Good Read.......2007-02-23
I totally enjoyed reading the short biographies of the various filmmakers, documentarians, and producers. It was like reading many short stories. I would say if you have any interest in black film making or African American history this book is a worthy read.
The importance of Black cinema.......2000-12-30
Dr. Yearwood is a well-known figure in the area of black film criticism and studies. He's goal is for the rest of the world to recognize the aesthetic values of black film and black culture. I've had him for a professor twice so far and found the depth of his knowledge on film and culture to be staggering.

This should be your first Pedal steel book.......2007-01-19
Pedal steel guitar is one of the most beautiful sounding instruments, but also one of the hardest to learn. This book helps you get started on a very complex instrument. I was amazed how quickly I was making good sounding music. I highly recommend this book for anyone starting out on pedal steel.
Classic and thorough book about the pedal steel guitar.......2006-07-25
This book is an excellent introduction and guide for anyone who is interested in learning about the pedal steel guitar.Although it is now somewhat dated,it still contains a vast amount of useful knowledge about this unusual instrument. In addition to providing a brief history of the instrument,it includes some minimal instruction, maintenance tips, choosing an instrument, and a wealth of other topics. It also offers info about the different players of the instrument, their tunings(copedants) and lots of photos. The pedal steel guitar is indeed a curious instrument and this book walks you through step by step to help you understand what it's all about.
Practically every steel player has read it or knows about it.
Excellent.......2006-03-15
Although written 30 years ago, this book is still very timely and informative. I would recommend it very highly for the person who wishes to learn to play the pedal steel guitar. It can also be very useful for the student who has started to play but has not reached the level he/she wishes.
A MUST HAVE RESOURCE!!!!!!!!.......2006-02-17
This is the 2nd copy of this book that I have purchased. The first copy was purchased when the book was 1st released and this new copy is to replace the original which I "loaned" to a student. Now I have the examples on CD instead of that little floppy record that came with the 1st copy! LOL
Anyone wanting to get started learning how to play pedal steel should have this book and read it cover to cover, again and again. Just about the 1st work on this subject and still one of the best ever written, thanks Winnie.
Best Introduction to Pedal Steel.......2000-03-13
There is nothing that compares with this book. It explains how the instrument works, teaches you how to play it, and introduces the reader to the culture of steel guitarists. Plenty of old pictures of the great players, and an appendix of their tunings (as of 1975!). I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Just what you need..........2007-05-07
..to build your first Lap Steel. The book is well laid out, clear, and well suited to a beginners approach. I had never done any musical woodworking projects, and this book (Along with the guidance of some skilled woodworking friends) walked me comfortably through the steps to completing a good looking and good sounding lap steel. Very rewarding purchase. Can't recommend it enough.
It's ALL in this one book........2004-04-22
As with is other book, Martin Koch tells you ALL you need to know to build a beautiful instrument.
From building 2 types of lap steel's from A to Z, to making the case and even making your own pickups, this book as it all.
This is my second book by Martin Koch and let me just say that his books are a gold mine of information from cover to cover.
Martin Koch also as a website that compliments his books where you can ask questions, see other instruments people have built and there are also good tools such as Fret Calculator and stuff.
Trust me......if you want to build your own instrument, you will not regret purchasing this book.

Book Description
Carlotta Carlyle and Dee Willis once sang in harmony. Now Dee has a skyrocketing music career, while Carlotta drives a cab, dates a mafia scion, and looks for missing persons in Boston. But the miles they've traveled can't change what they once had, or keep it from coming back to haunt them.
Dee wants Carlotta to find the man who once worked magic with a guitar, but now dabbles in blackmail -- claiming to be the author of three of Dee's hit songs. When Carlottas stats searching Boston's backwaters she finds a pattern of corruption that leads back to Dee's entourage . . .and then to a dead body in Dee's swank hotel room. Carlotta knows that this gig isn't just about song titles, money, or even murder. Instead, this is the kind of stuff the saddest songs are made of: the past, and what happens when the innocence dies forever.

Tall Carlotta Solves the Mystery (with a little help from her friends).......2006-07-29
I enjoyed this little book a lot, and looked forward to coming back to it after putting it down for a while.
This is the first book I have read by this author. Everything takes place in Boston. That was fun for me, because I lived there for a few years, but I had forgotten the geography.
The "Steel Guitar" is a song, and guitars are like little Gods among this crowd that Carlotta used to belong to, and still does in some ways. Dee Willis is the goddess of the steel guitar, having learned from an old blues man, the Reverend Gary something.
Anyway, all of that was just background for the real mystery: Who is trying to blackmail Dee? Or is she herself in on the scam?
The only part that raised my eyebrows was the night, at midnight, when Carlotta noted that the Red Sox game was held up because of rain, and would be called by 1 if it did not stop. Does this mean if the rain had stopped, the Red Sox would have started the game at midnight?
Well, only a baseball aficionado would care about something like that.

