4 out of 5 stars Morbid subject but fun read.......2003-02-07

When Bad Blood made its way to my desk I thought that I'd leave it there for a while and then quietly put it on my bookshelf. Luckily, my morbid curiosity took over and I began flipping through it. Before I knew it, I had read the entire book backwards to front. Divided into two major sections-"Case Histories" and "Screen Psychos"-the former gives biographical information of serial killers and infamous murderers before providing abbreviated reviews of films that relate, directly or tenuously, to each of them. These "Case Histories" stand as the stronger section of Fuchs's book. To have this information collected in such a convenient method is invaluable.

Bad Blood sports some odd typos resultant of translation from German to English but they're easy to overlook. The accomplished writing and research elevate the book from what could have been a slapdash recap of movie murderers to an articulate study of an undeniably important facet of cinema. This book is the english (updated) version of 1996's "Kino Killer" by Christian Fuchs. The main part of this excellent book covers real existing serial killers and the according movies (from Abbott to Zodiac). The second part are analysis from all kind of sub-genres like: fictional Serial Killer Films ("American Psycho" / "Seven"), Psycho Killers ("Dressed to Kill" / "Maniac"), Amok-killers ("Falling Down" / "Taxi Driver"), Sadean Killers ("Cape Fear" / "Hannibal"), murderous Women ("Basic Instinct" / "Ilsa - she Wolf of the SS"), Killer Couples ("Natural Born Killers" / "Bonnie & Clyde") and last but not least Horror Slasher-Killer ("Friday the 13th" / "Halloween"). At the end you'll find an excellent Bibliography.

5 out of 5 stars A good study guide.......2000-12-17

If you are taking a music history course that uses A History of Western Music (Grout) then this would be a helpful study guide. It has a brief overview of the main points of each chapter. There are then many questions to answer about that chapter. It also uses the Norton recordings and Anthology of Western Music. If you did all the work in this book you would definitely do well in your course. The chapter overviews do NOT contain enough information to avoid reading the Grout text in case you wanted to be lazy.

I would highly recommend this for undergraduate or graduate music students taking a general music history course.

This book and the study and listening guide are a great combination. The material is structured for the best learning, and it does so in as concise a manner as one can have with thousands of years of music to cover. Anyone who loves music would find the book and guide (including necessary CDs) a great help.

Thoroughly revised and updated with outstanding new pedagogy, Concise History of Western Music, Second Edition, provides an authoritative yet succinct survey of Western music history. Based on Grout and Palisca's classic A History of Western Music, Sixth Edition, Professor Hanning's text retains the uncompromising reliability and scope of its parent volume while presenting material in readable prose, with more pedagogy and fewer details. Lavishly illustrated with maps, timelines, color plates, and musical examples, Concise History of Western Music, Second Edition, delivers authoritative scholarship in an accessible and engaging format.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I know the author.......2007-03-13

I know the author of this book and took a class with her. She is quite knowledgable. This book goes well as a compliment to the Western Anthology of Music to expand upon the scores and history. There are many pictures within this book that help to visualize the feel of the time periods and movements in art. It can be useful to see the parallels in music and visual art.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointingly dry.......2005-10-31

I chose this title because I wanted to get a sense of the history of classical music, its development and the lives of composers. I like classical music but my knowledge of it is sporadic at best, so this book seemed like a good starting point to build up some more structured knowledge, and to be introduced to music previously unknown to me.

While quite informative, I was disappointed by the book. The writing is really rather dry, and failed to convey any enthusiasm about music. This, I think, is a crucial lack. Music is intended to animate, not to bore. I expected to be inspired, and get lots of ideas about what music to explore, but sadly I wasn't. Has it not been shown over and over that one can write academically sound works without presenting the material in a clear but emotionless manner?

There are also some strange omissions in the book. For instance, Bach's Goldberg Variations are mentioned, but why they are called this is not in the text. Finally, I have the distinct feeling the book also sometimes presents information of questionable accuracy as true. Composer's lives tend to spark many legends which, though amusing, are usually completely false. The story that Rameau was such a nag that he reproached the priest who came to his deathbed for poor chanting is presented as true, but I would guess that it has the status of an emblematic anecdote, not historical fact.

If anyone knows of a book which gives a slightly more inspiring history of western music, please let me know!

5 out of 5 stars Makes teaching Western Music Culture an excellent experience.......2005-07-12

I have been using Hanning's Concise History Vol. 2 in my Music History classes. I have found it an excellent tool. She uses standard excerpts often throughout the text with original manuscript citings and easily understood analyses. Each of the chapters begins with an excellent overview and ends with a review. Both are a strong broad cross section of historic context. Excellent period artwork in full color is included.

The teachers manual gives a good overview and can be used in class to teach from. The quizzes are appropriate and emphasize material that is most significant to each chapter. If I were to write a manual I would want to include what she has.

The anthology, CD and print, are well done and affordable. I have found the recordings she uses to be excellent in quality and fitting to each of the periods. I have struggles with this in other publisher's works especially with regard to the price. My students have told me they listen to these CDs long after the class has ended.

