I don't think there is one of this movie. Maybe Anderson should write one--if he does, he can guarantee selling a copy to me. It's a great story.

Book Description
With his essays on jazz for a variety of publications, including The Atlantic, 7 Days, and The Village Voice, Francis Davis has established himself as a major voice in jazz criticism. In the Moment, his first collection, published in 1986, won praise from both the jazz and general press. down
beat called it "a collection as useful to future generations for how it captures this moment in musical evolution as for how it alters our vision now." The New York Times Book Review compared it to "a well-blown solo."
In Outcats, Davis presents a new series of critical essays, artist profiles, and pieces that skillfully combine both modes. In the 1950s, Paul Knopf, a now forgotten and even then obscure pianist, coined the word "outcat" to describe himself as "an outcast and a far-out cat combined." In
using a word originally meant to convey jubilant defiance, Davis recognizes its undertones of alienation and cultural exile. Some of his subjects are outcats because of their politics, drug problems, or musical iconoclasm. But Davis defines all jazz performers--"including the most famous,
influential, and housebroken"--as outcats, by virtue of the scant recognition given them by contemporary society.
Like In the Moment, Outcats is an indispensible guide to the best in recent and reissued jazz. Davis illuminates the unusual aspects of famous performers--Duke Ellington composing an opera, for example, or Miles Davis talking about his move into pop--while deftly analyzing their music. His
subjects range from the mainstream to the experimental, from the familiar to the forgotten; from Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, and Wynton Marsalis to Cecil Taylor, John Zorn, and Sun Ra. Whether challenging the portrayal of Charlie Parker in Bird or admitting to his own fondness for the rock
singer Bobby Darin, Davis writes with wit, sensitivity, and candor. As Pauline Kael describes him, "He gets at what he responds to and why--you feel you're reading an honest man."
Customer Reviews:
Great essays on the fundamentals of jazz.......2004-06-02
Regardless of your familiarity with jazz history, its people or its forms, this collection of essays is great for the fan or the first time listener interested in learning more. Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Gil Evans, and Lester Young get scholarly appreciations, but so do Sun Ra, Henry Threadgill, Steve Lacy, and -- really showing the author's capacity for inclusiveness -- Bobby Darin, which isn't as farfetched as it seems. Essays are grouped into composers, instrumentalists, and vocalists, with a fourth section devoted to historical essays, encouraging the interested reader to explore more of a particular style. Davis assumes the reader will know a little about jazz, but his enthusiasm for his subject matter makes this book lively reading about America's most original musical form.