Satisfying.......2006-02-22
Admittedly, I am a late comer to the Carlotta series, but this was one of my favorites. This particular plot forced Carlotta to face her past and exposed some uncomfortable feelings - jealousy of Dee. The interaction with her ex was necessary and helped her come to terms with her current feelings. I thought it was a very moving story with a very poignant ending.
Weak effort.......2005-03-25
Of the Carlotta mysteries I've read so far, this is easily the weakest effort. I've often read aloud from some of the other novels in this series to my partner. The language in this particular novel is somewhat awkward and doesn't roll of the tongue easily like some of the other novels. The plot plods along and the supporting characters are dull and uninteresting. I've never felt that the Carlotta's blues hobby was very realistic and it certainly can't hold a novel together. Even the appearance of Carlotta's ex-husband doesn't spice things up much. Perhaps I have a bias against musicians (the ones I've known have generally been narcissistic and boring). Syncronistically, just before this novel, I had just read the Sue Grafton novel in which Kinsey's musician ex-husband makes an appearance. However, Sue Grafton makes it work and really uses his appearance to reveal something about Kinsey's character. In Steel Guitar, the ex is just someone else for Carlotta to boink. I've only managed to plod through about three quarters of the novel. I just don't really care very much how it turns out.
Carlotta confronts her past.......2004-08-24
Carlotta Carlyle gets a surprise customer in her taxi one night. It's Dee Willis, a famous singer, who used to be Carlotta's best friend until she stole Carlotta's husband from her. Dee now needs Carlotta's help in finding Davey, a mutual friend of theirs. Davey is accusing Dee of stealing songs which he wrote and passing them off as her own. Carlotta's investigation brings her in contact with several old friends, including her ex-husband. As usual, she is conflicted about her love life, which in this book includes three different men. As in her other books, Linda Barnes writes an interesting tale with a good plot and well-defined characters.
Not the best.......2003-02-16
I'm not wild about Carlotta's blues hobby -- it seems too forced -- so an entire book centered around it wasn't exactly a page-turner. Karen Kijewski did the "old friend is a big-time musician with a problem" better in the Kat Colorado series.
I also found the mystery, and the culprit, to be vague. It's a good series, but this definitely wasn't one of the better installments.

fine book; out of print.......2005-03-06
Irving Sloane's book on guitar construction was first published in 1975. A reprint was published in 1990. It is out of print, but still for sale new from luthier supply catalogs. Used copies can also be found through Amazon.
The book is nicely illustrated with clear black-and-white photographs on nearly every page, many of which are large, full-page pictures. Sloane's method of construction involves the assembly of the rim using a rudimentary mold, then attachment of the back and sides, and then the neck. His method of joining the neck to the body is unusual and I doubt that I would ever attempt it. There are also sections on inlay and finishing techniques.
Like Cumpiano's book this one is quite old and does not reflect recent innovations in guitar construction. I am not certain that builders on a budget would want to put Sloane's book high on their list of required reading. Nevertheless it is a good book and it is always worthwhile to see how different builders go about different ways of solving a problem. As an aside, there is a brief section on archtop guitar construction which is interesting in that it shows famous arch-top makers John D'Angelico and his successor James D'Aquisto at work in their shop. This may be the most worthwhile thing in Sloane's book, given the abundance of guitar construction information available on the internet and in newer publications.
Wonderful Book for Beginning Luthiers.......1998-05-05
This book is a great reference and roadmap for beginning guitar builders. Everything from shaping the side to spraying the finish