I do wish there was more from the current period, especially with regard for Rock, Pop and Contemporary Christian Music Culture. That said I think Hanning has done an exceptional job in capturing a concise history of western music culture.

4 out of 5 stars A better study tool than Palisca's Grout..........2004-01-16

Barbara Hanning's "Concise History of Western Music" is indeed a thinned-out version of Grout's comprehensive survey history of western music. While it's certainly not as concise as a volume of Cliff's Notes, Hanning's edition very successfully accomplishes what it sets out to do: it condenses the Grout, creating an easier reading and teaching text for use with college (undergraduate) musicians and students.

If brevity is your thing, and most especially if you are new to music studies, you might instead look at Nicholas Cook's "Music: A Very Short Introduction" (Oxford, 1998, reissued 2000). There, you'll find a truly _concise_ text (about 120 pages) that discusses the status of western music in modern society, as well as some of "classical" music's persistent historical themes, composers, and performance trends.

If you're not involved with post-secondary music or humanities coursework, you may not consider the Hanning (or the Palisca "History of Western Music," for that matter) the most rewarding text for independent reading. Hanning's text functions quite well (perhaps best) as a book for classroom teaching and discussion, and I prefer it to Palisca's Grout edition.

This time is my 3rd time to purchase new edition of A History of Western Music. I studied from 5th edition. This new edition is more easy to study. Fully recommended~

4 out of 5 stars Lots of facts, no analysis.......2006-07-22

When I found what I believe to be the first edition (from 1960) in a thrift store for $1, I had no idea that this was considered the pre-eminent music history textbook. Consequently, I approached it as "pleasure" rather than assigned classroom reading. And I am in full agreement with the assessment that the writing is dry in the extreme - and I admit that I skimmed certain sections rather than reading them all the way through. Compared to the writing of critics such as Donald Tovey, Norman Lebrecht, Alex Ross, Jonathan Saville, or August Kleinzahler, Grout is not "entertaining;" as I explain below, he does not even meet the definition of "critic."

My own systematic introduction to Western art music began with the Baroque period, with a brief mention that there was something called "Gregorian Chant" which preceded it. Grout's treatment is the polar opposite of this approach; he begins with Greek antiquity and proceeds forward through the medieval and renaissance periods in such detail that Bach is not encountered until the book's halfway point. Yet despite this inclusiveness, there is no mention of Hildegard von Bingen, who I had assumed to be a major early Renaissance composer. As an introduction to the field, this may not be the most useful approach; the neophyte may wish for greater concentration on the composers he is more likely to hear. Sensibly, Grout limits his presentation of the 20th century to the giants (Stravinsky, Schoenberg) whose significance was apparent at the halfway point, with brief mentions of others; he may be forgiven his extensive section on Hindemith, who may have appeared more important in the 1950s than he has since become. Nevertheless, I give the book five stars for inclusiveness.

I must temper this position by awarding three stars for the nearly complete absence of any context within which the music took form. Grout not only neglects any discussion of the historical events surrounding the composers; there is no mention of events within the composers' own lives that may have affected their creativity. It is as if the music took form within a vacuum, with no relation to anything except the music that came before it, whether in continued development or opposition. The timeline in the appendix is woefully inadequate in this regard, a mere chronology with no relation other than temporal to the events noted.

It is a modern convention that art is more properly understood through historiographical analysis; that some relationship exists between artistic creativity and the society within which it is created. It goes without saying that an artist's work also springs from his own life experiences. Shostakovich cannot be understood without the awareness that his music was an expression of his opposition to Soviet Communism; it is of interest to note Mozart's complete subservience to his own political environment. If it is unfair to criticize this edition of Grout for not exploring pathways which to us seem obvious, then by the same token, the book is itself subject to historiographic deconstruction. It is valuable not so much as a resource for information on Western art music composers, but as a snapshot of the academic attitude toward those composers current in the 1950s. As I have not read any later editions, I can't comment on whether this deficit has been corrected - but this would have required a complete reorientation of the author's philosophy.

Most inexcusably, Grout concludes with a brief observation of the rift between the public and classical music composers (especially the modern ones), with no thoughts as to the implications this may have on the future of this art form. Again, the music is viewed as existing in a vacuum, unrelated to the world at large and the lives of the composers who created it. This bespeaks the astonishing opinion that Western art music has no importance for anyone outside the small circle of specialists directly concerned with it. It was, and is this very attitude that to a large extent is responsible for the peripheral place this great tradition has in society today, and the risk of its continued marginalization in the future.

5 out of 5 stars New Magical Locations.......2003-10-26

Target: Awakened Lands finally gives us some brand new locations in the Shadowrun universe. It gives us details on world regions that are extremely magically active (and often dangerous as a result). This should prove to be a fun and useful book for those that prefer a more magically oriented Shadowrun.

The book deals primarily with Australia and gives good details on the nation/continent of Australia and the magically wild Outback. There are rules for mana storms and the magic of the native peoples of Australia just to name a few. Madagascar and a couple of other magically active places are also gone over briefly.