Customer Reviews:
Joe Girard takes the cake.......2006-07-24
He's literally the World's Greatest Salesman, who has actually been in the field and achieved great accomplishments in sales himself, vs other gurus who simply do great at selling their books & audiobooks. He's the best, period, and he shares his knowledge with you in this book.
worth its while........2006-03-09
This book helped me understand other methods of closing sales. I was able to relate because I was in auto sales in the past. I think this book should be in every auto salesmans possession. Im no longer in auto sales but in takeaway sales. This book doesn't touch base on that type of sale. I still recommend to anyone in general sales.
First-hand advice on under-handed sales gimmicks..........2005-12-17
Joe Girard has an impressive record as a salesman, a fact to which the reader is treated at regular and frequent intervals throughout the book. Self-aggrandizement notwithstanding, this book left me quite convinced that car salesmen have earned every bit of their sleazy reputations.
I suppose that if you sell products for a living, there are some useful (although hardly novel) techniques highlighted in this work. That said, I'm not sure how Girard draws a distinction between himself and the myriad other "super-salesmen" authors on the market today...I certainly couldn't.
Beyond the general feel of the author's style and content, there are other cautionaries to relay. For instance, there is virtually no use in reading this book if you sell expertise or advisory services of any kind. Likewise, if you're a stickler for principle-based selling, this might not been the read for you.
To state the matter plainly, this book is replete with petty dishonesties that are pawned off on the reader as "techniques" of one variety or another. Finally, the reader should note that Girard's text presupposes a fairly unsophisticated buyer, so if that doesn't match your clientele, then you might want to keep browsing the bookshelves. In sum, if you're not selling products in a high-pressure, high-volume environment, there's nothing here particularly new or appealing from Mister Girard. This reviewer strongly recommends that you find another seller...
Awesome Book.......2005-08-02
This book Increased My Sales in my Business by 300% within 1 month. This book is a must for any serious business Person.
enjoyable yarn.......2004-10-23
I bought this book and an audio tape arrived so straight away you have some insight into me. The tape is good quality and a great listen. However if you are looking for the elusive silver bullet prehaps you need to look elsewhere, prehaps into yourself.
The foundation of this tape is that success in sales stems from personal integerity projected from you onto the prospect.Prehaps i'm naive but just refering to a customer as a prospect somehow casts a shaddow of doubt on the notion of integerity.
All in all if you are interested in a career in sales this is worth the price and if you are already a soul dead professional prehaps you might just glean some iota of truth from the ideal that joe expounds but just dosen't quite get.
I gave it four stars because three seemed too low.Certain aspects deserve five star plus
Please excuse spellings.
Book Description
America's #1 salesman, the legendary Ralph R. Roberts, is back with a recipe for success that no salesperson, novice or veteran, can afford to be without. If you've already read Walk Like a Giant, Sell Like a Madman, you're ready for more of this super-salesman's powerful, practical advice. If you haven't, you can make up for lost time by studying this new book.
More than perhaps any other human on the planet, Ralph Roberts lives, eats, and breathes selling. Dubbed "America's scariest salesman" by Time for his accomplishments, which include selling over six hundredhouses per year, fifty times more than the average real estate agent, Ralph is in great demand as a speaker and seminar leader. So extensive were his out-of-town speaking engagements that his own staff spoke up and said, "Why don't you stay home and teach us a thing or two?" He immediately began series of popular weekly sales seminars for his employees, on which 52 Weeks of Sales Success is based.
Ralph now offers the same sales-generating wisdom and closing tools to everyone trying to reach his or her full potential. He reveals strategies to meet the turn-of-the-century sales environment head-on:
- Spot business opportunities where your competition doesn't.
- Learn tips for breaking the sales slump.
- Know how to get the most out of your past clients--and when to "fire" a customer.
- Acquire surefire methods to supercharge your networking efforts.
- Learn the keys to marketing a home-based business.
- Design outlines for developing your daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly success checklists.
In addition, Ralph presents the strategies and techniques of other sales superstars from many different industries, including advertising, investment, auto, home decorating, home-based business, audio-visual production, Internet service, insurance, travel, and mortgage brokering, to name just a few.
The strategies Ralph imparts in 52 Weeks of Sales Success will set you apart from every other salesperson. You'll learn how to look for and listen to what people want and try and find in for them; how to identify the true decision maker in the family in order to expedite closings; most important, you'll learn Ralph's technique for making an impression. It's all in this book, packed with infectious enthusiasm, wonderful personal stories about his own goal-setting and achievements, and down-home wisdom about setting priorities.
Ralph's message can get you incredible results. Aimed straight at the problems of entrepreneurial salespeople, Ralph's methods will help you:
- Conquer your fears of selling!
- Eliminate nonproductive habits!
- Get to the point of closing fate!
- Walk away with more sales than ever before!
- Close every deal!

"...Sell Like a Madman" revisited.......2001-02-07
I read Ralph Roberts' previous book, "Walk Like a Giant, Sell Like A Madman" prior to reading this one. I found the information much the same, but organized differently.
Taken on a week-by-week basis as Mr. Roberts recommends, it could be a useful guide for your business. It's a basic reminder to us that it's the little things that count with our existing and future customers.
It's the little things that count........2000-11-30
I sold Real Estate in the Detroit Metro area back in 1978, it was a tough market back then, left Real Estate for an Engineering position after two years. I have worked for this company that follows every business fad that comes along. Seven years ago we re-engineered and we Engineers had to be jacks and/or jills of all professions (Marketing, Accounting, Engineering, Administration etc....). At first many of us were scared and afraid to sell or market anything. It had been 20 years since I sold Real Estate but I looked at my old selling manuals and nothing seemed to help. I read about Ralph Roberts in a local paper here in Macomb County and went right to his office and purchased his book. This book has helped me sell over a Million dollars worth of Product and I am the No. # 1 Salesperson for our Company. This book is not only about about selling Real Estate but about preparing and being mentally ready to make sales, I've fallen in love with selling again. Thank You Ralph - Someday I would like to meet you and buy your lunch.
Great Reminder!.......2000-08-03
Although this information can be fairly obvious - it is often overlooked. This quick and easy reference can be thumbed through in order to gain new a new approach regularly. Doing the same thing day in and day out makes you very regimeneted but this book helps the creative juices to flow.
not helpful to me.......2000-04-28
I'm a new agent and I don't think this book is very helpful. The information in it is pretty obvious and not specific enough to help me. I think the book is a waste of money.
Good Book.......2000-01-26
Good book. I had alread read Sell like a madman by same author and was concerned that this would cover the same info. It had new info and was very easy to read. With 52 chapters I'm planning on reviewing 1 chapter in each of my weekly sales meetings for a year.