a very good, older book on guitar construction.......2005-03-06
Unfortunately this book is out of print. Used copies are for sale at very high prices (over $100!) that are really not worth paying. That said, if you could find this book at reasonable prices it would be worth owning. In many ways, David Russell Young's book is the predecessor of Jonathan Kinkead's recently published book on guitar construction, especially in that it is extensively illustrated with photos showing the step-by-step process of making the guitar. Like Irving Sloane, Young's method involves constructing the rim with the aid of a mold, followed by attachement of the back and sides. Young, too, has his own unusual method of attaching the neck to the body: the flat heel of the neck is apparently glued directly to the body without a dovetail or tenon joint. This point is not extensively documented, which is a shortcoming, but on the other hand I wouldn't really consider the technique in the first place so who cares.
In conclusion, I don't recommend that anyone pay high prices for this out-of print-book, but it may be worthwhile to look for it in your public library if you want to get another point of view on guitar construction. If David Russell Young were to publish another updated version of his book, perhaps with color photographs and more in-depth coverage of neck-to-body joining, I would probably buy it. On the other hand, Jonathan Kinkead seems to have picked up Young's torch with his recent book BUILD YOUR OWN ACOUSTIC GUITAR: COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS AND FULL-SIZE PLANS.
Detailed and Comprehensive.......2000-06-19
This book is a detailed and thorough text that offers the reader not only guitar construction techniques, but the reasonings behind each decision. Young's writing style is simple and easy to follow, and I found his methods quite comfortable. And you don't have to have the world's greatest workshop to get the job done! The only drawbacks would be the illustrations and photographs, which are black and white and, at times, not as detailed as I would have preferred. But otherwise, this is a solid book with all the info you need to make that first acoustic six- or twelve-string guitar.
Customer Reviews:
Great for beginners.......2001-03-06
Here is another book from the great chess author, Bruce Pandolfini. This one focuses on short-term combinations and uses matches from recent tournament play, along with a "Little Chessercizes" for children and those who have just learned the game. These "Little Chessercizes" also help with the big ones, providing clues by linking a certain problem or position to its smaller components, allowing the less experienced players to put them together and solve the problem.
Certainly, this is a great, unique, and challenging book. However, if you would like to excel at chess - the one book you need is "My System," by Nimzovich. In summary, this book (Pandolfini's) is great for the recreational player, fun for beginners and children, but the more advanced player who is playing for more than recreational should probably skip this book and either read Nimzovich or focus on areas of his/her game (i.e. opening, middlegame, endgame).
Book Description
Have you ever wondered why some people seem to rise effortlessly to the top, while others are stuck in the same job year after year? Have you ever felt you are falling short of your career potential? Have you wondered if some of the things you do–or don’t do–at work might be hamstringing your ambitions? In The 12 Bad Habits That Hold Good People Back, James Waldroop and Timothy Butler identify the twelve habits that–whether you are a retail clerk or a law firm partner, work in technology or in a factory–are almost guaranteed to hold you back.
The fact is, most people learn their greatest lessons not from their successes but from their mistakes. The 12 Bad Habits That Hold Good People Back offers the flip side to Stephen Covey’s approach in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, zeroing in on the most common behavior that can impede a career. Based on over twenty years of research as business psychologists, the authors claim that the reasons people fail in their jobs are the same everywhere. Only after these detrimental behaviors have been identified can the patterns that limit career advancement be broken.
Using real-life accounts of clients they have worked with at Harvard and as executive coaches at such companies as GTE, Sony, GE, and McKinsey & Co., Waldroop and Butler offer invaluable–and in some cases, job-saving–step-by-step advice on how readers can change their behavior to get back on track.
For anyone seeking to achieve his or her career ambitions, The 12 Bad Habits That Hold Good People Back is a powerful tool for unleashing true potential.
Customer Reviews:
The 12 Bad habits that hold Good People back.......2007-10-01
Excellent book. Gives good insight. I knew there were things I was doing wrong but just didn't know what they were. Now that I know what bad habits I have had, I can work on them and end the frustration. Helped me to realize that others have their problems too and instead of feeling slighted by their behaviour, I now see them as people with bad habits (just like me)!
Outstanding for Everyone.......2007-07-21
After reading several "career change"/"I Hate My Job" books, this one has been by far one of the best for anyone looking for work, working happily or working on getting somewhere else. The personality types described are a bit cookie-cutter but eerily accurate. Most readers will be able to identify "that guy" in one or more of the traits outlined. The case study examples can be a bit drawn out, but the descriptive traits and practical solutions help the reader discover the latent but very influential personality types that occur and impact offices everywhere. This book doesn't advocate radical solutions, stormy emotional confrontations or weepy introspective group hugs. Rather, as a personal tool, it should help the reader see how individuals undermine themselves and others from being truly successful.
Realistic help from a book for the first time.......2007-05-27
The book is easy to read, (though I wish it was printed in a larger font)as I feel you don't come out at the end feeling that you should be close to becoming a saint, and only then can you achieve success. And this isn't the attitude we see in people who are at the top of companies.
The real-life situations are real-life, and it reads like a story.
Somewhere or the other we are not always a single type of person as in a single habit, but each of the 12 habits influences us in our daily life in our work place.
This book has helped me a lot and I read it everyday.
Wondeful.......2007-05-20
One of the best books I have ever read in my life. The books belongs to a completely different league...It is so insightful..It has the accuracy of a science book and the flow of a poem.....I still cant beleive that this book isnt as popular as sevn habits of highly people etc....
High Class work...
It is a very good book.......2007-01-09