I found this to be a fun book to read just for pleasure but it also seems useful for creating new adventures, especially if you've always wanted to have runs in Australia. I also felt some re-birth of the wonder I had when I first read about the Native Americans in the Shadowrun backstory of the old 2nd edition rulebook.

You won't need this book for regular adventures unless you'd like to go to Australia or some other magically active places. For the record, Tir Na Nog (Ireland) is not included in this book. I think that's coming out later in Shadows of Europe.

It's one of the earlier FanPro/WizKids releases so it should be middling-easy to find. Try and pick up a cheaper used copy in good condition if you can find one.

Chuck Kremer, Ron Rizzuto, and John F. Case believe "50 percent of small-company owners and managers don't get complete, timely information about their business's financial performance" and "90 percent don't really understand or use the information they do get." Kremer, a business-literacy consultant, Rizzuto, a university finance professor, and Case, a business journalist, further contend that such data and their proper application are critical to the successful operation of any small business. That's why they've assembled Managing by the Numbers as a self-help guide to the ins and outs of corporate finance. In the first section, they show how to decipher three major reports that everyone should review monthly (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow). In the second, they discuss how resultant figures tie in to "three bottom lines of business" (net profit, operating cash flow, return on assets) that can be examined collectively. And in the third, they explain ways that stimuli for each can be optimized to achieve overall business goals. The combination allows you to "translate your financial understanding into better financial performance," the authors conclude. While much of the material may seem intimidating, it is presented clearly and could indeed provide an edge in today's hypercompetitive business environment. --Howard Rothman

10x the cover if I knew the value it'd bring.

I got this book as part of "Birthing of Giants". It's a three year retreat for entrepreneurs held for a week in the summer. You get a reading list and they are kind enough to send you books.

It sat in the box until Charles Kremer came to speak to our class. What he presented made the material so clear.

Before, I'd set barriers as to what was comfortable from a cash management point of view. My goals would actually cause pain when they'd be reached.

The relationships between balance sheet, income statement and cash statement are clear. "Beginning position" +/-non cash part of transaction +/- cash part of transaction = "Ending position"

Want to know the effect of retained earnings on the balance sheet or MSGA expense on the income statement or where the Interest expense paid should fall? Consult the "Magic Square".

Don't look at this book as a substitute for CPA knowledge but rather as a cheat-sheet for financial goal setting and cash management of a business.

4 out of 5 stars A straightforward explanation of how the accounting jigsaw fits together.......2006-07-14

The book is well written with a non accounting audience in mind. A greater understanding of how accounting savvy people utilize the information within balance sheets, P&L's and cash flow statements can be achieved. An enjoyable and worthwhile read for those who want to try and get to grips with the irksome task of understanding their accountant, or even better to use the accounting information available to IMPROVE their business.

EXCERPTED From Chapter 3 (The Numbers That Count: Acknowledge the Rules), Page 72*

At the end of this chapter, I refer to several terrific books that delve into much greater detail of these aspects, and I highly recommend that you read them. At the bare minimum, you need to understand the basics.

Folks who speak the language of finance use three financial statements; the income statement, the balance sheet, and cash flow.

Each set of numbers tracks a different function. Each one is important for your business. (Note: I highly recommend the terrific book Managing by the Numbers by Chuck Kremer et. al.-see "Resources" at the end of the chapter.)

The balance sheet provides what experts call a "snapshot" of your business's financial condition at one particular point in time. Think of this statement as what your business owns and what it owes. This statement lists your assets (what the business owns or is due), your liabilities (what the business owes), and difference between assets and liabilities, which is called owner's equity. This sheet is constructed so that your assets minus your liabilities necessarily equal the owner's equity; thus, when it is produced correctly, the sums are balanced.

The income statement tracks your company's profitability over a given period of time. It says whether, in a specific period, you made money or didn't. But, and this is a huge but, it's an abstraction. It shows the promises that people have made to pay you money, and the agreements you have made to pay others. "It shows whether you're making money on the goods and services you provide, once you have taken all your costs and expenses into account. But it isn't real," write Kremer et al. It doesn't show how much cash you've put in you bank account or how much cash you spent." Income statements are subject to manipulation. Because income statements are subject to intangible factors such as depreciation (which tracks how an asset loses value over time), you can show a profit-or loss-that is not directly tied to your activities in that span of time. Moreover, income statements count promises that others have made to you as actual income, while the daily reality may be quite different. So these statements indicate profitability-which is good-but they don't necessarily reflect your daily, actual situation.

For that you have cash flow. Cash flow is, very simply, the difference between your cash receipts and your cash expenditures. It's what you have left after you spend the money that you take in. Consider this measure to be your business checkbook; what cash is actually coming into your business and what is actually being spent? There is no fudging cash. It's what you have on hand-the balance in your account.

This gem limns the theory and practice of financial management for small companies. Set aside the fact that some of the basics may apply to larger or slightly more mature companies than yours. Read this to understand how to use the financial life of your company as the basis for critical operational decisions. Kremer et al. show how you need to understand three financial statements (the balance sheet, the income statement, and cash flow) to truly evaluate your company's performance. Moreover, you really start to control this function when you learn how the three statements fit together.
